Use Certbot’s Nginx integration, verify that your installation has a cron job or systemd timer, test renewal with sudo certbot renew --dry-run, and add a deploy hook when Nginx must be explicitly reloaded after a certificate is renewed. The exact installation and scheduler depend on your Linux distribution and how Certbot was installed, so begin with the platform-specific directions at Certbot’s Nginx instructions.
What automatic renewal does on an Nginx server
TLS certificates are stored files that Nginx presents during an HTTPS handshake. Automatic renewal means a scheduled Certbot operation checks the certificates it manages and obtains replacements when they become eligible. The operation is separate from Nginx loading the files: after a successful renewal, the running Nginx process may need a configuration reload before it serves the new certificate.
Certbot’s User Guide says that “Most Certbot installations come with automatic renewal out of the box.” That is not proof that a particular server is configured correctly, however. Package source, operating-system defaults, and installation method determine whether the scheduler is cron or systemd. Check the actual host rather than assuming a universal timer or cron entry.
Choose how Certbot should manage Nginx
The official Nginx setup offers two different acquisition paths. Select one according to who should own the Nginx configuration.

These are alternative setup choices, not commands to run indiscriminately on the same server. If a carefully managed configuration, deployment system, or configuration-management tool owns Nginx files, the certificate-only path avoids having Certbot rewrite them. If you prefer an integrated first-time setup, the regular --nginx path can make the required edits.
Before you start
- Identify the operating system and package source. Certbot’s generated instructions vary by platform and installation method. Open the official instructions, select the operating system and Nginx, and follow the resulting installation guidance rather than copying a recipe intended for another distribution.
- Record the current Nginx ownership model. Determine whether Nginx files are edited by administrators, an automation system, or Certbot. This determines whether
certbot --nginxorcertbot certonly --nginxis appropriate. - Confirm the site is reachable in the way your challenge requires. HTTP-01 validation needs an HTTP-reachable site and access to the challenge URL. The webroot method specifically requires Nginx to serve
/.well-known/acme-challengefrom the selected webroot. A firewall, redirect policy, proxy, or virtual-host mismatch can prevent validation. - Have administrative access. The examples use
sudobecause Certbot normally reads and writes protected certificate and configuration locations. - Know how this host manages services. The reload action used after renewal must match the local service manager and deployment process. Do not assume that one reload command applies to every distribution or installation.
Step 1: Install or update Certbot using the platform instructions
Start at the Certbot instruction generator and choose the operating system and Nginx. The page supplies installation directions for that combination. This matters because the package may also install or enable the mechanism that runs renewal checks.
After installation, confirm that the command is available to the account that will perform renewals:
certbot --versionThe version output confirms that a Certbot executable is on the path; it does not prove that automatic renewal is scheduled. Keep the existing Certbot configuration if certificates have already been issued. Running a second, unrelated installation method can create multiple executables or schedulers that are difficult to audit.
Step 2: Obtain the certificate with the appropriate Nginx command

sudo certbot --nginxFollow the prompts for the domain names and the HTTPS behavior offered by the installer. Certbot obtains the certificate and modifies the relevant Nginx configuration when the transaction succeeds. Review the resulting server block and keep a record of which names and configuration files were changed.
Manage the Nginx configuration yourself
For a host where your team controls the Nginx configuration, run:

sudo certbot certonly --nginxThis obtains the certificate through the Nginx plugin but leaves installation into the Nginx configuration to you. Point the relevant Nginx directives at the certificate and private-key files created for that managed certificate, using the paths shown by Certbot on your host. Validate the Nginx configuration with the command appropriate to your installation before reloading the service.
Do not switch between these modes casually. If Certbot is allowed to edit a configuration that is also managed by another tool, later deployments can overwrite its changes. Conversely, a certificate-only setup requires your deployment process to keep the Nginx file references correct.
Step 3: Find the renewal scheduler that is actually installed
A successful first certificate does not itself prove that future renewals will run. Certbot’s setup guidance directs operators to inspect both cron locations and systemd timers:

sudo grep -R certbot /etc/crontab /etc/cron.*/* 2>/dev/null
systemctl list-timersThe first command searches the system crontab and the standard periodic cron directories for entries that invoke Certbot. The second lists systemd timers; inspect the output for the timer associated with your Certbot package. File names and timer names vary, so judge the result by the command or service it runs, not by one hard-coded name.

If neither inspection shows a renewal job, return to the platform-specific Certbot instructions and the package documentation for your installation method. Do not create a second scheduler until you understand why the supplied one is absent; duplicate jobs can attempt the same renewal concurrently and make failures harder to diagnose.
Step 4: Test renewal without replacing the live certificate
Run the official dry-run test:
sudo certbot renew --dry-runrenew is designed for unattended use. It examines the certificates managed by Certbot and attempts renewal only for those that are eligible; a run can therefore complete without changing a certificate when none is due. The --dry-run option exercises the renewal process against the test service instead of replacing the production certificate.
Read the complete output. A successful dry run shows that Certbot can discover the managed certificate, complete its validation path, and perform the relevant renewal steps. It does not by itself prove that a production Nginx worker has loaded a newly issued file, so also verify the live HTTPS site after configuring the deployment reload.
If the dry run fails, fix that failure before relying on the scheduler. Re-run the same command until it completes successfully; otherwise an enabled timer or cron job will merely repeat the same error unattended.

Step 5: Make Nginx load a renewed certificate
Renewal writes a new certificate, but a long-running Nginx process can continue using the certificate it loaded earlier. Certbot’s documentation distinguishes deploy hooks from pre- and post-hooks: a deploy hook runs after a certificate has been successfully issued or renewed. Use that hook for the action that should happen only after a new certificate exists.
Hooks can be supplied on the Certbot command line or through executable files in the renewal hook directories described in the Certbot User Guide. A command-line form has this general shape:
sudo certbot renew --deploy-hook "<your verified Nginx reload command>"The angle-bracket text above is explanatory notation, not a command to paste. Replace it with the reload command used by your service manager and deployment policy. Many systemd-based hosts use a systemd reload operation, but the correct command, permissions, and service name are host-specific. The Certbot command reference documents the --deploy-hook option.
For a persistent configuration, place an executable hook in the renewal hook directory supported by your Certbot installation. Keep the script narrowly scoped: reload Nginx only after a successful deployment, and make failures visible in the scheduler’s logs. A hook that runs on every check, including checks where no certificate changed, is less precise than a deploy hook.
Test the reload action independently before tying it to renewal. Use the service manager’s configuration-test operation first, then perform a controlled reload and confirm that Nginx remains healthy. Finally, run the dry-run with the hook configured and inspect its output. A test that renews successfully but cannot reload Nginx is not a complete deployment test.

Step 6: Verify the live HTTPS service
After the initial setup and after a controlled renewal test, visit the site over HTTPS as recommended by Certbot’s setup guidance. Confirm that:
- The expected hostname reaches the intended Nginx virtual host.
- The browser or client receives the certificate for that hostname.
- The site remains available after the Nginx reload.
- The certificate files referenced by the active Nginx configuration are the files managed by Certbot, especially when you selected
certonly.
A browser check validates the public result. It does not reveal whether two different Nginx instances, a reverse proxy, or another front end is serving the connection, so compare the observed certificate with the configuration and deployment path on the server.
How the renewal command behaves
It may do nothing on a normal run
sudo certbot renew is intended for scheduled execution. Certbot processes managed certificates that are eligible for renewal and skips certificates that are not due. “No renewal attempted” is therefore not automatically an error; inspect the command output and scheduler logs to distinguish an intentional skip from a failure.
The scheduler and the hook are separate responsibilities
The cron job or systemd timer starts Certbot. The deploy hook handles the action that must follow a successful issuance. Check both independently: a timer without a working renewal configuration cannot obtain a certificate, and a successful renewal without a reload hook may leave Nginx serving the previous certificate.
HTTP-01 and webroot problems to check
Some Nginx instructions use an HTTP-01 challenge. In that case, the certificate authority must reach the site over HTTP, and Nginx must return the challenge response at the expected path. For a webroot-based method, ensure that requests for /.well-known/acme-challenge are served from the webroot supplied to Certbot.
- Port 80 is not reachable: Check the host firewall, upstream firewall, load balancer, and DNS target. The site must be reachable through the challenge method you selected.
- The wrong virtual host answers: Verify the requested hostname, Nginx server-name matching, and the address returned by DNS.
- A redirect or access rule blocks the challenge: Ensure the challenge location remains publicly readable while validation runs. Do not assume that a general HTTPS redirect or authentication rule is harmless.
- The webroot is wrong: Confirm that the directory Certbot writes to is the directory Nginx serves for
/.well-known/acme-challenge. A valid file in a different directory will not satisfy validation.
These checks apply only when the selected challenge method requires HTTP reachability. Do not apply them as universal requirements to every Certbot plugin or deployment.

- Select the correct operating system and Nginx combination in Certbot’s instruction generator.
- Decide whether Certbot should edit Nginx (
sudo certbot --nginx) or only obtain the certificate (sudo certbot certonly --nginx). - Confirm that the domain and challenge path are reachable for the selected validation method.
- Inspect
/etc/crontab,/etc/cron.*/*, andsystemctl list-timersto identify the actual scheduler. - Run
sudo certbot renew --dry-runand resolve every reported error. - Choose a deploy hook if Nginx must reload after a successful renewal; use the command or executable hook appropriate to the local service manager.
- Test Nginx configuration and reload behavior before relying on the hook.
- Verify the public HTTPS site and the certificate served by the active Nginx instance.
