To configure a DayZ server, edit serverDZ.cfg in the server’s root directory, save a valid key-value file, and restart the instance. The file controls identity, access, anti-cheat, time, login queuing and the mission map. It does not control every gameplay system: stamina, building, HUD and spawn behavior are generally in cfggameplay.json, while loot definitions and economy variables are in db/types.xml and db/globals.xml.
What serverDZ.cfg is and when changes apply
serverDZ.cfg is a plain-text configuration file read when the DayZ dedicated server starts. It is not XML and it is not a database. Each setting normally uses a name, an equals sign, a value and a semicolon, for example maxPlayers = 60;. Put the file in the server root—the directory that contains the dedicated-server executable and folders such as keys, mpmissions and profiles.
The process reads the file only during startup. Editing it while players are online does not change the running instance; stop and start or restart the server after saving. If you use a hosting control panel, its file manager may expose the same root directory under a label such as “Configuration files” or “File manager.” The exact panel labels differ, but the underlying file and restart requirement are the same.
Make a dated backup before changing several values. A backup lets you restore a known-good file if the server fails to start or unexpectedly uses defaults. Keep a second copy outside the server directory so an update or reinstall cannot overwrite it.

Open and edit the file safely
- Stop the server. A clean shutdown prevents the process or panel from overwriting your edit.
- Locate the root directory. Find
serverDZ.cfgbeside the DayZ server executable. If it is missing, check the startup command or panel for the configured profile and configuration path. - Back up the current file. Copy it as something such as
serverDZ.cfg.backup-2026-10-14. Do not leave two files with the active filename in different directories and assume the server will pick the one you edited. - Edit as plain text. Use an editor that does not add rich-text formatting or a byte-order mark. Preserve semicolons, quotation marks and the spelling of parameter names.
- Save, then restart. Watch the startup log and test a connection before announcing the change to players.
Configuration names are case-sensitive in practice because the server expects specific names. Copy a known-good spelling and change only the value you intend to change. Comments are commonly written with //, but avoid adding elaborate formatting until the server is working.
Identity, access and capacity settings
These values determine how the server appears in the browser and who can enter or administer it.

The administrator password deserves special attention. It is not a “moderator” password with limited rights: the documented use of #login grants console administration. Rotate it if it has appeared in a public log, chat message or shared control-panel account.
Security and anti-cheat controls
verifySignatures
verifySignatures controls signature checking for addon data. Strict checking requires every .pbo file, including mod files, to have a valid matching .bisign signature and for the corresponding public key to be present in the server’s keys folder.
Published configuration references disagree about accepted values. The DayZ modding wiki is commonly cited as supporting only value 2; other community documentation describes 0 as disabled, 1 as lenient and 2 as strict. A separate launch example uses 3, which does not match those descriptions. Use 2 as the widely used safe default, then confirm the accepted values for the exact server build in Bohemia Interactive’s current documentation: DayZ:Server_Configuration. Do not copy a value of 3 merely because it appears in an old example.

When strict checking rejects a mod, the usual causes are an absent key, a stale or mismatched .bisign, or a client running a different mod build. Install the mod’s server files, copy its key into the server’s keys directory, and make sure clients use the same signed release. Read the server log for the filename that failed instead of disabling verification as a first response.

Set BattlEye = 1; to keep the anti-cheat service enabled, which is the recommended operating state for a public server. If BattlEye fails to initialize, fix the service or installation problem rather than leaving anti-cheat disabled indefinitely. Explain any planned maintenance to players because a server without anti-cheat changes the trust model for everyone connected.
forceSameBuild
forceSameBuild = 1; is commonly included in working examples to require clients to run the same game build as the server. This helps prevent connection errors caused by version drift after a game update. Recheck the setting after major updates because behavior and accepted parameters can change with the dedicated-server build.
Time and persistence
DayZ’s accelerated clock is independent of the host machine’s wall clock. The following settings interact, so change them together and test a complete restart cycle.

A value such as serverTimeAcceleration = 12; appears in community examples, but it is not an official universal recommendation. A server that restarts with persistence disabled can appear to “jump backward” by design; that is expected if the configured start time is earlier than the saved time. Conversely, persistence can surprise players who expect every restart to begin at dawn. Choose one policy and communicate it in your server rules.

Login queue settings
Login queuing prevents a restart from producing a sudden frame-rate drop when many clients connect simultaneously. The server processes only a limited number of logins at once, then admits additional players as slots become available.

Do not confuse queue length with playable slots. A value of loginQueueMaxPlayers = 500; does not create 500 slots; it permits that many connection attempts to wait. If players are rejected immediately, check the queue limit, firewall, server browser visibility and the actual maxPlayers value.
Other operational parameters
The following lines frequently appear in a baseline configuration:
guaranteedUpdates = 1;requests guaranteed network updates in configurations that support the parameter.instanceId = 1;identifies the server instance used by its persistence storage. Keep it stable for an existing world; changing it can make the server look like a fresh instance.storageAutoFix = 1;enables automatic storage repair behavior where supported. Keep a backup before relying on automatic repair.
These parameters are version-sensitive. If a line is not documented for your dedicated-server build, remove it or confirm its current spelling rather than assuming an old sample remains valid.

Map selection is normally in the Missions class block at the bottom of serverDZ.cfg. The mission folder name identifies the map and scenario, for example a Chernarus or Livonia mission directory. The exact class syntax varies with the server template and installed mission files, so copy the block generated for your game build and change only the mission path.

If the named mission folder does not exist, the server may fail to start or fall back to another configuration. Verify that the directory is under mpmissions, that its case and spelling match the configuration, and that the mission files are complete. Map changes generally require a restart and can require a new persistence strategy if the world data is not compatible.
A conservative example configuration
The following is a community-style starting point, not an authoritative list of every supported parameter. Replace identity values, review each security choice and confirm disputed settings against the documentation for your build.

};Do not paste this block over a provider-generated file without checking the provider’s required sections. In particular, keep any existing network, logging or mission classes that your template includes. The sample’s acceleration, queue maximum and persistence choice are illustrative; they are not guarantees that every current build accepts the same range or class layout.
Apply and verify a change
- Change one related group at a time. For example, edit the clock settings together, but do not simultaneously change the map, mod keys and player cap while diagnosing a problem.
- Check punctuation. Every assignment should have a semicolon. String values need matching quotation marks. Braces in class blocks must open and close in the correct order.
- Save a backup and restart. Wait for the process to stop completely before starting it again.
- Read the startup log. Look for the loaded mission, BattlEye status, signature errors and warnings about unknown parameters.
- Connect as a normal player. Verify the displayed hostname, password behavior, map, time and queue. Use a separate administrator account to test
#login; never test by distributing the admin password. - Record the working revision. Keep the file and the server build together so you can reproduce the setup after an update.
Troubleshooting common failures

What does not belong in serverDZ.cfg
Do not search this file for every gameplay rule. A commonly used separation is:
cfggameplay.json: stamina, base-building behavior, HUD options and spawn-related gameplay settings.db/types.xml: item types and loot quantities.db/globals.xml: economy variables and other global values.
Those files have their own syntax and reload behavior. Editing them in serverDZ.cfg will not change the game and can make the configuration harder to troubleshoot.

Panel-managed versus self-hosted configuration
On self-hosted machines you control the filesystem, startup command, backups and log retention. A hosting panel may provide an editor, scheduled restarts and automatic backups, but it can also regenerate serverDZ.cfg from form fields. Before hand-editing a panel-managed server, determine whether the panel overwrites the file on restart and whether it exposes mod keys and signature settings.
When comparing providers, ask three concrete questions: Can you download and restore the raw serverDZ.cfg? Does the documentation explain where mod .bisign files and keys belong? Are its instructions aligned with the current official configuration reference rather than an undated community template? The answers matter more than a panel’s appearance because they determine whether you can recover from a bad update.

Version drift and the authoritative reference
DayZ server parameters can change with game and server updates. The conflicting descriptions of verifySignatures and serverTimeAcceleration demonstrate why an old example should not be treated as a specification. Check the current Bohemia Interactive reference at community.bistudio.com/wiki/DayZ:Server_Configuration whenever you upgrade, add a new parameter or see a warning about an unknown value.
Keep the exact dedicated-server version, configuration file and startup log together. That record lets you distinguish a typo from a parameter removed in a later build and makes it possible to roll back without guessing.
