Whether RD Web works in Edge or Chrome depends on which remote-desktop experience you use. The separate HTML5 Remote Desktop web client supports modern browsers including Edge and Chrome. A legacy RD Web Access page that depends on ActiveX—or a specific Web SSO setup using the built-in Windows Remote Desktop Connection client—may require Internet Explorer mode in Microsoft Edge. Chrome does not provide Edge’s IE mode.
The safest configuration starts by identifying the exact page, client, and sign-in workflow users need. A browser switch alone cannot convert a legacy portal into the HTML5 client, and installing the HTML5 client does not automatically repair an old ActiveX-dependent page.
First identify which Remote Desktop page you are using
“RD Web Access” and the HTML5 Remote Desktop web client are related but distinct browser experiences. The RD Web Access page is a portal; the HTML5 client is a separate client that an administrator deploys and publishes. Microsoft says the HTML5 client does not replace the RD Web Access page, and the two experiences use different URLs.
This distinction matters because changing a browser setting cannot make every kind of RD Web page compatible. The right approach depends on whether users need a legacy portal feature, the inbox Windows Remote Desktop Connection client, or the separately deployed HTML5 client.

How to recognize the experience
Ask for the complete URL users open and what happens after sign-in. A portal that displays published desktops or RemoteApps is not necessarily the HTML5 client. The administrator may have published a separate web-client address, while the traditional RD Web Access address remains available for portal functions or for launching the inbox client.
Also ask what is failing. A missing Remote Desktop tab, an absent launch control, an ActiveX warning, repeated authentication, or an SSO prompt points to a different investigation than an HTML5 page that loads but cannot connect. Record the browser, Windows sign-in method, gateway, and whether the user is launching a browser session or the locally installed Remote Desktop Connection client.
Microsoft’s browser guidance supports Edge and Chrome for the HTML5 web client. That does not mean Chrome can run an ActiveX-dependent legacy portal, or that it has an equivalent to Edge IE mode.
When a legacy RD Web page needs Edge IE mode
Standard Microsoft Edge does not support ActiveX controls. Microsoft’s legacy RD Web troubleshooting guidance describes a specific case in which the MsRdpClientShell - MsRdpWebAccess.dll add-on is loaded as an ActiveX control. If a portal feature is missing or a resource will not launch in standard Edge, that legacy dependency is one possibility to investigate.
Do not assume every RD Web Access installation requires IE mode. First determine whether the affected users are on the older portal path and whether the problem involves an ActiveX-dependent control, a missing Remote Desktop tab, a launch action, or authentication. The existence of an RD Web Access page alone does not establish that it needs IE mode.
IE mode is an Edge compatibility engine, not a general-purpose setting that makes Chrome behave like Internet Explorer. It should be scoped to the legacy URL that needs it. Keeping modern pages in normal Edge avoids unnecessarily applying legacy behavior to unrelated sites.
Web SSO is a specific supported scenario
Microsoft’s supported configuration for Web SSO through the inbox Remote Desktop Connection client on Windows explicitly requires connecting to the RD Web page through Internet Explorer mode in Edge. This is a scenario-specific requirement, not a general instruction to put every Remote Desktop page into IE mode.

For that Web SSO scenario, Microsoft lists these server-side requirements:
- RD Web uses form-based authentication.
- RD Gateway uses password authentication.
- The deployment setting Use RD Gateway credentials for remote computers is enabled.
Microsoft identifies other configurations as unsupported for this Web SSO scenario and says smart cards do not support this configuration. If SSO continues to prompt or fails, check these requirements against the actual deployment rather than changing browser settings at random.
Verify that users are actually using the inbox Remote Desktop Connection client on Windows. A browser-based HTML5 session is a different client and does not become this SSO scenario merely because the user opened the same RD Web address.
Test a legacy site locally in Edge
A local IE-mode reload can help an administrator check whether a particular RD Web path works with the IE-mode engine. It is a test or temporary bridge, not the recommended organization-wide management method.
Recommended Free Tools
- Allow IE-mode reloads if policy permits. In Edge, open
edge://settings/defaultBrowserand enable Allow sites to be reloaded in Internet Explorer mode. An administrator can also control the setting with theInternetExplorerIntegrationReloadInIEModeAllowedpolicy. - Open the RD Web site in Edge. Use the address the organization has designated for its RD Web page. Test the same fully qualified address users normally enter; testing a short name or a different alias can hide certificate and site-list problems.
- Reload the site in IE mode. Select Settings and more (…) > Reload in Internet Explorer mode.
- Check the affected workflow. Test the particular portal feature that failed in standard Edge, such as the control, RemoteApp launch, or SSO path. A successful test indicates that IE mode may address that site path; it does not prove that every user or every RD Web feature needs it.
A site remembered through this local experience lasts 30 days by default. Microsoft describes the local entry as a way to keep a user working while the organization’s site list is updated. Local reload entries do not configure Chrome and are not a substitute for centrally managing a legacy application.
If the reload command is unavailable, the organization may have disabled local IE-mode controls or may require policy-based management. Do not ask users to bypass that policy by using an unapproved browser or an alternate URL; give IT the exact address and failure details so the managed configuration can be evaluated.
Manage the site centrally with the Enterprise Mode Site List
For a managed organization, Microsoft’s centrally managed approach is to add the RD Web URL to the Enterprise Mode Site List and set its Open in behavior to IE mode. IT can use Microsoft Edge’s Enterprise Site List Manager or the organization’s existing Enterprise Mode Site List.

- Add the site entry. In the site-list management process, add the RD Web URL users need to open. Include the exact host or path that requires compatibility, rather than broadly forcing unrelated sites into IE mode.
- Choose the browser behavior. Set the entry’s Open in value to IE mode.
- Point Edge to the managed list. Configure the
InternetExplorerIntegrationSiteListpolicy with the location of the hosted site-list XML or the organization’s managed list. - Apply the policy and restart Edge. Microsoft says the policy change requires a browser restart to take effect. Allow for normal policy-delivery time on managed devices before concluding that the list failed.
- Verify the result for affected users or devices. Confirm that the entry is applied to the intended scope and that the site opens with Edge’s IE-mode indicator. Test the actual launch and authentication workflow, not just the presence of the indicator.
If a user has a local reload entry while IT is updating the managed list, treat the two as different management scopes: the local entry helps with an individual test or interim use, while the site list is the organization-wide configuration. Once the managed entry is working, remove reliance on local exceptions where policy permits.
Microsoft also documents configurable sites for cases where only part of a server needs IE mode, allowing selected sites to participate in IE-mode engine determination. This is a more specific site-level option; use it only when the deployment needs that behavior rather than applying it by default. Document the affected host and path so future administrators understand why the exception exists.
Operational checks after publishing the list
- Confirm the XML or managed-list location is reachable by the intended devices.
- Check that the policy is assigned to the same users or device groups that access RD Web.
- Restart Edge after the policy arrives, then reopen the browser and test again.
- Verify every published alias users might enter. A site-list entry for one hostname does not automatically cover a different alias.
- Test a normal modern page and the RD Web page separately to ensure the compatibility scope is not broader than intended.
Use Chrome with the HTML5 Remote Desktop web client
If users need Chrome, first establish whether they can use the HTML5 Remote Desktop web client instead of the legacy portal feature. Microsoft lists Chrome, Edge, Safari, and Firefox as supported modern browsers for that client. Browser support is only one part of the setup: administrators must deploy and publish the client and meet its server and certificate requirements.
Microsoft’s administrator setup guidance covers RD Gateway, RD Connection Broker, and RD Web Access as deployment components, as well as installing and publishing the client and importing the broker certificate. Follow that guide for the exact topology and commands; a browser compatibility setting by itself does not deploy the client.
The public certificate name should match the RD Web URL. If the broker certificate changes, the web-client configuration must be updated and the client republished. A mismatch between the name users access and the certificate name can cause certificate-name problems.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Before directing a large user group to Chrome, have IT test the complete path: sign in, view the published resource, start a session, reconnect if applicable, and sign out. Confirm that the browser reaches the intended HTML5 client URL rather than silently falling back to the legacy portal. Keep the supported-browser statement tied to the HTML5 client and its current documentation. It is not evidence that a Chrome browser can run an ActiveX-dependent page or reproduce Edge’s IE-mode behavior.
Troubleshoot by symptom
RD Web content or a launch control is missing in standard Edge
- Determine whether the affected portal is the legacy RD Web Access experience and whether the missing feature depends on ActiveX.
- Confirm that the user is not expecting an HTML5-client feature at the legacy portal URL.
- If the problem is tied to the legacy control, test the site in Edge IE mode using the local reload option if policy permits.
- If the test resolves the specific issue, have IT add the URL to the managed Enterprise Mode Site List rather than relying on a temporary local entry.
- If the issue remains in IE mode, investigate the server, authentication, certificate, and published-resource configuration instead of assuming the browser engine is the only cause.
A Chrome user asks for IE mode
- Explain that Internet Explorer mode is a Microsoft Edge feature; it is not a Chrome setting.
- Check whether the organization can provide the separate HTML5 Remote Desktop web client for the user’s workflow.
- Give the user the correct HTML5 client URL if one has been published; do not assume the traditional RD Web URL is interchangeable.
- Do not promise that Chrome supports the same legacy ActiveX behavior as IE mode.
Web SSO still prompts or fails
- Confirm that the user is using the inbox Remote Desktop Connection client on Windows and reaches RD Web through Edge IE mode.
- Compare the deployment with the documented requirements: RD Web form-based authentication, RD Gateway password authentication, and Use RD Gateway credentials for remote computers.
- Check whether a smart card is being used; Microsoft does not support smart cards for this Web SSO setup.
- Separate an SSO failure from a general sign-in failure by testing the same credentials through the documented non-SSO path.
- Record whether the prompt occurs at RD Web, the gateway, or the Remote Desktop Connection client; each stage points to a different configuration area.
The HTML5 client opens but cannot connect
- Check that the deployment has RD Gateway, RD Connection Broker, and RD Web Access in the intended topology.
- Review the administrator procedure for installing and publishing the client rather than changing a browser flag.
- Review the broker certificate import and the client configuration. If the broker certificate changed, update the web-client configuration and republish it.
- Verify that the URL users open uses the public certificate name that matches the RD Web URL.
- Test in another supported modern browser to distinguish a client deployment issue from a browser-specific issue, while keeping the same URL and user account.
The browser reports a certificate warning
Check that RD Web Access uses a trusted certificate and that the server fully qualified domain name users access matches the name on the certificate. For the HTML5 client, also verify the matching public certificate name and the broker-certificate procedure in the deployment guidance. Do not train users to ignore a certificate warning: an alternate address may be the real configuration error.

The IE-mode indicator appears, but the page still fails
An IE-mode indicator confirms the selected browser engine, not that the server-side application is healthy. Recheck the exact URL, the affected control, authentication method, and published resource. If only one path fails, compare its host and path with the site-list entry and with the address used by a working user.
Common configuration pitfalls
- Confusing the clients: Treating the HTML5 web client and the RD Web Access portal as the same URL leads to incorrect browser advice.
- Assuming all RD Web installations need IE mode: Use the legacy mode only when the affected workflow has a documented compatibility dependency.
- Trying to configure Chrome for IE mode: Chrome can be used for the HTML5 client, but Microsoft’s IE-mode route is Edge-specific.
- Relying on a local exception: The default 30-day local entry is temporary and does not provide consistent organization-wide behavior.
- Skipping the restart: A managed site-list policy requires an Edge restart before the new behavior takes effect.
- Ignoring certificate names: The public name users enter must match the certificate name used by the RD Web and web-client deployment.
- Changing browser settings instead of server settings: Web SSO depends on form-based RD Web authentication, password-based RD Gateway authentication, and the Gateway credential option.
- Over-scoping IE mode: Put only the required legacy site or path in compatibility mode where possible, and leave unrelated modern sites in normal Edge.
Choose the right compatibility path
The practical decision is not simply “Edge or Chrome.” Identify the client and the requirement first:
- Legacy portal feature tied to ActiveX: test and, if needed, manage that RD Web URL in Edge IE mode.
- Documented inbox-client Web SSO on Windows: use Edge IE mode and verify the server-side authentication and Gateway settings.
- Modern browser access through the HTML5 client: use Chrome or another supported modern browser after the administrator has deployed the client and configured its certificates.
These are different compatibility paths. Changing to a modern browser will not itself remove a legacy ActiveX dependency, and placing a legacy URL in IE mode will not by itself deploy the HTML5 client. Start with the URL and workflow, test the smallest required change, then move a successful test into centrally managed policy.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does RD Web work in Chrome?
Yes, when you mean the separately deployed HTML5 Remote Desktop web client and the deployment meets Microsoft’s requirements. Chrome is not an equivalent to Edge IE mode and should not be expected to run an ActiveX-dependent legacy RD Web Access page.
Can Chrome run Edge Internet Explorer mode?
No. Internet Explorer mode is a Microsoft Edge feature. A Chrome user must use the HTML5 Remote Desktop web client or another organization-approved modern-browser path.
Why is RD Web Access missing in Edge?
Determine whether the missing tab, control, or launch action belongs to a legacy portal that depends on ActiveX. Standard Edge does not support ActiveX, so test the exact site in Edge IE mode and then have IT manage the URL through the Enterprise Mode Site List if the test succeeds.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow do I open RD Web in IE mode?
If policy allows it, open edge://settings/defaultBrowser, enable Allow sites to be reloaded in Internet Explorer mode, open the RD Web address, and select Settings and more (…) > Reload in Internet Explorer mode. Local entries last 30 days by default.

What is the recommended organization-wide configuration?
Add the required RD Web URL to the Enterprise Mode Site List, set Open in to IE mode, configure the InternetExplorerIntegrationSiteList policy, and restart Edge so the policy takes effect.
Does every RD Web Access page need IE mode?
No. Microsoft’s older ActiveX guidance applies to a specific legacy feature path. Identify the actual client and failure first; the separate HTML5 client is designed for modern browsers.
What are the Web SSO prerequisites?
For the inbox Remote Desktop Connection client on Windows, Microsoft specifies Edge IE mode, RD Web form-based authentication, RD Gateway password authentication, and the setting Use RD Gateway credentials for remote computers. Other configurations are unsupported for this Web SSO scenario, and smart cards are not supported.
Why does the HTML5 client load but fail to connect?
Check the RD Gateway, RD Connection Broker, and RD Web Access deployment, the installation and publishing procedure, and the broker certificate import. If the broker certificate changed, update the web-client configuration and republish it. Also verify that the public certificate name matches the RD Web URL.
Can I use the local IE-mode setting permanently?
It is intended as a test or temporary bridge. A remembered local entry lasts 30 days by default. Microsoft’s managed approach is an Enterprise Mode Site List, which provides consistent behavior for the intended users and devices.
What should I do about a certificate warning?
Verify that the certificate is trusted and that the fully qualified server name users access matches the certificate name. For the HTML5 client, also verify the public certificate name and broker-certificate configuration. Do not tell users to ignore the warning.
The Bottom Line
First determine whether users need the legacy RD Web Access portal, inbox-client Web SSO, or the separate HTML5 Remote Desktop web client. Use Edge IE mode only for the documented legacy or Web SSO paths, test locally when necessary, and move a successful test into the centrally managed Enterprise Mode Site List. Use Chrome for the HTML5 client after its server, publishing, and certificate requirements are complete; Chrome cannot provide Edge’s IE mode.
