Enable OCSP stapling in the TLS server, then verify the live handshake. Apache needs both SSLUseStapling On and a mandatory shared cache such as SSLStaplingCache shmcb:/var/run/ocsp(32768). Nginx needs ssl_stapling on;, a DNS resolver, and trusted issuer, root, and intermediate certificates through ssl_trusted_certificate.
A syntactically valid configuration is not proof that a response is being stapled. The certificate must advertise an OCSP responder in its Authority Information Access (AIA) extension, the server must resolve and reach that responder, the chain must be complete, and the cache or trust store must be usable. Confirm delivery with an OpenSSL handshake test after a graceful reload.
What OCSP stapling does
Online Certificate Status Protocol (OCSP) lets a client ask a certificate authority whether a TLS certificate is revoked. Without stapling, a browser or other client may have to contact the authority during connection setup. With stapling, the web server periodically obtains a signed OCSP response and sends that response in the TLS handshake. The client can validate the response without making its own status request.
Stapling therefore has two separate parts: obtaining and caching a response on the server, and presenting that cached response to clients. A server can have stapling directives enabled yet send nothing if the responder cannot be resolved, the outbound request fails, the certificate chain is incomplete, or the cache has not been populated.

Before changing configuration
Check the certificate and responder URL
Inspect the deployed certificate’s Authority Information Access extension and record its OCSP URL. Certificate authorities can change responder endpoints and operating behavior, so use the URL in the certificate currently installed on the server rather than assuming that a previous certificate used the same endpoint.
Confirm the server can reach the responder
The web server needs DNS resolution for the responder hostname and outbound HTTP access to that host. Test from the server itself, using the same network policy, firewall rules, proxy requirements, and resolver behavior that the service will use. A browser test from another machine does not establish that the web server can fetch a response.

Keep the leaf certificate and required intermediate certificates available. Apache and Nginx use the issuer information when obtaining or validating a response, and clients need the intermediate certificates during their own TLS validation. Nginx additionally needs a trusted file containing the issuer, root, and all required intermediates when stapling verification is enabled.
Identify configuration scope
Stapling is normally enabled in global SSL settings or an http context, then inherited by virtual hosts or servers. Make sure the setting is applied to the endpoint that actually serves the certificate. A different virtual host selected by SNI can make a correct-looking change appear ineffective.
Configure OCSP stapling in Apache
1. Enable stapling and create the mandatory cache
Apache’s mod_ssl documentation is explicit: “Configuration of a cache is mandatory for OCSP stapling.” Add both directives at global SSL configuration scope:

SSLUseStapling On
SSLStaplingCache shmcb:/var/run/ocsp(32768)SSLUseStapling On permits mod_ssl to obtain and attach responses. SSLStaplingCache defines the shared-memory cache that stores responses between handshakes and worker processes. The number in parentheses is the cache size in bytes for the shared-memory segment; the example uses 32,768 bytes.

Source builds, Debian- and Ubuntu-family packages, Red Hat-family packages, and other layouts place global SSL directives in different files and may use different runtime directories. Put the directives in the global SSL configuration file used by your installed package, and choose a writable, persistent runtime location appropriate for that operating system. Do not copy /var/run/ocsp blindly if your service account or filesystem layout differs.
2. Keep host-specific exceptions deliberate
A virtual host inherits the global setting unless you override it. To disable stapling for one host, Apache documents a host-level override:

</VirtualHost>Use an override only when that endpoint has a reason not to staple. Turning stapling off in one virtual host does not repair a cache, chain, DNS, or responder problem affecting other hosts.
3. Review responder and cache controls when necessary
mod_ssl exposes controls for responder timeout, normal and error cache lifetimes, maximum response age, clock skew, and responder-error handling. Defaults and directive availability vary with the installed Apache and OpenSSL versions. Change these values only when your certificate authority’s response lifetime, network latency, or operational policy requires it; otherwise, start with the documented defaults and observe the logs.

4. Validate and reload gracefully
- Run the configuration check appropriate to the installation, for example
apachectl configtest. Resolve every syntax or module error before reloading. - Perform a graceful reload so existing connections can finish while new workers read the SSL settings. Package-managed systems commonly expose this as
systemctl reload apache2orsystemctl reload httpd; use the service name installed on your host. - Allow time for mod_ssl to contact the responder and initialize the shared cache. The first handshake can occur before a usable response is cached, especially immediately after a restart.
If the cache cannot be created, Apache may log an error and no response will be stapled even though SSLUseStapling On is present. Check directory permissions, the runtime directory’s existence after reboot, and the web server error log.
Configure OCSP stapling in Nginx
1. Enable stapling and provide a resolver
In the relevant http or server context, enable stapling and configure DNS resolution:

resolver 1.1.1.1 1.0.0.1 valid=300s;Nginx states that a resolver should be specified to resolve the OCSP responder hostname. The example uses two DNS servers and asks Nginx to cache DNS answers for 300 seconds. Replace them when your environment requires internal resolvers, split-horizon DNS, or a controlled egress path. A resolver configured only on an administrator’s workstation does not help Nginx; resolution must work from the server process.
2. Configure trusted certificates for verification
Enable response verification and point Nginx at a trust file containing the certificate chain needed to validate the response:

ssl_trusted_certificate /etc/nginx/tls/ca-chain.pem;For verification to work, Nginx’s module documentation requires the server certificate issuer, the root certificate, and all intermediate certificates to be configured as trusted with ssl_trusted_certificate. The file is a trust store for verification; it is not necessarily the same file you present to clients. Build it from the correct certificates for the deployed leaf certificate, preserve PEM formatting, and confirm that the Nginx worker can read it.

3. Serve the leaf and intermediates to clients
The file named by ssl_certificate should contain the server certificate followed by the intermediate certificates needed by clients. A private key is configured separately with ssl_certificate_key. Supplying only the leaf can produce client validation failures even when stapling itself is working.

4. Use a pre-fetched response only when required
Nginx can staple a response from a file instead of fetching it dynamically with ssl_stapling_file. The module expects DER output produced by the openssl ocsp command. This mode adds an operational task: obtain a fresh response before the old one expires, install it where Nginx can read it, and reload or otherwise apply the change according to your deployment process. If you do not have that automation, dynamic stapling with a working resolver is simpler.

5. Test and reload
- Run
nginx -tand correct every reported error, including unreadable certificate or trust files. - Reload gracefully with the service manager used by your installation, commonly
systemctl reload nginx. - Watch the Nginx error log while making a test connection. DNS failures, trust-chain failures, and responder timeouts are usually reported there.
Verify what the public endpoint actually sends
Configuration tests check syntax and file access; they do not prove that a client receives a stapled response. Test the endpoint selected by the intended hostname and SNI:
openssl s_client -connect example.com:443 -servername example.com -statusIn the output, look for an OCSP response section. A successful response normally includes an “OCSP Response Status” indicating success and response data associated with the certificate. If the output says that no response was sent, continue with the troubleshooting checks below. Test from outside the server’s private network when possible, because a local proxy or alternate virtual host can hide a public-chain problem.

Repeat the test after certificate renewal, server restart, DNS changes, and firewall changes. A response observed before renewal belongs to the old certificate and says nothing about the new certificate’s AIA URL or issuer chain.

The implementation difference that most often surprises administrators is Apache’s mandatory cache. In Nginx, the settings that are easiest to overlook are the explicit resolver and the trust store required when verification is enabled.

Renew certificates as a chain, not just a leaf
Certificate renewal can change the issuer, intermediate, and OCSP URL together. Treat the leaf certificate, client-facing chain, Nginx trust file, and any Apache-related issuer configuration as one deployable unit. Run the live handshake test against the renewed certificate before declaring the rollout complete.
Account for restarts and cache lifetime
Apache’s shared cache is runtime state. A reboot, cache-directory cleanup, or worker restart can remove a previously fetched response. Plan for the period in which a new response is fetched, and monitor logs rather than assuming that a restart preserves the old cache.
Keep clocks and network policy correct
OCSP responses carry validity times. Large clock errors, excessive response age, or responder timeouts can make a response unusable. Ensure system time is synchronized and that firewall policy permits the DNS and HTTP traffic needed by the configured responder.
Recheck after software upgrades
Directive availability, defaults, and OpenSSL integration depend on the installed Apache or Nginx and OpenSSL versions. Before changing timeout, age, skew, or responder-error controls, consult the documentation shipped for those versions. A configuration copied from another host may use directives or defaults that do not exist in your build.
Deployment checklist
- The active certificate’s AIA extension contains a reachable OCSP responder URL.
- Apache has both
SSLUseStapling Onand a validSSLStaplingCache, or Nginx hasssl_stapling on;and a workingresolver. - Nginx’s

- DNS and outbound HTTP access work from the web server host.
- Configuration validation succeeds before a graceful reload.
- An external OpenSSL handshake test shows a current stapled response for every SNI hostname.
- Error logs are clear of cache, resolver, trust, timeout, and responder errors.
Once these checks pass, OCSP stapling is being delivered by the endpoint rather than merely enabled in a configuration file. Keep the same verification step in certificate-renewal and server-change procedures, because stapling depends on the current certificate, chain, responder, network path, and cache state.
