To complete Dressmaker’s Burlap Challenge, finish the first three commissions to unlock off-the-rack construction, then make three different off-the-rack dresses whose every fabric piece is burlap. Accessories are allowed, but their prices count toward each garment’s cost. Cut and sew accurately so the dresses retain as much sale value as possible.
Burlap is free, which makes the challenge useful when cash is tight, but its Brown, Uncomfortable +50 and Patterned +10 tags bring penalties to many other style tags. The winning approach is therefore controlled design: choose patterns with room for profitable accessories, satisfy the burlap-only fabric rule, and check the live requirement bars whenever you are making a normal commission rather than a challenge dress.
What the Burlap Challenge requires
The challenge combines an unlock condition with a production condition. You cannot begin by opening the off-the-rack catalogue. First complete the game’s first three commissions. Once off-the-rack construction is available, produce three unique dresses. Every fabric piece in each of those dresses must be burlap. “Unique” means you should not submit the same design repeatedly; vary the pattern, silhouette or finishing choices so the game records separate designs.

The fabric restriction applies to the garment pieces, not to decorations. Lace, piping, brooches, jewels, bows and buttons can be added in any combination, provided you can pay for them. Accessories do not replace burlap as a fabric, and they do not invalidate the challenge. They do, however, increase the dress’s recorded cost, so an expensive decoration can reduce or eliminate the profit from an otherwise inexpensive build.

What is not required
- You do not need to use burlap for accessories, trims or every visual element.
- You do not need to complete ordinary commissions with an all-burlap construction; those jobs follow their own requirement bars.
- You do not need to chase the most expensive possible design. A high-quality, sensibly accessorized dress is safer than a costly one that sells for less than its inputs.
Unlock off-the-rack construction first
- Accept and complete the first commission offered by the game.
- Complete the second commission, checking its requirement indicators before cutting fabric.
- Finish the third commission and return to the construction options.
- Open the off-the-rack area after the third completion. If it is still unavailable, verify that all three jobs were actually turned in and accepted as complete rather than merely started.
The first three commissions are a gate, not part of the three-dress count. The challenge count begins when off-the-rack production is unlocked. Commission objectives can request a colour, a fabric share, particular style tags, a number of accessories, trim, or a quality level. Those requirements are independent of the later challenge rule, so read the current brief every time instead of assuming a previous commission’s solution still works.
Understand burlap before choosing a design
Burlap costs 0 gold per metre, according to iTechGuides Team’s 2026 guide. That zero material price is the reason a simple off-the-rack garment can provide emergency cash. Free fabric does not mean free production: accessories still cost money, and labour and workmanship influence the finished value.

The broad penalties are the central trade-off. Burlap can be excellent for a target that values Brown, Uncomfortable or Patterned, yet it can make a dress miss several other style thresholds at once. For the challenge itself, the objective is to sell three valid, unique dresses; for a commission, the objective is to satisfy the brief. These are different optimization problems.

Choose patterns that leave room for value
Patterns with many accessory-placement opportunities are recommended. Princess or Square Bodice patterns paired with Princess or Circle Skirts are practical starting points, and longer sleeves give you additional visible areas to finish. The point is not that one pattern is universally best; it is that a base with several placement points lets you improve appearance and sale value without changing the required fabric.
How to select the first build
- Pick a bodice and skirt combination that you can cut accurately. A theoretically valuable pattern is a poor choice if its pieces are difficult for you to place or sew.
- Prefer a silhouette with enough surfaces for restrained decoration. This gives you options when the first accessory does not add enough value.
- Use a different silhouette or finishing arrangement on later dresses so each submission is clearly distinct.
When a simpler pattern is better
If your gold reserve is nearly empty, a simple pattern with fewer pieces lowers the chance of workmanship mistakes and avoids tempting you to buy unnecessary decorations. Because burlap itself is free, the main financial risk is paying for accessories that the final sale does not recover. Start lean, then add one item at a time while watching the projected result.
Step-by-step: make each challenge dress
- Open an off-the-rack project. Confirm that you are creating a retail garment rather than accepting a commission. The challenge is tracked through off-the-rack construction.
- Select a pattern. Use a Princess or Square Bodice, a Princess or Circle Skirt, or another pattern you can execute cleanly. Note the accessory placement available before committing.
- Assign burlap to every fabric piece. Check the material selector for the bodice, skirt, sleeves and any other cut piece. A single non-burlap fabric can break the fabric-only condition even if the finished dress looks mostly burlap.
- Cut with precision. Align pieces and follow the cutting interaction carefully. Workmanship contributes to the finished value, so rushing to save time can cost more at sale.
- Sew every seam accurately. Complete the construction without avoidable mistakes. The material is free, but poor quality can reduce the payout enough to erase the benefit of free fabric.
- Review the unfinished garment. Look for missing pieces or accidental material changes before buying decorations. Correcting the base design is cheaper than discovering an invalid dress after spending on accessories.
- Add accessories selectively. Lace, piping, brooches, jewels, bows and buttons are legal. Start with an item that supports the visual direction, then compare its cost with the expected sale return. Do not assume that filling every placement produces the best profit.
- Finish and inspect the quality result. A clean cut-and-sew result protects the labour component of the sale value. If the game reports a quality problem, fix the construction before adding more expensive decoration.
- Sell the completed dress. Record which pattern and accessory arrangement you used so the next off-the-rack project is visibly different.
- Repeat with two new designs. Change the pattern, silhouette or accessory layout rather than cloning the first dress. Keep burlap as the only fabric in each one.
Build accessories around a profit calculation
Accessories are the main controllable expense in a burlap build. Since the fabric consumes no gold, every paid item should have a reason: it may improve the garment’s prestige, strengthen a useful style tag, or raise the sale value enough to cover itself. The game includes accessory cost in the dress’s cost, so a visually impressive result can still be a poor cash recovery tool.

A practical spending sequence
- Make the base dress and note the projected or eventual value without decoration.
- Add the least expensive accessory that fits the design.
- Check whether the expected sale increase is larger than the added cost.
- Continue only while the next item improves the result enough to justify its price.
- Stop when an item is purely cosmetic and the return no longer supports it.
This sequence is especially important when using jewels or multiple layers of trim. A cheaper lace, piping detail or bow can provide enough visual distinction to make the design unique without consuming the budget needed for the other two dresses.

The challenge rewards completion, but sale value determines whether the exercise helps your finances. Material and labour, quality, and prestige are the major contributors to sale value. With burlap priced at zero, labour and quality become the parts you can most directly protect.
Cutting checklist
- Confirm that every required piece is assigned burlap before cutting.
- Place the pattern pieces carefully so edges and shapes are not compromised.
- Do not treat the free material as disposable; a failed cut can still waste time and lower quality.
Sewing checklist
- Use the game’s sewing interaction deliberately rather than rushing through it.
- Check the finished quality indicator before purchasing premium accessories.
- If a mistake lowers quality, correct the garment first; decoration cannot reliably compensate for poor construction.
Prestige can matter to the final number, but there is no universal prestige threshold or guaranteed payout for a particular pattern. Treat any projected sale as an estimate and keep accessory spending below the amount you can afford to lose.

Challenge dresses versus ordinary commissions
The burlap-only rule applies to the challenge dresses. A normal commission may require a particular colour, a minimum share of one fabric, a style-tag combination, an accessory count, trim, or a quality rating. In those cases, read the requirement bars before choosing materials.
When all-burlap works for a commission
Use burlap alone only when its Brown, Uncomfortable +50 and Patterned +10 effects support the active brief and the remaining penalties do not push another required bar below its threshold. A commission that asks for an uncomfortable or patterned result may benefit from burlap’s tags.
When to mix materials
If the brief needs a colour or style that burlap undermines, add complementary materials where the requirement allows it. The community guidance describes the challenge as a resource-and-requirements puzzle, not a rule that every garment in the game must be made entirely from burlap. Older examples such as full-burlap “Tomb Raider” or “Not Haughty” solutions are build-specific; the current in-game brief takes precedence.

Use burlap as an emergency cash tool
When you are out of gold, a basic burlap off-the-rack dress can create a path back into production because its fabric cost is zero. This is a recovery method, not a guaranteed best late-game return. The payout still depends on the quality of the cut and sewing, the labour involved, the design’s material contribution and its prestige, while any accessories reduce the margin through their purchase cost.
Low-cash recovery plan
- Choose a simple pattern you can complete accurately.
- Assign burlap to every fabric piece and buy no accessory unless it is essential to make the design distinct.
- Finish the garment with careful cutting and sewing.
- Sell it, then use the recovered gold to fund the next project or a commission requirement.
- Only move to more elaborate decoration after you have a cash buffer.
This approach protects liquidity. It also avoids the common mistake of spending the money saved on free fabric immediately on accessories whose sale return is uncertain.
Troubleshoot failed or weak results

Following this order turns the challenge into a controlled production exercise: unlock the feature, use free burlap for the required fabric, spend only where an accessory earns its place, and let workmanship protect the sale value.
