To make a website smaller, combine minification for text source files with HTTP compression for transfer, and optimize images using formats suited to them. They solve different problems: minification removes unnecessary characters, while compression encodes a response so the browser can reconstruct it. Which settings work best depends on your content, server, and visitors, so verify the delivered response rather than relying on a promised compression ratio.
Minification and HTTP compression do different jobs
Minification changes a text asset by removing characters that are unnecessary to its operation, such as extra whitespace or comments in CSS and JavaScript. It produces a smaller source representation. HTTP compression encodes a response body for transfer; the browser decodes it to recover the representation. You can apply both: minify a resource, then compress the resulting response. Their savings can add up, but vary by file and settings. web.dev explains text-asset encoding and provides illustrative size comparisons.
Neither technique is a substitute for media optimization. Images and other binary assets need formats appropriate to their content; applying text-oriented HTTP compression to an already-compressed file often saves little and can sometimes increase its size.
How HTTP compression negotiation works
- The client advertises what it can decode. A browser sends an
Accept-Encodingrequest header listing acceptable encodings. The exact list varies by client. See MDN’s Accept-Encoding reference. - The server selects an available encoding. If it chooses a compressed representation, it identifies that choice in the response’s
Content-Encodingheader. That header describes how the representation is encoded, not how the message travels between network hops. MDN distinguishes Content-Encoding from Transfer-Encoding. - The browser decodes the body. The content length, when supplied for an encoded response, describes the encoded body’s size, not the decoded resource’s size.
These are separate from Transfer-Encoding, which concerns hop-by-hop message delivery. For background on HTTP compression and its role, see MDN’s compression overview.

- Scope of application: The spark plug tester is universal and suitable for testing and troubleshooting small or large internal/external engines such as engines, trucks, automobiles, lawn mowers, marine engines and motorcycles. It is the preferred product in any personal or professional machinery store or automobile garage.
- About use: Just connect the tester between the spark plug and the spark plug wire, and it takes about 30 seconds for the internal combustion engine to troubleshoot. If the engine can emit spark, the tester bulb reflects the spark and lights up, so as to quickly find the fault point and bad circuit of the spark plug.
- Excellent material selection: It adopts excellent rubber and metal, high-temperature resistant wire and environmental friendly acetate plastic. It works in high and low temperature environment without impact and is durable.
- Product size: 2.28 inch metal interface, 4.44 inch shaft/lamp housing, 6.53 inch sheath/cable; The internal bulb lasts for several years and is replaced by a transparent housing.
- Service: If you have any questions about the product, please contact us in time, and we will provide you with satisfactory solutions.
Which resources should you compress?
- Prioritize text: HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and SVG commonly contain repeated patterns that make them good candidates.
- Do not assume a second compressor helps: JPEG and ZIP files are already compressed formats, so additional compression often has little benefit or can make a file larger.
- Consider file size: very small responses may not contain enough repeated data for compression to offset its overhead.
- Optimize media separately: choose suitable media formats and settings rather than expecting general HTTP compression to shrink every asset.
The response type and actual transferred size are better guides than a blanket rule. MDN’s compression guidance discusses compressible formats and negotiation.
Choosing an encoding: gzip, Brotli, and newer options
Gzip and Brotli are widely used for text responses. web.dev says Brotli can improve compression by about 15%–20% over gzip, but that is generalized guidance, not a guarantee for a particular site or file. Content, compression settings, and deployment all affect the result. web.dev’s HTML performance guidance describes the trade-offs.

MDN’s header references also list deflate, zstd, and dictionary-compressed forms dcb and dcz. Newer encodings and dictionary transport should be treated as deployment-specific choices: verify support across the browsers, origin or CDN, and caches that serve your audience, and retain an appropriate fallback. The Accept-Encoding reference lists encodings; MDN’s Compression Dictionary Transport guide covers the advanced dictionary mechanism.

For context only, web.dev’s examples at maximum compression settings report Angular 1.8.3 at 1,346 KiB uncompressed, 329 KiB with gzip, and 256 KiB with Brotli; jQuery 3.7.1 minified at 85 KiB uncompressed, 30 KiB with gzip, and 27 KiB with Brotli. Those specific examples illustrate possible differences; they do not predict the result for another asset. See the source’s text-asset examples.

Static or dynamic compression?
Pre-compress stable assets
Static compression creates encoded files during a build or deployment. Because the server does not need to compress them for each request, this can reduce request-time work and allow more intensive compression settings for stable resources. The trade-off is operational: the encoded variants must be stored, deployed, and served with correct headers.
Compress generated responses when appropriate
Dynamic compression encodes a response when a request arrives. It can serve generated or personalized content that is not practical to pre-compress, but uses server resources at request time and may add latency. A sensible starting point is to consider pre-compressed static assets and use measured, conservative settings for dynamic responses. The right balance depends on your host or CDN and workload. See web.dev’s discussion of static and dynamic compression and its guidance on resource loading and CSS minification.

Keep caches correct for negotiated responses
If a server can return different encoded representations of the same URL based on Accept-Encoding, shared caches need to know that the request header affects the response. Send Vary: Accept-Encoding so caches can keep the variants separate. Otherwise, a cache may reuse a representation in a context that did not negotiate it. MDN discusses this requirement in its compression overview.
Do not serve a pre-compressed file merely because it exists. Confirm that the client accepts its encoding, set the matching Content-Encoding, and preserve the appropriate cache variation. For dictionary-compressed responses, cache handling must also account for relevant dictionary request metadata; consult MDN’s dictionary transport guide.

How to verify what your server delivers
- Open your browser’s developer tools, select the Network panel, and request the page or asset you want to inspect.
- Check the request headers for
Accept-Encodingand the response headers forContent-Encoding. If the response is negotiated, inspectVaryas well. - Compare the transferred size with the resource’s uncompressed size. Interpret the figures in context: transfer size reflects the delivered representation, while decoded size reflects the resource after decompression.
- Repeat with clients or requests that accept different encodings. Check that caches return a compatible variant rather than reusing the wrong one.
- Measure server CPU and response timing alongside bytes saved. A smaller transfer may not be worthwhile if encoding adds excessive request-time work or latency.
Developer tools expose response headers and transfer-size information. The result to optimize is not just a compression ratio: weigh delivered bytes against CPU, latency, cache correctness, client and infrastructure support, fallback behavior, and the complexity of building and deploying variants.
