Use the operating block in the server JSON: set disableAI to true to remove AI completely, or set aiLimit to a positive number to cap how many AI entities can exist. The -aiLimit startup parameter overrides the JSON value, and both key names are case-sensitive.
Arma Reforger gives server administrators two separate controls for artificial intelligence: a switch that prevents the AI world from being initialized, and a ceiling that limits AI while leaving it available to missions. They solve different problems, so choose the control that matches the intended gameplay before editing the file.

Choose between disabling AI and limiting it
| Goal | Setting | Result | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Remove all server AI | disableAI: true |
The server skips initializing and updating the AI world and its components. | AI characters should not spawn in scenarios, including Conflict, when the setting is loaded correctly. |
| Keep AI but cap its population | aiLimit: 1, 32, or another chosen ceiling |
No system can spawn additional AI after the limit is reached. | The wiki lists -1 as the default for no limit, but documentation conflicts about zero and other negative values. |
| Override the JSON limit at launch | -aiLimit startup parameter |
The command-line value takes precedence over aiLimit in the JSON file. |
Check the service manager, script, or panel that actually starts the server; changing JSON alone will not beat an override. |
Check the server version and make a backup
Configuration labels and behavior can differ between the 1.6.x stable line and 1.7 builds. Match the Bohemia Interactive Community Wiki’s Server Config and Startup Parameters documentation to the exact branch running on your machine. The wiki records aiLimit as added in version 0.9.8.64; it gives no equivalent version note for disableAI.
- Stop the dedicated server cleanly.
- Copy the current JSON configuration to a dated backup before changing it.
- Record the launch arguments used by your service, script, container, or hosting panel.
- Make one change at a time so a failed startup can be traced to a specific edit.
Do not assume that a file named “server.json” in your working directory is the active file. The executable reads the file supplied through the -config startup parameter.

Find the active JSON file and load it with -config
Add the -config parameter to the server’s existing launch command, followed by the path to the configuration file. For example, the relevant part of a command line can look like this:
-config "server.json"
Use the actual path and filename used by your installation. If a control panel or system service starts the server, edit its startup-argument field rather than a shortcut you no longer use. After restarting, confirm in the server log that the expected configuration file was opened; otherwise, your valid edit may have no effect.

Both AI controls belong inside the top-level operating object. JSON keys are case-sensitive: use exactly disableAI and aiLimit. The value for disableAI is a JSON boolean, not a quoted word, and aiLimit is a number, not a quoted string.
The wiki’s example operating block shows fields such as lobbyPlayerSynchronise, joinQueue, and disableNavmeshStreaming; it does not show the two AI fields in that example even though the page documents them. Add the AI keys to your existing block without deleting unrelated settings.
Disable all AI
Set disableAI to true when the server should run without AI at all. The documented behavior is that the server skips initializing and updating the AI world and its components.

- Open the active file identified by
-config. - Locate the
operatingobject. Create it only if your valid configuration genuinely lacks one. - Add or change the setting to
"disableAI": true. - Save the file as valid JSON, restart the server, and load the scenario you use for testing.
- Verify that no AI entities are created. If AI still appears, follow the troubleshooting section instead of adding a second copy of the key elsewhere.
{
"operating": {
"disableAI": true
}
}
When this switch is true, changing aiLimit cannot make AI appear again; disabling the AI world is the stronger setting for that purpose.
Limit AI without removing it
Leave disableAI false (or omit it if your build defaults it to false) and set aiLimit to the maximum number of AI entities allowed. Once the ceiling is reached, no system can spawn more AI. The Server Config page lists -1 as the default, meaning no limit.
{
"operating": {
"disableAI": false,
"aiLimit": 32
}
}
Choose a number based on the scenario, player count, and hardware rather than treating a popular value as a guaranteed performance target. A cap limits the total available population; it does not promise a particular number of active enemies, a fixed frame rate, or a specific server tick rate.
Community ranges are starting points, not specifications
A hosting recommendation commonly repeated in server guides suggests the following rough starting ranges:
| Player capacity | Suggested AI range | Status |
|---|---|---|
| 16 players | 30–50 AI | Community guidance, not an official Bohemia Interactive limit or benchmark. |
| 32 players | 50–80 AI | Community guidance, not an official Bohemia Interactive limit or benchmark. |
| 64 players | 80–100 AI | Community guidance, not an official Bohemia Interactive limit or benchmark. |
No published official study establishes how many AI a particular CPU, mission, or player count can sustain. Start below the desired ceiling on a test instance, observe server behavior, and increase gradually only when the mission still plays correctly.

Understand the -aiLimit startup override
The -aiLimit startup parameter has priority over the JSON value. If the file says 32 but the process is launched with -aiLimit 10, the effective limit is 10. This is a frequent reason an administrator sees a correct JSON value but fewer AI than expected.
To apply a temporary limit without editing the file, append the parameter to the normal launch command:
-aiLimit 10
To make the JSON value effective again, remove the startup override from every layer that launches the process: shell scripts, service definitions, container arguments, scheduled tasks, or hosting-panel settings. Restart after changing the command line.
Zero and negative aiLimit values are not consistently documented
The two official wiki excerpts do not describe these edge values in the same way. The Server Config material says a negative JSON value is ignored, while the Startup Parameters material says a value less than or equal to zero disables any possible AI. The pages do not reconcile the difference, and behavior may depend on the build or on whether the value came from JSON or the command line.
| Value | Documented implication | Safe administrative interpretation |
|---|---|---|
-1 |
Listed as the JSON default for no limit; the JSON page also says a negative value is ignored. | Use it only when you have verified how your build interprets it. Do not assume the same behavior for a startup argument. |
0 |
The startup-parameter page says zero or less disables possible AI; the JSON wording does not clearly settle zero. | Test on a disposable server before using it as an “AI off” switch. Use disableAI: true when you need the unambiguous documented disable control. |
| Other negative numbers | The JSON page describes negative values as ignored; the startup page groups values less than or equal to zero as disabling AI. | Do not rely on them for production behavior without testing the exact build and launch path. |
A small test matrix
On a private test instance, keep disableAI false and try one value at a time. Record whether the scenario spawns AI, whether the server starts normally, and whether the effective limit appears in logs or observable gameplay.

Validate JSON before restarting
A correct setting in malformed JSON is still unusable. Keep the file’s existing structure and check these common errors:
- Use double quotes around property names.
- Use lowercase JSON literals
trueandfalse, without quotation marks. - Use an integer for
aiLimit, without quotation marks. - Separate properties with commas, but do not leave a trailing comma before a closing brace.
- Do not add comments; standard JSON does not accept
//or/* ... */comments. - Keep only one
operatingobject and one effective copy of each AI key.
Validate the complete file with a JSON-aware editor or validator before starting the process. If the server refuses to start after an edit, restore the backup first, then reapply the smallest possible change.

AI difficulty is not confirmed as a server-config key
No official server-config setting for AI difficulty was confirmed in the available documentation. A guide suggests creating or modifying /profile/settings/ai.json, but that instruction has no verified official reference and should be treated as unconfirmed rather than copied into a production server.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A Steam discussion indicates that difficulty is changed through a custom mission or scenario made in the editor. That is a scenario-design route, not proof of a universal dedicated-server JSON option. If difficulty is your goal, identify the mission’s supported configuration and test it separately from disableAI and aiLimit.
Do not substitute similarly named fields
Guides use both lobbyPlayerSynchronise and lobbyPlayerSync in different contexts. The wiki example uses lobbyPlayerSynchronise. These are not interchangeable AI settings. Copy field names from the documentation for your build and avoid renaming unrelated operating options while making an AI change.

Performance and gameplay trade-offs
Limiting AI can reduce server workload, which is why hosting guides present aiLimit as a performance-tuning tool. The same limit can also change the mission’s intended experience: reinforcement waves may stop, objectives may become easier, and systems that expect additional AI may behave differently. The startup-parameter documentation explicitly warns that an AI limit can save performance but can also break the experience.
- Use
disableAIfor an intentionally player-only scenario, not as a substitute for diagnosing every performance problem. - Use a positive
aiLimitwhen AI is part of the design but server capacity is constrained. - Change one limit at a time and test the busiest mission phase, not only an empty lobby.
- Keep a record of the value, scenario, player count, and build so later changes are comparable.
Troubleshoot an AI setting that appears not to work
AI still spawns with disableAI: true
- Confirm that the process was restarted; most servers do not reread the file during a running session.
- Check the command line for
-configand edit that exact file, not a template or an inactive copy. - Check capitalization:
disableAIis valid, while variants such asdisableaiordisableAiare different keys. - Validate the entire JSON file and look for duplicate
operatingobjects. - Confirm that the running executable belongs to the build whose documentation you followed.
The server uses a different limit than the JSON file
- Search the launch command and service definition for
-aiLimit; it overrides the JSON value. - Remove stale arguments from a wrapper script or hosting-panel field, then restart.
- Check that
aiLimitis a number and is located insideoperating.
Zero or negative values behave unexpectedly
- Stop using the edge value in production until you test it on the exact build.
- Use a positive limit to prove that the configuration is being read.
- Use
disableAI: truewhen the requirement is simply “no AI,” rather than depending on undocumented or conflicting zero behavior.
The scenario feels broken after lowering the limit
Restore the previous value and retest. A hard ceiling can prevent mission systems from spawning reinforcements even though the server itself is functioning normally. Treat the limit as a gameplay change as well as a performance change.
Recommended Free Tools
A safe rollout procedure
- Identify the server build and active config path.
- Back up the current JSON and launch arguments.
- Choose one objective: complete AI removal or a measurable ceiling.
- Make the smallest edit inside
operating. - Validate JSON syntax.
- Start a private test session and verify actual AI behavior.
- Test the busiest part of the intended scenario with representative players.
- Publish the change only after confirming that mission objectives and server stability remain acceptable.

AI-enabled server capped at 32
{
"operating": {

}
Temporary command-line cap
-config "server.json" -aiLimit 10
In the last example, the effective cap is 10 even if the JSON file contains 32, because the startup parameter has precedence.
Bottom line
For an unequivocal AI-free Arma Reforger server, place "disableAI": true in the active file’s operating block and restart with that file selected by -config. To retain AI while controlling load, leave disabling off and set a positive aiLimit; then inspect the launch command because -aiLimit overrides JSON. Treat zero, negative values, difficulty files, and recommendations from hosting guides as build- or scenario-dependent until you have tested them on your own server version.
