To run a public Counter-Strike 2 server, install the dedicated server files with SteamCMD (app ID 730), create a Game Server Login Token (GSLT) for that app, start the binary with -dedicated and +sv_setsteamaccount, load server.cfg, and allow UDP port 27015 through your firewall and router. A server can still support LAN or direct-IP play without a token, but it will not appear in the public server browser.
What you need before installing
Counter-Strike 2 server configuration is mostly a sequence of four tasks: download the dedicated files, identify the server to Steam, provide launch and configuration settings, and make the host reachable. Decide where the process will run before downloading anything.

A computer or rented host
You can run the server on a machine at home, on a rented game-server service, or on a general-purpose VPS. The software steps are similar, but the network responsibilities differ.

For a private LAN session, a machine on the same network is sufficient. For friends connecting over the internet, choose a host with a stable public route and permission to receive UDP traffic.

Disk space and access
One installation guide estimates the downloaded server footprint at roughly 60 GB. Treat that as a planning figure rather than a guaranteed requirement: leave additional room for updates, logs and any files you create. You need permission to install SteamCMD, write to the chosen server directory and change the host firewall. On a home network, you also need administrator access to the router.
Install the dedicated server files with SteamCMD
SteamCMD is the command-line installer used to obtain the Counter-Strike 2 dedicated server. The important identifiers are the anonymous SteamCMD login and app ID 730.

- Start SteamCMD and select that directory as the installation location using SteamCMD’s current directory command.
- Log in anonymously.
- Run
app_update 730 validate. Thevalidateoption checks the downloaded files and replaces files that are missing or damaged. - Exit SteamCMD after the update completes.

quitThe commands above are SteamCMD commands, not commands typed into the Counter-Strike 2 server console. If SteamCMD reports that the app is already current, the validation still provides a useful integrity check. If the update stops partway through, confirm that the account running SteamCMD can write to the destination and that the host has enough free disk space.
Keep the installation separate
Use a dedicated directory rather than mixing the server with unrelated Steam files. This makes updates, backups and service restarts easier, and it prevents an accidental cleanup of another application from removing the server. Record the full path; you will need it when creating the launch command and locating the cfg directory.
Create a Game Server Login Token
A Game Server Login Token, commonly abbreviated GSLT, associates your server with Steam’s game-server system. Generate it from Steam’s game-server account-management page for app ID 730. Each server needs its own token.

- Open Steam’s game-server account-management page while signed in to the account that will own the token.
- Create a token for app ID
730. - Copy the token into a password manager or another protected location.
- Pass it to the server with
+sv_setsteamaccount <token>when launching.
Do not publish the token in a screenshot, repository, support post or shared configuration file. Anyone who obtains it may be able to use your server identity. If it is exposed, revoke it through Steam’s account-management page and create a replacement, then update the launch command.
When the token is required
For public listing, treat the GSLT as mandatory. Without one, the server can still work for players on the same LAN or for people who connect by its direct address, but it does not appear in the public server browser. A token therefore affects discoverability, not whether the dedicated process can start at all.
Build the launch command
Start the dedicated-server binary from the installation directory. The executable name varies by operating system, so use the binary supplied in your installation. The crucial flag is -dedicated; without it, the binary starts the game client instead of the dedicated server.
A practical launch line contains the dedicated flag, the GSLT, a starting map, an optional player limit and a server name:
<server-binary> -dedicated +sv_setsteamaccount <token> +map de_dust2 +maxplayers <number> +hostname "<server name>" +exec server.cfgReplace the bracketed values with your binary path, token, desired player limit and name. The angle-bracket values are command-line variables; do not include the brackets themselves. Keep the token out of public documentation and scripts that other users can read.

Why each option is present
-dedicated: selects dedicated-server mode.+sv_setsteamaccount: supplies the GSLT so Steam can identify the server.+map de_dust2: chooses the map loaded at startup. You can change the map name to another installed map.+maxplayers: sets the intended player capacity when supported by the current server build.+hostname: sets the name players see in listings or connection information.+exec server.cfg: loads your configuration file during startup instead of relying only on command-line options.
Put options in the same startup mechanism every time—an operating-system service, batch file, shell script or host control panel—so a restart does not silently omit the token or configuration file. If a provider supplies its own startup field, preserve the exact plus signs and hyphens.
Create and load server.cfg
Create a file named server.cfg in the server’s configuration directory, normally the cfg folder inside the installed game files. The filename must match the argument in +exec server.cfg. If you choose a different filename, change the launch argument to match it.
The supplied configuration should contain the settings you want applied on every start. Keep the file in a location you back up, and make one change at a time while testing. Exact cvar names and values can change with Counter-Strike 2 updates; consult Valve’s current server documentation for the settings you intend to use rather than copying an outdated preset wholesale.
Confirm that the file was read
- Stop the server completely.
- Make a small, identifiable change in
server.cfg, such as the server name. - Start the server with
+exec server.cfg. - Check the console output and the name shown by a local or direct connection.
- If the change is absent, verify the file path, spelling, permissions and launch line before troubleshooting the setting itself.
Do not assume that a file sitting somewhere under the installation directory is automatically loaded. The explicit +exec argument is what makes the startup behavior predictable.
Choose a tick rate carefully
The server defaults to 64 tick unless configured otherwise. A 128-tick configuration requires the launch flag -tickrate 128 and matching update-rate settings in server.cfg.

<server-binary> -dedicated -tickrate 128 +sv_setsteamaccount <token> +exec server.cfgThe flag alone is not a complete 128-tick configuration: the server’s update-rate settings must agree with it. The exact cvar values were not established here, and they should be checked against the current Valve documentation for the Counter-Strike 2 build you are running. Do not label a server “128 tick” merely because the launch line contains the flag; verify the effective settings in the running server.
When to stay at 64 tick
Leave the default in place if you want the least complicated setup, if your host does not support the required update behavior, or if your players’ connections and hardware cannot sustain the additional update workload. Tick rate is a server-wide operating choice, not a per-player preference. Changing it requires a restart so the launch option is applied.
Open the required network paths
Allow inbound UDP traffic on port 27015 for player connections. Apply the rule in every relevant layer: the operating-system firewall, the hosting provider’s network firewall and, for a home server, the router’s port-forwarding rule to the machine running CS2.

- Give the server machine a stable address on the local network, preferably through a DHCP reservation.
- Forward UDP port
27015from the router’s public interface to that local address. - Allow the same UDP port through the machine’s firewall.
- Keep outbound HTTPS available so the server can communicate with Steam.
- Test from a network outside your home, such as a mobile connection; a test from the same LAN can succeed even when internet forwarding is wrong.
Some internet connections use carrier-grade NAT or block unsolicited inbound traffic. In that situation, a router rule may not be enough. Ask the internet provider whether you receive a reachable public address, or use a host that provides inbound connectivity.
Firewall scope
Open only the port and protocol the server requires. The player-traffic rule is UDP 27015; do not broadly expose every port on the host. Keep outbound HTTPS permitted for Steam communication, and restrict administration access separately with your operating system or host controls.

Start, test and publish the server
Run the launch command and wait for the server process to finish initialization. Test in stages so you can identify whether a problem is with the process, the configuration, Steam registration or networking.
- Process test: confirm that the binary remains running and does not immediately exit. An immediate return usually indicates a bad path, missing files or a malformed option.
- Local test: connect from the same machine or LAN. This confirms that the map loads and the server accepts local traffic.
- Direct-IP test: have a player outside the LAN connect using the host’s public address and port. This tests forwarding and firewall rules.
- Browser test: search the public server browser. Public visibility depends on a valid GSLT and successful Steam communication; it is not a substitute for the direct-IP test.
- Configuration test: verify the hostname, map and player limit, then restart once to ensure they are repeatable rather than left over from a previous session.
Record the final launch line, installation path, token owner, firewall rule and router destination. That short runbook turns a later reboot or host migration into a repeatable procedure.

Troubleshooting by symptom

Updating and operating the server
Counter-Strike 2 server files change as the game is updated. Stop the running process before updating, run SteamCMD’s app_update 730 validate command, then start the server with the same launch configuration. Keep a backup of server.cfg and any scripts outside the installation directory so an update or reinstall does not remove your settings.
Protect the GSLT as you would any credential. Limit write access to the launch script, avoid placing the token in screenshots or public repositories, and revoke it if it is disclosed. Review firewall and router rules after moving the server to a new machine; a correct token cannot compensate for a host that is no longer reachable.
