To collect custom application statistics in Graphite, run StatsD as the receiving and aggregation daemon, send each measurement in the line format <metricname>:<value>|<type>, configure StatsD’s Graphite backend and namespace, then create Graphite retention and aggregation rules that match StatsD’s flush interval and metric semantics. The quickest smoke test is echo "foo:1|c" | nc -u -w0 127.0.0.1 8125; after the next flush, look for the resulting metric beneath the configured namespace.
How StatsD and Graphite fit together
StatsD is a daemon that receives application metrics, groups them into named buckets, aggregates values during a flush window, and forwards the resulting series to Graphite. Graphite stores those series and applies retention and downsampling rules over time. The original StatsD release is attributed to Etsy in 2011 by Graphite’s quick-start documentation.

Applications normally send StatsD over UDP. The default StatsD flush interval documented by the project is 10 seconds. At each flush, StatsD emits counters, gauges, timers, and sets according to their type; Graphite then stores the emitted series at paths derived from the metric name and backend namespace.
A metric name is therefore more than a label. Periods in the name become Graphite path separators. A name such as app.checkout.render creates a hierarchy that can be selected in Graphite dashboards and alert expressions.

Choose where StatsD runs
You can operate the daemon beside your application, run the official StatsD-compatible Docker image, or send data to a managed Hosted Graphite endpoint. The protocol and metric design remain the same, but operational responsibilities differ.
| Consideration | Self-hosted StatsD and Graphite | Managed Hosted Graphite |
|---|---|---|
| Operational ownership | You maintain the StatsD process, Graphite service, network access, upgrades, backups, and disk capacity. | The provider operates the receiving and storage services; you manage clients, credentials, naming, and dashboards. |
| Configuration control | Full control over the daemon, namespace, schemas, aggregation rules, and network placement. | Configuration is constrained by the service’s endpoint, account, and documented limits. |
| Retention customization | You can define per-pattern retention and aggregation in Graphite configuration files. | Available retention and roll-up choices depend on the service plan and API. |
| Network placement | Keep UDP traffic inside your own network or place StatsD near the applications that emit metrics. | Applications must reach the provider’s endpoint, often across a network boundary. |
| Cost and lock-in | Infrastructure and engineering time are your costs; data formats remain under your control. | Current prices, limits, and portability depend on the provider’s terms and should be checked before adoption. |
For a first installation, use self-hosting when you need local network placement or exact schema control. A managed endpoint is useful when you do not want to operate Graphite, but confirm current service terms before committing production data.
Configure the StatsD Graphite backend
1. Start StatsD with a configuration file
The official StatsD project runs as a Node.js daemon. Start it with the configuration file used by your deployment and enable the Graphite backend. Set the Graphite host and port to the listener used by your Graphite installation, and set the flush interval explicitly if you do not want the documented 10-second default.
A configuration commonly contains these kinds of settings; retain the exact syntax required by the StatsD version and packaging you installed:
{
"graphiteHost": "127.0.0.1",
"graphitePort": 2003,
"flushInterval": 10000,
"backends": [
"./backends/graphite"
]
}
The host, port, and backend must agree with the Graphite receiver. A daemon that is running but pointed at the wrong host or port will accept UDP packets while silently failing to deliver usable series.

2. Confirm that the UDP listener accepts a packet
From the machine that can reach StatsD, send the project’s minimal counter test:
echo "foo:1|c" | nc -u -w0 127.0.0.1 8125
Port 8125 is the endpoint used by this smoke command. Replace the address when StatsD is on another host, container, or network interface. Wait through one flush interval, then query or browse Graphite for the resulting foo series under the configured namespace.
3. Check the whole path, not only the process status
- Verify that StatsD is listening on the expected UDP address and port.
- Verify that the Graphite backend is enabled in the configuration actually used at startup.
- Verify the Graphite host and receiving port from the StatsD machine.
- Check firewall, container-network, and security-group rules for UDP input to StatsD and the StatsD-to-Graphite connection.
- Wait at least one complete flush interval before deciding that a test metric is absent.
Send custom metrics with the correct type
Every StatsD sample follows <metricname>:<value>|<type>. The metric name identifies the bucket; the type tells StatsD how to aggregate it. Choosing the wrong type is the most common cause of values that look averaged, reset unexpectedly, or cannot answer the intended question.
| Type | Example | Meaning and Graphite output |
|---|---|---|
Counter (c) |
orders.completed:1|c |
Counts occurrences during the flush window. StatsD resets the bucket after flushing and emits count and rate forms. A value of 1 means one event, not an absolute total. |
Gauge (g) |
queue.depth:42|g |
Represents the current value. A gauge can be changed with signed updates, such as queue.depth:+5|g or queue.depth:-2|g, when your client and deployment support that form. |
Timer (ms) |
checkout.render:320|ms |
Records a duration, normally in milliseconds. StatsD calculates statistics including mean, standard deviation, sum, lower and upper bounds, and configured percentiles. |
Set (s) |
unique.visitor:765|s |
Counts distinct values observed in the flush window. Use it for uniqueness, not for every-event throughput. |
Counters and sampling
Use a counter for events such as completed orders, cache misses, or jobs accepted. StatsD can accept sampled counters with a sampling rate, for example orders.completed:1|c|@0.1. Sampling reduces network traffic; the client or StatsD uses the rate to estimate the unsampled count. Do not interpret a sampled event stream as a literal one-for-one count without accounting for that rate.
Gauges and current state
Use a gauge for a value that has meaning at a point in time: queue depth, active workers, temperature, or available capacity. A gauge is not reset like a counter. Sending an absolute value replaces the current value, while a signed update changes it relative to the current value. Ensure that at least one absolute update is sent after a restart if a relative-only producer could otherwise leave the series undefined.

Timers and latency distributions
Use a timer for elapsed work, such as request, database, or render duration. A timer produces multiple derived paths, so decide which statistic your dashboard needs. The mean answers an average question; upper bounds and percentiles reveal slow requests that an average can hide. Preserve the timer’s derived suffixes when writing Graphite aggregation rules.
Sets and uniqueness
Use a set when repeated submissions of the same value should count once during a flush, such as unique visitor IDs. A set’s result is a distinct-count estimate for that window, not a durable identity database.
Design names and the Graphite namespace
Choose names as a stable hierarchy before creating dashboards or alerts. For example, shop.checkout.render, shop.checkout.errors, and shop.queue.depth keep related series together. Avoid embedding short-lived hostnames or deployment IDs unless you deliberately want a separate series for every instance.
The Graphite backend’s default global prefix is stats. Backend configuration also exposes prefixes for counters, timers, gauges, and sets. With the default arrangement, a submitted name is written below the stats tree, with type-specific branches and derived suffixes added by StatsD.
Legacy namespacing matters for counters. With legacy namespacing enabled, counters retain their historical paths. With legacyNamespace=false, counters use paths such as stats.counters.<name>.rate and stats.counters.<name>.count. This changes every dashboard, alert, and retention pattern that references the old location, so select the policy before creating production metric files. If you must change it later, migrate queries and allow both paths during a planned transition rather than changing the switch unnoticed.

Configure Graphite retention schemas
Graphite decides how long to keep each resolution in conf/storage-schemas.conf. A documented StatsD example is:
[stats]
pattern = ^stats.*
retentions = 10s:6h,1m:6d,10m:1800d
This example stores six hours of 10-second points, six days of one-minute points, and 1,800 days (five years) of 10-minute points. These are example values from the StatsD project’s Graphite guide, not universal defaults. Adjust them for the questions your team needs to answer and the disk capacity available.
Graphite reads retention rules in order. The first matching schema is applied when a metric file is first created. Editing the schema later does not rewrite existing files, so a corrected rule affects new series unless you explicitly migrate or recreate old data. Place specific patterns before broad patterns when several namespaces are in use.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Align the flush interval with the finest retention step
The StatsD flush interval and Graphite’s finest retention step describe the same time boundary from different sides. If StatsD flushes faster than Graphite’s highest-resolution retention, more than one StatsD value can arrive during a single Graphite interval; the guide warns that only the last value may persist. That can make a counter appear to lose events or make a rapidly changing gauge look arbitrary.
Set flushInterval at least as long as the finest retention step, then review the trade-off:

- A shorter flush creates fresher dashboards but increases packets, writes, and the risk of multiple values landing in one storage interval.
- A longer flush reduces write pressure but delays visibility and makes each aggregate represent a wider period.
- If the finest schema step is 10 seconds, a 10-second flush is the straightforward alignment; do not use a faster flush unless you have verified how your Graphite receiver handles multiple points.
When you change either value, test a new metric and inspect timestamps and point counts rather than assuming the old series changed behavior. Existing Graphite files retain their original archive configuration.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Preserve metric meaning during downsampling
Retention archives eventually consolidate several points into one. The consolidation function must match the suffix and semantics of the series. The documented example uses minimum values for names ending in .lower, maximum values for .upper, sums for .sum and .count, and averages for other metrics.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →| Series pattern | Suitable consolidation | Reason |
|---|---|---|
*.lower |
Minimum | Preserves the lowest observed bound. |
*.upper |
Maximum | Preserves the highest observed bound and avoids hiding spikes. |
*.sum and *.count |
Sum | Combines event totals across the points being consolidated. |
| Other series, when an average is meaningful | Average | Provides a representative value for gauges or statistics where arithmetic averaging is valid. |
Do not average a value merely because it is the default. Averaging a counter’s already aggregated rate can answer a different question from total events; summing a gauge such as queue depth is usually meaningless. Keep the function attached to the metric pattern and suffix, and document the interpretation in the dashboard.
Use xFilesFactor deliberately
xFilesFactor sets the minimum fraction of points that must be present before Graphite consolidates a bucket. A value that is too high creates gaps whenever a few samples are late or missing. A value that is too low can make sparse data appear complete. Choose it according to the expected packet loss and the operational cost of showing an estimate, then test with intentionally missing points.
Aggregation choices, like retention choices, are fixed when Graphite first receives a metric file. Changing a rule does not alter the archives already written. Apply corrected rules to new series or migrate old files as a separate data-management task.
Verify that custom metrics arrive correctly
- Send one counter, one gauge, and one timer with distinctive names, for example
verify.orders:1|c,verify.queue:42|g, andverify.render:320|ms. - Wait for a complete StatsD flush and locate the namespace tree beginning with
stats, unless you deliberately changed the global prefix. - Confirm that the counter has the expected count and rate branches, the gauge has its current value, and the timer has mean, bounds, and any configured percentile series.
- Compare each point’s timestamp with the configured flush and retention steps.
- Repeat after a second flush so that you can distinguish a delayed write from a permanently missing series.
Troubleshoot missing or misleading values
| Symptom | Likely cause | Correction |
|---|---|---|
| No series appears | UDP port unreachable, wrong bind address, firewall rule, or StatsD process using another configuration file. | Check the listener, send the UDP smoke command locally and remotely, inspect startup logs, and verify the active configuration path. |
| StatsD receives packets but Graphite stays empty | Graphite backend disabled, incorrect host or port, or blocked StatsD-to-Graphite connection. | Enable the backend, correct destination settings, and test connectivity from the StatsD host. |
| Series exists under an unexpected path | Global or type-specific prefix differs from the dashboard query, or legacy namespacing changed. | Inspect the actual path, document the selected prefixes, and update queries or migrate names deliberately. |
| Counter appears to lose events | Counter was confused with a gauge, samples arrived faster than the finest Graphite step, or a downsampling function averaged a rate. | Send the metric as c, align flush and retention intervals, and use sum or another function appropriate to the emitted series. |
| Timer average hides slow requests | The dashboard displays only the mean. | Graph the upper bound and configured percentile series as well as the mean. |
| Long-range graph has gaps | xFilesFactor requires more points than the sparse interval provides. |
Lower the factor only as far as your completeness policy allows, and investigate the missing samples. |
| Schema change has no effect | The metric file already existed when the old schema or aggregation rule was selected. | Apply the new rule to new files or perform an explicit migration; Graphite does not rewrite existing archives automatically. |
Production checklist
- Use a naming hierarchy that will remain stable across deployments.
- Choose
c,g,ms, orsaccording to what the number means, not how convenient it is to emit. - Record the global prefix, type prefixes, and legacy namespace setting with your dashboard definitions.
- Set and document the flush interval; keep it no shorter than the finest Graphite retention step unless you have tested the receiver’s behavior.
- Create storage schemas before high-volume production series so new files receive the intended archives.
- Define aggregation rules for timer bounds, sums, counts, rates, and gauges rather than applying one function to everything.
- Test packet reachability, backend delivery, path names, timestamps, and at least two flushes before relying on an alert.
- Plan disk capacity and archive duration for the retention schedule you actually select.
The Bottom Line
Reliable StatsD-to-Graphite collection depends on three deliberate choices: send the right metric type, keep namespace paths stable, and align StatsD flushing with Graphite retention and aggregation. Validate all three with a counter, gauge, and timer before putting dashboards or alerts into production.
