To play Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition with a gamepad on a PC, configure the emulated PlayStation 2 controller in PCSX2. Open Settings > Controllers, choose SDL as the input source, select Controller Port 1, and run Automatic Mapping when your controller is recognized. If the layout is wrong or automatic mapping is unavailable, assign every control manually. On Windows, SDL Raw Input can correct scrambled or unresponsive inputs, but it requires a new manual mapping. XInput is a Windows fallback for compatible controllers; DirectInput is a last resort for older devices.

The game does not have a verified, current PCSX2-specific controller preset in the documented material, so the reliable approach is to map the standard PS2 controls and verify them before racing.

What this setup configures

Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition is a PlayStation 2 game. On a PC, PCSX2 presents the game with an emulated PS2 controller, so the important settings are in PCSX2 rather than in a separate Windows game-controller profile. The current PCSX2 controller guide documents SDL, XInput, DirectInput, controller ports, automatic mapping and manual assignment in one integrated interface: PCSX2 Controllers documentation.

You need a PCSX2 installation, a controller connected and powered on, and a copy of the game that PCSX2 can already launch. The instructions below configure input only; they do not claim a particular controller model has been tested with this title. Device behavior varies by operating system, driver and controller firmware.

Logitech G F310 Wired Gamepad Controller Console - Blue/Black | Console-like layout, 4-switch D-pad
  • With broad game support, the Logitech Gamepad F310 works with old standbys to today's biggest titles, so it's easy to set up and use with your favorite games.
  • Profiler software allows the gamepad to be programmed to perform keyboard and mouse commands for games without gamepad support.* * Requires software installation.
  • A familiar control layout that doesn't require a learning curve to be able to use, with all the same buttons as on an Xbox 360.
  • The unique floating D-pad rests on four switches-instead of a single pivot point-making it responsive to quick changes in direction.
  • The six-foot cord lets you lean back and play a comfortable distance from your PC monitor.

What you do not need

You do not need a title-specific profile, a separate LilyPad download, a paid remapping service or a special adapter if your existing controller is recognized by PCSX2. A compatible XInput pad is an optional purchase for someone who does not already own a suitable device, not a requirement for the game. No verified title-specific adapter or replacement part is required by the documented setup.

Configure Controller Port 1 in PCSX2

  1. Connect the controller first. Plug in the gamepad or pair it with the operating system, turn it on, and leave it connected while configuring PCSX2. Opening the controller page after the device is available gives the emulator a chance to enumerate it. If you are troubleshooting several pads, temporarily disconnect the others so the intended player-one device is easy to identify.
  2. Open the controller settings. In PCSX2, select Settings > Controllers. The controller page is where PCSX2 selects an input source and assigns controls.
  3. Select Controller Port 1. The ports represent the two controller sockets on the front of the original console. PCSX2 states that games almost always expect the first player on Port 1, so configure that port before touching Port 2. The port explanation is in the controller guide at pcsx2.net/docs/configuration/controllers.
  4. Choose SDL. Select SDL as the input source when it is available. PCSX2 calls SDL its preferred input source, describes it as cross-platform, and says it supports automatic mapping for most controllers.
  5. Run Automatic Mapping. Choose Automatic Mapping and select the detected controller. Accept the generated layout, then inspect the assignments rather than assuming every button is positioned as you expect. Automatic mapping is a convenience, not a title-specific profile.
  6. Map manually when necessary. If the controller is not listed, automatic mapping is unavailable, or a control is assigned incorrectly, click the on-screen control and press the physical button or move the stick that should operate it. Repeat this for the directional pad, face buttons, shoulders, Start, Select and both analog sticks.
  7. Save and test in the game. Start the game with the controller still connected. Confirm that player one responds from Port 1 before configuring another port or changing the input source.

Choose the right PCSX2 input source

PCSX2 supports several input paths. Start with SDL because it is the documented preferred option, then move to the alternatives only when your device requires it or SDL produces incorrect events.

Input source Platform support Automatic mapping Best use
SDL Cross-platform Supported for most controllers Default choice for a normally detected modern controller
SDL Raw Input Windows Not reliable; PCSX2 requires manual mapping Windows troubleshooting when SDL reports scrambled or unresponsive inputs
XInput Windows PCSX2 provides bindings that work automatically with Xbox One and other XInput-compatible controllers Windows fallback when SDL does not work with an XInput device
DirectInput Windows No automatic mapping Older or third-party devices that do not work with SDL or XInput; PCSX2 describes it as generally the least reliable option

These distinctions come from PCSX2’s controller documentation and FAQ: controller guide and PCSX2 FAQ. Selecting a source does not guarantee that every third-party pad will map correctly; verify the resulting controls.

When SDL is the right first choice

SDL is cross-platform, so the same configuration approach applies on Windows, Linux and macOS. PCSX2 says that SDL supports automatic mapping for most controllers. If the device appears and the generated assignments match the physical layout, no additional input layer is needed.

When to switch to SDL Raw Input on Windows

Use SDL Raw Input when the normal SDL path produces the wrong button order, duplicated events or controls that do not respond. Enable the SDL Raw Input option, clear the previous mapping, and assign every control manually. PCSX2 specifically warns that its automatic mapper will not work properly in this mode, so do not keep an old automatic layout and expect Raw Input to correct it.

When XInput is useful

If you are using a Windows controller that complies with XInput and SDL does not detect it correctly, select XInput and map or accept the supplied bindings. PCSX2’s FAQ says Windows users receive XInput bindings that work automatically with Xbox One and other XInput controllers. This is a Windows-only fallback, not a requirement for every controller.

Why DirectInput should be last

DirectInput can help an older or unusual Windows device that fails through SDL and XInput. PCSX2 describes DirectInput as generally the least reliable choice and notes that it lacks automatic mapping. Expect to assign controls one by one and to spend more time correcting axis or button behavior.

Map the PS2 controls to your gamepad

The PlayStation 2 manual scan for the game labels the controls as directional buttons, four face buttons, shoulder buttons, Start, Select, Analog mode and two analog sticks: Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition PS2 manual. Use those labels as the target names in PCSX2. The evidence does not establish a current, title-specific keyboard or PC-controller mapping table, so the table below describes the PS2 control names you should assign, not a claim about a special preset.

PS2 control shown by PCSX2 What to assign
Directional buttons Your controller’s D-pad directions, or another four-way pad if that is the control you intend to use
Face buttons The four right-side buttons, assigned to the corresponding PS2 face-button labels shown in PCSX2
L1 and R1 The upper left and upper right shoulder buttons
L2 and R2 The lower left and lower right shoulder buttons or triggers
Start Your controller’s Menu, Start or equivalent central button
Select Your controller’s View, Back or equivalent secondary central button
Left analog stick Horizontal and vertical axes of the left stick
Right analog stick Horizontal and vertical axes of the right stick
Analog mode The controller button you want to use for the PS2 Analog-mode function, if your device has a suitable spare button

During manual assignment, map each axis in the direction PCSX2 requests. If the interface asks for an axis movement, move only that stick in the indicated direction rather than pressing a face button. When a trigger is treated as an axis, move it through its full travel so PCSX2 records the intended control.

Be precise about axes and triggers

A stick is not one control: its horizontal and vertical axes are separate assignments. If you map only one, the other direction will remain unavailable. Move the left stick up, down, left and right only when PCSX2 requests the corresponding axis. Repeat the process for the right stick. Triggers can be exposed as axes rather than ordinary buttons; move each trigger through its full travel when PCSX2 asks for it, then release it to check that it returns to neutral.

Do not assume the lettering on a modern pad matches the labels on a PS2 pad. PCSX2’s displayed PS2 labels are the target. The physical button that you choose for each label is your decision, provided the resulting layout is comfortable and consistent.

Verify the mapping before a long play session

PCSX2’s current Qt and Big Picture interfaces do not include an input tester. The documented alternative is the PS2 Pad Test homebrew application, which displays DualShock 2 inputs as you press buttons and move sticks. PCSX2 describes this method in its controller documentation: PCSX2 controller verification instructions.

  1. Launch PS2 Pad Test through PCSX2 using the same controller source and port you configured for the game.
  2. Press every face, shoulder, Start and Select button and watch for the matching input on screen.
  3. Move each analog stick up, down, left and right. Confirm that the displayed direction follows the physical movement and returns to neutral when released.
  4. Check the D-pad and, if you mapped it, the Analog-mode control.
  5. Return to PCSX2’s controller page and correct only the controls that failed. Re-run the check before launching the game again.

This verification isolates mapping errors from game-specific behavior. It also avoids guessing when the emulator’s normal settings page cannot show live input activity. Test after changing the input source, because a mapping made for SDL should not be assumed to remain correct after switching to Raw Input, XInput or DirectInput.

Troubleshoot common controller problems

The controller does not appear in the list

  • Confirm that the controller is powered on and visible to the operating system before opening Settings > Controllers.
  • Choose SDL and reopen the device selector. SDL is PCSX2’s preferred, cross-platform input source.
  • On Windows, try XInput if the controller is XInput-compatible and SDL does not detect it correctly.
  • If the device is an older Windows pad that fails through both SDL and XInput, try DirectInput and expect to map it manually.

Automatic Mapping creates the wrong layout

Automatic mapping recognizes many common controllers, but it is not a guarantee of the physical label order. Click each incorrect assignment and press the button that should perform that PS2 function. Check both sticks as well as the face buttons; a layout can look correct while an axis is reversed or attached to the wrong stick.

Buttons are scrambled or do nothing on Windows

Switch to SDL Raw Input, clear the existing mapping and perform a complete manual assignment. Raw Input is intended for cases where normal SDL reports incorrect or unresponsive events. Do not rely on Automatic Mapping after enabling Raw Input because PCSX2 says that mapper will not work properly in this mode.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The game ignores the controller

  • Verify that the controller is assigned to Controller Port 1. PCSX2 says player one is almost always expected there.
  • Make sure the game is running after the mapping was saved, with the same input source selected.
  • Use PS2 Pad Test to determine whether the issue is the mapping itself. If the test does not show a button, fix the assignment before investigating anything in the game.
  • If one source remains unreliable, test SDL, then XInput on Windows, and use DirectInput only when the other paths fail.

Only one stick or one direction works

Re-enter manual mapping and move the requested stick in the exact direction shown by PCSX2. Analog sticks have separate horizontal and vertical axes; assigning only one axis leaves the other direction unavailable. Test all four directions with PS2 Pad Test before returning to the game.

A second controller is controlling player one

Disconnect or disable the extra device while configuring Port 1, then assign the intended player-one pad to that port. Configure Port 2 only after Port 1 works. The port numbering follows the two front controller sockets on the original PS2.

The controller works in menus but not during driving

Use PS2 Pad Test to check every control, including both analog sticks, the D-pad, shoulder buttons and Analog mode. A partial automatic layout may leave an axis or shoulder input unassigned even though menu navigation appears functional. Correct the missing PS2 control rather than replacing the entire setup blindly.

Windows, Linux and macOS considerations

Windows

Windows offers SDL, SDL Raw Input, XInput and DirectInput in the documented PCSX2 workflow. Start with SDL, use SDL Raw Input for input-order or responsiveness problems, and try XInput for a compliant XInput controller. DirectInput is the compatibility fallback with no automatic mapping.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Linux and macOS

PCSX2’s FAQ says it automatically detects and binds recognizable controllers through SDL on Linux and macOS. Select SDL, run Automatic Mapping when offered, and manually correct any controls that do not match. The same Port 1 and verification steps apply. SDL Raw Input and DirectInput are not the normal choices described for these platforms, so do not follow Windows-specific troubleshooting unless the PCSX2 interface actually offers that option.

Do not use the old LilyPad entry as a current preset

The PCSX2 Wiki page for Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition records historical Windows testing with the LilyPad 0.11.0 input plugin: PCSX2 Wiki game entry. That is legacy configuration information. It is not evidence that a current PCSX2 build needs LilyPad or includes a verified title-specific profile. PCSX2’s current FAQ explains that older plugins were merged into the emulator, which is why modern setup uses the integrated controller page rather than installing LilyPad separately.

If an old guide tells you to copy a LilyPad plug-in file, treat that as instructions for an older PCSX2 generation. Follow the current Settings > Controllers workflow instead. The game-specific wiki entry can provide historical context, but it should not be read as a guarantee that a present-day controller will map automatically.

Cost and controller choice

There is no required controller purchase if you already own a pad that PCSX2 recognizes. On Windows, an Xbox One or another XInput-compatible controller is a practical optional choice because PCSX2’s FAQ specifically describes automatic XInput bindings for those devices. SDL remains the preferred first attempt, including for many controllers that are not Xbox-branded. Buying a new pad cannot guarantee a perfect mapping; you should still inspect and test the assignments.

A concise setup checklist

  • Connect and power on the controller before opening PCSX2.
  • Open Settings > Controllers.
  • Configure Controller Port 1 for player one.
  • Select SDL and try Automatic Mapping.
  • Manually correct every face button, shoulder, directional and analog assignment that is wrong.
  • On Windows, use SDL Raw Input for scrambled or unresponsive SDL input, then clear and rebuild the mapping.
  • Try XInput for a compatible Windows controller when SDL fails; reserve DirectInput for older devices and manual setup.
  • Verify the result with PS2 Pad Test because PCSX2’s current interface has no live input tester.
  • Launch the game only after Port 1 and all required controls respond correctly.

Frequently Asked Questions

No current, verified title-specific preset is established here. Configure the standard PS2 controls in PCSX2 and verify them with PS2 Pad Test.

Which PCSX2 input source should I use first?

Start with SDL. PCSX2 calls it the preferred, cross-platform input source and supports automatic mapping for most controllers.

Why is Controller Port 1 important?

The ports represent the original PS2 controller sockets, and PCSX2 says games almost always expect player one on Port 1.

What should I do if Automatic Mapping is wrong?

Click each incorrect control and press or move the physical input that should operate it. Check both analog sticks and triggers, not only the face buttons.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When should I use SDL Raw Input?

On Windows, use it when normal SDL produces scrambled, duplicated or unresponsive inputs. Clear the old layout and map every control manually because automatic mapping does not work properly in this mode.

Is XInput required for an Xbox controller?

No. Try SDL first. If SDL does not detect an XInput-compatible Windows controller correctly, select XInput; PCSX2 provides bindings for Xbox One and other XInput devices.

Can I use DirectInput?

Yes, but treat it as a last resort for older or unusual Windows controllers. PCSX2 describes it as generally the least reliable option and says it has no automatic mapping.

How can I test the controller if PCSX2 has no input tester?

Use the PS2 Pad Test homebrew application. It displays DualShock 2 button and stick inputs, allowing you to identify mapping errors before playing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need to install the old LilyPad plugin?

No. LilyPad information on the game’s historical wiki entry is legacy material. Current PCSX2 uses its integrated controller configuration rather than requiring a separate LilyPad installation.

Will the same setup work on Linux or macOS?

PCSX2’s FAQ says recognizable controllers are automatically detected and bound through SDL on Linux and macOS. Select SDL, use Automatic Mapping when offered, and manually correct any mismatches.

The Bottom Line

For Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition on PC, configure the emulated PS2 pad in PCSX2: choose SDL, assign the player-one controller to Controller Port 1, and try Automatic Mapping. Rebuild the layout manually when needed. On Windows, use SDL Raw Input for scrambled events, XInput for a compatible fallback, and DirectInput only as a last resort. Because PCSX2’s current interface has no live input tester, confirm every button and axis with PS2 Pad Test before starting a serious race.
