The safest default for a conventional Xcode .pbxproj file is Git’s normal text-based three-way merge, followed by a deliberate review in Xcode whenever changes overlap. Do not mark the project file as binary: Git’s binary driver keeps the current branch’s copy and still leaves the path conflicted, so it does not merge project edits.
A custom merge driver can encode a team-specific rule, but it must be installed and maintained wherever merges run. Teams that can require recent Xcode versions can also evaluate Apple’s JSON .xcproj format, supported alongside .pbxproj in Xcode 27 and later and used by default for new projects in Xcode 27.2 and later.
What “reliable” project-file merging means
An Xcode project configuration file records targets, build phases, file references, build settings, and other relationships that the project needs to open and build. Git can compare and merge the file as text, but a text merge only establishes a syntactically combined file. It does not prove that every target still contains the right source files, that build phases are complete, or that the resulting project behaves correctly in your supported Xcode version.

For that reason, reliability is a workflow rather than a magic attribute. The practical sequence is:

- Keep the project configuration in the repository with the source it describes.
- Allow Git’s ordinary three-way text merge to handle non-overlapping edits.
- Use Xcode’s comparison view when Git reports overlapping conflicts.
- Open and exercise the merged project in the Xcode versions your team supports.
- Use a custom driver only when you have a specific rule, an implementation, and an owner for maintaining it.
Git documents its built-in text driver as the ordinary three-way merge. Its binary driver is intentionally different: it checks out the current branch’s version in the worktree while leaving the path unmerged. Treating a .pbxproj as binary therefore avoids an automatic textual combination, not the need to resolve the conflict. See Git’s gitattributes documentation.
Set up the safe default for a .pbxproj project
1. Commit the project configuration with the repository
Make sure the project bundle and its project file are tracked by Git, and that contributors are not exchanging local copies of the configuration outside version control. A normal status check should show the project file at the expected path:
git status
git ls-files '*.pbxproj'Do not add a binary attribute for the file. In a conventional project, Git’s text merge behavior is the starting point; no custom driver is required for the default case.

Use Git’s attribute inspection command to find an accidental binary setting or a repository rule that selects an unexpected driver:
git check-attr -a -- path/to/YourApp.xcodeproj/project.pbxprojIf your repository needs to state explicitly that the file is text, an entry such as the following in .gitattributes can do that:
*.pbxproj textThe text attribute identifies the path as text; it does not install a special Xcode-aware merger. Avoid entries that assign binary or a binary merge strategy to project files unless your policy deliberately requires manual replacement and understands the consequences.
3. Merge branches with normal Git commands
Fetch the branch, inspect your working tree, and start the merge only with local changes committed or intentionally stashed:

git fetch origin
git status
git merge origin/feature-branchWhen edits affect different lines or independent records, Git may complete the three-way merge automatically. A successful Git merge still deserves a project-level review before it is shared, because textual success is not the same as a valid Xcode configuration.
Resolve an actual project-file conflict in Xcode
Identify the unmerged paths
If Git stops, inspect the conflict list:
git statusThe status output identifies the conflicted .pbxproj path. Do not blindly choose one branch’s entire file unless that is genuinely the intended result; doing so can discard an unrelated target, build setting, or file reference added by the other branch.
Open the comparison view
Open the project in Xcode and use its source-control conflict comparison interface. Apple documents a view in which each conflict can be resolved by selecting:
- the change on the left side;
- the change on the right side;
- the left change followed by the right change; or
- the right change followed by the left change.
The “left then right” and “right then left” choices matter when both edits are valid and their order affects the resulting text. Inspect each conflict rather than applying one choice to every hunk. Apple’s workflow is described in Combining code changes in a source control repository.

After resolving every displayed conflict, save the project and ask Git whether any unmerged paths remain:
git statusWhen the project file is resolved, stage it and complete the merge:
git add path/to/YourApp.xcodeproj/project.pbxproj
git commitGit supplies a merge-message template; retain an explanatory message or edit it to record the branches involved. If the merge was the wrong operation or the conflict cannot be resolved safely, cancel it before staging a result:

git merge --abortAborting returns the worktree and index to the pre-merge state so you can update the branch, coordinate with the other contributor, or retry with a different plan.

Validate the merged project before relying on it
Neither Git’s text driver nor Xcode’s conflict view establishes semantic correctness automatically. Once the merge is staged, open the project in the team’s supported Xcode environment and review the areas most likely to be affected by parallel edits:
- targets and their membership;
- build phases, including compiled sources, resources, and linked frameworks;
- build settings and configuration-specific overrides;
- file and group references shown in the project navigator;
- schemes and the destinations used by continuous integration; and
- signing, entitlements, and package or framework references where applicable.
Build the affected targets and run the checks your repository normally requires. If the project opens but a target is missing a file or setting, fix the configuration and commit that correction as part of the merge. This review is a team safeguard; it is not a claim that Xcode’s comparison view validates the project’s behavior.

When a custom Git merge driver is justified
A custom driver is an advanced option for a team that can state exactly how two project-file changes should be combined—for example, a deterministic merger that understands the project’s records and ordering. It is not a universal Xcode recommendation, and it does not make every merge conflict-free. If the team cannot explain the rule, test it against representative conflicts, and keep the same driver available on developer and build machines, the ordinary text merge plus human review is safer.
The attribute selects a driver; configuration supplies it
Assigning a name in .gitattributes does not create the program behind that name. You must define the driver in repository configuration (.git/config) or in a user-level Git configuration that is consistently present on every environment performing merges.
A typical arrangement has two parts:

git config --local merge.xcodeproj.driver '/absolute/path/to/your-driver %O %A %B'The executable path and quoting depend on your operating system and the driver you maintain. A repository-local configuration travels with the clone only if your provisioning process installs it; the .gitattributes line alone is insufficient.

Understand the driver contract
Git substitutes three temporary-file paths when it invokes the command:

Git expects the driver to leave its result in the file named by %A. It must exit with status zero when it merged cleanly and a nonzero status when conflicts remain. Those requirements are stated in the Git gitattributes documentation.
A minimal wrapper might pass the three paths to a separately maintained merger:

# Return 0 for a clean merge, nonzero for unresolved conflicts.This is a contract example, not a ready-made Xcode merger. The driver must be tested with additions, deletions, simultaneous edits to the same setting, target renames, and malformed or unexpected input. Keep a documented installation procedure, pin the driver version where appropriate, and ensure local development, CI, and release automation invoke the same implementation.
Decide whether the maintenance cost is worth it

Evaluate Apple’s JSON .xcproj format
Apple documents a newer JSON project configuration format. Xcode 27 and later supports both .xcproj and the conventional .pbxproj format. Xcode 27.2 and later defaults to JSON for newly created projects. Apple’s stated reason for the change is qualitative: “Additionally, merge conflicts are less likely because the JSON file format isolates configuration changes.” That is not a quantified conflict-rate guarantee.

Check compatibility before changing formats
List every environment that opens or parses the project before adopting JSON:

- the oldest Xcode version used by any contributor;
- the Xcode version installed on CI and release machines;
- scripts, generators, or other tools that read the project file;
- code-review and merge tooling that assumes a
.pbxprojpath; and - external collaborators who need to open the repository.
If any required environment is older than Xcode 27, the JSON format may not be an option for that workflow. Do not infer that migration is mandatory merely because newer Xcode versions support it. A team can continue using .pbxproj while documenting the text-merge and review process.
Make the format decision explicit
For a team that can standardize on Xcode 27 or later, create a trial branch, convert or create a representative project, and verify that opening, building, testing, and automation all work. Review the resulting diffs with the same care used for a .pbxproj. The potential benefit is better isolation of independent configuration changes, not an assurance that conflicts or semantic mistakes disappear.
Troubleshoot common failure modes
Git says the file is binary
Inspect attributes with git check-attr -a -- path/to/project.pbxproj. Remove or correct the rule assigning binary, then retry the merge from a clean state. If a merge is already in progress, save any needed notes and use git merge --abort before changing attributes and starting again.
The merge completed, but Xcode shows a missing file or target
Git’s clean exit only means its text algorithm produced a result. Compare the affected target, build phase, and file reference with the intended branch changes, repair the project in Xcode, build the relevant targets, and commit the correction. Do not assume that a conflict-free status is proof of a correct project.
The custom driver is reported as missing or fails on CI
Confirm that the merge-driver definition exists in the configuration used by the failing environment, that its executable path is valid there, and that the process can read and write the temporary files. Check that the command receives all three placeholders and that it writes the result to the current-version path represented by %A. A missing executable, a path that exists only on one developer’s machine, or an incorrect exit status can turn an otherwise resolvable merge into a failed one.
Contributors use incompatible Xcode versions after a format change
Stop the rollout and identify the oldest required Xcode version. Keep the project in the format supported by all mandatory environments, or establish a coordinated upgrade before adopting JSON. Xcode 27’s support for both formats does not extend backward to older Xcode releases.
