To configure a device for a self-hosted proxy, you need the proxy’s protocol, hostname or IP address, port, and any required credentials. Then enter those details in the setting the device or app actually uses—system-wide, per Wi-Fi network, in a browser, or in an individual application. A proxy setting does not automatically route every app or connection through the server.
Before you configure a device, collect the proxy details
Get the connection information from the server administrator or the configuration you used to deploy the proxy:
- Protocol: for example, HTTP or SOCKS5. Use only a protocol supported by both the proxy and the client.
- Hostname or IP address: the address the device can reach from its current network.
- Port: the listening port configured on your proxy.
- Credentials: username and password, if authentication is enabled.
Also confirm that the proxy is reachable from the device’s network. Do not reuse a sample host or port from another service’s instructions; enter the endpoint for your own server.
Choose where to configure the proxy
First decide what traffic you want to cover. A system or network setting is convenient when the operating system provides one and the apps honor it. A browser or application setting is narrower but can work when that program does not inherit system settings. PAC files and tunnel-based routing are options only when the client supports them.

- System setting: can serve apps that honor the operating system’s proxy configuration, but does not guarantee that every app will use it.
- Per-network setting: useful when the device exposes proxy settings for a particular Wi-Fi connection.
- PAC file: use this only if your proxy operator provides a proxy auto-configuration URL and the client supports PAC.
- Browser or app setting: configure the program directly if it has its own proxy controls or does not follow the system setting.
- Tunnel or routing software: may route more traffic through a proxy, but its actual coverage depends on the software and platform.
Configure a proxy on Windows
Open Settings → Network & internet → Proxy. Windows provides automatic detection, a setup-script option, and manual configuration; use the method that matches what your proxy setup provides. Microsoft’s Windows proxy instructions describe these choices and the manual controls.
Manual configuration
- Under the manual proxy section, enable the option to use a proxy server.
- Enter your proxy’s hostname or IP address and port.
- Add site exceptions if some destinations should connect directly.
- Choose whether to bypass the proxy for local intranet addresses. Microsoft recommends bypassing local intranet addresses unless your organization requires proxy use for them.
- Save the settings, then test a supported application.
Use the setup-script option only when you have a PAC or other configuration script URL from your proxy administrator. Automatic detection is not a substitute for entering a self-hosted endpoint when no automatic configuration is available.

Configure other platforms and clients
Proxy controls and coverage differ by operating system, browser, and app. The instructions below describe what the cited platform guidance establishes; they are not a guarantee that every client supports every proxy protocol.

macOS
Cloudflare documents PAC setup at System Settings → Network → active service → Details → Proxies. Use that route when you have a PAC URL and your Mac’s client supports it. The page describes PAC configuration for its own endpoints; it does not mean that every self-hosted proxy supplies a PAC file or uses the same protocol. See Cloudflare’s PAC setup instructions.

Linux desktop and command-line tools
Cloudflare’s guidance covers PAC configuration in GNOME and KDE desktop environments. It also notes that most Linux command-line tools, including curl and wget, do not natively use PAC files. For command-line use, configure the tool directly with its supported proxy options or environment variables; those conventions vary by program and do not automatically route all system traffic.
Android
The cited Android guidance describes setting a proxy separately for each Wi-Fi network rather than using one global Android proxy setting. Menu names and available controls vary by manufacturer and Android version. A Wi-Fi proxy setting also does not prove that every app will use the proxy; per-app routing requires compatible software. iPhone and iPad
Proxy support depends on the client and proxy type. Cloudflare states that iOS and iPadOS do not support the HTTPS proxy type used by its Gateway endpoints; that is a product-specific limitation, not proof that iOS cannot use any proxy. The tun2proxy project lists iOS among the platforms supported by its own tunnel client. Check the current documentation for any tunnel or proxy app before relying on its routing coverage: tun2proxy project documentation.

Firefox
Firefox uses its own proxy settings by default rather than automatically inheriting the operating system’s proxy. In Firefox’s network settings, either enter the proxy configuration directly or select Use system proxy settings if you want it to follow the OS setting. Cloudflare documents this distinction in its PAC and device configuration guide.

Applications with their own proxy controls
Use an app’s own proxy settings when that program offers them and needs a different configuration from the device. For example, Jump Desktop documents HTTPS and SOCKS5 settings in its desktop clients, while its iOS and Android apps do not provide proxy settings. In that documentation, “HTTPS” means an HTTP proxy that supports the CONNECT method; do not assume another app uses the same label or behavior. See Jump Desktop’s proxy documentation.

Test from the actual app you intend to use, or from a command-line client that supports the selected protocol. A successful test in one program does not establish that other apps or all device traffic use the proxy.
- Confirm the hostname or IP, port, and protocol match the proxy server’s configuration.
- Check that the device can reach the server over its current network and that any required credentials are correct.
- Review bypass rules and exceptions; the destination may be excluded from proxying.
- Test from the target application. If it fails, check whether the app supports your proxy protocol and authentication method.
- For a command-line test, use syntax documented for your client and protocol. The HelixProxy setup guide includes curl examples for HTTP and SOCKS5; replace its example endpoint with your own and treat those examples as project-specific: HelixProxy client setup.
What a proxy setting does—and does not—cover
Coverage depends on the method and the client. A Windows manual entry, an Android Wi-Fi setting, a browser setting, and a tunnel client are not interchangeable. Some programs ignore system settings, some support only specific protocols, and some have no proxy controls. If you need particular apps or traffic to use the proxy, verify their behavior individually rather than assuming a device-level entry covers them all.
