The Choir is the only Valor Mortis side quest currently reported as permanently missable. It takes place in Napoleon’s Prison during Chapter 10: Shackled, and leaving through the sewer closes the prison route. Collect both Prison Warden’s Journal pages, the Chapel Key, and the deceased-prisoners letter before entering the sewer. After escaping, post the letter on the notice board near the Burning City lantern to finish the quest.
Valor Mortis has 20 launch-campaign side quests, including six tied to trophies. Most can be completed after the story, so the safest completionist plan is to clear The Choir immediately and defer ability-gated objectives until traversal and transmutation upgrades make them accessible.
How many side quests are in Valor Mortis?
The launch campaign contains 20 side quests. Six are associated with trophies, while the remaining quests provide objectives, ambers, consumables, catalysts, or other progression rewards. Current launch-era guides from PowerPyx and iTechGuides identify The Choir as the only side quest that permanently closes after a chapter transition.

That does not mean every objective is available on the first visit. Valor Mortis uses a Metroidvania-style map: a quest can begin in one area, then send you through a locked room, a higher ledge, a poison cloud, or a transmutation barrier that cannot yet be crossed. Treat a blocked route as a reason to mark the location and return later, not as evidence that the quest has failed.

What to do before leaving any region
Use the following routine whenever a main-path objective is about to move you into a new area or chapter. It prevents the most common optional-objective failures without forcing you to finish every quest immediately.
- Search the visible side paths. Check dead ends, upper floors, caves, locked rooms that are already open, survivor encounters, notes, and item pickups. Side-quest triggers are not limited to formal quest boards.
- Record blocked routes. If a poison cloud, height gap, sealed door, or transmutation barrier stops progress, mark the location and note the ability that appears to be missing.
- Finish local evidence gathering. When a quest asks you to investigate a place, collect every document or clue in that area before taking the route that advances the chapter.
- Separate discovery from completion. Finding an NPC or starting a quest does not always mean its final objective is available. Return after unlocking the relevant traversal or transmutation ability.
- Check for a return interaction. Several objectives resolve only when you speak to the original NPC again, place an item on a notice board, open a chest, or enter a hidden room.
- Delay irreversible exits. A sewer drop, chapter transition, or other one-way route deserves a final sweep. The Choir is the confirmed case where this precaution is mandatory.
The Choir: the one permanently missable quest
The Choir occurs in Napoleon’s Prison during Chapter 10: Shackled. The critical deadline is the sewer exit. Once you leave the prison through that route, access to the prison objectives is closed, so do not drop into the sewer until all four required pieces of evidence are in your inventory.
Collect the two Prison Warden’s Journal pages
Find Prison Warden’s Journal — Part One early in the prison. Continue exploring until you locate Prison Warden’s Journal — Part Two near the Armoury Key. The two pages are separate pickups; obtaining one does not satisfy the document requirement by itself.
Take the Chapel Key
Obtain the Key to the Chapel while you still have access to the prison. If the key is not in your inventory, keep searching the prison rather than advancing toward the sewer. The chapel item is part of the pre-exit checklist, not a post-escape pickup.
Find the deceased-prisoners letter
Collect Letter to Headquarters — A List of Deceased Prisoners before leaving. This letter has a separate purpose from the journal pages: after the escape, it must be posted at the notice board to resolve the quest.

Complete the escape, then use the notice board
- Confirm that Journal — Part One, Journal — Part Two, the Chapel Key, and the deceased-prisoners letter are collected.
- Only then take the sewer exit from Napoleon’s Prison.
- After escaping, travel to the notice board near the Burning City lantern.
- Post the letter on the board. This is the interaction that completes The Choir after the prison segment.
The listed reward is the Remnant’s Return consumable and 6,000 Catalysts. Because the sewer transition is permanent for this quest, a missed document generally means loading an earlier save or replaying the relevant campaign section rather than expecting post-game cleanup to restore the prison route.
Post-game cleanup: what can wait
Most side quests support cleanup after the main story. This is particularly useful for objectives that sit behind mobility or transmutation abilities. The efficient approach is to finish what is locally available, record the blocked objective, and return when the map’s new ability opens the route.
Do not interpret an incomplete quest marker as a failure merely because its final room is inaccessible. The Emissary explicitly waits for Shield Transmutation, and An Unheard Farewell requires a later elevator route before its investigation can be completed. The Scarecrow also has a final hidden-room interaction that is easy to overlook even after its two item pickups are complete.
An Unheard Farewell: investigate the cave before reporting
An Unheard Farewell follows the Guidepost/Valley of Ashes route and tests whether you finish the local investigation before returning to the Adjutant Sous-Officier.
Open the elevator route
Progress far enough to unlock the elevator’s top level. The quest’s missing-scout evidence is not gathered from the first elevator position, so report only after the upper route is available.

Search the cave halfway up
Use the elevator route and inspect the cave halfway up the shaft. Find the missing scouts and collect the note. The note is the optional investigation step that can be skipped if you rush directly back to the Adjutant.

Return to Adjutant Sous-Officier after collecting the evidence. You can tell the truth or lie. The Sleight of Hand amber is awarded either way, but the dialogue choice changes the bonus outcome. Therefore, the choice is a role-playing and reward-outcome decision rather than a condition for receiving the amber itself.
The Emissary: return after Shield Transmutation
The Emissary can be encountered before its route is practical to complete. The poison-cloud section is intentionally delayed until you obtain Shield Transmutation at the university.
- Locate or start The Emissary when it becomes available.
- Leave the poison-cloud route alone if Shield Transmutation is not yet unlocked; continuing to force the path does not replace the required ability.
- Return after obtaining Shield Transmutation from the university.
- Use the ability to cross the poison.
- Interact with the unusual corpse.
- Defeat the miniboss that appears.
- Open the chest to obtain Perfect Copy.
Perfect Copy improves the ranks of equipped Tier 1 and Tier 2 ambers. The important completion check is the chest: crossing the poison and interacting with the corpse starts the encounter, but the reward is obtained only after the unusual-corpse miniboss is defeated and the chest is opened.
The Scarecrow: return the items, then enter the hayloft
The Scarecrow quest has a final interaction beyond returning its investigation items. Completing the first two steps does not automatically grant the quest’s reward.

Collect the medallion
Follow the path to the left of the scarecrow by the cross and pick up the medallion.
Find the drawing note
Travel to the large house near the Fields lantern. Search its upper floor for the drawing note.
Return both items to the scarecrow
Bring the medallion and drawing back to the scarecrow and complete the return interaction. If the quest still appears unresolved, do not leave the area yet.
Enter the barn hideaway
Climb into the barn’s hayloft hideaway near the big house. The echo inside grants Bountiful Harvest, which restores health when Nephtoglobin remnants are collected. The hayloft is the step most likely to be missed because it is a location discovery rather than another conversation with the scarecrow.

How to avoid failing optional objectives
When an objective is tied to a chapter location
Finish it before using the chapter’s one-way exit. The Choir is the example: Napoleon’s Prison remains usable only until the sewer transition. Treat similar escape routes with the same caution even when a quest appears to be complete.

When an objective is behind poison or a transmutation barrier
Do not spend time searching for an alternate route unless the game provides one. Mark the location, obtain the named ability, and return. The Emissary’s poison crossing is explicitly designed around Shield Transmutation.
When a quest has a document or note
Read the objective literally. A journal page, letter, and note can each be a separate requirement. For The Choir, both journal parts and the deceased-prisoners letter are required; for An Unheard Farewell, the cave note provides the evidence needed before the final report.
When the quest seems finished after returning an item
Look for a second completion condition nearby. The Scarecrow requires entering the hayloft after returning its two items. The Choir requires posting the letter after the prison escape. A return conversation or item hand-in is not always the final trigger.

- Explore each new region once. Collect nearby notes, talk to survivors, and inspect open side rooms.
- Tag ability-gated markers. Record whether the obstruction is traversal, poison, or transmutation-related.
- Complete The Choir during Chapter 10. Perform the four-item prison sweep before entering the sewer, then use the Burning City notice board after escape.
- Return for ability-gated work. Revisit The Emissary after Shield Transmutation and finish the poison route, miniboss, and chest.
- Resolve investigation chains fully. For An Unheard Farewell, reach the elevator’s upper level, search the cave and note, then report to the Adjutant.
- Check hidden vertical spaces. After returning the Scarecrow’s items, inspect the barn hayloft rather than assuming the quest has ended.
- Use post-game cleanup for the remaining quests. The launch guides report that most side quests remain available after the story, making this safer than delaying The Choir.
Rewards and objective types at a glance
The four documented quests illustrate the main kinds of optional completion checks in Valor Mortis:
- Notice-board posting: The Choir resolves when the deceased-prisoners letter is posted after the escape.
- Return dialogue: An Unheard Farewell ends with a report to the Adjutant, and truth versus lie changes the bonus outcome.
- Ability, miniboss, and chest: The Emissary requires Shield Transmutation, the unusual-corpse miniboss, and the reward chest.
- Hidden-room discovery: The Scarecrow’s Bountiful Harvest comes from the barn hayloft echo after the item return.
These patterns are useful when checking a quest log: if an item has been delivered but no reward appeared, search for a nearby board, chest, vertical room, or follow-up conversation before assuming the objective is broken.
Patch and guide-version caution
The game and its launch guides were new when these routes were documented. A later patch could change quest flags, item placement, chapter behavior, or reward handling. The strongest point of agreement among the cited launch guides is The Choir’s lockout after leaving through the sewer. If a future update changes that behavior, the in-game quest state and current patch notes should take precedence over an older route description.
