Diablo 4 Season 15: Season of Hell’s Legacy has a five-quest introductory storyline. Begin in Tarsarak, follow the three Waking Nightmare branches to defeat the echoes of Baal, Mephisto, and Diablo, collect their Soul Splinters, and finish Legacy of Hope in the Imperial Library. At the end, you choose one of the three Splinters to unlock its associated Prime Evil power.
The quests also teach the season’s Waking Nightmare activities. After the introduction, activities connected to your chosen Splinter build reputation, while War Plans provide additional modifiers and upgrades.

What you need before starting
You need access to Diablo IV seasonal content for Season 15, also called Season of Hell’s Legacy. The storyline travels through Tarsarak, the Fractured Peaks, Hawezar, and Scosglen, so your character must be able to reach those regions and enter the Waking Nightmare locations introduced by the quests.

Season 15 is built around Waking Nightmares, Soul Splinters, and Prime Evil powers. Soul Splinters function as abilities with both benefits and drawbacks, so the final choice affects how you approach the season’s progression rather than simply adding a permanent, consequence-free bonus.

The order is sequential: complete each chapter, claim its Splinter, and return to the storyline until all three Splinters are assembled for the finale.
1. Complete Refuge From The Memories
- Start in Tarsarak. Enter Kuhuthi’s Tavern and investigate the cloaked stranger.
- Defeat the demons. Hostile demons appear during the investigation. Clear the encounter so the conversation can continue.
- Speak with Deckard Cain. After the fight, talk to Cain.
- Meet Cain at the Imperial Library. Travel to the library and speak with him there to advance to The Horadrim’s Fate.
This opening chapter establishes the central mystery and moves the questline from Tarsarak to the Imperial Library. It does not award one of the three named Splinters; those come from the following Nightmare branches.

2. Complete The Horadrim’s Fate and claim Destruction
Find Tal Rasha in the Fractured Peaks
Meet Deckard Cain at the Imperial Library, then travel to the Fractured Peaks to search for Tal Rasha. Defeat Tal Rasha when you find him. His defeat opens the Waking Nightmare tied to Diablo II’s Worldstone Keep.
Clear the Worldstone Keep Waking Nightmare
- Enter the Diablo II Worldstone Keep Waking Nightmare.
- Defeat the Ancients inside the activity.
- Pursue the Echo of Baal.
- Defeat Echo of Baal.
- Claim the Splinter of Destruction.
The Baal branch is the first of the three major Nightmare branches. Its identifying combination is Fractured Peaks, Worldstone Keep, Echo of Baal, and Destruction.

3. Complete The Burning Shepherd and claim Hatred
Open the Durance of Hate route
Return to Cain, then travel to Hawezar to find Sankekur. Defeat Sankekur to open the Durance of Hate Waking Nightmare.
Assemble Khalim’s Will in Travincal
- Enter Travincal.
- Collect all four components of Khalim’s Will.
- Use the completed components to open the entrance to the Durance.
- Advance to Durance Level 3.
- Defeat Echo of Mephisto.
- Collect the Splinter of Hatred from Sankekur.
The four components are a required progression step, not optional collectibles. If the Durance entrance remains closed, check that all four parts of Khalim’s Will have been collected and used at the entrance.
This branch is identified by Hawezar, Durance of Hate, Echo of Mephisto, and the Hatred Splinter.
4. Complete The Brother’s Keeper and claim Terror
Reach Aidan in Scosglen
Travel to the Strand in Scosglen and find Aidan. Defeat him to gain access to the Diablo Labyrinth Waking Nightmare.
Handle Diablo’s invulnerability mechanic
- Enter the Diablo Labyrinth Waking Nightmare.
- Fight Diablo until he becomes invulnerable.
- Destroy the Portals of Darkness whenever Diablo is invulnerable.
- Resume damaging Diablo after the portals are destroyed.
- Defeat Echo of Diablo.
- Speak with Aidan.
- Collect the Splinter of Terror.
The Portals of Darkness are the key mechanic in this encounter. Continuing to attack Diablo while he is invulnerable will not progress the fight; switch your attention to the portals, then return to the boss.

5. Finish Legacy of Hope and unlock a Prime Evil Power
- Return to the Imperial Library. Bring the Splinter of Terror from the Diablo branch. The other two Splinters should already be in your possession from the preceding quests.
- Place the final Splinter. Put the Terror Splinter beside the Destruction and Hatred Splinters at the designated location.
- Speak with Deckard Cain. His conversation advances the finale.
- Choose one Splinter. Select Destruction, Hatred, or Terror.
Choosing a Splinter unlocks that Splinter’s associated Prime Evil power and completes the introductory seasonal questline. You receive all three Splinters during the storyline, but the final empowerment choice is one of the three.

Each branch follows the same broad pattern—regional encounter, Waking Nightmare, echo boss, and Splinter—but the destination mechanics differ. Worldstone Keep requires the Ancients and a pursuit of Baal; Durance requires Khalim’s Will and a route to Level 3; the Diablo Labyrinth requires destroying Portals of Darkness during Diablo’s invulnerability phase.
What rewards the questline gives you
Immediate quest rewards
- Experience and gold from completing the quests and their combat objectives.
- The Splinter of Destruction from Echo of Baal.
- The Splinter of Hatred from the Mephisto branch.
- The Splinter of Terror from Echo of Diablo.
System unlock
Completing Legacy of Hope unlocks the Prime Evil Powers system. Your final Splinter choice determines which Prime Evil power you can bear at the conclusion of the introductory line.
Seasonal progression after the finale
The questline is an introduction, not the end of Season 15 progression. Continue activities associated with your chosen Splinter to build reputation. War Plans then provide additional modifiers and upgrades as that progression develops.

Blizzard’s 2026 season overview also describes seasonal rewards connected to the Season of Hell’s Legacy Reliquary. The Splinter powers themselves have both benefits and drawbacks, so read the effect of each available choice before confirming it.

The storyline gives you three named options:
- Destruction: the power associated with Baal’s Splinter and the Worldstone Keep branch.
- Hatred: the power associated with Mephisto’s Splinter and the Durance of Hate branch.
- Terror: the power associated with Diablo’s Splinter and the Diablo Labyrinth branch.
There is no published claim that one option is universally best. Compare the benefit and drawback shown for each Prime Evil power against your character’s build and the activities you expect to run. Because later reputation and War Plan progression follows activities tied to the selected Splinter, choose the effect you are most comfortable using rather than selecting solely by the boss name.
Troubleshooting the questline
The next quest is not appearing
- Confirm the preceding quest is fully complete, including its conversation and item pickup.
- Return to the named NPC or location from the previous objective before traveling elsewhere.
- For the opening chapter, verify that you investigated the stranger in Kuhuthi’s Tavern, defeated the demons, spoke with Cain, and met him at the Imperial Library.
The Durance of Hate entrance will not open
Revisit Travincal and verify that all four components of Khalim’s Will are collected. Use the completed set at the entrance, then proceed toward Level 3.
Diablo cannot be damaged
This is the encounter’s stated progression mechanic. When Diablo becomes invulnerable, destroy every Portals of Darkness objective required by the fight. Damage resumes after the portals are dealt with.
A Splinter is missing after a boss fight
Check the battlefield and objective area for the item pickup, then verify that the echo boss was actually defeated. The branch rewards are Destruction from Baal, Hatred from Mephisto, and Terror from Diablo.
The final choice is unclear
At the Imperial Library, place the final Terror Splinter beside the other two and speak with Cain. The choice is between the three named Splinters, and it unlocks the corresponding Prime Evil power.
Season 15 completion checklist
- Start Refuge From The Memories in Tarsarak.

The published quest breakdown identifies five main quests, while the seasonal system continues beyond them through Splinter reputation, War Plans, Prime Evil powers, and Reliquary rewards.
