Vocal compression reduces the difference between louder and quieter parts of a performance by turning down signal above a threshold. The useful settings depend on the singer, recording level, performance, compressor, and sound you want—not on a preset formula. Start by identifying what needs control, then adjust the compressor while listening to the vocal and checking its gain-reduction meter.

What vocal compression changes

A compressor reduces gain when the input rises above a set level. The threshold determines where that action begins; the ratio determines how much the signal above the threshold is reduced. For example, at 4:1, each 4 dB the input rises above the threshold produces 1 dB of output rise before makeup gain. Avid explains the relationship between these controls, while PreSonus describes compression as dynamic-range reduction.

Compression can help manage isolated peaks, even out phrase levels, or create a denser vocal. It does not automatically improve every performance, and it cannot restore detail that was not captured clearly. First listen to the unprocessed take and decide whether the issue is a few loud syllables, inconsistent level across phrases, or a deliberate tonal and dynamic choice.

What each compressor control does

Threshold and ratio

Threshold is the level above which gain reduction starts. Ratio sets how strongly levels above that point are restrained. Because the recorded vocal level and performance vary, a threshold number by itself is not a meaningful target; lower it while the vocal plays until the compressor responds to the parts you intend to control.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

For a mild compressed effect, Shure gives 2:1–6:1 as a broad starting ratio range and advises adjusting the threshold to catch louder peaks. Treat that as a starting point, not a standard or guarantee of a particular sound.

Attack

Attack controls how quickly gain reduction develops after the signal crosses the threshold. A faster attack clamps down sooner; a slower attack lets more of the initial sound through. PreSonus’s explanation of compression attack covers this fast-versus-slow behavior. In practice, choose by listening: tighten the onset if peaks need control, or ease the attack if the vocal sounds constrained at the start of words.

Release

Release controls how quickly gain reduction recovers after the signal falls below the threshold. The right recovery depends on the singer’s phrasing and the intended sound. Listen for whether level returns naturally between words and phrases; recovery that sounds abrupt or sluggish can make the vocal’s movement feel unnatural. HARMAN’s Compression 101 discusses attack and release behavior, but there is no universal vocal release time established by these references.

Gain reduction and makeup gain

Gain reduction is the amount the compressor is turning down the signal. Makeup or output gain can compensate for the resulting level drop, but added loudness can make a processed signal seem better even when its tone or dynamics are not. The Audacity manual describes compressor gain and gain-reduction metering; HARMAN explains the relationship between gain reduction and output gain.

A practical workflow for compressing a vocal

  1. Listen to the unprocessed performance. Identify whether you need control over occasional peaks, more even phrase levels, or a denser sound. Do not add compression merely because the track is a vocal.
  2. Choose a moderate ratio and lower the threshold as the vocal plays. Watch for gain reduction and listen to whether it acts on the louder portions you meant to control. Shure’s 2:1–6:1 range is one broad starting point for a mild effect, not a required setting.
  3. Adjust attack for the vocal’s onset. If the first part of words or peaks is too pronounced, try a faster attack. If the vocal loses its natural onset, try a slower one. Keep the change that solves the problem without dulling important articulation.
  4. Adjust release while listening through phrases. Listen to how the level recovers between words and phrases. Change it until that movement sounds appropriate for the performance; do not rely on a fixed time without regard to the vocal.
  5. Set output level for a fair comparison. Use makeup or output gain as needed, then compare processed and unprocessed audio at similar loudness. Judge the change by control, clarity, and expression rather than by which version is louder.
  6. Recheck the vocal in the mix. A setting that seems effective in isolation may alter the vocal’s phrasing or dynamics once other instruments are present. Make the final judgment in the context where the vocal will be heard.

How much gain reduction is too much?

There is no single gain-reduction limit that fits every voice or production. Ableton’s Live 12 Reference Manual warns that reduction above roughly 6 dB may deliver the desired loudness but can significantly alter the sound and damage dynamic structure. That is a caution about possible effects, not a mandatory ceiling. If the vocal loses expression, sounds unnaturally controlled, or no longer moves convincingly with the performance, reduce the amount or reconsider how the control is being applied.

How to compare compressor settings

Compare settings on the same vocal passage at similar output loudness. Listen for four things:

These checks are more useful than assuming one compressor type or genre preset is universally best. The cited guidance explains control behavior and potential changes to dynamics; it does not establish a universal ranking of compressors or genre-specific settings.

Do you need a particular compressor?

No particular hardware unit or plugin is required for this workflow. A compressor already included in your DAW can provide the threshold, ratio, attack, release, and output-level controls needed to begin. The important work is listening to the actual performance, observing gain reduction, and comparing at a fair level.
