Rust building decay is controlled by server convars, not by a per-foundation toggle. Set the global decay.scale multiplier, decide whether Tool Cupboard upkeep is enabled with decay.upkeep, adjust the upkeep payment period if needed, then restart the server. A scale of 1 is normal decay, 0.5 is half speed, and 0 disables decay driven by that multiplier. Upkeep and decay scale are separate: turning upkeep off does not automatically make structures permanent.
Which Rust settings control decay?
Rust exposes several decay-related convars. The first three are the settings most administrators need; the others matter for edge cases and newer systems.

These controls require administrator-level server access. A host’s web panel may expose them as editable variables, while a self-hosted server normally uses server.cfg or launch arguments.
decay.scale: the global speed multiplier
decay.scale changes the rate at which eligible structures lose health. At 1, the server uses its normal decay rate. At 0.5, decay progresses at half that rate. At 0, the multiplier removes decay for structures governed by this system. A later Rust change made this multiplier affect both the delay before decay begins and the decay duration, so reducing the value can change more than the visible damage-per-tick rate.

Use a decimal value, not a percentage string. For example, enter 0.5, not 50%. Values above 1 accelerate decay; only use them when you intentionally want a harsher server and have tested the result.
decay.upkeep: Tool Cupboard maintenance
When upkeep is enabled, a structure inside a stocked Tool Cupboard’s radius is protected from decay while the cupboard consumes the required resources. The cupboard must contain the correct building materials, and the structure must remain within its coverage. If the cupboard runs out of resources, covered pieces can begin decaying again.

Setting decay.upkeep false returns the server to behavior from before the upkeep system. It is not the same as setting decay.scale 0: disabling upkeep removes the payment-and-coverage mechanic, but it does not promise permanent buildings. If you want no decay, set the global scale to zero and test a base rather than relying on the upkeep switch alone.
decay.upkeep_period_minutes: the payment window
The default period is 1440 minutes (24 hours). Increasing it makes each upkeep payment cover a longer period and therefore lowers the effective upkeep burden over time. It changes the accounting window, not the global decay multiplier. A shorter period makes upkeep checks and payments more frequent.
decay.upkeep_grief_protection: protection after a cupboard is destroyed
This convar caps how many minutes of upkeep a Tool Cupboard can continue spending after the cupboard itself is destroyed. Its default is also 1440. It is a grief-protection limit, not a general decay timer. Lowering it makes a base lose its post-destruction buffer sooner; raising it gives more time, subject to the server’s other decay rules.

Choose the behavior you want before editing files
Decide whether your priority is normal progression, a forgiving casual server, or permanent construction. The following profiles use the values commonly described for Rust servers; they are starting points, not guarantees about the exact time a particular piece will survive.

Do not promise players that a base lasts a fixed number of days without upkeep. Survival depends on the scale, the current Rust decay implementation, the structure’s state, and whether the server has introduced additional decay rules. No single universally applicable published duration establishes how long every base lasts without upkeep.
Configure decay in server.cfg
The exact location of server.cfg varies by operating system and host. Use the configuration file that your server launch process actually reads; editing an unused copy has no effect.
- Stop the server. Do not edit a live file while the process is rewriting configuration.
- Open the active configuration. In a hosting panel, use the server-configuration or startup-variables editor. On a self-hosted installation, open the
server.cfgfile associated with that instance. - Add or change the convars. Put one setting per line. A half-speed server with normal upkeep can use:
decay.scale 0.5 decay.upkeep true decay.upkeep_period_minutes 1440 decay.upkeep_grief_protection 1440 - Save the file and start or restart the server. A restart ensures the values are loaded during initialization.
- Verify in the server console. Query each convar using the console’s convar input or search/filter for
decay. Confirm that the displayed values match the file, especially after a host panel has applied its own defaults. - Test with a controlled base. Place a Tool Cupboard, stock it, and observe a test structure. Repeat with the cupboard empty if you are checking the difference between upkeep protection and global decay.
If your provider offers a generated configuration file, make the change in the provider’s persistent settings rather than only in an ephemeral command box. Some panels regenerate server.cfg when the server restarts.
Change decay from the console or launch arguments
Administrators can also set convars at runtime. Enter the same name-and-value pairs in the server console:

decay.scale 0
decay.upkeep falseRuntime changes can be lost on a restart unless they are written to the persistent configuration. After making a supported runtime change, use:
server.writecfgThen restart and verify the values again. A launch argument is another option when your startup script is the source of truth; use the syntax required by your server wrapper and avoid maintaining conflicting values in both launch parameters and server.cfg.
How Tool Cupboard upkeep interacts with decay
With upkeep enabled, the Tool Cupboard is both an authorization point and a maintenance store. A covered building piece does not decay while the cupboard can pay the required upkeep from its inventory. This does not mean that every nearby piece is protected indefinitely: coverage, material inventory, and the server’s current upkeep calculation all matter.
- Stock the required materials. A cupboard with no usable resources cannot continue paying.
- Check coverage. A piece outside the cupboard’s radius is not protected by that cupboard.
- Account for consumption. The cupboard spends resources over the configured upkeep period; extending the period changes the cost rate, not the need for resources.
- Expect protection to end when payment fails. Once the cupboard cannot pay, eligible structures can resume normal decay according to
decay.scale. - Understand destruction behavior.
decay.upkeep_grief_protectionlimits the post-destruction upkeep buffer; it is not a substitute for a live, stocked cupboard.
Players sometimes interpret an on-screen “base is decaying” message as proof that a convar failed. First check the cupboard’s inventory, coverage, building privilege, and the actual values reported by the console. A message can also persist briefly while the server updates state. If the message remains after a restart and a controlled test, record the Rust version and reproduce it on a test server before changing unrelated convars.
Rust’s newer player-count upkeep tax
The 2026 Breach and Clear update added an extra Tool Cupboard upkeep tax based on the number of players in a base. This is separate from simply changing the global decay multiplier. A server can therefore have decay.scale 0 while still displaying upkeep-related behavior, or have normal decay with an upkeep bill that is higher than older guides suggest.

The update introduced a Decay class of convars that can change or disable this player-count tax. The exact names and defaults can change with Rust updates, so inspect the current server convar list and the version’s changelog before adding undocumented variables to production. Do not copy bracket-style settings from an old hosting tutorial without confirming that your build exposes them.
Power Plant heavy-fuse decay settings
Power Plant heavy fuses received a population-based decay change in the October 2026 update. According to the update summary, fuses last four times longer at populations of 10 players or fewer and retain their normal lifespan at populations of 100 or more. The intermediate behavior is controlled by population scaling rather than by your building’s Tool Cupboard.
The Facepunch changelog lists these convars:

Check their live values in the console before changing them. These variables affect Power Plant fuse decay, not the health decay of player-built foundations, walls, doors, or cupboards. Keep them separate from the decay.* settings in your configuration documentation.

Older articles often list per-material variables such as decay.duration_stone and decay.duration_metal. Current Rust decay behavior is not reliably represented by those names. Treat them as legacy or version-specific until your own server’s convar list confirms that they exist and have an effect.
Some hosting guides also describe bracket variables such as block-count and cost-fraction controls. The Facepunch pages documenting the core decay settings do not establish those names as universal. If you encounter them, search for the exact convar in the running server, note its current value and description, and test it on a disposable base before deploying it to a live world. A setting that is accepted by a wrapper or plugin is not necessarily a built-in Rust convar.

Troubleshoot a decay change that does not work
The value reverts after restart
- Confirm that you edited the active
server.cfg, not a template or backup. - Check for duplicate entries; a later line or launch argument may override the first.
- Use
server.writecfgafter a runtime change, then restart. - Review the host panel’s startup variables, which may regenerate the file.
The base still decays with upkeep enabled
- Verify the Tool Cupboard contains the required resources.
- Confirm that the affected pieces are within the cupboard’s building-privilege radius.
- Read back
decay.upkeep,decay.scale, and the period value in the console. - Allow a short server-state update, then test an isolated piece rather than judging from an old damage mark.
Turning upkeep off did not make the base permanent
This is expected if decay.scale remains above zero. Upkeep controls the Tool Cupboard payment system; the global multiplier controls decay speed. For a no-decay configuration, set decay.scale 0, restart, and verify on a test structure.
A copied material-specific command is rejected
Remove the unsupported line and inspect the current convar list for names beginning with decay.. Rust updates can retire or rename variables, and a third-party plugin may have supplied a command that is not present on a vanilla server.
Validate settings before opening the server to players
- Create a small test base using the materials your players normally build with.
- Record the four core values:
decay.scale,decay.upkeep,decay.upkeep_period_minutes, anddecay.upkeep_grief_protection. - Test a stocked cupboard and confirm that covered pieces remain protected.
- Remove or exhaust upkeep materials and observe whether decay behavior matches your chosen scale.
- Restart the server and repeat the console checks to prove persistence.
- Test the exact population and event conditions that matter to your community if you changed newer player-count or Power Plant convars.
- Document the values and the Rust build in your server rules so players know whether they must maintain cupboards.
Keep a copy of the last known-good configuration. When Rust updates, compare the new convar list and changelog against that copy rather than assuming every older decay command still applies.

decay.upkeep falseThis removes the global decay effect and the upkeep payment mechanic. If you prefer players to keep using cupboards for building privilege or administration, leave decay.upkeep true and test the resulting user interface before publishing the rules.
