To connect a Minecraft plugin to MySQL, create a database and a separate user, select MySQL (or the plugin’s MariaDB driver) in the plugin settings, enter the server address, port, database name and credentials, then restart the Minecraft server and read the startup log. The exact key names and file location differ between plugins, so the plugin’s current documentation is the final authority.
This guide applies to Paper and Spigot servers and covers the common pattern, hosted control panels, manual VPS setup, multi-server networks, secure credentials, and the errors that most often prevent a connection.
What you need before changing a plugin
Have these items ready before editing a file:
- Access to the Minecraft server files and permission to stop and start the server.
- Access to a MySQL- or MariaDB-compatible database, either from your game-hosting panel or on a VPS.
- The plugin’s documentation or a freshly generated configuration file. Do not assume every plugin uses
config.yml. - The database host name or IP address, TCP port, database name, username and password.
- For a remote database, firewall rules that allow the Minecraft host to reach the database host on the database port.
MySQL and MariaDB are separate database engines, although many Minecraft plugins support both through a selectable driver. A plugin that specifically asks for a MariaDB driver should not be configured with a guessed MySQL driver name.
Decide whether MySQL is the right storage method
One Paper or Spigot server
A single server often works perfectly with the plugin’s default flat-file storage, such as YAML or SQLite. MySQL adds a separate service, credentials and backup responsibility. Use it on one server when the plugin requires it, when its data set is large, or when you need database administration and reporting.

A BungeeCord or Velocity network
MySQL is most useful when several Minecraft servers must read and write the same data. A shared database can let compatible instances use common points, punishments, profiles or other plugin records. Every instance still needs a compatible plugin version and its own correctly configured connection. A database alone does not make unrelated plugins share data.
Hosted panel or self-managed database

Create a database and a dedicated user
Using a hosting panel
- Open the panel’s database section and choose MySQL or MariaDB.
- Create a new database with a name you can identify with this plugin.
- Create a new database user and generate a strong password.
- Attach that user to the database. Grant only the permissions the plugin needs; do not reuse the panel’s administrative account.
- Copy the panel’s host, port, database name, username and password exactly. Some panels prepend an account or server identifier to the database and user names.
Panels sometimes show localhost for a database that is actually on a separate internal host. Use the value supplied for the game server, not a value inferred from another installation.
Using SQL on a VPS
Log in to the database administrator account through a protected local session, then create an isolated database and account. Replace the example names with your own values:

FLUSH PRIVILEGES;If the Minecraft server and database run on the same machine, the account host may be localhost. If they are separate, use the Minecraft server’s IP address or another narrowly scoped host pattern supported by your database administrator. Avoid granting access from every address unless there is no safer alternative and a firewall provides equivalent restriction.
The exact privileges vary by plugin. A plugin that creates and alters its own tables may need table-definition privileges during installation or upgrades. After checking the plugin documentation, you can reduce permissions if the plugin supports a read/write account without schema-management rights.
Find the plugin’s actual configuration file and keys
Stop the server before making structural configuration changes, or use the plugin’s documented reload procedure if it explicitly supports one. Most plugins store settings under plugins/<PluginName>/ and commonly use config.yml, but that is not universal.

- General pattern:
plugins/<PluginName>/config.yml. - MySqlPlayerBridge: its database settings are in
plugins/MySqlPlayerBridge/mysql.yml, not the usualconfig.yml. - LiteBans: its settings include a driver choice of MariaDB plus address, database, username and password fields.
- PlayerPoints: use the plugin’s own configuration page on dev.bukkit.org as the key reference rather than copying a configuration from another plugin.
Search the generated file for terms such as storage, storage-method, database, driver or mysql. Do not add a new key with a plausible name if the file uses a different schema: unknown keys are usually ignored.
Change flat-file storage to MySQL
Make a backup of the plugin folder before editing. Preserve indentation and use the exact spelling and capitalization shown by the plugin. An illustrative configuration looks like this; the names are examples, not a universal schema:

password: "your_db_password"Some plugins use a nested mysql: section, separate fields for host and port, or a driver value such as MariaDB. Follow that plugin’s template exactly. If it asks for an address containing the port, include it in the same value, for example 127.0.0.1:3306. If it provides separate host and port keys, do not append the port to the host field as well.

Why quoting matters in YAML
Quote the host-and-port value and the password. YAML treats characters such as :, #, braces and some leading symbols specially. A password containing a colon, hash or leading punctuation can be parsed incorrectly when left bare. Quoting also prevents an all-numeric-looking value from being interpreted as another YAML type.

Do not put a space before or after a password unless that space is genuinely part of the password. Do not paste an encrypted or masked panel value if the panel has a separate “copy” control that reveals the actual credential.
Restart and verify the connection
- Save the file using UTF-8 text and confirm that the edited file is in the active server directory.
- Start or restart the Minecraft server. A full restart is safer than a plugin reload when the database driver is loaded during startup.
- Watch the console from the beginning of the boot process. Look for a successful connection, schema creation or migration message from the plugin.
- Test a real plugin action, such as creating a record or changing a setting, then stop and start the server again to confirm the data persists.
- If the plugin reports an error, record the first database-related message and its underlying cause. Later stack-trace lines are often consequences rather than the root problem.
A successful connection message only proves that the credentials and network path worked. It does not prove that the account has every permission needed for table creation or future upgrades, so perform the plugin action that writes data.

Configure a multi-server network safely
For BungeeCord or Velocity networks, decide which data should be global and which should remain per-server. Point only compatible plugin instances at the same database and use the plugin’s documented synchronization settings. Some plugins require an explicit network or shared-storage option in addition to MySQL.
- Use one database or schema per plugin unless the plugin documentation says otherwise.
- Use a consistent plugin version and configuration format on every server.
- Ensure every server can resolve the database host and reach its port.
- Do not let two different plugins write to the same tables merely because they both use MySQL.
- Plan for simultaneous writes; a database connection does not remove the need for the plugin to implement locking or conflict handling.
Keep proxy and backend servers on the same trusted network where possible. If the database is outside that network, use firewall allow-lists and encrypted transport when the database and plugin support it.

Security and operational practices
Protect the credential
- Use a dedicated account for each plugin or closely related deployment.
- Choose a long, random password and keep it out of public paste sites, screenshots and version-control repositories.
- Restrict the account’s allowed source host and the database port’s firewall access to the Minecraft server.
- Give the account only the privileges documented by the plugin. Administrative database accounts are unnecessary for normal operation.
- Rotate the password by updating the database account and the plugin configuration during a maintenance window.
Back up before migrations and upgrades
Back up both the plugin directory and the database before changing storage type, upgrading the plugin or changing its schema. A file backup alone does not protect records already stored in MySQL. Test that a backup can be restored to a separate database before relying on it.
Keep versions and settings aligned
Read the plugin’s current documentation whenever its configuration is regenerated. Key names, supported drivers and migration behavior can change between releases. Do not copy a configuration from an older server without comparing it with the newly generated template.

- Stop the server and copy the complete plugin directory.
- Export or otherwise back up the existing flat-file data.
- Create the MySQL database and least-privilege user.
- Check whether the plugin documents an import or migration command. If it does not, ask the plugin author before assuming that changing the storage setting will copy records.
- Enter the database values, quote the address and password, and change only the documented storage keys.
- Start the server and inspect the log for schema creation, migration or errors.
- Verify representative records in-game, stop and restart again, then confirm they remain available.
- Keep the old backup until the new database has been tested and included in your normal backup schedule.

- Database exists and its name is copied exactly.
- Dedicated user exists, has the required grants and is allowed from the Minecraft host.
- Host and port are correct for this server; remote addresses are not replaced with
localhostaccidentally. - Plugin storage mode is MySQL or the documented MariaDB option.
- Configuration file and key names match this plugin, including plugins that use
mysql.yml. - Host-and-port and password values are quoted in YAML.
- Server was fully restarted and the startup log was checked.
- A real write-and-restart test succeeded.
- Database and plugin-folder backups are scheduled and protected.
