Configure Sensu monitoring in four layers: run a Sensu backend and agent, install the RabbitMQ and Redis runtime assets, create CheckConfig resources whose subscriptions match the target agents, and route status or metric events to your alerting and storage pipelines. Agents execute the checks locally; the backend stores and schedules them. A check runs only on an agent with the required subscription.

This guide gives a production-oriented configuration, explains which checks cover broker and Redis failure modes, and shows how to validate exit states and metric output without causing an outage.

How Sensu monitoring works

A Sensu backend stores and schedules CheckConfig resources. Sensu agents register as entities, advertise subscriptions, run matching checks on the monitored host, and publish events back to the backend. The agent—not the backend—opens the RabbitMQ or Redis connection and executes the plugin.

The official getting-started prerequisites are a running Sensu backend, at least one running agent, and sensuctl configured for an administrative user. Put the agent where it can reach the service endpoint. For a host-local RabbitMQ or Redis process, install the agent on that host. For a remote service, use a proxy entity or a dedicated monitoring agent with network access, then verify credentials, ports, certificates, and TLS options supported by the selected plugin.

Execution and routing model

  • The backend schedules a check according to its interval or cron expression.
  • The check is dispatched only to agents whose subscriptions include the check’s subscription.
  • The agent executes the command and returns stdout, stderr, and an exit status.
  • The backend records the resulting event, which can be sent to handlers or pipelines.

Keep RabbitMQ and Redis on separate subscriptions when they run on different hosts or require different credentials, schedules, or alert routes.

Prepare the Sensu environment

Prerequisites checklist

  • A reachable Sensu backend and a registered, healthy target agent.
  • Administrative access through sensuctl.
  • Network access from the executing agent to the RabbitMQ AMQP or management endpoint, or to the Redis endpoint.
  • Non-production test credentials first; production credentials should be stored through Sensu’s secrets mechanism or environment-variable substitution rather than embedded in plain command text.
  • A documented polling objective: the interval must detect failures quickly enough without creating unnecessary load on the broker or Redis instance.

Before creating checks, confirm that the agent can resolve the service hostname and establish the intended TLS or non-TLS connection. A check cannot distinguish an application failure from a DNS, firewall, certificate, or credential problem unless those failure paths are tested separately.

Create agent subscriptions

An agent runs a check only when the check’s subscription matches an agent subscription. Add subscriptions to the agent configuration, then restart or reload the agent according to your deployment method.

subscriptions:
  - rabbitmq
  - redis

If RabbitMQ and Redis are on different machines, give each agent only the subscription it needs. This prevents a Redis check from being sent to a RabbitMQ host and lets you apply different credentials, intervals, and handlers. A remote-service design can use a dedicated agent with both subscriptions, but that agent must have reliable network access to both endpoints and should be monitored as an additional dependency.

Configure RabbitMQ checks

Start with a reachability or node-health check. Add queue, consumer, message, cluster, partition, and metric checks only where they correspond to an operational objective. A queue-depth alert without consumer and node context often produces ambiguous incidents.

Choose checks by failure mode

Operational question Useful check family What to configure
Can the service answer? Aliveness or AMQP aliveness Endpoint, protocol, credentials, and TLS options supported by the asset.
Is a node functioning? Node-health Node identity and thresholds appropriate to the cluster.
Is the cluster coherent? Cluster-health and network-partitions Cluster endpoint and the failure conditions that should page an operator.
Are consumers keeping up? Consumers Queue or consumer scope and a minimum acceptable consumer count.
Is work accumulating? Queue or messages Explicit queue names plus warning and critical thresholds.
How is the system trending? Overview and queue metric commands Metric format, stable labels, and a downstream pipeline.

Queue thresholds that produce useful alerts

Select explicit queue names and define warning and critical thresholds from service-level objectives. A single transient spike may be normal; sustained backlog or a predicted drain-time breach is more actionable. Pair a queue check with consumer and node-health checks so responders can separate increased workload, stalled consumers, and broker failure.

For large installations, avoid creating an unbounded check for every dynamically created queue. Select business-critical queues, use a controlled discovery process, or send queue metrics to a time-series system and alert there with aggregation rules.

Configure Redis checks

Use a ping check for basic reachability, then add checks that reflect the Redis role and workload. A replica requires different assertions from a standalone cache, and a list-processing workload may need list-length thresholds in addition to memory checks.

Minimal Redis CheckConfig

Redis checks and when to use them

Concern Check family Typical purpose
Endpoint reachability Ping Detect inability to establish a Redis connection.
Server state INFO Assert application-level information beyond a successful TCP connection.
Capacity Memory and memory percentage Warn before configured memory limits or eviction pressure affect applications.
Connection headroom Available connections Detect exhaustion before clients begin failing.
Data shape Keys and list length Watch key-count growth or work queues with explicit thresholds.
Replication Replica-status Verify that a replica is connected and in the expected synchronization state.
Trend analysis Redis metric commands Export values such as memory, connections, and role data for dashboards.

Apply different thresholds to a cache, a durable data store, and a queue-like Redis deployment. For replicas, alert on the state that indicates replication is no longer healthy rather than treating every role change as a failure.

Set schedules and interpret check states

Every check needs either an interval or a valid cron schedule. Sensu uses Nagios-compatible result semantics:

Exit code Sensu state Operational meaning
0 OK The assertion passed.
1 WARNING An early saturation or degraded condition is present.
2 CRITICAL The service or threshold condition requires urgent action.
Other Unknown or custom The plugin returned a state outside the standard mapping; define how your pipeline handles it.

Choose an interval from the failure-detection objective and the cost of polling RabbitMQ management interfaces or Redis INFO. A 30-second example is not a universal recommendation. Measure endpoint load, coordinate intervals across many agents, and use warning thresholds to provide lead time before a critical condition.

When many agents share a check, round_robin can distribute execution. Combining round-robin with TTL behavior has proxy-entity requirements, so verify those requirements before enabling both features.

Export RabbitMQ and Redis metrics

Status checks answer whether an assertion currently passes. Metric checks produce time-series points for capacity planning, dashboards, and trend-based alerting. Configure the check’s output_metric_format to match the selected metric format, then route the event through a Sensu pipeline. Sensu validates the emitted format, extracts metric points, and handlers can send them to systems such as InfluxDB, Elasticsearch, Grafana, or Graphite.

Separate status from high-cardinality metrics

  • Keep paging checks small and deterministic: reachability, node or replica state, critical queue thresholds, and partition detection.
  • Run metric checks on a schedule appropriate to dashboard freshness and endpoint cost.
  • Use stable labels such as environment, cluster, node, queue, and database role.
  • Do not put passwords, tokens, request IDs, or unbounded user identifiers into metric labels.
  • Inspect a metric event before attaching a long-term handler; the event should contain a populated metrics section and the expected names and labels.

Queue and key metrics can have high cardinality. Limit the set of queues or keys you export, or aggregate downstream, so a dashboard system does not become the new capacity problem.

Validate the deployment safely

  1. Confirm that the backend and target agent are active and that sensuctl reaches the backend.
  2. Check the target entity’s subscriptions. The required value must exactly match the subscription in each CheckConfig.
  3. Verify that the corresponding runtime asset is registered and that the agent can resolve the command.
  4. Run each plugin manually on the target host with non-production credentials. Record stdout, stderr, and the exit status.
  5. Test a known failure with a safe test endpoint or intentionally invalid test credential. Do not disconnect or overload a production broker or Redis instance.
  6. Confirm that the event state maps as expected: normal data produces 0, a warning threshold produces 1, and a critical threshold produces 2.
  7. For metric checks, inspect the event and verify that its metrics section is populated before connecting a storage handler.
  8. Review the installed plugin’s help output and release notes whenever you pin, upgrade, or roll back an asset version.

Troubleshoot common failures

The check never runs

  • Compare the CheckConfig subscription with the agent’s subscriptions character for character.
  • Confirm that the check is published and has a valid interval or cron schedule.
  • Verify that the runtime asset is assigned to the CheckConfig and available to the agent.
  • Check that the backend is scheduling the resource and that the entity is connected.

The command reports connection or authentication errors

  • Test DNS resolution and the port from the executing agent, not from an administrator’s workstation.
  • Validate username, password, virtual host, Redis database selection, and TLS certificate settings against the plugin’s supported flags.
  • Check firewall rules and service bind addresses.
  • Review stderr without exposing secrets, and rotate any credential accidentally printed in logs.

RabbitMQ queue alerts are noisy

  • Replace a single-sample threshold with a sustained condition or a drain-time objective.
  • Pair queue depth with consumer count and node health.
  • Separate workload-growth warnings from broker-failure critical alerts.

Redis memory or replica alerts are misleading

  • Set memory thresholds according to the instance’s configured limit and workload role.
  • Check whether the monitored endpoint is a primary, replica, sentinel-managed node, or a standalone instance before choosing replica assertions.
  • Use INFO-derived metrics to distinguish connection exhaustion, memory pressure, and replication state.

Metric events contain no usable points

  • Use the metric format declared by the check’s output_metric_format.
  • Run the command manually and inspect its raw output for formatting errors.
  • Confirm that the pipeline receives the event and that the handler accepts the extracted metric names and labels.

Choose checks with a consistent decision framework

When multiple checks appear to cover the same concern, compare them on these axes:

Decision axis Question to answer
Reachability versus semantics Does a successful connection prove the application is healthy, or must the check inspect queues, consumers, INFO data, or replication?
Status versus metrics Do you need an immediate OK/WARNING/CRITICAL event, a time series, or both?
Execution location Can a local agent reach the endpoint, or is a proxy entity or dedicated monitoring agent required?
Polling cost How often can the endpoint be queried without affecting broker or Redis performance?
Security support Does the asset version support the required credentials, TLS, and secret-delivery method?
Threshold flexibility Can warning and critical values express the service-level objective, including sustained backlog or available-connection headroom?
Pipeline compatibility Does the output map cleanly to your handlers, dashboards, and incident routing?

A practical rollout is to establish one reachability check, prove event routing, then add one semantic check for each major risk: RabbitMQ queue backlog and node or cluster state; Redis memory, available connections, and replica state where applicable. Add metric checks after status behavior is reliable.
