Easy Anti-Cheat (EAC) is enabled by default on Rust servers. To change it, stop the server, use your host’s EAC toggle or Rust settings editor, or add the commonly documented convars to startup arguments or server.cfg, then restart. Keep EAC enabled on any public server: hosting guides warn that disabling security settings can remove the server from Rust’s in-game public list.
The exact control-panel labels and convar behavior can change. The commands below come from hosting documentation and convar references rather than a current Facepunch administrator manual, so verify the syntax in the Rust wiki or your provider’s current panel before changing a live server.

EAC is the anti-cheat service used by Rust’s server and client. A server normally starts with anti-cheat protection active. Disabling it is primarily an option for a private test instance, a local server, or a modded environment where every player receives the connection details directly.
There are three practical configuration routes:
- A control-panel toggle, if your host exposes one.
- A Rust server settings file edited in the panel.
- Startup arguments or
server.cfgentries containing EAC-related convars.
All three methods require a server restart before players receive the new setting. Do not edit a running configuration and assume the change is active; first stop the process, save one authoritative configuration, and start it again.

Choose the safest configuration method

Use one method as the source of truth. If a panel toggle and a file contain opposite values, the server may start with a result that is difficult to diagnose.
Before you change EAC
Decide whether the server should be public
For a public community server, leave EAC enabled. Hosting guides warn that disabling EAC or other security features can keep a server out of Rust’s in-game public server list. A private server can still be useful without listing: players can connect directly from the Rust client with F1, followed by:

Share that address only with the players you intend to admit.
Plan a maintenance window
- Tell connected players that the server will stop and restart.
- Record the current setting before changing it.
- Stop the server cleanly through the host panel or service manager.
- Change only the EAC-related value, leaving map, identity, ports, and world settings untouched.
Method 1: use a host control-panel toggle
This is normally the least error-prone option when available. One documented panel workflow is:

- Stop the Rust server and wait until the panel reports that the process has exited.
- Open the server’s Settings tab or equivalent configuration page.
- Find the Easy Anti-Cheat, EAC, or security toggle.
- Switch it off for a private or test server, or leave it on for a public server.
- Save or apply the configuration.
- Start or restart the server.
- After startup completes, check the console or server status page for errors and test a connection.
Panel terminology is not standardized. A toggle may be under General, Security, Rust settings, or Advanced settings. If you cannot find it, use the panel’s settings-file editor or ask the host which configuration field controls EAC rather than adding random arguments.
Method 2: edit the Rust server settings file
Some providers expose a Rust Server Settings file through the control panel. The exact filename and field names are provider-specific, so do not assume that a field from one host exists on another.

- Open the file editor or configuration section labelled Rust Server Settings, Server Settings, or similar.
- Search for an EAC or secure-server option.
- Set the field to the value shown by your provider for enabled or disabled operation.
- Save the file and restart the server.
- Review the startup log for an invalid-key or parsing error. If the server ignores the value, restore the backup and use the provider’s documented toggle or startup-argument method.
Back up the original file before editing. A settings editor can rewrite formatting or remove unknown keys, so retaining a copy makes rollback straightforward.
Method 3: set the startup arguments
Several hosting guides document the following three arguments for disabling EAC:

+server.encryption 0Enter them in the panel’s Additional startup arguments, Launch options, or equivalent field, with each argument separated by a space if the panel uses one line:
+server.secure 0 +server.eac 0 +server.encryption 0- Stop the server.
- Open the startup-argument editor.
- Remove an older EAC or secure-server entry so two contradictory values are not supplied.
- Add the documented arguments exactly, preserving the plus signs, periods, and spaces.
- Save the launch configuration.
- Restart the server and inspect the first part of the startup log.
To re-enable EAC, the same guides say to change the values to 1, or remove the disabling lines and let the default apply:
+server.secure 1 +server.eac 1 +server.encryption 1Removing the lines is usually preferable when your provider’s default is known to be secure, because it avoids preserving a convar whose meaning may change. If your host specifically requires explicit values, follow its current instructions instead.
Method 4: put the values in server.cfg
If your installation loads a server.cfg, hosting documentation gives the same three entries as file-based convars:

server.encryption 0- Stop the server.
- Open the
server.cfgeditor or locate the file in the host’s file manager. - Back up the file.
- Add the entries on separate lines, without the leading
+used by startup arguments. - Save the file and restart the server.
- Confirm that the file is actually loaded by this server instance; some hosts use a generated configuration path or a different profile directory.
To restore protection, change each documented value to 1 or delete the lines. Do not leave a disabling entry in server.cfg while enabling the panel toggle; keep one clear configuration path.
Verify the result after restarting
Check the server process
- Wait for the normal “server ready” state in the console.
- Look for argument-parsing errors, unknown-convar messages, or a startup loop.
- Confirm that the expected port and server identity are unchanged.
Test the intended connection path
With EAC enabled, test from the normal Rust browser and direct connection. With EAC disabled, do not use absence from the public browser as proof that the configuration failed; that absence is an expected consequence reported by hosting guides. Test with the console command client.connect <IP>:<port> instead.
Check for conflicting configuration
If behavior does not match the value you set, search all of these locations for another declaration: the control-panel toggle, additional startup arguments, server.cfg, generated settings files, and any service script that launches Rust. Remove stale entries, restart, and test again.
Should you disable EAC for modded servers?
Server-side uMod (Oxide) plugins work with EAC enabled. You do not need to disable EAC merely because you install server-side plugins. Keeping EAC active preserves the normal protection and public-server behavior.

Some client-side modifications may require EAC to be disabled. That is a materially different risk: every connected player must be trusted, and the server may no longer appear in the public list. If a plugin author says EAC must be disabled, confirm that the requirement concerns a client-side component rather than a server-side plugin.

Important uncertainty about the convar names
Available hosting guides do not agree perfectly on whether server.secure and server.eac are separate switches, aliases, or part of a broader secure-server configuration. One convar list describes server.eac as enabling or disabling Easy Anti-Cheat and describes server.secure as the EAC toggle; the same list also contains an older description of server.secure as Valve Anti-Cheat. That older wording may not reflect current Rust behavior.
No current official Facepunch administrator page confirming all three names and values was identified. Treat the commands as host-documented procedures, not permanent API guarantees. Before a Rust update or migration, check the current Facepunch wiki and your provider’s release notes. If the panel offers a dedicated EAC switch, prefer it over guessing which convar is authoritative.
Fix “EAC: Timed out” on a player’s PC
An “EAC: Timed out” message is usually a client-service problem, not proof that the server administrator changed the server’s EAC setting. Have the affected player work through these steps:
- In Steam, open Rust’s properties and use Verify integrity of game files.
- Open Rust’s installation folder and locate
EasyAntiCheat_Setup.exeinside the Rust EasyAntiCheat directory. - Run the setup program as Administrator and choose the repair option for the Easy Anti-Cheat service.
- Restart the computer and try Rust again.
- Check firewall and antivirus rules. Add the Rust and Easy Anti-Cheat components to the product’s allowed or excluded list only when you trust the files and understand the security implications.
If several players receive the timeout simultaneously after a server configuration change, check the server’s startup log and confirm that the server was restarted cleanly. If only one player is affected, complete the client repair steps before changing server convars.
How bans and enforcement work
Facepunch has described additional Easy Anti-Cheat work aimed at recoil cheats, often called scripting, and says it works closely with the Epic Games EAC team. Facepunch also maintains a centralized banning page on its wiki.

Administrator guidance states that when EAC catches a player, Facepunch bans that account from every Rust server rather than requiring each server owner to issue an equivalent EAC ban. Server operators should still enforce their own community rules, but disabling EAC does not transfer global EAC enforcement into a local server setting.
