Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
To compile NGINX on a Linux VPS, install a compiler and the development libraries required by your chosen features, download and verify a pinned official source release, run ./configure with explicit paths and modules, compile with make, install with sudo make install, and then create distribution-appropriate service supervision. Test the installed binary and configuration before opening the service to production traffic.
This route is worthwhile when you need a module, build option, patched dependency, or reproducible build that your distribution package does not provide. It also makes you responsible for recording every build input, applying updates, and retaining a rollback path.

Decide whether a source build is justified
A source build gives you control over NGINX modules, compiler options, installation paths, and dependency versions. That control is useful for a custom or third-party module, a feature omitted from a distribution package, a controlled security-patch workflow, or an environment that must reproduce the same binary from recorded inputs.
Official distribution packages take the opposite approach: the repository supplies a tested integration with the operating system, service manager, filesystem layout, and update tools. They reduce the work required to receive updates and remove old builds. If you do not need a custom module or build option, compare that maintenance advantage with the flexibility of compiling before committing to a source installation.

| Decision area | Source compilation | Official package |
|---|---|---|
| Modules and build choices | Choose official and third-party modules, installation paths, and compiler settings during configuration. | Use the modules and defaults selected by the distribution or package maintainer. |
| Updates | You must monitor NGINX and dependency advisories, rebuild, test, and deploy each update. | Repository metadata and the package manager provide the normal update path. |
| Rollback | Requires retained archives, build records, and a deliberate way to switch the service to an earlier installation. | Package-manager versions and distribution integration generally make version changes simpler. |
| Auditability | Can be highly reproducible when source checksums, configure arguments, toolchain versions, and paths are recorded. | Relies on the distribution’s package build and signing process. |
| Filesystem and service integration | You select the prefix, binary, configuration, PID, and log locations and must create or adapt service supervision. | The package normally supplies expected directories, defaults, and service integration. |
| Dependency maintenance | You must provide compatible compiler, PCRE or PCRE2, zlib, OpenSSL, and other development inputs for the selected features. | The distribution resolves and updates package dependencies. |
There is no universal performance improvement to assume from compiling NGINX yourself. A custom build can solve a feature or policy requirement, but the build method alone does not establish a throughput gain.
Prepare the VPS and define a build policy
Use a supported operating-system image
Start with a supported Linux release, a user with sudo access, and enough free storage for the source archive, unpacked tree, compiler output, logs, and at least one retained build for rollback. The exact amount of CPU, memory, compile time, and traffic capacity depends on the VPS and workload; authoritative NGINX guidance does not publish a universal sizing figure for these values.

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallKeep source trees and build notes outside the live configuration directory. A practical layout is /usr/local/src for archives and unpacked sources, a dedicated installation prefix such as /usr/local/nginx, and a versioned staging prefix for future builds.
Choose the operating model before compiling
- Decide whether NGINX will be the only installation on the host. A package-managed service and a source-built service must not compete for the same ports, PID file, configuration, or unit name.
- Choose whether the binary will run with the distribution’s service manager, another supervisor, or a manually controlled process. Production systems need explicit start, reload, stop, restart, and failure behavior.
- Write down the reason for the custom build and the modules it requires. This prevents a future rebuild from silently dropping a feature.
Install the compiler and feature dependencies
NGINX’s build prerequisites include a GNU C compiler and Make. Add development headers or source trees only for features you plan to enable. PCRE or PCRE2 supplies regular-expression support; zlib is used for compression-related integration; and OpenSSL is required for an HTTPS build using the HTTP SSL module.
Package names vary by distribution release. Confirm the names against the target VPS before installing them, especially on a release that has moved between PCRE versions or changed its OpenSSL package.
Debian or Ubuntu example
sudo apt update
sudo apt install build-essential libpcre2-dev zlib1g-dev libssl-dev
build-essential supplies the compiler, linker, Make, and common build tools. The other packages provide development files for the corresponding features. If the target release uses a different PCRE development package, use the package that its NGINX build documentation identifies.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
RHEL-family example
sudo dnf groupinstall "Development Tools"
sudo dnf install pcre2-devel zlib-devel openssl-devel
On an older release the package manager may be named yum. Check the release’s repositories and package names rather than copying a command intended for another version.
When to use dependency source trees
The NGINX configure system can be pointed at dependency source trees with options such as --with-pcre and --with-zlib. This is useful when the build policy requires a specific dependency source version or a dependency not supplied by the operating system. Keep each dependency’s exact version and checksum with the NGINX build record. Do not mix an unrecorded source tree with a supposedly reproducible build.

Download and verify a pinned NGINX release
Select a specific release from the official NGINX source distribution rather than using an unpinned “latest” file in a production procedure. Preserve the archive, its published checksum or signature material, and the verification result with the build notes.
- Create a controlled source directory and change into it:
sudo install -d -o "$USER" -g "$USER" /usr/local/src cd /usr/local/src - Obtain the release archive and the matching verification material from the official NGINX release channel. Keep the exact filename; the commands below use
nginx-VERSION.tar.gzas a naming pattern, not a literal release. - Verify the archive before unpacking it. For a published SHA-256 value, compare the digest with the value from the same release record:
sha256sum nginx-VERSION.tar.gzFor a published OpenPGP signature, verify the signature with the trusted release key and the matching archive:
DriversCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?PerformanceWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They SpreadDriversOutdated Drivers Are Slowing You DownSpecial offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.gpg --verify nginx-VERSION.tar.gz.asc nginx-VERSION.tar.gz - Record the exact NGINX version, archive checksum, signature-verification result, and dependency versions. A successful digest check proves that the file matches the published value; it does not by itself explain whether the signing key was trusted.
- Unpack the verified archive and enter its directory:
tar -xzf nginx-VERSION.tar.gz cd nginx-VERSION
Do not replace the pinned archive with a different file after recording the checksum. If you change versions, create a new build record.
Plan the installation paths and modules
Before configuring, run:
./configure --help
The help output is tied to the source tree you are building and is the authoritative list of options for that release. The configure script determines installation paths, compiler settings, connection-processing choices, and enabled modules, then creates the Makefile that make uses.
Important path options
--prefixsets the installation prefix and defaults to/usr/local/nginx.--sbin-pathsets the installed NGINX executable path.--conf-pathsets the main configuration file path.--pid-pathsets where the master process writes its PID file. A runtime location such as/run/nginx.pidmust be writable by the process and represented correctly in service supervision.
Choose paths that clearly distinguish this installation from a distribution package. The service file, automation, monitoring, and operational runbooks must use the same paths.
Feature options
--with-http_ssl_moduleenables HTTPS support in the HTTP subsystem and requires a compatible OpenSSL development environment.--with-http_v2_moduleenables HTTP/2 support for releases where that option is available. Confirm the option in./configure --helpand verify the resulting build before enabling HTTP/2 in a live configuration.--with-streamenables the stream subsystem for TCP and UDP proxying.- Dynamic mail modules and
--add-dynamic-module=/path/to/moduleare available in the forms documented for the source release. A dynamic module must be built for the same NGINX version and compatible build options as the binary that loads it. --with-pcreand--with-zlibcan point to dependency source trees when you deliberately build those dependencies with NGINX. Otherwise, use the development packages detected by the configure script.
Enable only what the workload requires. Extra modules increase the set of code and dependencies you must track, test, and update.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsRun configure with an explicit, recorded command
The following pattern demonstrates separate paths, HTTPS, HTTP/2, and dependency source trees. Replace the example versions and paths with real values from the VPS; do not copy the placeholder directories or enable modules solely because they appear in the example.
./configure
--prefix=/usr/local/nginx
--sbin-path=/usr/local/nginx/sbin/nginx
--conf-path=/usr/local/nginx/conf/nginx.conf
--pid-path=/run/nginx.pid
--with-http_ssl_module
--with-http_v2_module
--with-pcre=/usr/local/src/pcre2-X.Y
--with-zlib=/usr/local/src/zlib-X.Y
Save the complete command in version control or an immutable build record. Include the source version, compiler and linker versions, dependency versions, operating-system release, and the date of the build.

A successful configure run reports its checks and generates the Makefile. If it fails, read the diagnostic message, identify the missing header, library, compiler feature, or incompatible source tree, install or select the matching dependency, and run configure again. Do not proceed to make after a failed configuration.
Compile and install NGINX
Compile as the normal build user
Run the compilation from the unpacked source directory as the non-root build user wherever possible. The configure documentation describes the sequence directly: after configuration, NGINX is compiled and installed using make.
make -j"$(getconf _NPROCESSORS_ONLN)"
The parallel-job expression uses the number of processors reported by the VPS. It is a convenience, not an NGINX requirement. Reduce the job count, for example with make -j2, if the VPS runs out of memory or becomes unresponsive during compilation.
Install into the selected prefix
sudo make install
Only the filesystem-writing step normally needs elevated privileges. Preserve the configure output and build log so a later rebuild can be compared with this one. Do not delete the source tree or archive until the installed binary has passed its tests and you have stored the rollback material.
Verify the binary, paths, and configuration before starting traffic
Inspect the build identity
/usr/local/nginx/sbin/nginx -V
The version and build output shows the compiled version and configure arguments. Confirm that the executable path, prefix, configuration path, dependency choices, and required modules match the build record. This check is especially important when more than one NGINX installation exists on the host.
Test the intended configuration
sudo /usr/local/nginx/sbin/nginx -t
-c /usr/local/nginx/conf/nginx.conf
A successful syntax test is necessary but not sufficient. Before starting, confirm that the PID directory, log directories, document root, certificate and key paths, include files, and listening ports exist and have suitable ownership and permissions. The test can also reveal an unreadable certificate, missing include, invalid directive, or port conflict.
Start only after the test succeeds
sudo /usr/local/nginx/sbin/nginx
This is the basic start command documented for an installed source build. For production, use a service manager or supervisor so that starts, reloads, stops, crashes, and boot-time activation are explicit rather than dependent on an administrator’s shell.
Add service supervision without losing control of the custom paths
The exact service unit differs by Linux distribution and by the paths selected during configuration. First check the output of nginx -V and the configured --conf-path; then write a unit that refers to those paths instead of assuming a package layout.

Operate, update, and roll back the build
Keep a complete build record
- Exact NGINX source version and archive checksum.
- Signature-verification result and the key-trust decision, when signatures are used.
- Operating-system release and architecture.
- Compiler, linker, Make, and other toolchain versions.
- PCRE or PCRE2, zlib, OpenSSL, and other dependency versions.
- The complete
./configurecommand and generated configure summary. - Installation prefix, executable path, configuration path, PID path, log paths, and service-unit name.
- Enabled static and dynamic modules, plus the source and version of every third-party module.
Build updates beside the live installation
For an update, obtain and verify the new source release, build it in a new source and staging location, and run configuration and smoke tests before changing the service target. Installing every release directly over the active tree makes it harder to identify which files belong to which build and complicates rollback.
A versioned prefix such as /opt/nginx/1.XX.Y lets you retain the previous binary while testing the next one. If you use a stable symlink, switch it only after validation and ensure the service’s ExecStart, PID path, and configuration path resolve to the intended version. Keep the previous prefix until the new release has survived the operational checks required by your change policy.
Monitor security dependencies
Source compilation can incorporate current NGINX and dependency security patches, but it does not apply them automatically. Track NGINX and OpenSSL advisories, decide whether a rebuild is required, and record the resulting change. A source build that is never rebuilt becomes a maintenance liability even when its original configuration was correct.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshoot common failures
Configure reports a missing header or library
Install the development package for the feature named in the error, or point the option at a complete and compatible dependency source tree. Re-run ./configure --help and the configure command after correcting the dependency. Do not solve a missing development file by copying a random library into the source directory; that hides the dependency from future rebuilds.
Configure accepts the build, but a required module is absent
Inspect nginx -V and compare its configure arguments with the recorded command. A module omitted from ./configure is not added later by editing nginx.conf. Rebuild with the required option, or build the module dynamically in the form supported by that NGINX release.

Make exhausts VPS memory
Lower the parallel job count, close unrelated workloads, or schedule the build during a maintenance window. The number of jobs controls compiler concurrency; it does not change the resulting NGINX feature set.

What you take on when you compile NGINX yourself
The installation sequence is straightforward; the continuing responsibility is the important distinction. You choose and verify the source, dependencies, compiler settings, modules, filesystem paths, and service integration. Every later security update requires the same discipline: reproduce the inputs, build beside the running version, test the binary and configuration, deploy deliberately, and preserve a rollback target.

Frequently Asked Questions
How can I tell which configuration file a source-built NGINX uses?
Run the exact installed executable with -V and inspect its configure arguments for --conf-path. Use that absolute path in configuration tests and service-unit commands.
Can I compile NGINX without installing PCRE, zlib, or OpenSSL?
Only if you omit features that require them. HTTPS with --with-http_ssl_module needs OpenSSL development support, and the configure checks will report missing dependencies for enabled features.
Should I run make as root?
Run the build as the normal build user and reserve sudo for make install and service-management operations. This limits the impact of a build error and keeps source-tree ownership predictable.
