The dependable way to compare broadband is to check what reaches your address, choose a speed that fits the household, then compare guaranteed performance and the total contract cost—not the headline monthly price. Check connection technology, upload as well as download speed, minimum-term and exit conditions, scheduled price rises, service remedies and switching rules before you order.

Start with availability at your exact address

Broadband choices are address-specific. Enter your full postcode and address into Ofcom’s broadband checker and choosing guide before comparing prices. The checker shows which networks and technologies can actually serve the property; an advertised package may not be orderable on your street.

Record every technology offered at the address:

  • Full fibre (FTTP): fibre runs to the premises and usually offers higher, more consistent speeds than part-fibre services.
  • Part fibre (FTTC): fibre reaches a street cabinet, with the final copper section affecting speed and reliability.
  • Cable: a separate wired network whose availability and performance depend on local build-out.
  • Fixed wireless or 5G: radio access that can be useful where wired networks are limited; speed and reliability vary with location, signal and congestion.
  • Satellite: a wider-coverage alternative for hard-to-reach premises, with different latency and usage characteristics from fixed lines.

Ofcom notes that wireless and satellite services can be alternatives where wired choices are scarce. Do not assume that a “fibre” label means full fibre: ask whether the connection is FTTP or FTTC and keep that detail in your comparison sheet.

Choose a speed for the household, not the advert

Ofcom uses broad indicative bands:

Band Download range Typical fit described by Ofcom
Standard Up to 30 Mbit/s Basic browsing, email and standard-definition video
Superfast 30–300 Mbit/s Many everyday uses, including home working, video calls and streaming
Ultrafast 300 Mbit/s or more Several simultaneous users, heavy streaming, gaming or large downloads

These are guidance categories, not a prescription. Count people and concurrent activities instead of selecting the largest number. A household with one light user may gain little from an ultrafast tier, while several people on video calls, cloud backups, 4K streams and game downloads at the same time may value the extra capacity.

Include upload speed

Download speed affects receiving web pages, video and files. Upload speed matters for sending large files, cloud backups, live streaming, video calls and working with remote systems. Two packages with the same download tier can feel different if one has a much lower upload rate, so record both figures.

Allow for the home network

The package speed is measured at the service connection; Wi‑Fi conditions, distance from the router, walls, device age and local interference can reduce the speed experienced in a room. Treat an advertised tier as a ceiling for the access line, not a guarantee that every device will reach it wirelessly.

Compare realistic and guaranteed performance

Providers should present more than a single headline number. Ofcom’s guidance says fixed-broadband information should explain minimum, normally available, maximum and advertised download and upload speeds, with estimates for busy periods. For homes, the cited busy-time window is 8–10pm.

TP-Link AC1200 WiFi Router Dual Band Wireless Internet Router (Archer A54) | 4 x 10/100 Mbps Fast Ethernet Ports, EasyMesh Compatible, Support Guest WiFi, Access Point Mode, IPv6 & Parental Controls
  • Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
  • Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
  • Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
  • Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
  • Advertised speed: the tier name or headline rate used in marketing.
  • Busy-time estimate: the expected performance during the 8–10pm period, when networks are often most heavily used.
  • Minimum guaranteed speed: the personalised floor supplied for your line. Ofcom states: “Your provider should always give you a minimum guaranteed speed for your broadband service.”
  • Normally available and maximum speeds: useful context for the range you might see, but not substitutes for the minimum guarantee.
  • Upload figures: capture the same set of estimates for uploads where supplied.

Compare the guaranteed figure with your needs and with other deals at the same address. A lower headline tier with a stronger guarantee can be a safer choice than a faster-sounding tier whose busy-time estimate is weak.

How to test after installation

Wi‑Fi can make a service appear slower than the access line. For the most accurate test, Ofcom recommends connecting a computer or tablet to the router with an Ethernet cable and then running the provider’s or an accredited speed test. Test at different times, including 8–10pm, and keep dated results. A wired test measures the connection more reliably; it does not increase the service speed.

Calculate the whole contract cost

Compare the pounds you will pay over the minimum term, not merely the introductory monthly figure. Write down each price stage and every one-off charge before doing the arithmetic.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Cost item What to record How it changes the comparison
Initial monthly charge Amount and number of months at that rate Do not assume a promotion lasts the full term
Later monthly charge Any scheduled increase, its amount and effective date Apply it to every remaining month
Activation or installation One-off fee, including engineer or delivery charges Add to the contract total
Equipment or other fees Router, replacement, non-return or optional-service charges Include only charges that can apply to your order, but do not omit disclosed mandatory fees
Early termination Formula, remaining months and any notice requirement Determines the cost of leaving before the minimum term

Use this formula: total contract cost = sum of each monthly price multiplied by the months it applies, plus one-off charges. Then divide by the number of months if you want an average monthly figure for an apples-to-apples comparison. Keep the original totals as well; an average can hide a large payment at the start or end.

Worked calculation

Suppose Deal A costs £25 for 12 months, £31 for the next 12 months and £10 to install. Its 24-month total is (12 × £25) + (12 × £31) + £10 = £682, or £28.42 per month when averaged across the term. Deal B at £29 for 24 months with free installation totals £696. Deal A is cheaper overall despite the higher second-year price, but only if both deals provide comparable speed, guarantee and service. Replace these illustrative numbers with the exact figures in each provider’s contract summary.

Read the minimum term, renewal and exit rules

Ofcom says most broadband contracts run for 18 or 24 months, and its consumer checklist says residential and small-business contracts should be no longer than 24 months. Confirm the exact minimum term on the order summary, along with what happens when it ends.

  • Minimum term: the period during which cancelling can trigger an early-termination charge.
  • Early-termination charge (ETC): check the calculation, whether discounts are removed and whether equipment must be returned.
  • Notice period: find out how much notice is needed at the end of the term or for a move.
  • Renewal conditions: establish whether the service rolls onto a standard rate, renews for another fixed term or requires a new agreement.
  • Moving home: ask whether the contract can transfer, and what happens if the provider cannot serve the new address.

Online, telephone and doorstep sign-ups generally have a 14-day cancellation period under Ofcom’s choosing guide. That cooling-off right might not apply to an in-store sign-up, and starting service during the period can affect what you owe for service already supplied. Check the contract and your circumstances rather than relying on a generic assumption.

Understand scheduled price rises and your rights

Separate a rise you agreed to at sign-up from an increase imposed later. Ofcom’s contracts guidance says a rise written into the deal should be shown clearly before you agree, in pounds and pence, with the date it takes effect. Put that amount into the whole-contract calculation.

If a provider raises the price beyond what the contract specified, it must give at least one month’s notice and a penalty-free right to leave. An increase that was clearly agreed in the original contract does not automatically create the same right to cancel without an ETC. Read the wording for the exact amount, timing and affected services.

The government’s Telecoms Consumer Charter also sets expectations for clear contract information and commitments concerning legacy inflation-linked increases. Use the signed contract and pre-contract summary as the controlling documents for your deal.

Compare service quality and remedies

Price and speed do not describe the whole service. Add customer support, fault handling and compensation to your comparison notes:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • How can you report a fault, and is support available at the times you need it?
  • Does the provider publish repair targets or automatic compensation arrangements?
  • Is there a clear process for challenging a speed that falls below the guarantee?
  • What happens if the network is unavailable for an extended period?

Full fibre generally offers faster and more reliable performance than part fibre, according to Ofcom, but reliability still depends on the local network and installation. Fixed-wireless and 5G performance can vary with signal and congestion. Consider the technology alongside the provider’s remedy process, not as a standalone quality score.

Speed complaints and the 30-day remedy

If your measured speed is below what was promised, contact the provider, give the test details and ask it to investigate. Under Ofcom’s Broadband Speeds Code of Practice, a covered provider whose network-side fault is not fixed within 30 days must allow you to leave without an early-exit fee. Ofcom’s retrieved list includes BT, EE, NOW Broadband, Plusnet, Sky, TalkTalk, Utility Warehouse, Virgin Media and Zen Internet; participation can change, so confirm that the code covers your specific contract before relying on this remedy. The code does not mean every Wi‑Fi result qualifies: use an Ethernet-connected test and follow the provider’s troubleshooting steps.

A practical comparison procedure

  1. Check the address: run Ofcom’s checker and at least one provider availability check; note every technology offered.
  2. Describe usage: list users and the busiest simultaneous activities, including upload-heavy work.
  3. Set a performance floor: choose the minimum guaranteed download and upload speeds that meet that usage, then compare busy-time estimates.
  4. Collect contract figures: copy each monthly stage, price-rise date, setup fee, minimum term, ETC and renewal condition.
  5. Calculate totals: apply the formula above and produce an average monthly figure only after recording the true total.
  6. Check remedies: read support, repair, compensation and speed-code terms; verify current participation where relevant.
  7. Check eligibility: ask about a social tariff if anyone in the household receives qualifying benefits.
  8. Order only after reviewing the summary: confirm the address, technology, speed guarantee and all charges match your notes.

Social tariffs and lower-cost options

People receiving certain benefits, including Universal Credit or Pension Credit, might qualify for a social tariff. Ofcom describes these plans as having no mid-contract price rises. Eligibility, speed and availability depend on the provider and your circumstances, so ask the provider directly and compare the tariff’s guarantee and term with standard offers. Do not assume a social tariff is available at every address or that it includes the same equipment and calling features.

Switching without an avoidable bill

Ofcom says the new provider can manage a switch through One Touch Switch. Your existing provider should send information about consequences such as an early-termination charge and whether equipment must be returned. Read that message before the new service starts, especially if you are still inside the minimum term or have bundled telephone services.

Keep the old connection active until the new line works if the providers’ instructions allow it, and record the agreed activation date. Return loaned equipment using the specified method and retain proof of postage. Check the final bill for overlapping service, ETCs and credits.

Interpreting Ofcom’s market-price figure

Ofcom’s Pricing and consumer engagement report, published 26 February 2026 using CPI-adjusted September 2025 data, found an average £6.84-per-month differential for superfast fixed-broadband and fixed-voice bundles. Ofcom presents this as one indication of the potential benefit when an out-of-contract customer re-engages with the market; an individual saving can be higher or lower. It is not a quote for a broadband-only service or a promise of what switching will save today. The same analysis reported £4.17 for standard bundles and £7.94 for ultrafast bundles, with the same category and date limits.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Common comparison mistakes

  • Choosing by headline speed alone: ignore the minimum guarantee, busy-time estimate or upload rate.
  • Comparing introductory prices: overlook the second-year rate or a scheduled rise.
  • Ignoring the address: assume a provider’s national advert applies to your premises.
  • Forgetting one-off costs: leave installation, activation or equipment charges out of the total.
  • Overlooking the minimum term: discover an ETC only after deciding to move or switch.
  • Blaming the line for Wi‑Fi: rely on a wireless test instead of an Ethernet-connected measurement.
  • Assuming every speed complaint qualifies for a fee-free exit: fail to check code participation, fault type and the 30-day condition.
  • Treating a social tariff as universal: overlook provider-specific eligibility and service limits.

Final decision checklist

  • The deal is available at your exact address and its technology is identified.
  • The household’s simultaneous uses fit the chosen tier.
  • Download and upload advertised, busy-time and minimum-guaranteed figures are recorded.
  • Every monthly price, scheduled increase and one-off charge is included in the total.
  • The minimum term, renewal rate, notice period and ETC are understood.
  • Price-rise wording states the amount in pounds and pence and the effective date.
  • Support, repair, compensation and speed-remedy terms are acceptable.
  • Cooling-off, social-tariff and switching conditions have been checked for your circumstances.
  • You have saved the pre-contract summary and know what equipment must be returned.
