Playing with friends? Godlike.Host runs hosted 7 Days to Die servers from 10 data-center locations, with free DDoS protection.
Set the PlayerKillingMode property in your server’s serverconfig.xml, then restart the server. Use 0 for no player-versus-player damage, 1 for allies only, 2 for strangers only, or 3 for everyone, including allies. Managed hosts may expose the same setting as a PvP or friendly-fire toggle in their control panel.
What controls PvP friendly fire?
In a dedicated 7 Days to Die server, the current setting used by hosting guides is PlayerKillingMode in serverconfig.xml. A typical entry looks like this:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →<property name="PlayerKillingMode" value="3"/>
The number in the value attribute determines which players can damage one another. The practical range described by current host guides and a commonly quoted configuration comment is 0 through 3.
| Value | Who can damage whom | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
0 |
Nobody can damage another player. | Strict PvE or cooperative worlds. |
1 |
Damage is possible only between players who have added one another to their allies list. | Organized team combat, provided the alliance system is understood by every player. |
2 |
Players can damage people who are not their allies; allies are protected from one another. | Open-world conflict with protection for established teammates. |
3 |
Players can damage everyone, including allies. | Unrestricted PvP. |
These meanings are consistent across the host explanations from SparkedHost, Shockbyte and BisectHosting. One aggregated search result called 3 the default, but that result was not attributed and the default has not been independently verified. Do not assume your server starts at 3: inspect the actual file or panel value.

Before changing the setting
Confirm that you administer the dedicated server
You need access to either the server’s configuration files or its hosting control panel. A normal game client cannot change the dedicated server’s PvP policy for everyone. If another person owns the server, ask that administrator to make the change and schedule the restart.
Identify the active configuration
Hosts can place the file in different directories, and some panels generate a configuration file when the server is created. Open the configuration associated with the instance you actually run, not an old backup or a template. If you operate more than one world or instance, check each instance separately.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Schedule a short outage
Stop the server before editing. A running process can overwrite your change when it shuts down, and players may remain connected while the old policy is still active. Tell players when the server will be unavailable, make the edit, and restart it after saving.
Make a backup
Download or copy serverconfig.xml before editing. Keep the original filename and contents somewhere outside the live configuration directory. If another setting is accidentally removed or the server refuses to start, restoring this copy gives you a known-good baseline.
Check the game build and host documentation
No official 7 Days to Die documentation for this property was located in the material available for this guide, and behavior on the current 2026 game build has not been independently verified. Host guides are therefore the practical reference, not a guarantee that every release or hosting panel behaves identically. If your provider documents a different current property or warns that the option is unavailable, follow that provider’s instructions.

Configure PvP by editing serverconfig.xml
- Stop the server. Use the hosting panel’s Stop button, the service manager you normally use, or your server administrator’s shutdown procedure. Wait until the panel reports that the process has stopped.
- Open the live configuration file. In a file manager, FTP/SFTP client or server console, locate
serverconfig.xmlfor the running instance. Some panels provide an “XML Config,” “Configuration Files” or similar editor rather than exposing the filesystem. - Find the property. Search for
PlayerKillingMode. The complete line should have the form<property name="PlayerKillingMode" value="number"/>. - Replace only the value. Keep the property name, quotation marks, slash and XML structure intact. Change the number to
0,1,2or3according to the behavior you want. For example, a no-PvP server uses<property name="PlayerKillingMode" value="0"/>. - Save the file. Confirm that the editor saved the file as plain text with the same
.xmlextension. Do not save a second copy such asserverconfig.xml.txt. - Restart the server. Start the instance and wait until it is fully online. The setting is read during startup; changing the file while the process is running does not reliably apply the new policy.
- Test with two players. Use a controlled test area and two consenting accounts. Test the exact relationship that matters to you: allies for mode 1, non-allies for mode 2, and both allies and non-allies for mode 3. Stop immediately if the result is not what your community agreed to.
Do not add multiple copies of the property. If the file already contains one PlayerKillingMode entry, edit that entry rather than appending another one. Duplicate XML properties can produce ambiguous results, with the game or host panel choosing one value unpredictably.
If the property is missing
Reports from server administrators are inconsistent. One Steam discussion said the setting belongs in the multiplayer section and that manually adding it solved the problem; another person reported that adding it manually did nothing. That difference can reflect a game-version change, a panel-generated configuration, an incorrect file, or a server that never reloaded the file.
First search the entire active file, not only the multiplayer section. If the property is absent, compare the file with the configuration template supplied by your host and check whether the host has a separate settings editor. Add the property manually only when your game version or provider confirms that it is supported. Place it alongside the other <property> entries, preserve the exact capitalization shown above, save, and restart.
If a manually added line has no effect, remove it only after making a backup, then ask the host which configuration file is authoritative for your instance. A panel may regenerate serverconfig.xml from its own settings, or the server may be launching with a command-line path pointing to a different file.
Use a hosting control panel instead
Managed hosting panels may present PvP and friendly-fire controls as switches in a settings tab. Wabbanode, for example, is described as offering separate PvP and friendly-fire toggles. The exact labels and whether the panel exposes all four modes vary by provider; there is no evidence that every host offers the same controls.

- Stop the instance if the panel requires it. Some panels allow editing while stopped only, while others queue the change for the next start.
- Open the server settings tab and look for PvP, player killing, or friendly-fire controls.
- Choose the desired mode. If the panel offers only a binary friendly-fire switch, it may not expose the allies-only and strangers-only modes. Use the XML editor or request confirmation from the host before assuming the switch maps to a particular numeric value.
- Save or apply the setting. Watch for a confirmation message and allow the panel to finish writing the configuration.
- Restart the server if it does not restart automatically.
- Verify the generated file. When the panel provides file access, confirm that the resulting entry is
PlayerKillingModewith the value you selected. This catches panels that use a different option or silently retain an old value.
A panel toggle and a manual edit can overwrite one another. Pick one administration method, make the change there, and check the final file after the server starts. If the panel resets the value, use the panel as the source of truth rather than repeatedly editing a generated file.
Choose the right mode for your server
Mode 0: no player damage
Set PlayerKillingMode to 0 when players must not hurt one another at all. This is the clearest choice for a cooperative PvE community, a family server, or a world where accidental attacks would be disruptive. It removes the need to coordinate alliance lists for basic protection.
Mode 0 concerns player-versus-player damage. It does not, by itself, describe every other source of damage in the game, such as zombies, environmental hazards or server rules unrelated to player attacks.
Mode 1: allies only
Set the value to 1 when attacks are intended to work only among players who have added one another to their allies list. The host description does not establish whether the relationship must be mutual, how invitations are accepted, or how the game handles a player who removes an ally. Explain those alliance rules to players and test them before opening the server.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThis mode is easy to misunderstand: it is not “allies are protected.” It is the opposite interaction described by the guides—damage is permitted between allies, while players outside that relationship cannot damage one another.

Mode 2: strangers only
Set the value to 2 when players should be able to fight people outside their ally relationship but should not hurt their own allies. This is the usual choice for faction or team servers that want conflict without routine friendly fire inside a group.
Because the protection depends on the alliance system, a player who is not correctly recognized as an ally can still be treated as a stranger. Test both sides of the relationship after changing the setting.
Mode 3: everyone
Set the value to 3 when every player can damage every other player, including allies. This is unrestricted PvP and allows accidental or deliberate friendly fire. Warn players before enabling it and test with consenting participants.
Testing and verification checklist
- Confirm the server was stopped before the edit and restarted afterward.
- Reopen the live configuration and verify that the saved value is the one you intended.
- Use two accounts or players in a safe, agreed test location.
- For mode 0, verify that neither player can damage the other.
- For mode 1, test an ally pair and a non-ally pair; only the ally interaction should permit damage according to the host descriptions.
- For mode 2, test an ally pair and a non-ally pair; the non-ally interaction should be the one that permits damage.
- For mode 3, test both an ally pair and a non-ally pair.
- Record the tested value and date in your administrator notes so future moderators know which policy is intentional.
If the observed result contradicts the table, do not announce the mode based only on the file value. Keep the server stopped or temporarily restrict access, capture the configuration and server version, and ask the host to identify the active property and alliance behavior.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshoot a setting that does not work
The server ignores the new value
- Check that you edited the file used by the running instance, especially if several worlds or server installations exist.
- Confirm the server actually restarted after the save; disconnecting and reconnecting to the game is not the same as restarting the dedicated process.
- Look for a panel setting that rewrites the XML at startup. If it does, change the value in that panel.
- Check capitalization and spelling: the current property name is
PlayerKillingMode, not a variation of it. - Restore the backup if the XML was damaged, then make one minimal change and restart again.
The line is present but the panel changes it back
The panel is probably generating the file from its own stored settings. Set the option in the panel, apply it, restart, and inspect the resulting value. Contact the provider if the panel offers only a binary toggle but your community needs one of the four numeric modes.

- 【Reduce Safety Risks】Cable tray under desk keeps all plugs away from your kids, no more worry about tripping. Using 2 holes wire tray saves extra space, helps you easily cabling and wire protection. The mesh design is not easy to accumulate dust, but avoids safety accidents caused by messy wires.
Players still damage allies in mode 2
Verify that the players are allies according to the game’s actual alliance state, not merely members of the same voice channel, clan name or external community. The available host material does not document the alliance mechanics, so an alliance may need to be created or accepted in game before the protection applies. Test with a newly established alliance and a player who is definitely outside it.
No one can damage anyone in mode 1
Mode 1 is not a general PvE setting; it is described as allowing damage between allies. Check that both players have the required ally relationship and that the server has loaded the new value. If the relationship is correct and the result remains different, the behavior may depend on your game build or host implementation.
You found a FriendlyFire property
Older player discussions refer to a FriendlyFire property set to false, sometimes describing it as a simple on/off switch that worked only for players on each other’s friends list. Current host guides use PlayerKillingMode instead. Treat FriendlyFire as a legacy setting: do not substitute it for the current property unless documentation for your exact server version explicitly requires it. Having both properties in the file can make diagnosis harder, so keep a backup and ask the provider which one is supported.
Operational advice for administrators
Announce policy changes
Changing the value changes the social rules of the world, not just a technical option. Publish the mode, the time of the restart and whether the change is permanent. For modes 1 and 2, explain what your community considers an ally and how players should establish that relationship.
Keep a change record
Note the previous value, new value, date, server version and administrator who made the change. This makes it possible to distinguish a configuration change from a game update or an alliance-state problem.
Protect the configuration
Restrict write access to trusted administrators and retain a known-good backup. A malformed XML file or an accidental change to another property can prevent startup even when the PvP value is correct.

Quick reference
| Goal | Configuration line | Restart required |
|---|---|---|
| Disable all PvP damage | <property name="PlayerKillingMode" value="0"/> |
Yes |
| Allow damage between allies only | <property name="PlayerKillingMode" value="1"/> |
Yes |
| Allow damage against strangers, but protect allies | <property name="PlayerKillingMode" value="2"/> |
Yes |
| Allow damage against everyone | <property name="PlayerKillingMode" value="3"/> |
Yes |
The reliable procedure is therefore: stop the server, set PlayerKillingMode to the value matching your policy, save the active serverconfig.xml (or the equivalent panel option), restart, and verify the result with the relevant ally and non-ally tests.
