To complete Astarion’s companion quest, The Pale Elf, keep him recruited, advance his personal storyline, enter Cazador Szarr’s dungeon beneath Szarr Palace, and survive the ritual confrontation. The decisive moment comes after Cazador is defeated: you can help Astarion perform the Rite of Ascension, persuade him to stop, or refuse to help. Your choice determines whether he becomes a Vampire Ascendant, remains a free vampire spawn, or may leave the party.

The fight has an urgent mechanic when Astarion is active: Cazador can bind him to the ritual, giving the party three turns to free him with Help or interrupt the ritual by killing another spawn. The second option stops the ritual but removes Astarion’s opportunity to ascend in that encounter. The prisoners’ fate is a separate decision if Astarion does not ascend.

At a glance: the complete route

  1. Recruit Astarion and keep progressing his companion storyline, The Pale Elf, through the acts.
  2. Reach Szarr Palace and descend into Cazador’s dungeon.
  3. Obtain and use the Szarr Family Ring to open the main crypt gate.
  4. Explore the prison area if you want its story context, then follow the open route to the Grand Chamber.
  5. Before entering the confrontation, make a manual save and decide whether Astarion will be in the active party.
  6. If Cazador binds Astarion during the ritual, free him within three turns with Help or kill another spawn to interrupt the rite.
  7. Defeat Cazador and choose whether to support Astarion’s ascension, persuade him to stop, or refuse assistance.
  8. If Astarion remains a spawn, resolve the prisoners separately: they can be freed, killed, or left imprisoned, depending on the dialogue outcome.

What The Pale Elf covers

The Pale Elf is Astarion’s companion quest. It follows his history and his relationship with Cazador Szarr, the vampire who controlled him. The quest spans the game rather than appearing as one short objective, so your journal can look different from another player’s. Story decisions change the wording and order of objectives; do not treat every journal entry shown in a guide as universal.

The finale is the confrontation with Cazador in the dungeon beneath Szarr Palace. The location is the important endpoint, but the quest is not complete merely because you reach the palace. The ritual and Astarion’s post-fight decision determine the major outcomes.

Keep Astarion available for the finale

Astarion must still be recruited if you want to resolve his quest personally. If he is not in your camp or party, the game may present a different state of the storyline. Before traveling to Szarr Palace, confirm that he is available and speak with him so you understand which dialogue options are being offered.

Expect a spoiler-heavy quest

This route reveals Astarion’s history, Cazador’s ritual, and the fate of the imprisoned spawn. The instructions below intentionally explain the major choices and consequences rather than providing a spoiler-free route.

Entering Cazador’s dungeon

Explore Szarr Palace and descend to the dungeon. The critical route eventually leads to the Grand Chamber, where Cazador is waiting. There is also a prison area containing captives connected to the staff used to control the dungeon. You can investigate that area for context, but it is not necessary to confuse optional exploration with the route to the boss chamber.

Use the Szarr Family Ring at the crypt gate

The main crypt gate requires the Szarr Family Ring. If the gate does not open, check that the ring is in the party’s inventory and that you are interacting with the correct entrance. The ring requirement is part of the dungeon’s intended progression; repeatedly trying to lockpick the gate will not replace it.

Understand the prison area

The prisoners’ cells cannot simply be lockpicked. The staff found in the dungeon is relevant to deciding what happens to them after the confrontation. Treat the prison as a story and choice area rather than a normal locked-room puzzle: the captives’ final outcome is determined in the post-Cazador sequence.

Follow the open route to the Grand Chamber

After the crypt gate, continue through the dungeon toward the Grand Chamber. The route from the prison area to the chamber is unlocked. Make a manual save before entering the chamber, especially if you want to compare Astarion’s possible endings or revisit the prisoners’ scene.

Preparing for the ritual confrontation

The most important preparation is understanding the ritual’s countdown. The fight is not only a normal battle against Cazador. When Astarion is in the active party, Cazador may subdue and bind him on the ritual star. Once that happens, the party has three turns to change the situation.

Choose who enters the chamber

Bringing Astarion makes the confrontation personal and enables the ascension decision after the fight, but it also exposes him to the ritual’s capture mechanic. Leaving him out avoids that immediate binding scenario, though it changes how the scene and available choices play out. There is no universally correct party choice; decide whether your priority is rescuing him during the ritual or seeing his personal confrontation directly.

Save before initiating the encounter

Create a manual save immediately before the fight. The three-turn limit and the later dialogue can produce consequences you may not expect, and a save lets you retry without replaying the entire palace section. A save before the chamber is more useful than relying only on an automatic checkpoint because it preserves your inventory, party arrangement, and dialogue setup.

Plan for the three-turn window

If Astarion is bound, treat the countdown as the first objective. Do not spend the opening turns on unrelated targets while he remains on the ritual star. Your two documented ways to interrupt the situation are:

  • Use Help on Astarion. A party member can free him directly. This preserves the possibility of discussing ascension after Cazador is defeated.
  • Kill one of the other vampire spawn. Removing a spawn interrupts the ritual. It is a valid emergency option, but it is not consequence-free: Astarion loses the opportunity to ascend in that encounter.

The second approach is therefore a tactical trade-off, not a shortcut. It can prevent the ritual from completing, yet it permanently changes the choice available to Astarion after the fight.

Handling Cazador’s ritual mechanics

Why freeing Astarion matters

The ritual uses the imprisoned spawn and souls as part of its intended sacrifice. The game describes the cost as 7,000 souls; this is a fictional count used to communicate the scale of Cazador’s plan, not a real-world statistic. If Astarion is captured, the ritual is progressing while the party fights, so the rescue decision has priority over ordinary damage optimization.

When killing a spawn is the right choice

Killing another spawn is the fallback when reaching Astarion with Help is not possible within the three-turn window. Choose it knowingly if you want to stop the ritual even though Astarion will not be able to ascend during that confrontation. Do not assume you can interrupt the rite this way and later restore the same ascension option; the documented consequence is that the opportunity is removed for that encounter.

Do not assume every persuasion result is guaranteed

The exact persuasion checks, approval thresholds, and conditions can vary with party and relationship states. The available evidence does not establish one universal check value or a guaranteed result for every playthrough. Make a save before the post-fight conversation and read the dialogue carefully rather than relying on a promised number from a generic checklist.

After Cazador is defeated: choose Astarion’s fate

Defeating Cazador opens the central decision in The Pale Elf. In plain terms, you can help Astarion complete the Rite of Ascension, persuade him not to perform it, or refuse to assist. These options are not cosmetic dialogue variations: they change Astarion’s status and can change whether he remains with the party.

Decision Astarion’s outcome Prisoners
Help with the Rite of Ascension Becomes a Vampire Ascendant. The participating spawn and imprisoned souls are sacrificed as part of the ritual.
Persuade him not to perform it Remains a vampire spawn, free of Cazador. You receive a separate choice over the prisoners’ fate.
Refuse assistance He can permanently leave the party in the documented branch. They can remain locked up in that branch.

Help Astarion ascend

Supporting the rite makes Astarion a Vampire Ascendant. The ritual’s participating spawn and the imprisoned souls are sacrificed. This is the transformation route: choose it if your character accepts the cost in exchange for Astarion’s new status and the power associated with completing Cazador’s design.

Because this outcome consumes the souls involved in the ritual, it also closes the route in which the prisoners are released. Make sure that is the result you want before selecting the assistance dialogue.

Persuade Astarion to stop

If you persuade him not to continue, Astarion remains a vampire spawn but is free of Cazador. This preserves his place in the party and leaves the prisoners’ fate as a separate decision in the scene.

The game can present different dialogue checks depending on your choices, approval, and relationship state. Since no single check value is established for every configuration, use the exact options shown in your dialogue rather than following a supposedly universal threshold.

Refuse to help

Refusing assistance is distinct from persuading Astarion to stop. In the documented branch, Astarion can leave the party permanently. The prisoners can also be left locked up in that branch. Select this option only if losing Astarion and leaving the captives imprisoned are acceptable consequences for your playthrough.

Decide what happens to the prisoners

When Astarion does not ascend, his status and the prisoners’ outcome are separate decisions. The scene can allow the spawn to be freed, killed, or left imprisoned, depending on the dialogue outcome.

Free the spawn

Freeing them releases the captives from Cazador’s control. In the described branch, the freed spawn head toward the Underdark. This is the outcome to choose if your priority is ending the imprisonment without asking Astarion to complete the rite.

Kill the spawn

Killing them ends their immediate captivity but is a different moral and narrative result from freeing them. It also should not be confused with killing one spawn during the fight: the combat interruption changes Astarion’s ascension opportunity, while the post-fight decision determines the prisoners’ final fate.

Leave them imprisoned

Leaving the captives in their cells preserves their imprisonment. This can occur in the refusal branch and is the least liberating outcome for the prisoners, even though Cazador himself has been defeated.

Which ending should you choose?

Your decision can be reduced to two questions: what should happen to Astarion, and what should happen to the captives?

  • You want the power-focused transformation: help with the Rite of Ascension. Astarion becomes a Vampire Ascendant, but the ritual sacrifices the participating spawn and imprisoned souls.
  • You want Astarion free without the ritual: persuade him to stop. He remains a vampire spawn, and you then decide whether to free, kill, or leave the prisoners.
  • You reject helping him and accept a party loss: refuse assistance. Astarion may leave permanently, and the prisoners may remain locked up in that branch.

There is no neutral outcome that grants ascension while also preserving the ritual’s victims. The ascension choice and the prisoners’ fate are linked when the rite is completed, but they are separate when Astarion is persuaded not to ascend.

Troubleshooting common problems

The crypt gate will not open

Verify that the Szarr Family Ring is in the active party’s inventory and that you are using it at the main crypt gate. The prison cells and the crypt entrance are different parts of the dungeon, so solving one does not automatically open the other.

Astarion is stuck on the ritual star

Count the turns from the moment he is bound. You have three turns to use Help on him or kill another spawn. If you spend those turns attacking unrelated targets, the ritual can continue. If reaching him is impossible, killing a spawn interrupts the ritual but removes his ascension opportunity for that encounter.

I killed a spawn and cannot find the ascension choice

That is the documented consequence of using the spawn-kill interruption. The ritual stops, but Astarion cannot ascend in that encounter. Reload the pre-fight save if you intended to preserve the ascension option.

I refused to help and Astarion disappeared

Refusing assistance can make him leave the party permanently in the documented branch. Reload the save before the post-fight dialogue if you want to attempt persuasion or assistance instead.

I expected to lockpick the prisoners’ cells

The cells cannot simply be lockpicked. Continue through the scene and use the staff and dialogue decisions to determine their fate after Cazador’s defeat.

My journal objectives do not match a guide

The quest journal can change with story decisions. Use the quest name, the Szarr Palace destination, and the current dialogue state as your reliable markers rather than expecting every objective line to match another playthrough.

Completion checklist

  • Astarion is recruited and his quest is listed as The Pale Elf.
  • You have reached Szarr Palace and entered the dungeon.
  • The Szarr Family Ring has opened the main crypt gate.
  • You have investigated the prison area as much as you want before the final confrontation.
  • A manual save exists before entering the Grand Chamber.
  • If Astarion was captured, you handled the three-turn countdown with Help or a deliberate spawn interruption.
  • Cazador is defeated.
  • You selected Astarion’s ending: ascension, persuasion, or refusal.
  • If he did not ascend, you separately resolved the prisoners’ fate.

Completing these steps resolves the major arc of The Pale Elf: Cazador is confronted, Astarion’s future is chosen, and the imprisoned spawn are either sacrificed, freed, killed, or left in their cells according to your decisions.
