On Windows, switch to Gamepad Mode in System > Character Configuration, then assign controls under System Configuration > Gamepad Settings. PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and Xbox Series X|S start in Controller Mode; Nintendo Switch 2 uses its own button labels. From there, choose the correct prompt icons, enable a virtual mouse if needed, and back up your settings with the method that matches your platform.
Know which controller menu your platform uses
Final Fantasy XIV supports both mouse-and-keyboard and controller play, but the menu wording and button symbols change by platform. The official Lodestone Game Manual lists all XInput-compliant gamepads as compatible with the Windows version. On consoles, use the platform-specific Controller Settings or Gamepad Settings label shown by your client rather than copying a PC button list.
| Platform | Initial mode | Configuration label | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows PC | Mouse-and-keyboard or gamepad, depending on your selected mode | Gamepad Mode; Gamepad Settings | The manual’s compatibility statement is specifically for XInput-compliant gamepads. |
| PlayStation 5 / PlayStation 4 | Controller Mode by default | Controller Settings or Gamepad Settings, depending on the screen | PlayStation button names and icons differ from Xbox and PC labels. |
| Xbox Series X|S | Controller Mode by default | Controller Settings or Gamepad Settings | Use Xbox trigger, bumper, and face-button terminology. |
| Nintendo Switch 2 | Controller mode | Controller or Gamepad settings shown in the Switch 2 interface | The current manual has Switch 2-specific labels; do not transfer PlayStation or PC button names directly. |
The Lodestone Game Manual landing page reports a last update of September 8, 2026 and warns that menu information can become outdated after later patches. If a label differs slightly from the path below, choose the equivalent option displayed by your version.

Before changing anything: a quick preparation check
Complete a short preflight so you do not mistake a mode or connection problem for a bad button map. Plug in or pair the controller, confirm that the platform sees it, and launch the character you intend to configure. On Windows, the documented compatibility statement applies to XInput-compliant gamepads. A device that relies on a different protocol, an adapter, or a remapping layer may not appear to FFXIV in the same way. If the game sees no input, verify the controller in Windows and in the launcher before rebuilding your in-game layout.
#1 Best Overall
- Compatible with Windows and Android.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
Keep the physical controller beside you while editing. The allocation screen identifies inputs by platform terminology, so a guide that says “R2,” “RT,” or “ZR” is not interchangeable. Note your current layout before making several changes, and create a backup before moving to another client. This gives you a known configuration to restore if a remap makes targeting or cross-hotbar access awkward.
Configure a controller on Windows PC
1. Connect a compatible gamepad and let Windows detect it
Connect the controller before launching the game when possible. For PC, the official wording is: “All XInput compliant gamepads are compatible with the game.” That statement does not guarantee compatibility for every other controller protocol, adapter, or remapping layer. If the game does not respond, first verify that Windows and the FFXIV launcher detect the device as an XInput controller.
2. Switch the character to Gamepad Mode
- Open the main menu.
- Choose System > Character Configuration.
- Use the mode toggle at the upper-left of the Character Configuration window.
- Select Gamepad Mode.
This changes the active control scheme for the character. You can return to mouse-and-keyboard control from the same toggle without deleting your controller allocations. If you switch frequently, check this control first: a correctly connected gamepad can appear unresponsive simply because the character is still in the other mode.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3. Open Gamepad Settings
- Open System > System Configuration.
- Select Gamepad Settings.
- Use Button Configuration to change the action assigned to each physical button.
Use the in-game allocation screen rather than assuming that a button shown in an online guide has the same function on your platform. Cross-hotbar combinations, target cycling, party selection, and menu commands can use different labels across controller types. Change one assignment at a time, test it in a safe area, and keep movement, camera, targeting, and hotbar access easy to reach before remapping less frequently used commands.
4. Fix an allocation screen that will not accept changes
If button allocations cannot be adjusted, the official manual suggests trying again with Enable POV unchecked in Gamepad Settings. “POV” refers to the controller’s directional input reported as a point-of-view hat. Disabling that option can allow the configuration screen to read the controls correctly on some devices. Reopen Button Configuration after changing the setting and test each input rather than assuming that a partially recognized controller is fully configured.
5. Choose the correct button-prompt icons
In System Configuration > Gamepad Settings, select the icon type that matches the symbols printed on your controller. The available choices include XInput/Xbox and PlayStation styles. Restart Final Fantasy XIV after changing the icon type; the manual states that the new prompts do not take effect until the game is restarted. Icon selection changes what the interface displays, not the underlying physical buttons or your allocations.
Configure a controller on PlayStation and Xbox
PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4
These versions start in Controller Mode. To change the active scheme, open System > Character Configuration and use the mode toggle. For assignments, open System Configuration and select the option labeled Controller Settings or Gamepad Settings, depending on the client interface. PlayStation 4 may display the Controller Settings wording in places where the PC manual says Gamepad Settings.

Use the PlayStation-specific table in the official manual for target, menu, and cross-hotbar commands. A button described as a trigger, bumper, or face button in a PC or Xbox guide may have a different name on a DualSense or DualShock controller. Verify each prompt on the controller in your hands, especially after importing a profile created on another platform.
Xbox Series X|S
Xbox also starts in Controller Mode. Use System > Character Configuration if you need to switch schemes, then open System Configuration > Controller Settings or Gamepad Settings and select Button Configuration. The Xbox layout uses the familiar LB, LT, RB, and RT labels; retain those labels when following the virtual-mouse instructions below.
Nintendo Switch 2
The current Lodestone manual includes a Switch 2 controller section with platform-specific button names. Open the mode toggle through System > Character Configuration, then use the Gamepad or Controller settings shown by the Switch 2 client. Do not map a Switch 2 button by assuming that its printed letter corresponds to the same action as the letter on an Xbox or PlayStation controller. Check the Switch 2 table in the manual before changing target, menu, or cross-hotbar actions.
Understand the standard controller layout before remapping
The general FFXIV gamepad scheme uses the left stick to move your character and the right stick to move the camera. Combat actions are arranged on cross hotbars: hold a shoulder trigger and press a D-pad or face button to reach the corresponding action set. Target cycling, party-member selection, menus, and other commands are mapped by platform.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Start with the default layout for a few minutes in a safe area. Then change only the controls that conflict with your movement, targeting, or preferred cross-hotbar grip. Because allocations are customizable, you can create a layout that fits your hand position without changing the game’s underlying action system. Test both trigger combinations and ordinary face-button presses after every major change; an assignment that feels comfortable for combat can make menus or party selection less convenient.
Use the virtual mouse for cursor-based menus
FFXIV can display an on-screen cursor controlled by the gamepad. This is useful for windows or interface elements that are easier to select with a pointer than with directional navigation. It is optional; enabling it does not replace your combat or movement layout.
- Open System > System Configuration > Gamepad Settings. On PlayStation 4, the menu is labeled Controller Settings.
- Enable Enable virtual mouse.
- Move the cursor with the right stick.
- Use the platform’s shoulder-trigger buttons for clicks.
| Platform | Left click | Right click | Enable/disable shortcut |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows | LT | RT | LB + right-thumb click |
| Xbox Series X|S | LT | RT | LB + right-thumb click |
| PlayStation 5 / PlayStation 4 | L2 | R2 | L1 + R3 |
| Nintendo Switch 2 | ZL | ZR | Press the right stick |
The shortcut only toggles the virtual-mouse function; it does not change your combat or movement allocations. If the cursor seems absent, confirm that Enable virtual mouse is checked and that you are using the shortcut for your platform.

Make the on-screen prompts match your controller
If FFXIV displays Xbox-style symbols while you are holding a PlayStation controller, open System Configuration > Gamepad Settings and select the appropriate icon type. The official guide lists XInput/Xbox and PlayStation prompt styles. Restart the game after changing this setting. Without the restart, menus may continue showing the previous symbols even though the new choice is saved. Prompt art is a display preference; it does not establish that a non-XInput PC device is compatible.
Back up settings before moving to another client or platform
FFXIV has two different backup routes, and they do not move the same data. Decide whether you are moving between Windows and Mac or moving to a console before selecting a backup method.
Launcher backup for Windows and Mac
Launcher backups work between the Windows and Mac clients. They cannot be transferred to PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, or Nintendo Switch 2. Use this route only when your destination is another supported computer client. Do not assume that a launcher backup is a universal copy of every setting.
Server backup for cross-platform moves
The in-game server backup function can transfer supported client and character settings among Windows, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Mac, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2. Use the official backup controls in the client and review the item list before relying on the transfer.
Character backup data listed by the configuration guide includes:
- Character Configuration
- HUD layout
- Hotbars and cross hotbars
- Gear sets
- Keybinds
- Log filters
- Character-specific macros
Client backup covers settings such as display and sound options, input-device settings, accessibility settings, and shared macros, subject to the guide’s stated exclusions. Environment-dependent values are not reproduced as saved values across platforms; examples include display resolution, graphics quality, and the input device itself. A backup therefore restores supported preferences, not the physical characteristics of the new screen or controller.
Safe migration procedure
- On the original client, open the official launcher or server-backup controls.
- Read the character and client categories separately so you know what will be included.
- Create the backup before changing platforms or deleting the original installation.
- Sign in on the destination platform and use the matching restore function.
- Recheck controller mode, button prompts, display settings, and any platform-specific allocations after restoration.
Allow for a local cleanup pass after restoring. Check the physical button names, prompt icon type, virtual-mouse preference, resolution, graphics quality, and input-device selection on the destination system. These checks are especially important when a profile crosses from a computer to a console or Switch 2.

Map the Command Panel to L3 or R3 in Patch 7.4
Patch 7.4 added an option to assign the Command Panel to either left thumb-click (L3) or right thumb-click (R3). This is a patch-specific customization, not a universal default.
- Open System Configuration.
- Choose Gamepad Settings (or Controller Settings).
- Open Gamepad Customization (or Controller Customization).
- Select Button Configuration.
- Assign Command Panel to L3 or R3 and confirm the change.
If your client does not show this option, verify that it is running a version containing the Patch 7.4 changes and that you are in the gamepad customization screen rather than the ordinary hotbar editor. Treat this as an additional assignment: it does not change the default cross-hotbar scheme unless you deliberately place it on a button already used for another command.

Troubleshoot the most common setup problems
The game does not respond to the controller on PC
- Confirm that Windows recognizes the device as an XInput-compliant gamepad.
- Return to System > Character Configuration and verify that Gamepad Mode is selected.
- Open System Configuration > Gamepad Settings and test the controls in Button Configuration.
- If the allocation screen will not accept inputs, try again with Enable POV unchecked.
- Disconnect competing controllers or remapping layers temporarily so the game is reading the intended device.
The buttons work but the prompts are wrong
Select the matching XInput/Xbox or PlayStation icon type in Gamepad Settings, then restart FFXIV. Prompt changes require that restart. If the symbols still look wrong, confirm that you changed the icon setting on the same client and character you are currently using.
A menu is difficult to operate with the sticks
Enable Enable virtual mouse in Gamepad Settings and use the right stick as the cursor. Apply the shortcut and click mapping for your platform rather than using another platform’s trigger names. Remember that the virtual mouse is a convenience for cursor-based interfaces, not a replacement for ordinary button configuration.
A restored profile feels different on a new platform
Check whether you used launcher backup or server backup. Launcher backups do not move to consoles or Switch 2, and server backups exclude environment-dependent values such as resolution, graphics quality, and input device. Reapply those settings locally after the transfer. Also check whether the destination uses a different platform table for button names and prompts.
The menu labels do not exactly match this guide
Use the equivalent label shown in your client. The manual uses “Gamepad” on PC and may use “Controller” on PlayStation, Xbox, or Switch 2 screens. Patches can alter wording without changing the underlying functions, so look for the mode toggle in Character Configuration and the button-allocation screen inside System Configuration.
