Vintage Story uses two layers of access control: roles provide a common set of permissions and settings, while player-specific privileges add exceptions for one person. New players normally receive the survival-player role, suplayer. You can make yourself an administrator with /op <playername>, assign another player with /player <username> role <rolename>, and change a role’s permissions with /role <rolename> privilege grant|revoke <privilegename>.
The commands work without restarting the server in normal installations. Keep console access available, however: a suplayer cannot manage privileges, and role syntax or stock role definitions can differ between Vintage Story versions.
How Vintage Story access control works
A player receives the privileges attached to their role when they join. A role can also define non-permission settings, such as display name, chat colour, spawn point, game mode and land-claim allowance. A player-specific privilege is an additional exception layered on top of the role; it does not replace the role.
- Use a role when several players should follow the same policy.
- Use a player-specific privilege when one person needs an exception without changing everyone in that role.
- Use the server console or an administrator account for changes. Ordinary survival players cannot administer roles.
Commands are case-sensitive in practice when they refer to names, so copy the player’s username and the role code exactly as they appear on your server.

Check access and back up the configuration first
Use the console when you are locked out
On a fresh dedicated server, connect to the server console before trying to make yourself an operator. If you already have an account with sufficient administrative privileges, you can enter the commands in-game. The console is the recovery path if no player can administer roles.
Back up serverconfig.json
Stop the server, or use the host’s file editor while the server is not writing the file, and make a copy of serverconfig.json. A malformed JSON file can prevent the server from starting. Preserve quotation marks, commas and the existing structure when editing it.

Expect version differences
The official role-command documentation has not always been updated in step with the game. Hosting guides also disagree about the built-in role list and the meaning of privilege levels. Treat the commands below as the current documented pattern, then confirm accepted syntax with your server’s /help output.
Choose the default role for new players
By default, new joiners receive suplayer, the survival-player role. To make new arrivals visitors instead, edit the server configuration while the server is stopped:
- Open
serverconfig.jsonin the server’s configuration directory. - Find the
DefaultRoleCodesetting. - Set its value to
suvisitor, retaining the quotation marks and the comma if another setting follows it. - Save the file and start the server again.
"DefaultRoleCode": "suvisitor",Use suvisitor when newcomers should be able to connect and observe but not immediately receive normal survival-player capabilities. Existing players keep their current role; changing the default affects players who are assigned the default when they join, not an automatic conversion of every account.
If you want ordinary new players to build and survive, leave the default as suplayer and assign restrictive roles only where needed.
Make yourself an administrator
Use the /op alias
In the console or as an account that already has permission to administer players, run:

/op <yourname>/op is an alias for:
/player <yourname> role adminReplace <yourname> with the exact player name. On a new dedicated server, run this from the console first; you cannot reliably grant yourself administrative access from an ordinary in-game account that lacks the required privilege.
Remove or change administrator access
Assigning a different role replaces the player’s role assignment. Before downgrading the only administrator, confirm that another trusted account or the console can still perform administrative commands.
Assign a role to a player
Role assignment works whether the player is online or offline:
/player <username> role <rolename>For example, to give Alex the normal survival-player role:
/player alex role suplayerTo make Alex a visitor:
/player alex role suvisitorUse the exact role code configured on your server. A role change normally takes effect without a server restart. If the player is online and a command appears not to have taken effect, have them reconnect and then verify the assignment.
What a role assignment does
- It changes the role-level privileges inherited by that player.
- It can change role-level settings such as game mode, spawn point or claim allowance.
- It does not automatically erase a separately granted player-specific privilege unless your version’s command explicitly removes that exception.
Grant or revoke a privilege for an entire role
Use the role command when every member of a role should receive the same capability:
/role <rolename> privilege grant <privilegename>
/role <rolename> privilege revoke <privilegename>For example, the pattern for granting a privilege to all survival players is:

/role suplayer privilege grant <privilegename>Replace the placeholder with the privilege name shown by your server’s command help or privilege listing. To undo it, use the same role and privilege with revoke. The change applies to the role rather than only to currently connected players.
Role-wide policy versus a one-off exception
If builders, moderators or trusted friends all need the same capability, put it on a dedicated role. If only one player needs it temporarily, avoid broadening the role: keep the role unchanged and add a player-specific privilege instead.
Give one player an individual privilege
Vintage Story supports player-level privileges in addition to role privileges. They stack on top of the player’s role, so an individual exception does not require creating a new role or promoting the entire group.
- Identify the player’s current role and the exact privilege name using the server’s help and listing commands.
- Open the player-privilege command syntax on your version with
/help playeror the equivalent command help. - Grant the privilege to that player only, following the syntax displayed by the server.
- Record the exception and test the command while the player is online.
- Use the matching revoke form when the temporary access is no longer needed.
The exact player-level command form is not consistent across all published guides and game versions, so do not substitute the role command for it. If the command is rejected, read the server’s own help output rather than guessing a parameter order.

After a change, verify both the assignment and the resulting privilege set:
/list privileges
/list roleThese listings are documented command references, but their output and accepted arguments can vary by release. Check that:
- the username is spelled exactly as stored by the server;
- the intended role code appears for that player;
- the privilege appears on the role or player listing where you added it;
- the player reconnects if a live session still shows the old access state.
Role settings beyond permissions
A role entry can control more than whether a command is allowed. The documented role fields include the following:

These settings make roles useful for structured communities—for example, separating visitors, survival players, moderators and creative staff—without relying solely on individual commands.
Understand the built-in role list on your version
Published guides do not agree on the stock roles supplied by every Vintage Story release or hosting setup. One commonly documented set contains nine roles:

Another commonly cited configuration lists only suplayer, suvisitor, crplayer and crvisitor. Do not assume that a role exists because it appears in a guide: inspect your own serverconfig.json and use the role-list command before assigning it.
Privilege levels are not a universal rank scale
Guides also disagree about the meaning of the numeric level associated with a role. One example lists suvisitor at -1, suplayer at 0, sumod at 200 and admin at 99999, describing those values as command-rank tiers. Another explanation treats the level as the point at which a player may build in protected areas.
Because those interpretations conflict, use the level shown in your own configuration and the behavior documented by your installed version. Do not infer that a larger number automatically grants every administrative capability, and do not edit a level merely to solve a missing privilege until you have checked the specific privilege and role assignment.

serverconfig.json contains server settings, including the default role and role definitions. Many server settings can also be changed at runtime with /serverconfig. World settings are handled separately through console commands. The distinction matters when a permission change appears correct but a world rule still blocks the action.
For role entries, confirm the behavior on your installed release before editing at runtime: general documentation says most server settings are live-editable, but it does not guarantee that every role field reloads immediately. A direct command assignment is usually safer for a player change; use a configuration edit for the default role or persistent role definitions.

Troubleshooting common problems
New players cannot build
- Check whether
DefaultRoleCodeis set tosuvisitor. Visitors are intentionally more restricted. - Confirm the player was assigned
suplayeror another building-capable role with/player <username> role <rolename>. - Check land claims and protected areas separately; a role privilege does not necessarily override world protection rules.
- Have the player reconnect, then verify the role listing.
/op or /player is denied
The account issuing the command lacks the required administrative privilege, or the command is being entered in the wrong context. Use the dedicated-server console to bootstrap the first administrator. A suplayer cannot manage privileges by design.
The role name is rejected
The role may not exist in this release, may have a different code, or may be misspelled. Inspect the role list and configuration instead of copying a role set from another server.

- Confirm you changed the intended role, not a similarly named visitor or creative role.
- Check whether a player-specific revoke is overriding the expected access.
- Verify the privilege spelling with the server’s listing or help command.
- Reconnect the affected player if the running session has not refreshed its permissions.
Editing the JSON broke startup
Restore the backup, validate that every property name and value is enclosed correctly, and check commas—especially the comma after "DefaultRoleCode": "suvisitor" when another property follows. Start the server only after the file parses again.
A practical least-privilege layout
For a small cooperative server, leave newcomers as suplayer, reserve admin for the owner and use a moderator role for trusted helpers. For a public server, set DefaultRoleCode to suvisitor, then promote established players to a normal survival role after checking them. Keep creative and spectator access in separate roles so a moderation promotion does not accidentally grant a different game mode.
Document every manual exception: the player name, privilege, reason, date and intended expiry. When the exception ends, revoke the player-level privilege rather than permanently broadening a shared role.

Use the server console to recover administrative control, verify the exact role and privilege names on your release, and prefer narrowly scoped player exceptions over expanding a role for everyone.
