Configure Vintage Story land claiming in two places: role limits are controlled by serverconfig.json in the roles section, while the server-wide on/off switch is the world setting allowLandClaiming. Stop the server before editing its files, change the relevant role keys, save, and restart. For an existing world, use the in-game /worldconfig and /role commands where available rather than assuming a serverconfig change will rewrite an already-created world.
Which setting controls each part of land claiming?
Vintage Story separates the permission to use land claiming from the limits assigned to each role. Treating these as separate controls prevents the most common configuration mistake: changing a role allowance when claiming is disabled globally, or changing the world toggle when the real problem is a role limit.

The 131,072 m³ allowance is arithmetic based on the documented four-chunk default: 4 × 32 × 32 × 32. It is not a published performance measurement or a guarantee that every release uses the same default.
Before changing a production server
Confirm the game version
The official World Configuration documentation was last verified for Vintage Story 1.21.6. A later release can change defaults, command names or when a setting is read. Keep the server’s version number beside you and use the current in-game help after an update.

Back up the configuration and world
Make a copy of serverconfig.json and a current world backup before changing limits. A backup lets you restore the previous values if a JSON edit is rejected or if a new limit produces unexpected claim behaviour. Stop the server first so that a running process cannot overwrite your edit when it shuts down.
Decide whether you need a global switch or role limits
- Use
allowLandClaimingwhen every player should either be allowed or prevented from claiming. - Use the role keys when claiming remains enabled but different roles need different volumes, minimum sizes or numbers of separate areas.
- Changing one role does not automatically change the limits of other roles.
Configure a hosted server through serverconfig.json
Hosting control panels generally expose the same role fields in a server-configuration tab. If your host provides that interface, use the labels matching the keys below. The file-based procedure is the common path when you need to inspect the complete configuration.
- Stop the server. Use the Stop button in the hosting control panel and wait until the process is fully stopped.
- Open the server files. Browse to
server_data, then openserverconfig.json. - Find the Roles section. Locate the role entries and the keys
LandClaimAllowance,LandClaimMinSizeandLandClaimMaxAreas. - Edit only the intended role values. Preserve the existing JSON punctuation, role names and capitalization. The key names are case-sensitive in practice, so do not replace them with shortened labels such as
claimAllowance. - Save the file. If the panel has a JSON validation warning, correct the syntax before starting the server. A missing comma or quotation mark can prevent the configuration from loading.
- Start the server. Wait for the startup process to complete, then join and test with a role that should have the changed limits.
The role limits belong in the roles section; they are not world-wide values. If the control panel offers both a role configuration area and a world-configuration area, put each setting in its corresponding section rather than copying role keys into world settings.
Set the claimable volume with LandClaimAllowance
LandClaimAllowance is the amount of claimable volume a role receives. The documented default is four chunks, where each chunk is 32 × 32 × 32, giving 131,072 cubic metres. Because this is volume, increasing a dimension of a cuboid can consume allowance much faster than its footprint suggests.
How to choose a value
- Use a smaller allowance for ordinary accounts when you want claims to protect compact homes and workshops.
- Give trusted building or administration roles a larger allowance only when their work requires it; a large allowance can let one role reserve substantial territory.
- Remember that the allowance is assigned per role. If a player can switch to another role, that role’s allowance may become the effective limit.
Do not infer that four chunks means four separate claims. Separation is controlled independently by LandClaimMaxAreas; the allowance is the total claimable volume available to that role.

Set the minimum claim dimensions with LandClaimMinSize
LandClaimMinSize defines the smallest permitted cuboid along X, Y and Z. A minimum-size rule prevents extremely small claims, but it can also make narrow builds or temporary test claims impossible.
Resolve the documented default conflict
Two BisectHosting references report different defaults: one lists 5 × 5 × 5 and another lists 6 × 6 × 6. Because those values conflict, do not publish or administer a server on the assumption that either number is universal. Open the live serverconfig.json and verify the value actually loaded by your release. If the file does not make the value clear, use the server’s in-game help and test a claim in a safe area.
Choose dimensions deliberately
Use equal X, Y and Z values when you want a simple cube requirement. Use different dimensions only when your building rules require a particular horizontal footprint or vertical depth. Check that the minimum does not exceed the space available to new players; otherwise a player can have allowance remaining but still be unable to create a valid claim.
Limit separate areas with LandClaimMaxAreas
LandClaimMaxAreas controls how many non-adjacent claim areas a role can create. The documented default is three. Adjacent areas are a different case from separate outposts: this setting is specifically about the number of distinct, non-adjacent areas.
Typical policy choices
- One area: keeps a role’s protection concentrated around a primary base.
- Three areas: matches the cited default and permits a main base plus a small number of remote sites.
- A higher value: supports roles responsible for multiple settlements, but increases the amount of map space that can be reserved independently.
Change the value in the role entry, or use /role [rolename] landclaimmaxareas [value] while authorized. Replace the bracketed terms with the actual role name and number; do not type the brackets themselves.

Enable or disable claiming for the whole world
The world setting allowLandClaiming is the global gate. The official World Configuration description says it determines whether players are allowed to use the land-claiming system and gives true as the default.
Disable claiming in an existing world
- Join as an administrator or use the server console with sufficient permission.
- Run
/worldconfig allowLandClaiming false. - Have a player attempt to open or create a claim in a controlled test location to confirm the restriction.
Re-enable claiming
Run /worldconfig allowLandClaiming true. Role limits still apply after the global switch is turned back on, so a player can be allowed to claim but remain limited by allowance, minimum size or maximum areas.
Do not confuse the world switch with role settings
Setting a role’s allowance to a large value cannot override allowLandClaiming false. Conversely, setting the world switch to true does not grant unlimited volume or unlimited claim areas.
Apply changes to an existing world
The official guidance distinguishes world configuration from the server configuration file: world-config values in serverconfig.json are intended to be set before a world is created. For an already-created world, use the in-game command system for world settings. This is especially important for the on/off switch, which is explicitly exposed through /worldconfig.

If your release exposes a role command for the limit you need, prefer that command and confirm the syntax with in-game help.

Role commands documented for this task
/role [rolename] landclaimmaxareas [value]changes the maximum number of non-adjacent areas./role [rolename] landclaimminsizeis listed for the minimum-size setting. The command reference supplied for this configuration does not show an argument in the command name, so run the current in-game help to see whether your version expects dimensions after the command.
No allowance-setting command is established in the supplied command references. Manage LandClaimAllowance through the role entry in serverconfig.json, then restart and test.
Verify the result after restarting
- Check the startup log. Confirm the server reaches a normal ready state instead of reporting a malformed configuration.
- Test the global switch. With claiming disabled, a test player should be unable to use the claiming system; with it enabled, role limits should be enforced.
- Test the minimum size. Attempt a cuboid just below the configured dimensions, then one that meets them. This exposes both incorrect values and coordinate-entry mistakes.
- Test the allowance. Create a small claim, inspect the remaining allowance through the game’s claim interface, and make a second claim only within the permitted total volume.
- Test separated areas. Create non-adjacent claims until the role reaches its configured maximum. Do not use adjacent extensions as the only test, because they do not represent the separate-area limit.
- Test each affected role. An administrator’s permissions can hide a normal player’s restriction, so repeat the test with an account assigned to every role you changed.
Troubleshooting common failures
The server will not start after editing
Restore the backup, then inspect the edited lines for invalid JSON punctuation, misspelled keys, duplicate keys or text where a number is expected. Reapply one change at a time while the server is stopped. Never delete unrelated role settings to make the file shorter; doing so can create a second problem while hiding the first.
Players still cannot claim after setting a large allowance
Check allowLandClaiming first. If it is false, the global switch blocks every role. If it is true, confirm that the player is using the role whose values you edited and that the server was restarted or the relevant command completed successfully.

A valid-looking claim is rejected as too small
Compare the proposed X, Y and Z dimensions with the live LandClaimMinSize. The conflicting 5 × 5 × 5 and 6 × 6 × 6 documentation makes a direct check essential. Also verify that you measured the cuboid in the same coordinate directions the game uses.
A player can create only a few remote claims
That behaviour is normally governed by LandClaimMaxAreas, whose cited default is three. Increase the value for the appropriate role with the file setting or the documented /role command, then retest using non-adjacent areas.

A file change appears to have no effect
Confirm that you edited the active server’s server_data/serverconfig.json, not a local client file or an inactive instance. Make sure the server was stopped before saving and restarted afterward. On an existing world, use the in-game command for world-level settings and check the current release’s help for role-command support.
A practical configuration workflow
For a new server, decide the policy before world creation: leave allowLandClaiming at its documented default unless you want claiming disabled, then set each role’s allowance, minimum dimensions and maximum separate areas in the Roles section. Start the server and test every role.
For an existing server, back up the world and configuration, use /worldconfig allowLandClaiming false or true for the global switch, and use the documented /role command when it covers the role limit you need. For an allowance change not covered by a documented command, stop the server, edit the role entry in serverconfig.json, restart, and verify with a test account.
Record the values you chose alongside the server version and date. Defaults and command behaviour can change between releases, and the minimum-size references already demonstrate why checking the live configuration is safer than copying an old guide.
