Redis can make WordPress reuse expensive database and application results instead of rebuilding them on every request. Install a maintained Redis object-cache integration, secure the Redis server, add the connection settings before the end of wp-config.php, enable the object-cache.php drop-in, and verify the connection from both Redis and WordPress. Redis complements page caching, PHP OPcache, and browser or CDN caching; it does not replace them.

What Redis caching does in WordPress

WordPress has an object-cache API, exposed through functions such as wp_cache_get() and wp_cache_set(). By default, that cache is non-persistent: its contents disappear when the request ends. A persistent object-cache drop-in stores those objects in Redis so later requests can reuse them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This is different from caching a complete HTML page. Redis usually stores application objects such as expensive query results, options, and other data requested by WordPress or a plugin. A page-cache drop-in stores rendered responses, while a browser or CDN cache stores responses closer to visitors. PHP OPcache stores compiled PHP bytecode. A fast site may use all four layers.

Layer What it stores Typical WordPress component What it does not do
Persistent object cache Reusable application objects and query results Redis through wp-content/object-cache.php It does not automatically cache every complete HTML page or static file
Page cache Rendered HTTP responses An advanced-cache.php drop-in or server cache It does not provide persistent storage for arbitrary WordPress objects
PHP OPcache Compiled PHP bytecode PHP runtime configuration It does not cache database query results
Browser/CDN cache Responses and static assets at the client or edge Browser headers or a CDN It does not replace server-side application caching

The benefit depends on the workload, database latency, PHP version, network placement, and cache hit rate. There is no authoritative universal percentage improvement for Redis on WordPress, so measure your own site rather than promising a fixed gain.

Check the environment before installing

Redis must be running somewhere the PHP process can reach. It can be on the same server, on a private network, or supplied as a managed service. Gather the connection details before touching WordPress:

  • Redis hostname or IP address and TCP port. The Redis CLI defaults to localhost:6379, but production deployments commonly use another endpoint.
  • Authentication method: no authentication only inside a tightly controlled local setup; otherwise an ACL user and password, or the legacy password mechanism supported by your deployment.
  • Logical database number, if your provider assigns a specific database.
  • Whether traffic requires TLS, and which Redis client and PHP extension are available.
  • Firewall rules allowing the web or PHP hosts to reach Redis while denying untrusted sources.
Topology Advantages Risks and checks
Redis on the WordPress server Lowest network latency and no inter-server route Competes for memory and CPU; a server failure affects both application and cache
Redis on a private network Separates resources and can serve several application servers Requires firewall rules, routing, authentication, and latency monitoring
Managed Redis Provider handles much of the availability and maintenance work Confirm TLS, ACL support, failover behavior, network allow-lists, limits, and recurring operational cost

Confirm that the PHP runtime, not only your own shell, can resolve the hostname and connect to the port. A command that succeeds from an administrator laptop does not prove that the web server can reach Redis.

Secure Redis before connecting WordPress

Redis documentation describes Redis as a service for trusted clients inside trusted environments. Do not publish its TCP port directly to the internet. A reachable unauthenticated instance can allow destructive commands, including FLUSHALL, and authentication by itself is not a substitute for network controls.

  • Place Redis on a private interface or private subnet and firewall the port so only the application hosts can connect.
  • Use Redis ACLs where available. Create a dedicated application identity with only the commands and key patterns the integration needs. If your deployment uses the older password mechanism, enable it deliberately and understand its limitations.
  • Use TLS when the connection crosses a network you do not fully trust. Configure the Redis server, PHP client, certificate validation, and plugin scheme together; a TLS server cannot be contacted successfully with a plain TCP setting.
  • Keep credentials out of screenshots, source control, logs, and a publicly readable wp-config.php. Use the host’s secret-management facility or protected environment variables where available.
  • Restrict administrative access to Redis and monitor connection failures, authentication failures, memory pressure, evictions, and failovers.

Protected mode helps prevent accidental exposure, but it is not a complete deployment design. Bind Redis to the interfaces it needs, enforce a firewall policy, and test from the actual PHP host.

Install a maintained WordPress integration

Redis Object Cache is the prominent option in the official WordPress directory. It supplies the persistent object-cache backend and supports common PHP clients and deployment patterns, including Predis, PhpRedis, Relay, replication, Sentinel, and clustering. Exact capabilities and settings depend on the installed release and your topology.

  1. In the WordPress dashboard, open Plugins → Add New.
  2. Search for Redis Object Cache, confirm that the listing is the maintained integration you intend to use, and select Install Now.
  3. Select Activate. Do not assume activation alone has enabled persistent caching; the drop-in still has to be configured and enabled.
  4. If your host manages plugins through deployment tooling, install the same version in that process and make sure deployment does not delete wp-content/object-cache.php.

For a premium or managed alternative, compare compatibility with the host and PHP client, remote latency, authentication and TLS, replication or cluster requirements, diagnostics, multisite and WooCommerce behavior, support expectations, and total operating cost. Object Cache Pro is positioned as a business-class option with optimization, debugging, TLS, and support-oriented features; verify current terms and compatibility for your environment before choosing it.

Put the Redis connection settings in the right place

Connection constants or environment-backed settings belong in wp-config.php, or in the configuration mechanism your host documents, before the line that says That's all, stop editing!. Do not copy a localhost example into production without changing the endpoint, credentials, database, and TLS mode.

The following illustrates the commonly used Redis Object Cache constant names. Use only settings supported by the version you installed, and obtain secret values from environment variables or your host’s secret store rather than hard-coding them.

$redis_host = getenv('WP_REDIS_HOST') ?: '127.0.0.1';
$redis_port = getenv('WP_REDIS_PORT') ?: 6379;
$redis_database = getenv('WP_REDIS_DATABASE');
$redis_password = getenv('WP_REDIS_PASSWORD');
$redis_scheme = getenv('WP_REDIS_SCHEME') ?: 'tcp';

if ($redis_host) {
    define('WP_REDIS_HOST', $redis_host);
}
if ($redis_port) {
    define('WP_REDIS_PORT', (int) $redis_port);
}
if ($redis_database !== false && $redis_database !== '') {
    define('WP_REDIS_DATABASE', (int) $redis_database);
}
if ($redis_password !== false && $redis_password !== '') {
    define('WP_REDIS_PASSWORD', $redis_password);
}
if ($redis_scheme) {
    define('WP_REDIS_SCHEME', $redis_scheme);
}

define('WP_REDIS_PREFIX', 'example-site:');

The prefix is important when one Redis service is shared by multiple applications or sites. Choose a stable, site-specific prefix and review it before changing domains, moving environments, or introducing multisite. A password containing shell or PHP-special characters must be passed through the secret mechanism in a way that preserves the exact value.

For a remote TLS service, use the scheme and certificate options documented for your plugin and PHP client. A configuration that specifies TLS on the server but leaves WordPress using plain TCP will fail even when the hostname and password are correct.

Enable the persistent object-cache drop-in

The integration works through wp-content/object-cache.php. That file is a WordPress drop-in and is separate from the page-cache file advanced-cache.php. A site can have one, both, or neither.

  1. Open the plugin’s settings or diagnostics screen and select its Enable Object Cache action when offered.
  2. Alternatively, from the WordPress directory, run wp help redis to see the commands exposed by your installed release, then use the release’s enable command.
  3. Check that wp-content/object-cache.php exists and is readable by the PHP user. Deployment scripts, ownership changes, or another cache plugin can remove or replace it.
  4. Leave any existing page-cache configuration in place unless you have a separate reason to change it. Redis object caching and page caching solve different problems.

WP_CACHE by itself does not create a persistent object cache and does not improve performance unless an appropriate caching drop-in is installed. Do not treat a true WP_CACHE value as proof that Redis is active.

Verify Redis from both sides

Verification should prove network access, WordPress integration, and the presence of the drop-in. Run the Redis test from the same server or container that runs PHP:

redis-cli -h redis.internal.example -p 6379 ping

The expected response is PONG. If the deployment uses authentication, ACLs, or TLS, add the corresponding options for that deployment instead of testing an unauthenticated plain-TCP connection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

From the WordPress directory, run:

wp cache type
wp help redis

wp cache type should report the active persistent backend rather than Default. The wp help redis output shows the exact status, enable, disable, and diagnostic subcommands available in your plugin version; use those commands rather than assuming a subcommand from a different release.

Also inspect the plugin’s administration or diagnostics screen and confirm that:

  • the connection is reported as reachable and authenticated;
  • the selected host, port, database, client, and TLS mode match the intended environment;
  • wp-content/object-cache.php is present and loaded;
  • the reported Redis version and PHP client are supported by the integration; and
  • cache hits and misses change during normal traffic instead of remaining at zero.

Do not claim a speed improvement from a successful PONG. Measure the site before and after enabling Redis under comparable traffic and cache-warm conditions.

Measure whether Redis helps

Capture a baseline before enabling the drop-in. Record representative uncached and cached requests, server response time, database time, PHP time, page-cache hit rate, CPU and memory use, and the behavior of important logged-in or personalized paths. Repeat the same measurements after Redis is warmed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Compare the same URLs and request types, not an anonymous homepage before Redis with a logged-in checkout after it.
  • Separate a page-cache hit from a WordPress request that actually executes PHP. Redis may reduce work inside the latter while changing nothing about a response served entirely by the page cache.
  • Watch Redis hit and miss behavior, memory usage, evictions, connection errors, and latency. A high miss rate, undersized cache, or remote network delay can erase the benefit.
  • Measure database query count and total database time. Redis is most useful when repeated object lookups or expensive queries are a material part of the request.
  • Use a representative observation window rather than a single request. Results vary with traffic mix, cache warmth, deploys, content changes, and background jobs.

Redis is an optimization layer, not a guarantee of a particular percentage reduction. If measurements show no improvement, profile the database, PHP, page-cache hit rate, Redis hit/miss ratio, and network path before removing or scaling the cache.

Flush and invalidate data safely

Use targeted invalidation whenever the application or plugin provides it. A full flush removes every cached object in the selected Redis database and forces all requests to rebuild their data.

wp cache flush

WP-CLI warns that this can have a production impact. On multisite, it typically flushes the object cache for all sites in the network, not just the site whose directory you are using. Run it during a maintenance window when possible, and warn operators that the first requests afterward may be slower while the cache repopulates.

Before flushing, review the key prefix or salt, database number, and multisite scope. Stale or cross-site data can result from two applications sharing a prefix or from an incorrect environment migration; a broad flush hides the symptom without correcting the namespace mistake.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely causes Checks and corrective action
Connection refused or timeout Redis is stopped, the endpoint or port is wrong, a firewall blocks the route, a container network is misconfigured, or TLS modes differ Run redis-cli from the PHP host; verify the process, DNS, route, firewall, port, and TLS settings. Do not test only from your workstation.
Authentication error Wrong password, wrong ACL username, disabled user, or a client that does not support the selected authentication method Confirm the username and password in the secret store, test with the same authentication mode in redis-cli, and verify client support.
Plugin is active but cache type is Default object-cache.php is missing, unreadable, replaced by another plugin, or removed during deployment Inspect the file path and ownership, review deployment artifacts, and use the plugin’s enable action or the current wp redis command.
Failures after failover or clustering Topology settings do not match the service, or the PHP client lacks required replication, Sentinel, or cluster support Confirm the plugin’s topology configuration and client compatibility. Test failover in a controlled window.
Stale or cross-site data Incorrect key prefix, cache salt, database number, or multisite scope Review namespaces and network configuration first. Flush only after recording the cause and assessing the effect on every site sharing the database.
No measured speedup Most traffic is already served by page cache, the workload has few reusable objects, hit rate is low, or Redis latency and evictions are high Profile database and PHP time, page-cache hits, Redis hits and misses, memory pressure, and network latency under representative traffic.

Multisite, WooCommerce, and shared Redis considerations

Multisite increases the cost of an operational mistake because one Redis service may hold keys for many sites. Use a deliberate prefix and database strategy, confirm how the integration scopes keys, and document which administrators are allowed to flush the cache. Treat wp cache flush as a network-wide operation unless your deployment documentation proves otherwise.

WooCommerce and other logged-in or personalized applications still benefit from persistent object caching, but they require careful page-cache exclusions and correct invalidation. Do not use Redis object caching as a reason to cache private cart, account, or checkout HTML publicly. Test product updates, inventory changes, sessions, scheduled jobs, and administrator actions after enabling the drop-in.

For replication, Sentinel, or clustering, the advertised feature is not a substitute for topology-specific configuration. Record which node or service endpoint the plugin should use, how read and write traffic is handled, what happens during failover, and whether the PHP client reconnects as expected.

Operational checklist

  • Redis is reachable from the PHP runtime through a private, firewall-controlled path.
  • Authentication, ACLs, and TLS match the deployment’s trust boundary.
  • Secrets are supplied through protected configuration, not committed source code.
  • The plugin version and PHP client support the selected Redis topology.
  • Connection settings are loaded before the end of wp-config.php.
  • wp-content/object-cache.php exists, is readable, and is not overwritten by deployment.
  • redis-cli ping returns PONG from the application host.
  • wp cache type reports the persistent backend, and plugin diagnostics show hits and misses.
  • Page-cache, OPcache, browser, and CDN behavior has been evaluated separately.
  • Flush procedures, multisite scope, monitoring, and rollback steps are documented.
  • Before-and-after measurements use comparable requests and a representative traffic window.

When Redis is the right next step

Redis is most compelling when WordPress repeatedly performs expensive object lookups or database work that can be reused across requests, especially on dynamic, logged-in, multisite, or high-traffic installations. If most visitors receive a reliable full-page cache and profiling shows little PHP or database time, adding Redis may produce little visible change. In that case, fix the measured bottleneck first.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A sound deployment keeps Redis private, configures the integration for the actual host and client, verifies the drop-in from WordPress, and treats performance as a measured outcome rather than a promise. With those safeguards, Redis becomes a durable object-cache layer alongside—not instead of—the rest of the WordPress performance stack.
