Configure Control D in five stages: create or select a profile, enable its category filters, add any domain-specific custom rules, review rule precedence, and deploy that profile’s resolver to the intended endpoint or router. The policy does nothing until a device is actually using its Control D endpoint.
A profile can be shared by several endpoints, and multiple profiles can be enforced together. The important decisions are scope (category, service, or domain), action (Block, Bypass, or Redirect), domain pattern (plain domain or wildcard), and deployment method.
How do I configure Control D profiles, filters, and custom DNS rules?
Start with a policy that matches the device or use case. Use profiles to group filters, service settings, custom rules, and profile options; use filters for broad categories; use services for service-level behavior; and use custom rules when one domain needs a deliberate Block, Bypass, or Redirect action. Finally, configure the profile’s resolver on the device or router that should obey it. Control D describes this policy model in its Profiles documentation.

The dashboard configuration and the endpoint configuration are separate jobs. Editing a profile changes the policy, but DNS requests are governed by it only after an endpoint is created and configured to use that profile’s resolver.

Understand what a Control D profile contains
A profile is a reusable policy rather than a device itself. It collects the controls that should apply to one or more endpoints.
| Policy component | What it controls | Best use |
|---|---|---|
| Filters | Category-based blocklists | Block broad classes of domains, such as advertising or other categories offered in the dashboard |
| Services | Service-level rules | Apply a service-specific behavior when the profile offers one |
| Custom Rules | Domain-level Block, Bypass, or Redirect actions | Make a narrow exception, block one domain, or send a domain to another destination |
| Default Rule | Fallback behavior | Handle requests that do not match a higher-priority rule |
| Profile options | Other settings associated with the policy | Keep related configuration together for a device group or use case |
One profile can serve several endpoints. Separate profiles are useful when endpoints need materially different policies—for example, a work computer may need different filtering from a personal phone. You can also enforce more than one profile, but combined policies must be evaluated using Control D’s precedence rules rather than by assuming that the last profile added wins.
Choose a profile structure before editing
Use one profile for a consistent group
Choose one profile when the same categories, services, exceptions, and fallback behavior should apply to every endpoint in a group. This reduces maintenance: changing the profile changes the policy for every endpoint that uses it.
Split profiles when requirements differ
Create separate profiles when a device, person, or network needs a different policy. Typical reasons include stricter controls on a child’s device, fewer blocks on a work system, or a test policy that should not affect production endpoints. Give each profile a purpose that remains clear when you return to it later.
Combine profiles only with precedence in mind
Multiple enforced profiles can be useful when one supplies common policy and another adds targeted rules. However, a Custom Rule in one profile can outrank a filter in another because rule category has priority across the combined policy. Treat combined profiles as one ordered ruleset, not as independent layers whose dashboard order determines the result.

| One profile | All endpoints using it | Simple administration, but every endpoint receives the same policy |
| Separate profiles | Different endpoint groups | More control, with more policies to maintain |
| Multiple enforced profiles | Combined policy on one endpoint | Flexible composition, but precedence must be checked for overlaps |
Create or select the profile
- Decide the endpoint group. Identify which devices should share the policy and which need different treatment.
- Open Profiles in the Control D dashboard. Select an existing profile or create a new one for the group or use case.
- Name and organize it for its purpose. A name such as “personal devices” or “work systems” is more useful than a generic label when several profiles exist.
- Edit the profile’s settings. This is where filters, services, custom rules, and other profile options are associated with the policy.
- Record which endpoints will use it. The profile is not active on a device until that endpoint is configured with the profile’s resolver details.
Keep policy design separate from deployment. You can finish the profile first, then apply its endpoint configuration to the relevant operating system or router.
Enable and manage category filters
Filters are category blocklists. To enable one, edit the relevant profile and toggle that filter; use the same profile control to disable it. The filter setting belongs to the profile, so every endpoint using that profile receives the change. Control D explains the available filter types in its Filters documentation.
Native versus third-party filters
Control D distinguishes native filters that it maintains from third-party filters maintained by external communities. Control D does not control the contents of a third-party list. That distinction matters when a domain is blocked: the policy may be correct according to the selected list even though the list itself contains a false positive or an outdated entry.
Select categories deliberately
- Enable only categories that match the objective of the profile.
- Expect a category filter to affect many domains, not just one site.
- Use a custom rule for a known exception instead of disabling a broad filter for every endpoint.
- When testing, change one filter at a time so you can associate a result with the setting that caused it.
A filter is the right tool for category-wide coverage. It is not the most precise tool when the requirement concerns a single hostname or a small set of related domains.
Add custom DNS rules for specific domains
Custom Rules provide three actions: Block, Bypass, and Redirect. Open the profile’s Custom Rules area, create a rule, enter the domain pattern, choose the action, and save it. Rules can be grouped into folders to keep exceptions and redirects organized. The documented rule syntax and behavior are described in Control D’s Custom Rules guide.

|---|---|---|---|
| Block | Prevents resolution according to the rule | A particular domain should be denied regardless of a broader policy | Confirm the exact hostname; blocking a parent domain can affect its subdomains |
| Bypass | Resolves through authoritative DNS and can override a filter, service, or default rule | A legitimate domain must work despite a lower-priority block | Keep the exception narrow because it can override other policy behavior |
| Redirect | Sends matching DNS requests to the destination specified by the rule | A domain needs deliberate redirection rather than ordinary resolution | Verify the destination and test clients individually |
Use the correct domain pattern
A plain domain rule, such as example.com, applies to that domain and its subdomains. A wildcard rule, such as *.example.com, matches subdomains but not the bare example.com domain.
Recommended Free Tools
- Use a plain domain when both the parent domain and all of its subdomains should receive the action.
- Use a wildcard when only subdomains should match and the bare domain must remain unaffected.
- Enter the exact hostname when an application uses a particular service endpoint and a broader parent-domain exception would be excessive.
Do not assume that a visible website hostname is the only hostname an application uses. Authentication, APIs, media, telemetry, and content delivery can be separate DNS requests. Inspect the activity log when available before deciding which rule to add.
Apply the documented rule precedence
When several mechanisms could match a request, Control D evaluates them in this order: Custom Rules, Service Rules, Filters, then the Default Rule. The same category order applies when multiple profiles are enforced. Consequently, a Custom Rule in one profile can take priority over a filter in another. The advanced rules creation guide documents this ordering.
Specificity within domain rules
For overlapping eligible domain matches, a more specific plain-domain match wins. Plain domain rules take priority over wildcard rules. For example, a rule for login.example.com is more specific than a rule for example.com when the request is for that hostname, and a plain-domain match takes priority over a matching wildcard pattern.
Avoid equal-specificity wildcard conflicts
Do not create competing wildcard patterns with equal specificity and then rely on their position in the dashboard to decide the outcome. Remove the conflict or make one rule more specific. Explicitly designing a single winning match is safer than trying to infer an ordering that is not part of the documented precedence model.

Use precedence to diagnose surprising results
- Check whether a Custom Rule matches the exact request.
- Check Service Rules that may apply to the same domain.
- Check the enabled filters in every enforced profile.
- Check the Default Rule only after higher-priority categories have been excluded.
This sequence also explains why adding a Bypass can restore a domain that a filter blocks, while changing the Default Rule may have no visible effect.
Deploy the profile to an endpoint or router
A configured profile affects DNS only after its resolver is deployed. Control D’s Deployment documentation describes DNS-over-HTTPS, DNS-over-TLS, and DNS-over-QUIC, plus legacy DNS listeners when those listeners are enabled in endpoint settings. Supported modern operating systems can use secure DNS without extra software.
Operating-system deployment
- Create or select the endpoint in Control D. Associate it with the profile you configured.
- Choose the resolver protocol supported by the device. The deployment information includes DNS-over-HTTPS, DNS-over-TLS, and DNS-over-QUIC; use a legacy DNS listener only when it is enabled and appropriate for the endpoint.
- Copy the endpoint’s resolver details exactly. The endpoint-specific values identify which profile should process the device’s requests.
- Open the operating system’s secure DNS or private DNS settings. Enter the supplied resolver information using the protocol and field names presented by that operating system.
- Save the setting and reconnect if required. Existing applications may retain DNS data temporarily, so close and reopen the affected application when a test appears unchanged.
The exact setting path varies by operating system and version; use the protocol-specific values shown for the endpoint rather than substituting a generic resolver address.
Router deployment
- Create the endpoint for the router and assign the intended profile.
- Open the router’s Internet, WAN, or upstream DNS settings. The label differs by manufacturer.
- Set the router’s upstream DNS to the Control D resolver for that endpoint.
- Apply the router configuration. Devices receiving DNS through that router should then send requests through the assigned profile.
- Test a client device. Confirm that it is using the router for DNS and that the expected rule appears in activity information when available.
Router deployment is broad: every client that uses the router’s DNS can inherit the policy. Use separate endpoint or profile arrangements when some clients must not receive the same controls.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Verify that the intended profile is active
Verification should test both deployment and policy. A correctly edited profile can appear ineffective when a device is still using another resolver, a router is advertising different DNS settings, or an application has cached information.

- 【Reduce Safety Risks】Cable tray under desk keeps all plugs away from your kids, no more worry about tripping. Using 2 holes wire tray saves extra space, helps you easily cabling and wire protection. The mesh design is not easy to accumulate dust, but avoids safety accidents caused by messy wires.
- Confirm the endpoint association. Check that the device or router is tied to the profile you edited.
- Confirm the resolver setting. Make sure the operating system or router is using the endpoint’s Control D resolver, not an older manual value.
- Test a known filter result. Use a domain that should be affected by an enabled category, while recognizing that third-party list contents can change independently.
- Test a custom rule. Check the exact hostname covered by the Block, Bypass, or Redirect pattern.
- Inspect activity information. When available, identify the request and the mechanism that produced the result.
- Retest after changing one setting. This isolates profile edits from endpoint or caching issues.
If a profile works on one endpoint but not another, compare their resolver configuration before changing the policy. The profile may be correct while only one endpoint is actually enforcing it.
Troubleshoot blocked legitimate domains and false positives
Find the exact blocked hostname
Start with the request that failed, not only the website’s visible address. A service can depend on several domains, and blocking one supporting hostname can break login, media, payments, or other functions while the main site remains reachable. Use the activity log when available to identify the exact request.
Identify which mechanism blocked it
- Determine whether a Custom Rule matches the hostname.
- Check Service Rules for a matching service behavior.
- Check which enabled filter contains the domain.
- Review the Default Rule only if no higher-priority match explains the result.
Add a narrow Bypass when appropriate
Control D’s false-positive guidance describes creating a local Bypass Custom Rule when a legitimate domain should be allowed. Match the smallest necessary hostname. A Bypass can override a filter, service, or default rule for the matched domain, so bypassing an entire parent domain may allow more traffic than intended.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Report third-party list errors to the list maintainer
If a third-party filter is responsible, report the false positive to that list’s maintainer. Control D does not maintain the contents of third-party filters. You can still use a narrow local Bypass while the list maintainer investigates, provided the exception is acceptable for your policy.
Remove obsolete exceptions
After a filter is corrected or a service changes its hostnames, review temporary Bypass and Redirect rules. Unused exceptions expand the policy surface and can conceal future troubleshooting causes.
Choose the right configuration for common goals
| Goal | Recommended control | Domain scope | Reason |
|---|---|---|---|
| Block an entire category | Enable a profile filter | Category-wide | One profile setting covers all domains represented by that list |
| Allow one legitimate site blocked by a filter | Bypass Custom Rule | Exact hostname or narrowly chosen parent | Overrides the lower-priority block without disabling the category filter everywhere |
| Deny one domain regardless of broad settings | Block Custom Rule | Plain domain or wildcard chosen deliberately | Custom Rules outrank Services, Filters, and the Default Rule |
| Send selected requests elsewhere | Redirect Custom Rule | Exact or wildcard pattern | Applies an explicit destination to matching requests |
| Apply different policies to work and personal devices | Separate profiles | Endpoint group | Prevents one group’s exceptions from changing another group’s policy |
| Enforce a household or office policy broadly | Router endpoint | Clients using that router | Centralizes DNS deployment, subject to each client using the router’s upstream DNS |
Maintain the policy safely
- Review profiles whenever devices change ownership or purpose.
- Document why each Bypass or Redirect exists and which hostname it covers.
- Prefer a plain domain only when subdomains should also match; otherwise use a wildcard or exact hostname with the intended scope.
- Check every enforced profile when a result is unexpected.
- Re-test after changing filters, services, custom rules, or endpoint resolver settings.
- Keep third-party filter limitations in mind when evaluating a block.
- Use activity records to discover supporting domains before adding broad exceptions.
The dependable workflow is policy first, precedence second, deployment third, and verification last. A profile that is carefully designed but not attached to the endpoint is inactive; an endpoint that is deployed but governed by overlapping rules must be diagnosed using the documented order.
Quick Recap
Final configuration checklist
- Select or create the profile for the intended endpoint group.
- Enable only the category filters that support the policy, noting whether each is native or third-party.
- Add Custom Rules with the deliberate action: Block, Bypass, or Redirect.
- Choose plain-domain or wildcard matching according to whether the bare domain should match.
- Check Service Rules, Filters, and the Default Rule whenever more than one mechanism could apply.
- Create the endpoint and deploy its DNS-over-HTTPS, DNS-over-TLS, DNS-over-QUIC, or enabled legacy resolver configuration.
- For router use, set the endpoint’s Control D resolver as the router’s upstream DNS.
- Verify the resolver on a real client and inspect activity for the exact hostname and matching mechanism.
- For false positives, add the narrowest suitable Bypass and report third-party list errors to that list’s maintainer.
