On a dedicated Vintage Story server, playstyle is controlled by the PlayStyle entry inside the WorldConfig block of data/serverconfig.json. Choose one of the five supported values, back up the current save, remove the existing data/Saves/ folder, and restart the server so it generates a new world with that playstyle. Editing the value without generating a new world will not change the active save.
What the playstyle setting controls
Playstyle is a world-generation choice, not a per-player preference. The server reads the value when it creates a world and uses the selected preset to establish the survival, exploration, lore, combat, and building rules for that world. The setting is stored in the server’s JSON configuration at data/serverconfig.json, under WorldConfig.
A typical hosting panel exposes the file at /home/container/data/serverconfig.json, although the exact root directory depends on how your server was installed. The important part is the path relative to the server data directory: data/serverconfig.json.
Because the value is consumed during world creation, changing it on a server that already has a save does not retrofit the existing terrain or rules. The reliable procedure is to stop the server, back up the save, edit the value, remove the save folder, and start the server to generate a replacement world.

Available playstyle values
Vintage Story provides five preset values. The configuration uses lowercase strings without spaces. The official Game Playstyles material lists these five modes; the display name “Standard” is associated with the default surviveandbuild value by matching the wiki’s description of the standard balance to the configuration default. Treat that name-to-value pairing as an interpretation of the two descriptions rather than as a single explicitly stated mapping.

Published official material does not establish a complete per-preset table of starting health, temporal mechanics, or every individual rule. Do not rely on unofficial lists of exact numeric settings as though they were authoritative. Use the preset descriptions above to choose a mode, then test the generated world with your intended player group.

Before you edit the server
- Have server file access. You need the panel’s file manager, SFTP, or another method that can open
data/serverconfig.jsonand managedata/Saves/. - Schedule downtime. The server must be stopped before editing and before removing the save. Waiting for the process to show as offline prevents a final write from replacing your backup.
- Back up the complete save. Copy the existing
data/Saves/folder to a location outside the live server directory. If the folder contains more than one world, preserve the whole folder so you can restore any of them. - Tell players that this is a world reset. A new playstyle means a newly generated world. Existing builds, inventories, map exploration, and other progress belong to the old save and will not appear in the replacement world unless you roll back.
- Record the old configuration. Keep a copy of the original
serverconfig.jsontogether with the save backup. It gives you a clean rollback point if the new preset is unsuitable.
Step-by-step: change playstyle and generate a new world
- Stop the server. Use the hosting panel’s Stop control or the normal server shutdown procedure. Do not edit the file while the server is still running.
- Back up the save directory. In the file manager, copy or download
data/Saves/and store it outside the live data directory. Give the backup a date and a label such as “before-exploration-reset” so you can identify it later. - Open the server configuration. Browse to
data/serverconfig.json. On panels that expose an absolute container path, this is commonly shown as/home/container/data/serverconfig.json. - Locate the world configuration block. Find
WorldConfig, then find itsPlayStyleentry. Edit only the value, preserving the key name, capitalization, quotation marks, commas, and surrounding braces. - Enter one valid value. Replace the old string with exactly one of
surviveandbuild,exploration,homosapiens,wildernesssurvival, orcreativebuilding. For example, to create an Exploration world, the setting should read conceptually asWorldConfig → PlayStyle = exploration. - Save the file and check the JSON. Keep the file as JSON rather than rich text. A missing comma, an extra comma, or an unmatched quote can make the configuration unreadable. If your editor offers JSON validation, run it before closing the file.
- Remove the live save only after the backup is complete. Delete the server’s
data/Saves/folder through the panel’s file manager. This is the step that forces world generation; changing the configuration alone leaves the existing world in place. - Start the server. The server should create a fresh
data/Saves/directory and generate a world using the new playstyle. Allow startup to finish before connecting. - Verify the result in game. Join with a test account or ask an administrator to check the new world’s defining behavior: a flat Creative Building world, the reduced pressure of Exploration, the absence of traders and ancient ruins in Homo Sapiens, or the harder Wilderness Survival experience. Verification is especially important when several configuration files or save folders are present.
Choosing the right preset
surviveandbuild: the default starting point
Use surviveandbuild when your group wants the ordinary mixture of survival, exploration, and construction. It is the default value, so it is also the setting you will restore when you want the standard balance after testing another preset.

exploration: a gentler introduction
Exploration is designed for players who want to travel and discover the world with less combat and survival pressure. The Getting Started guidance specifically recommends it for absolute beginners because the default difficulty may be unforgiving for a first session. It is a practical choice for a mixed group that includes new players or for a temporary learning world.
homosapiens: remove mystical lore
Homo Sapiens is the choice when the group wants a setting without the game’s mystical lore features. The documented changes include no traders and no ancient ruins. Select it before generation; removing those features from an already generated world is not supported by simply editing the JSON.
wildernesssurvival: increase pressure
Wilderness Survival is aimed at players who want harder combat and survival. A community-written draft describes a random new-player respawn location within 5,000 blocks after death. Because that number comes from a user draft rather than an official specification, treat it as an indication of the community description, not a guaranteed contract for every server version.

creativebuilding: start in a flat creative world
Creative Building creates a flat building environment and enables Creative Mode from the start. It is suited to construction projects, demonstrations, and design sessions rather than a progression-focused survival campaign. Anyone joining this world should understand that its terrain and permissions differ from the survival presets.
Why an existing world does not change
The configuration value is read as part of world generation. Once the server has a save, that world already has its generated terrain and playstyle-related setup. Restarting with a different PlayStyle value does not rebuild the save, so players may see no difference at all.
Deleting data/Saves/ is therefore not an optional cleanup step; it is what causes the server to create a world under the new preset. It also means the old world is no longer available to players unless you restore the backup. Keep the backup until everyone has confirmed that the new world is wanted and that no required progress was left behind.

Safe rollback procedure
If the new preset is unsuitable, stop the server before restoring anything. Remove the newly generated save only after preserving it if you might need to inspect it, then put the backed-up data/Saves/ folder back in its original location and restore the previous serverconfig.json. Start the server and confirm that the old world loads. A rollback returns you to the earlier world; it does not merge progress between the two saves.
Troubleshooting common failures
The server starts in the old playstyle
The usual cause is that the old save was never removed. Stop the server, confirm that the backup exists, delete the live data/Saves/ folder, and start again. Also verify that you edited the configuration file belonging to this server instance rather than a similarly named file in another directory.
The server will not start after the edit
Inspect the JSON for malformed punctuation or a misspelled value. The key must remain PlayStyle inside WorldConfig, and the value must be one of the five exact lowercase strings. Restore the backed-up configuration if you cannot identify the error, then make one controlled edit and validate the file before restarting.

The value keeps reverting
Make sure the server was stopped before saving the file. An active process or a hosting panel’s configuration generator may write its own copy during shutdown or startup. Stop the instance, edit the file shown in the panel’s actual data path, save it, and then start once.
Players report that their builds disappeared
This is expected when the old save was replaced by a newly generated world. Stop the server and restore the backed-up data/Saves/ folder if preserving those builds is more important than changing playstyle. Do not delete the backup while investigating.
Only some players see the expected behavior
Check that everyone is connecting to the same server instance and world. Multiple save folders, test instances, or cached connection entries can make a player appear to be in a different world. Confirm the active server’s data path and inspect the newly generated save after a clean restart.
