Use NGINX as the public-facing web server and Apache as the private upstream application server. NGINX listens on ports 80 and 443, selects the correct virtual host with server_name, and forwards matching requests from a location block with proxy_pass. Apache listens on a loopback or private-network address such as 127.0.0.1:8080, processes the request, and returns the response through NGINX.
This arrangement gives you one controlled internet entry point while preserving Apache compatibility for applications that already depend on its modules, virtual-host layout, or per-directory configuration. The details that most often determine whether it works correctly are the Apache listener, the URI form used with proxy_pass, forwarded headers, TLS and redirect handling, buffering, and upgraded connections such as WebSockets.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUnderstand the NGINX-to-Apache request path
The normal topology is:
Client → NGINX :80/:443 → Apache 127.0.0.1:8080
NGINX is the edge server. It accepts the client connection, chooses a server block by listening address, port, and hostname, then evaluates the matching location. A reverse-proxy location sends the request to Apache, receives Apache’s response, and sends that response back to the client.
Apache is the backend. It should listen on the address and port NGINX uses as its upstream. If NGINX is intended to be the only public entry point, do not expose Apache’s backend listener through a public firewall rule or an additional public interface. A loopback listener is appropriate when both processes run on one machine; a private address is appropriate when Apache is on another host or network segment.

Keeping the roles separate also makes troubleshooting easier. A failed direct request from the NGINX host to Apache indicates a backend or network problem. A successful direct request but a failed public request points toward NGINX host matching, headers, URI mapping, TLS, or firewall configuration.
Decide the design before editing configuration
Several choices affect the configuration and the behavior applications see. Make them explicit rather than accepting defaults accidentally.
| Decision | Option A | Option B | What changes |
|---|---|---|---|
| TLS placement | Terminate TLS at NGINX and use HTTP to Apache on a trusted private path | Use HTTPS from NGINX to Apache as well | Option B provides encryption on the internal hop but requires Apache-side certificates and upstream TLS settings. |
| Backend exposure | Apache on loopback, such as 127.0.0.1:8080 |
Apache on a private network address | Loopback minimizes exposure on one host; a private address supports separate hosts and requires network controls. |
| URI mapping | Preserve the incoming request path | Replace a location prefix before Apache receives it | The presence and form of a URI suffix on proxy_pass determine which path Apache receives. |
| Response handling | Use NGINX’s default buffering | Tune buffering or disable it for streaming | Buffering can help slow clients, while streaming responses may need different behavior. |
| Application protocol | Ordinary HTTP requests | HTTP with upgraded connections, such as WebSockets | Upgraded protocols need additional proxy headers and a compatible HTTP version. |
Also decide which hostname is canonical and whether HTTP should redirect to HTTPS. These decisions must agree with Apache’s virtual hosts and with the application’s base URL.
Prepare Apache as the private backend
Bind Apache to the upstream address
Configure Apache’s listener or virtual host to accept connections on the address and port named in NGINX’s proxy_pass. For a same-host setup, 127.0.0.1:8080 is a common pattern. For a separate backend, use a private address and permit connections from the NGINX host or subnet only.
Do not point NGINX at a port where Apache is not actually listening. From the NGINX machine, verify that Apache answers on the private endpoint before testing the public hostname. The direct test should use a known URL and, when name-based virtual hosting is enabled, the public hostname in the request’s Host header.
Match Apache’s name-based virtual host
Apache may select a virtual host by the Host header. NGINX should therefore preserve the public hostname instead of allowing an internal hostname or an address literal to replace it. The NGINX configuration later in this guide sets Host $host explicitly.

Protect the backend listener
- Bind to loopback when NGINX and Apache share a host and no other machine needs direct access.
- When using a private network address, restrict inbound traffic to NGINX with host and network firewalls.
- Do not publish the Apache port in DNS or expose it as a second public route unless that is an intentional design.
- Configure Apache or the application to trust forwarded client information only from the NGINX address range.

proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-For $proxy_add_x_forwarded_for;
proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-Proto $scheme;
proxy_pass http://127.0.0.1:8080;
}
}
listen 80 makes this server block eligible for HTTP connections on port 80. server_name matches the requested hostname. location / covers the site’s URL space, and proxy_pass sends those requests to Apache.
The proxy headers are deliberate. NGINX changes some headers in proxied requests by default, including Host and Connection. Setting the headers that your backend needs avoids ambiguous virtual-host selection and preserves the information required for redirects, logging, and scheme-aware application logic.
Recommended Free Tools
Use a separate block when HTTP redirects to HTTPS
For a site whose canonical URL is HTTPS, use a port-80 block that redirects and a TLS-enabled block that proxies. The redirect block should return a redirect to the canonical HTTPS hostname rather than forwarding the request to Apache.
server {
listen 80;
server_name example.com www.example.com;
return 301 https://example.com$request_uri;
}
The TLS server block listens on 443, contains the certificate settings required by your NGINX package, and uses the same proxy headers and upstream pattern as the HTTP example. If the application later redirects HTTPS requests back to HTTP, the backend is usually not recognizing the original scheme. Ensure that NGINX sends X-Forwarded-Proto $scheme and that Apache or the application is configured to trust that header from your proxy.
Understand exactly what proxy_pass does
The most common path errors come from adding or removing a URI suffix unintentionally. With:
location / {
proxy_pass http://127.0.0.1:8080;
}
the upstream URL has no URI suffix. NGINX generally passes the original or normalized request URI to Apache. A request for /images/logo.png therefore reaches Apache with that path.
When a URI is included, NGINX replaces the part of the request that matched the location with that URI. These examples are not equivalent:
| Configuration | Request | Typical upstream path | Use when |
|---|---|---|---|
location /app/ { proxy_pass http://127.0.0.1:8080; } |
/app/login |
/app/login |
Apache should receive the original prefix. |
location /app/ { proxy_pass http://127.0.0.1:8080/; } |
/app/login |
/login |
The public /app/ prefix should be removed. |
location /app/ { proxy_pass http://127.0.0.1:8080/app/; } |
/app/login |
/app/login |
You want an explicit replacement prefix. |
Trailing slashes matter. Test a representative URL, a nested path, a query string, and a path ending in a slash after every mapping change. If Apache returns 404 responses only for a mounted subpath, inspect the upstream request path before changing application routes.

Forward hostname, client address, and original scheme
Preserve the public hostname
proxy_set_header Host $host; tells Apache which public host the client requested. This is important for Apache name-based virtual hosts, canonical redirects, cookie domains, and applications that build absolute URLs.
Preserve client-address information
X-Real-IP $remote_addr carries the address NGINX observed. X-Forwarded-For $proxy_add_x_forwarded_for appends that address to the forwarding chain instead of discarding an existing chain. Apache access logs and application frameworks must be configured according to their own proxy-trust rules before treating these values as authoritative.
Never allow arbitrary internet clients to supply trusted forwarding headers directly to an application. The trusted boundary should be the controlled NGINX-to-Apache path, and the application should trust only the proxy addresses you administer.
Tell the backend whether the client used HTTP or HTTPS
X-Forwarded-Proto $scheme records the scheme at NGINX. Applications use it to create secure links, enforce HTTPS, mark cookies, and avoid redirect loops. Forwarding the header is not sufficient by itself: Apache or the application must be configured to recognize it from NGINX and reject untrusted copies from other sources.
Choose where TLS terminates
TLS termination at NGINX
In the common arrangement, NGINX handles the public 443 connection and sends HTTP to Apache over loopback or a protected private network. This centralizes certificates and lets NGINX perform the public TLS handshake while Apache receives the original scheme through X-Forwarded-Proto.
This model is appropriate when the internal path is sufficiently trusted and your security or compliance requirements do not require encryption between the two servers. It does not make the internal hop public; firewall and listener restrictions still matter.
HTTPS from NGINX to Apache
NGINX can also proxy to an HTTPS upstream. Use this when internal traffic must be encrypted, when the backend crosses a network you do not fully trust, or when policy requires end-to-end TLS. Apache then needs a certificate configuration suitable for the upstream connection, and NGINX must be configured to connect to the correct HTTPS name and port.
The choice is architectural, not a universal performance or security rule. Document where certificates terminate, which hostnames are validated, and which addresses are allowed to reach Apache.

Handle redirects generated by Apache and applications
After the basic proxy works, inspect every redirect response rather than assuming it is correct. A response with a Location header pointing to http://127.0.0.1:8080, an internal hostname, or the wrong scheme indicates that the backend is constructing URLs from incomplete information.
- Confirm that NGINX sends the public
Hostvalue. - Confirm that
X-Forwarded-Protoreflects the client’s original scheme. - Check Apache’s virtual-host and canonical-name settings.
- Check the application’s configured base URL and proxy-trust settings.
- Verify that an HTTP-to-HTTPS redirect is defined in only the intended layer, avoiding a redirect loop.
Apache’s own reverse-proxy guidance uses ProxyPassReverse to rewrite backend Location headers when Apache is acting as a reverse proxy. In an NGINX-fronted design, NGINX is the reverse proxy, so the equivalent practical task is to ensure that backend redirects are based on the public host and scheme, and to add any NGINX redirect-rewrite settings only when inspection proves they are needed.
Buffering, large responses, and streaming
NGINX buffers proxied responses by default. Buffering allows NGINX to receive data from Apache at one pace and deliver it to a slower client at another pace, which can improve general throughput and protect the backend from slow readers.
Streaming endpoints, server-sent events, downloads that must begin immediately, and other latency-sensitive responses may behave poorly with default buffering. Measure the application’s behavior first; then consider proxy_buffering off or more targeted buffer settings in the relevant location. Do not disable buffering globally without understanding the memory, connection, and throughput trade-offs.
Test a small response and a large response separately. A page that loads normally does not prove that large downloads, long-lived responses, or slow-client scenarios are configured correctly.
Proxy WebSockets and other upgraded connections
WebSocket proxying is not covered by the minimal HTTP example. It requires a compatible HTTP version and explicit upgrade handling. A typical location uses settings like these, adjusted to your application:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →location /socket/ {
proxy_http_version 1.1;
proxy_set_header Upgrade $http_upgrade;
proxy_set_header Connection "upgrade";
proxy_set_header Host $host;
proxy_set_header X-Real-IP $remote_addr;
proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-For $proxy_add_x_forwarded_for;
proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-Proto $scheme;
proxy_pass http://127.0.0.1:8080;
}
Use the narrowest location that matches the upgraded endpoint, and verify that Apache and the application support the same protocol and timeout expectations. A normal page succeeding while the WebSocket handshake fails usually means the upgrade headers, HTTP version, location path, or idle timeout is incomplete.
Validate the configuration in a controlled order
- Test Apache directly. From the NGINX host, request a known URL on the private Apache listener. Include the public hostname when Apache uses name-based virtual hosts. Confirm the status code and response body.
- Check DNS and host matching. Ensure the public hostname resolves to the NGINX address and that the request’s hostname matches the intended
server_nameblock. - Run the package’s configuration test. Use the NGINX configuration-test command supplied by your operating system or package. A commonly installed command is
nginx -t, but confirm the command and configuration path for your distribution. - Reload NGINX safely. Use the service manager and reload procedure provided by your platform so existing connections are handled according to that system’s behavior.
- Request a known public URL. Check the status, response body, cookies, and timing through the public hostname rather than testing only by IP address.
- Inspect redirect headers. Verify that every
Locationvalue uses the intended public hostname, path, and scheme. - Check identity headers. Confirm that Apache logs the expected host and that application logs show the original client address according to your trusted-proxy configuration.
- Exercise different traffic types. Test static files, an application POST, a query string, a large response, a redirect, and each WebSocket or upgraded endpoint.
- Read both log streams together. Compare NGINX access and error logs with Apache logs for the same request time when investigating 4xx, 5xx, connection-reset, or timeout errors.
Troubleshoot by symptom
502 Bad Gateway or connection refused
- Apache is stopped or listening on a different port.
- The
proxy_passaddress is wrong, including an incorrect loopback address or private hostname. - A firewall blocks NGINX from reaching the private backend.
- Apache is bound only to an address different from the one NGINX uses.
Start with a direct request from the NGINX host. If that fails, fix Apache or network reachability before changing proxy headers.

404 responses only under a subpath
Compare the public URL with the path Apache receives. A URI suffix on proxy_pass, especially a trailing slash, may have removed or duplicated the location prefix. Choose whether Apache should receive the original path or a rewritten prefix, then test a nested URL and a trailing-slash variant.
Wrong site or wrong virtual host
Check the server_name selected by NGINX and the Host header sent upstream. An address-based test can select a default server instead of the intended hostname. Test with the real DNS name or explicitly supply the expected host during diagnostics.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Redirect loop or HTTP links after HTTPS
Inspect Location headers and the application-generated URLs. Confirm X-Forwarded-Proto $scheme, configure the framework to trust NGINX, and ensure the application’s canonical URL is HTTPS. Do not add another redirect rule until you know which layer is generating the incorrect redirect.
Logs show NGINX’s address instead of the visitor
Verify the X-Real-IP and X-Forwarded-For settings, then configure Apache or the application to trust those headers only from NGINX. A header is not reliable merely because it exists; the receiving software must apply its proxy-trust rules correctly.
WebSocket handshake fails while pages work
Check that the WebSocket location uses a compatible HTTP version and sends the Upgrade and Connection headers. Confirm that the location path maps to the endpoint Apache expects and that network or idle timeouts do not close the connection prematurely.
Streaming stalls or large downloads behave differently
Review buffering for the affected location. Default buffering may be correct for ordinary pages but unsuitable for streaming. Compare behavior with buffering enabled and with a narrowly scoped tuning change, while watching memory use and connection counts.

- Expose only NGINX’s intended public listeners; keep Apache on loopback or a restricted private network.
- Use a dedicated
server_nameand an explicit default-server policy so unknown hostnames do not reach an unintended site. - Keep forwarded-header trust limited to the NGINX-to-Apache path.
- Record which layer owns TLS redirects, canonical host redirects, and application URL generation.
- Apply buffering and upgraded-connection settings only where the workload requires them.
- Retain synchronized NGINX and Apache logs so one request can be followed across both services.
- After configuration changes, test normal pages, authenticated requests, POST requests, redirects, static assets, large responses, and upgraded endpoints.
Package-specific configuration-test and reload commands differ between operating systems and init systems. Use the commands documented for your installed NGINX package rather than assuming that a command from another distribution has the same paths or service behavior.
A practical decision framework
Choose the simplest design that satisfies your trust and protocol requirements:
- Use NGINX on the public address and Apache on loopback when both services share a host and the internal hop does not need separate encryption.
- Use a private Apache address when the backend is on another machine, and restrict that address to NGINX in network policy.
- Use an HTTPS upstream when internal encryption or compliance requirements justify the additional certificate and validation work.
- Leave
proxy_passwithout a URI suffix when Apache should see the original path; add a carefully tested suffix only when prefix replacement is intentional. - Retain default buffering for ordinary responses, and tune it only for measured streaming or large-response problems.
- Add upgrade handling only to locations that serve WebSockets or another upgraded protocol.
Once these choices are documented, the configuration becomes predictable: NGINX owns the public connection, Apache owns backend processing, and the headers and path mapping make the original request understandable to the application.
