Configure Mailgun in two stages: first verify a dedicated sending domain in Mailgun by publishing its SPF and DKIM records, then connect WordPress with the official Mailgun plugin over either the HTTP API or SMTP. API delivery uses outbound HTTPS and avoids blocked mail ports; SMTP uses domain-level credentials and is useful when a WordPress mailer is built around SMTP.
The reliable sequence is domain verification, plugin setup, sender alignment, and testing from the actual WordPress workflows that send mail. The steps below cover both transports, the exact SMTP settings, regional selection, and fixes for failed test messages.
What you need before starting
Have these items ready before changing WordPress settings:
- A Mailgun account with a sending domain added in the Mailgun control panel.
- Access to the DNS provider that hosts that domain’s records. You must be able to create the SPF and DKIM records Mailgun displays.
- Administrator access to the WordPress site and permission to install plugins.
- A decision about the Mailgun region used by your account: US or Europe. The same region must be selected in the WordPress integration.
- An address on the verified sending domain to use as WordPress’s From address, such as
wordpress@example.com.
For testing, the Mailgun WordPress plugin repository describes a free-account allowance of up to 200 emails per day. Treat that as a plan detail that can change, not as a permanent deliverability quota.

1. Verify a dedicated Mailgun sending domain
Do not configure WordPress first and hope verification catches up later. Mailgun requires the sending domain to pass its DNS checks before it is ready to send.
Add or select the domain
In Mailgun, add a domain intended for application mail. A subdomain such as mg.example.com keeps transactional mail separate from the main website domain, while a dedicated root domain can also be used when that matches your organization’s DNS and mailbox policy. Mailgun will show the exact DNS records for the domain you selected.
Publish the records Mailgun provides
Copy the SPF and DKIM values exactly as displayed in Mailgun’s domain panel into your DNS provider. Do not substitute a generic SPF record, change a DKIM selector, or add quotation marks that your DNS interface does not require. A single missing character can leave the domain unverified.
DNS interfaces use different labels for the same fields. Enter each Mailgun hostname in the DNS record’s Name, Host, or Record field, and place the supplied value in the Value or Target field. If your provider automatically appends the zone name, enter only the host portion it requests so you do not create a duplicated domain.

Wait for propagation and run verification
Save the records, allow DNS propagation time, then return to Mailgun and run the domain verification check. The domain is not ready merely because records were saved at the registrar; Mailgun must be able to resolve the published SPF and DKIM values. If verification still fails after propagation, compare every character with the values currently shown in the Mailgun panel, correct the DNS records, and trigger verification again.
Keep the verified domain and the eventual WordPress From address aligned. Using an unrelated From domain can cause a form plugin or mailbox provider to treat the message as unauthenticated or rewrite the sender.

- Sign in to WordPress as an administrator.
- Open Plugins → Add New, search for the official Mailgun WordPress plugin, install it, and activate it.
- Open Settings → Mailgun.
- Choose the Mailgun region that contains your account, either US or Europe.
- Choose a transport: HTTP API or SMTP.
- Enter the credentials and sending domain for the transport you selected, save the settings, and use the plugin’s test-configuration control.
The official integration supports both transports, so you can switch during troubleshooting without replacing the plugin. Select the region before testing; a valid key or credential used against the wrong regional endpoint can appear to be an authentication or connection problem.
3. Configure the HTTP API transport
The API path sends mail from WordPress over outbound HTTPS. It is usually the first choice when a hosting company blocks outbound SMTP ports or when you want the web server to use an HTTPS request rather than maintain an SMTP connection.

Enter the API settings
- In Settings → Mailgun, select HTTP API.
- Paste the Mailgun API key into the plugin’s API-key field. Copy it from the Mailgun control panel and do not include surrounding spaces.
- Enter the verified Mailgun sending domain exactly as it appears in Mailgun.
- Select US or Europe to match the account and domain’s Mailgun region.
- Save the configuration and run the plugin’s test configuration or test-email control.
A successful test confirms that the plugin can authenticate and submit a message through the selected API endpoint. It does not prove that every other WordPress plugin uses the same mail path or From header, so complete the workflow tests described below.
When the API test fails
Check first that the web server permits outbound HTTPS requests. Security modules, a restrictive firewall, or a hosting policy can block the request before it reaches Mailgun. Confirm the key has no accidental whitespace, the domain is verified, and the selected region is correct. WordPress debugging can reveal the HTTP error returned by the host or the plugin; enable it temporarily while reproducing the failure, then disable verbose output on a production site.

SMTP is appropriate when your WordPress mailer or hosting environment expects a conventional SMTP server. Mailgun’s official SMTP host is smtp.mailgun.org, and credentials are created for each sending domain.
Create or retrieve domain SMTP credentials
- In Mailgun, open Sending → Domain Settings → SMTP Credentials.
- Create a credential for the verified sending domain if one does not already exist, or copy the existing username and password.
- Use that domain’s credential in WordPress; do not mix credentials from another domain.
Do not assume that creating a domain through an API automatically created an SMTP login. In a May 9, 2025 announcement, Mailgun said SMTP credentials are no longer generated automatically by the Domains API. They must be created through the Credentials endpoint or through the Mailgun user interface.

Enter the WordPress SMTP values
Choose SMTP in the Mailgun plugin and enter the values below. The plugin’s field names can vary slightly by release, but the underlying values remain the same.

Mailgun’s SMTP documentation states: “Some ISPs are blocking or throttling certain SMTP ports. Using port 587 is recommended.” Start with port 587 and secure SMTP enabled. Use port 465 only when your host or mailer specifically requires implicit TLS. Ports 25 and 2525 are fallback options when permitted by the host, not an indication that port 587 is misconfigured.

Run the SMTP test
Save the settings and use the plugin’s test control. If the connection is refused or times out, confirm that the web host allows outbound traffic on the selected port. If the server accepts the connection but Mailgun rejects authentication, recreate or reset the domain credential and verify that the username and password were copied as a pair.
API or SMTP: which should you choose?
Both paths are supported by the official plugin. Choose based on the network and credential constraints of your WordPress host rather than on a presumed difference in message quality.

If your host blocks SMTP, API is the practical option. If outbound HTTPS is restricted but SMTP is allowed and your mailer is designed for it, SMTP may be easier. The plugin lets you change transports, so you can test the other path without changing your verified domain.

Set WordPress’s From address to an address on the verified Mailgun sending domain. For example, if Mailgun verifies mg.example.com, use an address such as wordpress@mg.example.com unless your Mailgun and WordPress setup explicitly verifies another domain.
Keep the sender identity the same for contact forms, password resets, administrator notifications, and other automated messages. Many WordPress plugins let an administrator override the global From header. A form that sends as a visitor’s address, or a password-reset plugin that uses a different domain, can bypass the identity you just configured. Set the form’s From address to your verified domain and place the visitor’s address in the Reply-To field when the plugin supports it.
After changing the global setting, inspect each high-value mail path individually. A successful Mailgun test only exercises the plugin’s test message, not necessarily every WordPress component.
6. Test delivery end to end
- Use the Mailgun plugin’s built-in test configuration control and record whether it reports a connection, authentication, or submission error.
- Send a message to a mailbox you can inspect. Check the recipient’s inbox and spam or junk folder.
- Submit a real contact form and confirm that the form notification arrives.
- Request a WordPress password reset in a separate browser or account and verify that message.
- Trigger an administrator notification, such as a new-user or comment alert, if your site uses one.
- Open Mailgun’s events or logs and look for the corresponding accepted, delivered, failed, or rejected event. Match the event time and recipient with the WordPress action.
Testing all three paths distinguishes a transport problem from a plugin-specific From-header or mail-function problem. If Mailgun records an accepted or delivered event but the recipient cannot find the message, investigate the recipient mailbox’s spam filtering and search by the exact recipient and subject. If no Mailgun event exists, the WordPress component likely did not submit the message through the configured integration.
Troubleshooting failed Mailgun WordPress tests
The HTTP API test cannot connect
- Confirm that the server allows outbound HTTPS requests; ask the host whether a firewall or security module blocks them.
- Check the API key for whitespace or truncation and paste it again.
- Verify that the sending domain passed Mailgun’s DNS checks and that the plugin region matches the account.
- Temporarily enable WordPress debugging, reproduce the test, and inspect the resulting HTTP error. Turn debugging output off after diagnosis.
The SMTP test times out or is refused
- Change to port
587with secure SMTP and STARTTLS enabled. - Ask the host whether outbound traffic on ports 587 and 465 is allowed. Some hosts block both; others throttle port 25.
- Do not switch to port 465 while leaving STARTTLS selected if the mailer expects implicit TLS; use the encryption mode that matches the port.
SMTP authentication fails
- Open Sending → Domain Settings → SMTP Credentials and confirm that the username and password belong to the selected sending domain.
- Create a credential if the domain was created through the Domains API after Mailgun stopped generating SMTP credentials automatically.
- Copy the credential again, save the WordPress settings, and retest. A valid API key is not an SMTP username or password.
Mailgun says the domain is not verified
- Compare the SPF and DKIM records in DNS with the current values in Mailgun’s domain panel, character for character.
- Check that the records were added to the intended domain and that your DNS provider did not append the zone name twice.
- Allow propagation, then trigger Mailgun’s verification check again.
The plugin test passes, but a form or reset email fails
- Inspect the failing plugin’s From address and change it to the verified sending domain.
- Check whether that plugin uses a separate SMTP library or API integration instead of WordPress’s normal mail path.
- Repeat the action while watching Mailgun events. No event means the message did not reach Mailgun; a failed event points to Mailgun’s response; a delivered event shifts the investigation to the recipient mailbox.
You need more detail from the SMTP path
Enable WordPress debugging and define the plugin’s MG_DEBUG_SMTP constant when the plugin’s SMTP path needs detailed diagnostics. Use the resulting log only long enough to identify the failure, because SMTP diagnostics can expose connection details. Disable the constant and remove sensitive logs after troubleshooting.
Operational checks after setup
- Keep the DNS records that Mailgun supplied in your change log so a later DNS migration does not remove them.
- Review Mailgun events when a critical notification is reported missing; the event status tells you whether WordPress submitted the message and whether Mailgun accepted or rejected it.
- Recheck the WordPress From address when installing a new form, membership, commerce, or security plugin. New plugins can override sender headers.
- Protect API keys and SMTP passwords as secrets. Store them in WordPress’s protected configuration or secret-management system where available, avoid publishing them in screenshots or support tickets, and replace a credential if it may have been exposed.
- Retest after changing the Mailgun region, DNS provider, hosting firewall, or transport. Those changes affect connection and verification independently.
A practical decision sequence
- If the domain is not verified, stop and fix SPF and DKIM first; neither API nor SMTP setup can compensate for a failed domain check.
- If the host blocks outbound SMTP or you cannot obtain a permitted SMTP port, use the HTTP API with the matching Mailgun region.
- If the WordPress mailer requires SMTP fields and the host permits port 587, use SMTP with a domain credential and STARTTLS.
- If one transport fails, test the other with the same verified domain. The result separates a network restriction from a DNS or sender-identity error.
- Once the plugin test succeeds, test a form, password reset, and administrator notification before considering the site configured.
There is no authoritative numeric inbox-placement guarantee for this setup. Mailgun can report submission and delivery events, but recipient filtering, sender content, mailbox policies, and the consistency of your From identity still influence where a message appears.
