Bitdefender’s consumer documentation does not provide a setting that inventories third-party generative-AI apps, monitors their use as a category, or lets you block selected AI services. Its related controls address different problems: Advanced Threat Defense evaluates running-process behavior, Web Protection blocks malicious web destinations, and Scam Protection Pro helps identify scams.
This guide shows how to configure those documented features, how to handle a trusted program or safe site that is blocked, and how to determine whether your requirement is really AI-app governance rather than threat protection.
Start with the control you actually need
The phrase “AI app monitoring and blocking” can describe several different security goals. Bitdefender’s consumer tools cover process anomalies, dangerous web traffic, and scam content. They do not expose a catalog of generative-AI services with an allow/deny switch.

That distinction matters. A legitimate AI website could be allowed by Web Protection because it is not malicious, while a completely unrelated application could be stopped by Advanced Threat Defense because its behavior is suspicious. Neither result represents a policy decision about AI use.

Monitoring is not the same as inventory
Advanced Threat Defense monitors processes while they run, but its purpose is to correlate suspicious behavior and detect anomalies. It is not an activity report showing which employee opened an AI service, how long it was used, or what prompts were submitted. Web Protection examines destinations and pages for harmful content; it is not a named-service usage log. Scam Protection Pro and Scamio assess content that may be fraudulent rather than recording an application-usage history.
Use the feature that matches the event you need to control. If the event is “a downloaded executable behaves suspiciously,” investigate Advanced Threat Defense. If it is “a browser is redirected to a harmful address,” investigate Web Protection. If it is “a message or QR code may be a scam,” use Scam Protection Pro or Scamio. If it is “employees must not access a particular AI service,” these consumer controls do not document that policy function.
Configure Scam Protection Pro on Windows
Use this setup when your concern is phishing, fake support pages, malicious links or scam email—not restricting access to generative-AI tools.
- Open Bitdefender Total Security.
- From the dashboard, select Scam Protection Pro. You can also open the Protection area and choose Scam Protection Pro there.
- Start the setup wizard.
- Follow the on-screen instructions and enable the components you need, such as Web Scam Protection, Scam Radar and email protection.
Email protection choices
The email portion differs according to how you read mail. Browser-based Gmail or Outlook protection follows the web setup shown by the wizard. A locally installed mail client uses a separate local-protection flow. Select the path that matches your mail application rather than enabling both indiscriminately.
After setup, test each enabled component with the product’s own status indicators and a harmless test message or link. A browser extension or mail integration can have a different status from the main antivirus dashboard, so confirm that the component you intend to use is actually enabled.
What a successful setup does
Scam Protection Pro evaluates scam indicators and harmful content. It does not create a usage report for AI sites, identify every generative-AI application installed on a PC, or turn those applications on and off by category. A warning about a fraudulent link should be treated as a content-risk decision, not as evidence that the entire website or the AI service behind it is prohibited.
Set up Scam Protection Pro on Android
Android’s setup begins inside the Bitdefender Mobile Security app. The permissions requested depend on the components you choose.
- Open Mobile Security.
- Open the Scam Protection Pro dashboard.
- Choose the protections you want and proceed through the setup prompts.
- Review each Android permission request and grant only the permissions required for the selected features.
Permissions and their purposes
- Accessibility: required when you enable Web Protection. This allows the security service to inspect the browsing context for dangerous destinations.
- Notification access: used for SMS-link scanning and related notification analysis.
- Permission to inspect scam links in notifications: allows the service to check links presented through notifications.
These permissions support scam and malicious-link detection. They do not give an administrator an inventory of which AI apps an organization is using or a category-level block rule.

Android users should review the permission screen after setup and whenever a component is removed. Disabling Accessibility or notification access can stop the corresponding web or message-scanning function while leaving other Mobile Security features active. If protection appears inconsistent, check both the Bitdefender dashboard and Android’s system permission manager rather than assuming that an AI app is being selectively blocked.
Set up Scam Protection Pro on iPhone or iPad
On iOS, start from the same product family but expect different permission and platform limits.
- Open Mobile Security.
- Open Scam Protection Pro.
- To enable Web Scam Protection, accept the privacy notice and allow Bitdefender to scan internet traffic when iOS presents the request.
- If you want Calendar Invites Protection, allow calendar access when prompted.
- Complete the remaining on-screen setup for the components you selected.
SMS protection is not supported on iPads. That limitation affects scam-message coverage only; it is not an AI-app policy control on either iPhone or iPad.

Web-traffic scanning and calendar-invite analysis are separate functions with separate permissions. Revoking one permission should not be interpreted as a block on a particular browser, messaging app or AI service.
When Advanced Threat Defense blocks a trusted program
Advanced Threat Defense continuously monitors running processes, looking for anomalous behavior and correlating suspicious activity. A block therefore reflects a behavioral security decision, not the application’s category or marketing description.
Add a narrow exception
- Open Bitdefender and select Protection.
- Open Advanced Threat Defense.
- Go to Settings, then choose Manage exceptions.
- Add the verified program’s file path or folder path.
- Turn on the Advanced Threat Defense switch for that exception.
- Save the change and relaunch the program.
Before you exempt anything
- Verify the file’s publisher and location. A familiar filename in an unexpected folder can indicate malware.
- Prefer a single executable over an entire folder whenever possible.
- Do not use an exception as a way to “allow AI apps.” The documented workflow exempts a trusted program that was incorrectly blocked; it does not create an AI allowlist.
- If the alert returns after an update, recheck the new file path instead of broadly disabling protection.
Record why an exception was created, who approved it and which exact path it covers. This makes later review easier and prevents a temporary troubleshooting change from becoming a permanent blind spot. If the program has multiple helper processes, verify each one individually instead of excluding an entire installation directory by default.
After saving, relaunch the application and confirm that Advanced Threat Defense remains enabled globally. If the alert changes from a process block to a web warning, investigate the two events separately: an application can be trusted locally while one of its network destinations is harmful.

When Web Protection blocks a safe site or online application
Web Protection scans web traffic and blocks malicious URLs and pages. Bitdefender also notes that an online application can be blocked when it contacts a harmful link or IP address in the background. In that situation, the visible service may be legitimate while one of its embedded destinations is not.

Use an exception or a one-time bypass carefully
Bitdefender’s support procedure provides website-exception controls for Windows and Mac, as well as a one-time bypass option. Open the Web Protection settings, add the exact trusted site to the exception list when you need a persistent allowance, or use the one-time bypass only for a single visit. The precise labels can vary by product edition.
- Confirm the address bar shows the expected domain and uses HTTPS before bypassing.
- Investigate redirects, advertising scripts and embedded third-party content if the warning appears only on one page.
- Use the narrowest exception possible. A broad domain or folder-style rule can allow unrelated harmful content.
- Remove the exception if the site changes ownership, begins redirecting, or no longer needs access.
A Web Protection exception allows a destination that was blocked as dangerous. It does not classify that destination as an approved or prohibited generative-AI service.
For a business-critical site, test the exception with the smallest scope first and document the affected device or browser. A one-time bypass is safer for diagnosis because it does not permanently change policy. If several devices see the same warning, compare the complete URLs and redirect chains rather than adding a broad exception based only on the service’s brand name.

What Bitdefender means by “AI”
AI App anomaly detection
Bitdefender describes its “AI App anomaly detection” as “A cloud-based deep learning system for detecting anomalous and malicious application behavior.” The important words are anomalous and malicious behavior. This is detection technology used to evaluate software activity, not a user-facing dashboard for tracking how people use third-party AI applications.
Scamio and Scamio Pro
Bitdefender’s Scamio is an AI chatbot that helps assess suspicious links, messages, emails and QR codes. Scam Protection Pro’s Scamio Pro provides the same type of scam-checking assistance within eligible Bitdefender plans. Use it when you need a second opinion on a suspicious message or destination; it is not an application-access manager.
Do not confuse an AI feature inside a security product with governance of other AI products. Scamio can help a person decide whether to trust content. It does not disable the browser, messaging client or AI assistant that displayed that content, and it does not generate an organization-wide report of prompts or sessions.
Plans named in Bitdefender’s guide
Bitdefender lists Premium Security, Ultimate Security, Ultimate Security Plus and Ultimate Small Business Security as plans that include Scam Protection Pro. Availability and included features can change by region and subscription edition, so check the plan shown in your account before assuming a component is available.
A subscription upgrade can add Scam Protection Pro, but it does not turn the consumer product into an AI-app governance platform. Evaluate the capability you need first, then confirm that the plan supplies that specific protection rather than relying on the presence of the word “AI” in the product description.

Bitdefender controls versus AI-app governance
If your requirement came from a workplace policy, compare the required control with what the consumer features actually do.

If you need the right-hand column, look for an enterprise web, endpoint, network or identity-control product that explicitly advertises application discovery and policy enforcement. Do not infer that capability from a security product’s use of machine learning.
Ask prospective tools four concrete questions: Can they identify the exact service or application, can they apply rules to named users or devices, can they report attempted and successful access, and can they enforce the rule across the platforms you manage? Those questions separate app governance from a local malware or URL decision. Bitdefender’s documented consumer features answer the threat-detection questions, not all four governance questions.

Troubleshooting by symptom
“I cannot find an AI-app list”
There is no documented consumer dashboard in the features covered here that inventories generative-AI services. Confirm that your objective is not instead to block a malicious URL, investigate a suspicious process or check a scam message. If it is an organization policy, Bitdefender’s consumer setup described above is the wrong control surface.
“A legitimate desktop AI tool is blocked”
Use the Advanced Threat Defense exception path only after verifying the executable and its source. Add the narrow file or folder exception, keep Advanced Threat Defense enabled for that exception, save, and test again. If the program changes its executable after an update, reassess the new file rather than weakening protection globally.
“An AI website is blocked”
Read the Web Protection warning and inspect the full URL. The block may concern a malicious redirect or background IP rather than the service’s primary page. Use a one-time bypass only after verification; create a persistent exception only when the destination is trusted and the business need is clear.
“Scam Protection Pro asks for permissions I do not want to grant”
Return to the component selection screen and enable only the protections you need. On Android, Accessibility and notification permissions correspond to specific web and message-scanning functions. On iOS, traffic scanning and calendar access are separate choices, and SMS protection is unavailable on iPads.

That is expected. Scamio evaluates the content you submit; it does not disable the messaging, browser or AI application that displayed it. Treat the result as a warning for deciding whether to open a link, reply or provide information.

“The exception fixed one device but not another”
Exceptions are applied in the product and context where they were created. Compare the operating system, Bitdefender edition, executable path and complete URL on each device. A Windows process exception does not automatically become an Android web permission, and a website exception does not exempt a desktop process.
A practical configuration checklist
- Write down the desired outcome: malware prevention, dangerous-site blocking, scam analysis or organization-wide AI-app restrictions.
- For Windows scam protection, open Total Security and complete the Scam Protection Pro wizard.
- For Android, choose features in Mobile Security and review Accessibility and notification permissions individually.
- For iOS, approve internet-traffic scanning for Web Scam Protection and calendar access only if Calendar Invites Protection is required; remember that SMS protection is not available on iPads.
- For a trusted process blocked by Advanced Threat Defense, verify the executable and add a narrow exception through Manage exceptions.
- For a safe site blocked by Web Protection, verify the complete URL before using an exception or one-time bypass.
- Use Scamio for suspicious links, messages, emails and QR codes—not for controlling which applications people may use.
- After any exception, retest the original task and confirm that protection remains enabled for unrelated files and destinations.
- Review exceptions and mobile permissions periodically; remove entries that are no longer required.
- If the requirement is app inventory, usage reporting or category-level allow/deny enforcement, select a tool whose documentation explicitly promises those functions.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can Bitdefender block ChatGPT or another generative-AI app by name?
The documented consumer controls do not provide a category or named-service block list for third-party generative-AI apps. Web Protection may block a harmful URL, and Advanced Threat Defense may block suspicious software behavior, but neither is an AI-app policy control.
Does Advanced Threat Defense show who used an AI application?
No. It monitors running processes for anomalous behavior and correlates suspicious activity. It is not documented as a user, session, prompt or application-usage reporting system.
Why would a legitimate AI website be blocked?
The page or an embedded component may contact a malicious URL or IP address. Inspect the full warning and redirect path. Use a one-time bypass or a narrow website exception only after verifying the destination.
How do I allow a trusted desktop program blocked by Bitdefender?

What Android permissions does Scam Protection Pro need?

Is SMS protection available on an iPad?
No. Bitdefender’s iOS setup documentation states that SMS protection is not supported on iPads. Web Scam Protection and Calendar Invites Protection are separate features with their own permissions.
Does Scamio disable the app that contains a suspicious message?
No. Scamio helps assess suspicious links, messages, emails and QR codes. It can inform your decision about opening or responding to content, but it does not disable the browser, messaging app or AI service displaying it.
