Secure MongoDB remote access is a layered design, not a single setting. First identify whether the database runs in MongoDB Atlas or on infrastructure you manage. Then keep the network private or tightly allow-listed, require TLS, create a least-privilege database identity, and restrict firewall rules to known sources. Atlas supplies managed network controls and certificates; self-managed deployments require you to configure bind addresses, firewalls, authentication, certificates, and maintenance yourself.

Start by identifying the deployment

The correct control point depends on where MongoDB runs. Atlas and self-managed servers expose different settings and assign security responsibility differently.

Deployment Network control Identity control Encryption and operations
MongoDB Atlas Project IP access list, private endpoint, or VPC/VNet peering Atlas database users and supported federated mechanisms Atlas requires TLS and manages certificate rotation; you still configure users, source restrictions, and client settings
Self-managed MongoDB Server bind addresses, host or cloud firewalls, VPN, peering, or private routing Accounts, roles, and authentication mechanisms that you enable and maintain You configure TLS, certificates, patching, logging, backups, and incident response

MongoDB’s hardening guidance summarizes the exposure problem plainly: only trusted hosts should have access to MongoDB. A publicly reachable address must never be treated as a substitute for authentication or encryption.

Choose the network path before opening a port

Decide how a client will reach the database before changing firewall rules. The safest production design keeps database traffic on a private path. Public access can be acceptable for a tightly controlled administrative or development case, but it increases the number of controls you must monitor.

Access design Source restriction Attack-surface reduction Operational complexity Best fit
Public address with an IP allow list Allow only fixed office, VPN, bastion, or application egress addresses Better than an unrestricted public listener, but the service remains internet-addressable Lowest initial effort; requires address-management discipline Short-lived development access or environments without private networking
VPN to a trusted network Clients must join the encrypted network, then firewall rules limit database sources Removes direct public reachability when routing is private Requires VPN identity, routing, client configuration, and logging Staff or contractors who need controlled administrative access
VPC or VNet peering Cloud network routes and security groups limit which application subnets can connect Traffic stays on private cloud networking instead of traversing the public internet Requires coordinated address ranges, route tables, and cloud ownership Applications and databases in connected cloud networks
Private endpoint A private interface and network policy determine which subnets can reach the service Strongest isolation from public exposure for supported architectures More setup, DNS, routing, and cloud-provider dependencies Production systems where reducing public attack surface is a priority

For production, prefer a private endpoint or private peering when your architecture supports it. Use a public IP access list only when the risk, routing, and operational ownership are understood. A private path does not eliminate the need for TLS or authentication; it limits who can reach the encrypted, authenticated service.

Configure MongoDB Atlas securely

Atlas uses a deny-by-default security model. A client needs all three of the following: a permitted network source, a valid database user, and a TLS-capable client.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

1. Create the narrowest network rule

  1. In the Atlas console, open the project’s security area and locate Database & Network Access or its current equivalent.
  2. Open the IP access-list or network-access screen and add only the public egress address, VPN range, or private subnet that genuinely needs access.
  3. Use a single host address with a /32 mask for one fixed IPv4 address, or the smallest managed CIDR for a known application subnet. Do not use a catch-all rule for convenience.
  4. Give each entry an owner and an expiry or review date in your change records. Remove temporary entries when the task ends.
  5. If you are using a private endpoint or VPC/VNet peering, configure that connection and its route and security policies instead of adding broad public addresses.

An allow-list entry is a source filter, not an identity. Anyone who can originate traffic from an allowed address still needs a database credential and must complete the TLS handshake.

2. Create a dedicated least-privilege database user

  1. Open the project’s database-access or database-users page.
  2. Create a user for the application, reporting job, migration task, or administrator; do not share one account across unrelated services.
  3. Assign only the role and databases required for that purpose. A read-only reporting account should not receive write or administrative privileges.
  4. Choose an authentication mechanism supported by your environment. Atlas supports passwords, AWS IAM, LDAP, OIDC/OAuth 2.0, and X.509.
  5. Store secrets in a managed secret store, inject them at runtime, and rotate them on a schedule. Never place a password in source control, a shell-history command, or a ticket.

Separate identities make revocation and audit review practical. If one service is compromised, its permissions should not automatically grant access to every database or collection.

3. Use TLS-capable client settings

Atlas requires TLS to encrypt connections to databases. Use a current MongoDB driver or mongosh release that supports TLS, and use the connection string generated for the cluster rather than disabling certificate verification.

Atlas currently supports TLS 1.2 and TLS 1.3. Atlas certificates are valid for 90 days from issuance and are rotated 42 days before expiration. Clients should validate the certificate chain and hostname and should not pin a certificate in a way that breaks this managed rotation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Copy the connection string from the Atlas connect dialog for your driver or shell.
  2. Set the username and secret through the client’s supported secret mechanism.
  3. Keep TLS enabled; do not add an option that permits an invalid certificate or skips hostname validation.
  4. Run a harmless connectivity check, such as authenticating and reading the server metadata, before allowing the application to perform writes.

4. Protect the Atlas control plane

Database credentials and Atlas console credentials are different security boundaries. Require multifactor authentication for Atlas control-plane accounts, limit organization and project roles, and review users who can change network access, database users, or private connectivity. A stolen console account can alter the controls that protect every database in the project.

5. Check egress filtering and ports

When outbound filtering is enabled, Atlas documents TCP ports 27015–27017 for cluster hostnames or IP addresses. Permit only the destination ranges and ports required by the specific Atlas deployment and client path. Do not interpret this range as a reason to expose all three ports from an internet-facing firewall to every source.

6. Test the complete path

  • Test from the same subnet, host, container, or build runner that the application uses.
  • Confirm DNS resolution returns the intended private or public endpoint.
  • Confirm the source address matches an Atlas access-list entry or private-network policy.
  • Confirm the client negotiates TLS and validates the Atlas certificate.
  • Confirm the user can perform only its assigned operations.
  • Record the test result and the exact rule or identity used.

Configure a self-managed deployment

With self-managed MongoDB, the operator controls the listener and every surrounding security layer. Apply changes through configuration management where possible, and keep a rollback plan before restarting a production process.

1. Inventory interfaces and trusted sources

List the interfaces on the database host, the application subnets, administrative jump hosts, VPN ranges, and monitoring systems that genuinely need access. Distinguish private addresses from public addresses, and document which team owns each source range. If a source cannot be identified and maintained, it should not be allowed.

2. Bind only to required interfaces

Configure the server’s network bind setting so MongoDB listens on loopback and the specific private interface or interfaces required by the design. Binding to every interface, or to a public address without first enforcing authentication, TLS, and firewall controls, creates avoidable exposure.

net:
  bindIp: 127.0.0.1,10.20.4.15

The address in this example is illustrative. Replace it with the host’s actual private interface and verify that the application route reaches that address. After changing the bind setting, confirm locally that the process is listening only where intended and remotely that an unauthorized network cannot connect.

3. Enforce host or cloud firewall rules

Create an inbound rule for the port configured by your MongoDB deployment, limited to the application, VPN, bastion, or monitoring source ranges. Deny other sources by default. Apply equivalent controls in cloud security groups, network ACLs, load-balancer policies, and host firewalls; a permissive rule in any one layer can defeat a restrictive rule elsewhere.

  • Allow the application subnet to the database listener only when the application needs it.
  • Allow an administrative path through a bastion or VPN rather than opening a separate public rule for every administrator.
  • Allow monitoring only the traffic it requires, and do not reuse a broad application rule.
  • Log denied attempts and alert on unexpected source networks or repeated connection failures.

4. Enable authentication and least-privilege roles

Enable authorization in the server configuration and create separate accounts for applications, operators, migrations, and reporting. Grant the smallest role that satisfies each workload. Test the account against a non-production database before deployment, then verify that prohibited reads, writes, and administrative operations fail.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
security:
  authorization: enabled

Do not leave an unauthenticated maintenance window exposed to a routable network. If a bootstrap procedure requires temporary access, restrict it to loopback or a private administrative path, complete user creation, and restore authorization before admitting application traffic.

5. Configure TLS for every MongoDB network connection

MongoDB’s self-managed TLS guidance describes TLS as protection for all MongoDB network traffic. Use certificates issued for the server names clients actually use, protect private keys with operating-system permissions, and distribute trusted CA material through your normal configuration process.

  • Require TLS rather than allowing clients to fall back to plaintext.
  • Disable TLS 1.0 and TLS 1.1 where TLS 1.2 or newer is available.
  • Use strong cipher suites with keys of at least 128 bits.
  • Validate certificate chains and hostnames from every client environment, including containers and batch jobs.
  • Monitor certificate expiration and test renewal before the current certificate becomes invalid.

Keep the certificate authority, server certificate, and private key separate. A private key copied into an image, shared folder, or source repository should be treated as compromised and replaced.

6. Put administrative access behind a private network

A VPN can provide an encrypted, limited-access trusted network for operators. VPC or VNet peering can keep application-to-database traffic on private cloud routes. A private endpoint can provide a private interface to a supported managed service. In every design, still enforce database authentication, TLS, and source-specific firewall rules.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Restart and verify safely

  1. Validate the configuration file syntax with the deployment’s normal service-management process.
  2. Apply the change during a maintenance window or through a rolling procedure appropriate to the topology.
  3. From an approved client, authenticate over TLS and perform a read-only health check.
  4. From an unapproved network, confirm that the connection is blocked or cannot route to the listener.
  5. Check logs for rejected authentication, TLS failures, and unexpected source addresses.
  6. Keep the previous configuration available until the authorized path and application behavior are confirmed.

Verify security, not just connectivity

A successful TCP connection proves only that a route and listener exist. Use a verification checklist that tests network restriction, encryption, identity, and authorization separately.

Control What to verify Expected result
Source restriction Connect from an approved source, then from an unapproved source Approved traffic reaches authentication; unapproved traffic is blocked or has no route
TLS Inspect client connection details and server logs The session negotiates TLS 1.2 or TLS 1.3 where supported, and certificate validation succeeds
Authentication Use the intended account with a valid and invalid secret Valid credentials authenticate; invalid credentials are rejected and logged
Authorization Attempt one permitted and one prohibited operation The permitted operation succeeds and the prohibited operation fails
Secret handling Review process arguments, logs, images, and repositories Passwords and private keys are absent from exposed locations
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Troubleshoot the most common failures

Symptom Likely layer Checks and corrective action
Connection times out Routing or firewall Check DNS, route tables, VPN or peering state, host firewall rules, cloud security groups, and whether the client source address is allow-listed.
Connection is refused Listener or bind address Confirm the service is running, the configured port is correct, and MongoDB is bound to the interface reached by the client.
Authentication failed User, mechanism, or secret Verify the username, authentication database, selected mechanism, account status, and secret-store value. Do not solve it by granting a broader role.
TLS handshake or certificate error Protocol, trust, or hostname Use a TLS-capable driver, trust the intended CA, connect with the certificate’s valid hostname, and check that protocol and cipher requirements overlap.
Works from a laptop but not the application Different egress or runtime Compare the application’s actual source address, DNS resolver, route, container trust store, and outbound firewall policy with the laptop’s path.
Access stops after a certificate change Certificate lifecycle Check certificate validity and renewal timing. Atlas certificates are issued for 90 days and rotated 42 days before expiration; self-managed certificates require your own renewal process.
Unexpected access from the internet Overbroad exposure Review bind addresses, every firewall layer, public load-balancer rules, and Atlas access-list entries. Remove broad rules and rotate credentials if exposure was possible.

Operate the configuration after launch

Review network entries

Schedule reviews for every Atlas access-list entry, firewall rule, peering route, VPN group, and private endpoint. Remove a rule when the workload, office address, contractor, or migration ends. Keep temporary exceptions visibly temporary.

Rotate identities and certificates

Rotate application secrets without interrupting service by creating a replacement credential, deploying it, testing authentication, and then revoking the old credential. For self-managed TLS, renew before expiration and verify the complete chain from each client type. For Atlas, ensure clients tolerate the documented 90-day certificate lifecycle and 42-day pre-expiration rotation.

Monitor and audit

Collect authentication failures, authorization denials, firewall denies, TLS errors, configuration changes, and private-network changes. Alert on unusual source addresses, sudden rule additions, repeated failures, or administrative changes outside a change window. Retain enough context to identify the account, source, action, and time.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Separate duties

Give application owners control of application credentials, network owners control of routes and firewalls, and a small set of administrators control of project or server security settings. Separation limits the damage from one compromised account and makes reviews more meaningful.

Choose an access design by scenario

  • Production application in the same cloud: Use a private endpoint or VPC/VNet peering, private DNS and routes, restrictive security policies, TLS, and a dedicated least-privilege identity.
  • Remote administration: Put operators on a controlled VPN or behind a bastion, allow only that source range, require MFA for control-plane access, and use an administrator account with the minimum necessary role.
  • Short-lived development: Use a narrowly scoped public access-list entry for a fixed address only when private networking is unavailable. Set an expiry or review date, use TLS and a dedicated user, and remove the rule afterward.
  • Multi-cloud or hybrid deployment: Compare private connectivity, VPN routing, address-range overlap, DNS behavior, logging, and portability before selecting peering or endpoints. Keep the database listener restricted to the interfaces that serve the approved path.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Allowing every IPv4 address because a client’s address changes.
  • Binding MongoDB to a public interface before authentication and TLS are enforced.
  • Opening a firewall rule without limiting source addresses.
  • Assuming a private endpoint makes plaintext or weak credentials acceptable.
  • Using one powerful account for applications, migrations, reporting, and administrators.
  • Disabling certificate or hostname verification to bypass a client error.
  • Forgetting outbound filtering when Atlas cluster connectivity requires TCP ports 27015–27017.
  • Failing to test from the application’s real runtime environment.
  • Leaving temporary network rules, VPN membership, or credentials active after a project ends.

The secure pattern is consistent across Atlas and self-managed MongoDB: reduce who can reach the listener, encrypt every connection, authenticate every client, authorize only required actions, and continuously remove access that no longer has a business purpose.
