Install LuckPerms in the folder that matches your server software, restart and confirm that it enabled, then build a small group hierarchy and grant permissions to groups rather than individual players. Add players with /lp user <player> parent add <group>; use parent set only when you intend to replace their existing parent groups.
The commands below follow the LuckPerms command model documented for current 5.5-era installations. Command details can change, so check /lp help on the version actually installed on your server before applying a large change.

LuckPerms is a permissions manager. It does not decide which commands exist: Minecraft and your other plugins provide permission nodes, while LuckPerms decides which players or groups receive those nodes. A node such as minecraft.command.ban comes from Minecraft; a node such as essentials.fly comes from the plugin that implements flight.
- Access to the server files and its console.
- A recent backup of the server folder, including LuckPerms data, before changing permissions.
- The LuckPerms build appropriate for your server software.
- A test account that is not your primary administrator account, so you can verify restrictions safely.
LuckPerms command syntax is treated as volatile. One current setup guide targets LuckPerms 5.5 or later, while the official wiki search results do not identify a specific release. Treat the examples here as a practical starting point and confirm them with the help output from your installed build.

Install LuckPerms in the correct server folder
Paper, Spigot and Bukkit
Download the LuckPerms plugin jar that matches your server platform and put it directly in the server’s /plugins directory. Do not put a plugin jar in a subfolder unless your server software explicitly supports that layout. Restart the server rather than relying on a hot-reload command; a clean restart lets LuckPerms create its data files and avoids stale plugin state.
Fabric, Forge and NeoForge
For these modded platforms, place the LuckPerms mod in the server’s /mods directory. Use the loader-specific build, then restart the server. A plugin build intended for Paper, Spigot or Bukkit is not interchangeable with a Fabric, Forge or NeoForge mod.
Verify that it enabled
- Stop the server cleanly if it is running.
- Copy the correct LuckPerms jar or mod into
/pluginsor/mods. - Start the server and watch the console for a LuckPerms enabled message.
- Only after that message appears, begin creating groups and assigning permissions.
If no enabled message appears, stop and resolve the installation or compatibility error first. Permission commands cannot work until LuckPerms has loaded successfully.
Give yourself LuckPerms administration access
A fresh installation does not automatically give anyone LuckPerms management access. Run the following from the server console, replacing the name with your account:
/lp user YourName permission set luckperms.* true
The console may accept the command without the leading slash; in an in-game chat command, keep the slash. The luckperms.* node gives access to LuckPerms itself, not necessarily every command supplied by every other plugin. Protect the account used for this step, and do not hand this node to ordinary staff.
Wildcards are convenient during initial setup but broad by design. A wildcard can include nodes added by a plugin you install later, so replace temporary wildcard access with a narrower administrative role when your server is ready.

Design a group structure before adding permissions
Groups are reusable bundles of permissions. Create groups that represent real responsibilities on your server instead of making a group for every rank name you might want someday. A small hierarchy is easier to audit and less likely to grant an unintended capability.

LuckPerms normally creates a default group during initialization. If it already exists, do not try to create a duplicate; create only the groups that are missing.
Create groups
For each missing group, run:
/lp creategroup member/lp creategroup vip/lp creategroup mod/lp creategroup admin
Group names are identifiers. Use a consistent lowercase convention with no spaces so that commands and automation remain predictable.

Weights establish priority when LuckPerms must choose between groups, such as determining a primary group or selecting metadata. Assign increasing values as your hierarchy becomes more privileged—for example, a lower value for default, a higher value for vip, and still higher values for mod and admin. The exact command is exposed by your installed version’s group help (commonly /lp group <group> setweight <number>). Do not treat a weight as a permission: it changes priority, not what a group can do.
Build inheritance with parent groups
Inheritance lets you grant a permission once at a lower level and have higher groups receive it automatically. For the example hierarchy, add parents from the more privileged group to the less privileged one:

/lp group member parent add default/lp group vip parent add member(or adddefaultdirectly if you did not createmember)./lp group mod parent add vipif moderators should receive VIP features./lp group admin parent add mod
parent add is additive. It keeps existing parent groups and adds the one named in the command. For example, /lp group admin parent add mod makes admin inherit the moderator group’s permissions without removing any other parent. The primary group is not changed by this command.
parent set has a different effect: it replaces the current parent selection with the group or groups specified. Use it when you are intentionally rebuilding a group’s inheritance, not as a safer spelling of parent add. If your configuration uses a primary-group-calculation mode other than stored, use the parent commands rather than a primary-group switching command.

Grant a node with:
/lp group <group> permission set <node> true
For example:
/lp group mod permission set minecraft.command.ban true
This gives the ban command to every member of mod and to groups that inherit mod. Put the node on the lowest group that should have it. That keeps the policy understandable and prevents a long list of one-off player exceptions.
Allow, deny and remove are different operations

Use false only when you need an intentional denial. If you merely want to stop maintaining a setting, use unset; leaving an old false value in place is a common reason a newly added rank still cannot use a command.
Be cautious with wildcards
A node of * can grant almost everything exposed through the permission system. It is fast for a tightly controlled administrator group but violates least privilege for moderators or normal players. The same caution applies to luckperms.*: it covers LuckPerms management nodes, including capabilities that may be added in future versions. Prefer explicit nodes for public and staff groups, and reserve wildcards for accounts you would trust with complete control.

Assign players to groups
Add a player while preserving their existing parent groups with:
/lp user PlayerName parent add vip
This is the normal choice when a player may belong to more than one group or when you want to keep an existing parent. To replace the player’s parent assignment instead, use:
/lp user PlayerName parent set vip
Because parent set replaces, it can remove access inherited from a previous group. Use it during a deliberate role change and record what the old assignment was so that you can restore it if necessary.
Keep players out of direct permission assignments wherever possible. A direct node may solve an emergency, but it hides policy in an individual record and makes later audits difficult. Put the node on a group, then make the player a member of that group.
Use the web editor for larger changes
The command line is precise and scriptable; the web editor is useful when you need to review many groups and nodes visually. Start an editor session for the complete configuration with:
/lp editor
To edit only one group, use:
/lp group <group> editor
LuckPerms returns a browser session link. Open it, review the group and inheritance changes, and use the editor’s save/apply controls to send the completed configuration back to the server. Treat the generated link as administrative access: do not post it in a public chat or ticket.

The editor does not change the underlying design rules. You still need to decide whether a node belongs on default, a staff group or a context-limited assignment, and you still need to distinguish additive inheritance from replacement.
Limit permissions with contexts
Contexts let one permission apply only in a particular environment, such as a world or server. A typical policy might allow flight in a creative world while leaving it disabled in a survival or PvP world, or permit WorldEdit only on a dedicated build server.

Use the context controls in the web editor when you want a visual view of the applicable world or server, or consult /lp help for the exact context command syntax in your release. Always test the permission while logged into the target world or server; a global grant can mask a context rule, and a context mismatch can look like a missing permission.
Add prefixes only after permissions work
Prefixes are metadata, not access control. Set one on a group with the meta command supported by your version, for example:
/lp group vip meta setprefix 100 "[VIP] "
The number is the metadata priority; use a consistent priority scheme when several groups can supply prefixes. A chat plugin must be configured to display the LuckPerms prefix, and some server setups also require Vault as the bridge between the permissions manager and chat formatting. If the prefix is stored but invisible, check the chat plugin’s format rather than adding more permission nodes.
A complete first-time setup sequence
The following sequence creates a conservative starter arrangement. Replace names and nodes with the features your server actually uses.
- Install the correct LuckPerms build in
/pluginsor/mods, restart, and confirm the enabled message. - From the console, grant your administrator account
luckperms.*temporarily. - Create any missing groups:
member,vip,modandadmin. - Set group weights using the syntax shown by your version’s
/lp help. - Add parents with
parent add, starting at the lowest group and moving upward. - Grant a small, explicit set of nodes to
defaultand the feature groups that need them. - Add your test account with
/lp user TestPlayer parent add vip. - Log in as the test account and check both allowed and disallowed actions.
- Assign staff with
parent addor deliberately replace a role withparent set. - Remove unnecessary wildcard access after the hierarchy has been verified.
Troubleshoot the most common failures
LuckPerms commands are unknown
Check the startup log for an enabled message and confirm that the file is in the folder required by your platform. A Paper server looking in /plugins will not load a Fabric mod placed there, and a modded server will not load a plugin build simply because the filename is present.
A player still cannot use a command
- Confirm the player is actually a member of the intended group.
- Check whether you used
parent setand unintentionally removed another parent. - Look for an explicit
falsenode on the player or an inherited group; remove it withunsetwhen it is no longer required. - Check for a world or server context that does not match where the player is testing.
- Verify the node spelling with the plugin that supplies the command. LuckPerms cannot grant a node that the command’s plugin does not recognize.
A prefix does not appear
Confirm that the prefix was set on the group the player actually inherits, then check that the chat plugin is configured to render LuckPerms metadata. Add Vault only if that chat integration requires it. A correctly stored prefix can remain invisible when the formatter ignores prefixes.
A wildcard gave too much access
Replace the wildcard with explicit nodes on the appropriate group. Review inherited groups as well as direct assignments; removing * from one group does not remove a second wildcard inherited from a parent.

Maintain a safe LuckPerms configuration
- Back up LuckPerms data before restructuring groups.
- Document what each group is allowed to do and why it inherits its parents.
- Use explicit nodes for ordinary players and moderators.
- Test promotion and demotion with a non-owner account after every major change.
- Review context-limited permissions in each affected world or server.
- Recheck command syntax after upgrading LuckPerms, Minecraft, or a permission-providing plugin.
- Keep administrative session links and console credentials private.
