Jellyfin uses the term “image cache” for several different things. The server has a general cache directory controlled by --cachedir or JELLYFIN_CACHE_DIR; chapter images are video metadata stored under Jellyfin’s metadata directory; and Clear Cache Folder is a scheduled maintenance task. These mechanisms have different settings and different retention behavior.
Configure them separately: choose the server cache location first, enable chapter images only in libraries that need them, select whether extraction happens during scans or in a separate task, and schedule cleanup without assuming it removes chapter images. Confirm labels and behavior against the documentation for your installed Jellyfin release, because dashboard wording and task scope can change.
What Jellyfin means by “image cache”
Before changing a setting, identify which data you are trying to control. Treating all images as one cache can lead to misplaced files, unexpectedly long scans, or backups that omit artwork you intended to preserve.

This distinction also determines backup policy. A cache can normally be rebuilt, while chapter images may represent hours of extraction work and may be part of the metadata you want to restore.

How Jellyfin chooses the server cache directory
Jellyfin applies a defined precedence order:
- The command-line option
--cachedir. - The
JELLYFIN_CACHE_DIRenvironment variable. - The default for the installed platform.
On non-Windows systems, Jellyfin’s documented defaults follow XDG conventions. On Windows, the default is the cache subdirectory of Jellyfin’s data directory. The actual location therefore depends on the operating system, package, service definition, and any options supplied by your deployment.
Check the effective deployment before moving anything
Determine how Jellyfin starts on your system before editing configuration:
- A native service may define command-line arguments in its service unit or launch configuration.
- A container normally receives environment variables and volume mounts from Docker, Podman, Compose, or an orchestration platform.
- A manual launch may have the option directly in the startup command.
Use the data and log locations documented for your installed package to verify the current arrangement. Do not delete the old directory until the new location is working and you have confirmed that no other Jellyfin instance still depends on it.

The command-line method is explicit and has the highest precedence. Add --cachedir followed by the directory you want Jellyfin to use to the command that starts the server. For example, a service launch might contain:
jellyfin --cachedir /srv/jellyfin-cache/srv/jellyfin-cache is an example only; select a filesystem with sufficient space, reliable availability at boot, and permissions for the account running Jellyfin.

Procedure
- Create the destination directory using your operating system’s normal administrative tools.
- Give the Jellyfin service account ownership or write permission. A cache that exists but is not writable produces confusing failures because the process starts while individual operations fail.
- Add
--cachedirto the actual startup definition, not merely to a one-time shell command. - Restart Jellyfin through the same service manager or container tool that normally launches it.
- Check the server’s startup information and filesystem activity to confirm that new cache files appear in the destination.
- Leave the previous cache in place until you have verified normal playback, image loading, scans, and maintenance tasks. Remove obsolete data only after that verification.
When the option appears to have no effect
Look for a second setting that wins: because --cachedir has priority, an option in a service unit should override an environment variable, but editing the wrong unit or restarting the wrong instance will make it seem ineffective. Confirm the process arguments, the environment inherited by that process, and the instance whose dashboard you are viewing.
Use JELLYFIN_CACHE_DIR for environment-based deployments
The environment variable is useful when startup configuration is managed outside the Jellyfin command itself. Set:

Container example
Jellyfin’s container documentation includes an example that sets JELLYFIN_CACHE_DIR=/var/cache/jellyfin and maps a persistent volume to that path. The path is an example, not a required universal location. A Compose-style pattern could look like this:

- /srv/jellyfin-cache:/var/cache/jellyfinAdapt the image name, user settings, and volume syntax to your deployment. The important requirement is that the path inside the container matches the environment value and that the host-side storage survives container replacement. Ensure the container user can write to the mounted directory.

Choosing storage for a cache
- Use local storage that is mounted before Jellyfin starts; a missing mount can leave the process writing into an unintended empty directory.
- Keep the cache separate from irreplaceable media when you want to remove or recreate it without touching the library.
- Consider disk endurance and available space if your libraries generate substantial temporary data.
- Do not place the cache on a transient container layer if you expect it to survive upgrades or recreations.
Configure chapter images in each library
Chapter images are not controlled by the server cache-path setting. They are video metadata images stored in Jellyfin’s metadata directory. Enable them per library rather than globally assuming every video needs extracted previews.

Dashboard labels vary by Jellyfin release, but the workflow is the same:
- Open the administrator Dashboard.
- Go to the Libraries section.
- Edit the video library you want to change.
- Find the Chapter Images options.
- Enable chapter-image extraction if that library should have preview images.
- Save the library configuration.
Apply the setting only to libraries where chapter navigation or preview thumbnails are useful. Disabling it for other libraries avoids creating metadata that no client will display.
Set the chapter-image resolution
The resolution setting controls the size of images Jellyfin extracts. Jellyfin’s documentation notes that high resolution is unnecessary for a small preview window. There is no universal numeric recommendation established for every client, display, or library, so choose a level that matches how the images are consumed:
- Use a lower setting when previews are shown in a small player overlay and storage or extraction time matters.
- Use a higher setting only when clients display large chapter artwork and the additional metadata size is justified.
- Test a representative title on the clients your household actually uses before applying a more expensive setting to a very large library.
Changing the resolution does not necessarily rewrite every existing image immediately. Existing metadata may need to be regenerated by the appropriate extraction process for the new setting to be reflected.

Choose when chapter images are extracted
Jellyfin offers two extraction timings: during a library scan or through the separate Extract Chapter Images task. The choice affects scan duration and operational control.

Prefer a separate task for large libraries
If scan duration is a concern, turn off scan-time extraction in the library settings and use the Extract Chapter Images task instead. Run it after the initial metadata scan, during a maintenance window, or in smaller operational batches if your deployment permits that level of control. Monitor CPU, disk activity, and client responsiveness while it runs.
After changing the setting
- Save the library’s Chapter Images configuration.
- Decide whether existing titles need extraction or regeneration.
- Run or schedule Extract Chapter Images from the Dashboard task list.
- Open a few videos in a client and confirm that chapter previews appear at an acceptable quality.
- Review available metadata storage before expanding the setting to additional libraries.
Run and schedule Clear Cache Folder
Clear Cache Folder is a built-in Jellyfin maintenance task. The task interface lets an administrator run tasks manually and assign schedules. The task list distinguishes it from tasks that clear logs or transcodes, so select the cache task deliberately.
Run it manually
- Open the administrator Dashboard.
- Open the Scheduled Tasks or Tasks view; the exact menu name depends on your Jellyfin release.
- Locate Clear Cache Folder.
- Use the task’s Run or play control.
- Wait for the task to finish, then review its status and the server’s normal operation.
Do not interrupt the server or remove directories by hand while the task is active. If you need to know exactly what a particular release removes, consult that release’s task documentation or inspect behavior in a disposable test instance first.

Choose a time when playback and maintenance workloads are light. A schedule that is too frequent can create needless churn if the cache is routinely rebuilt; one that is too infrequent may leave unwanted temporary data longer than your operational policy allows. Record the schedule alongside your upgrade and backup procedures so another administrator understands why it exists.

What the task does not prove
The official task documentation confirms that Clear Cache Folder exists but does not define its complete deletion scope. In particular, do not claim that it deletes chapter images, nor assume a filename pattern or metadata directory is covered. Chapter images belong to the metadata system, and their retention should be managed through library settings, metadata administration, and backups rather than an unverified cache-cleaning assumption.
Back up chapter images when they matter to recovery
Jellyfin’s built-in backup can include metadata and, depending on the options selected, metadata images. Decide whether chapter images are part of your recovery objective:
- If a rebuilt server may regenerate all chapter images acceptably, you might prioritize a smaller backup and plan a later extraction task.
- If extraction time, server capacity, or exact metadata state matters, include metadata images in the backup options.
- Document which libraries have chapter images enabled and which resolution policy they use, so a restore reproduces the intended configuration.
Test a restore rather than assuming that a successful backup job guarantees every image is present. Keep backup storage separate from the cache volume; clearing or recreating a cache should not erase your recovery copy.

Troubleshoot common configuration problems
Images are missing after enabling Chapter Images
- Confirm the setting was saved on the correct library.
- Run Extract Chapter Images or wait for the next scheduled task; enabling the option alone may not process existing titles immediately.
- Check that Jellyfin can write to its metadata directory.
- Verify that the title contains chapter markers that can produce images and test another known title.
Library scans became unexpectedly slow
Scan-time extraction is the first setting to check. Move extraction to the separate task for a large or frequently changing library, then schedule that task during an idle period.
The cache directory remains empty
- Check whether
--cachediris present in the real service command. - Check the spelling and inherited value of
JELLYFIN_CACHE_DIR. - Remember that the command-line option overrides the environment variable.
- In a container, verify the mount exists inside the container at the exact path named by the variable.
- Check write permissions for the Jellyfin process and confirm you restarted the correct instance.
Clearing the cache removed something you expected to keep
Stop relying on assumptions about task scope. Check the documentation for the exact Jellyfin version, review your backup contents, and separate cache storage from metadata storage where practical. If chapter images are important, include metadata images in backups and retain the library configuration that enables their regeneration.
Configuration checklist
- Identify whether your goal concerns the server cache directory, chapter images, or the Clear Cache Folder task.
- Set the cache path with
--cachedirorJELLYFIN_CACHE_DIR, remembering the precedence order. - Use a persistent, writable cache volume in containers and verify the in-container path.
- Enable Chapter Images only in libraries that need them.
- Choose a practical resolution; Jellyfin does not prescribe one universal numeric value.
- Use scan-time extraction for small, low-impact libraries and the separate task when scan duration matters.
- Run and schedule Clear Cache Folder from the task interface, but do not treat it as a documented chapter-image deletion mechanism.
- Select metadata images in built-in backups when your restore plan depends on them.
- Recheck Dashboard labels and task behavior against the documentation for your installed release before automating destructive maintenance.
Bottom line
Configure Jellyfin’s general cache location independently from chapter-image generation. Use --cachedir or JELLYFIN_CACHE_DIR for the server cache, configure Chapter Images per library, and move expensive extraction to the dedicated task when scans are too slow. Schedule Clear Cache Folder as ordinary maintenance, but preserve chapter images through metadata-aware backup and restore planning because its exact deletion scope is not defined by the task documentation.
