The reliable way to judge a TV deal is to compare the exact model and screen size, calculate the complete delivered price, and check that price against recent history at several retailers. A large “was/now” percentage is only a claim until those checks support it. Energy information, delivery terms, returns and warranty can also change which offer is the better buy.

Start with the exact television, not the headline description

Television ranges often contain several sizes and regional or retailer-specific variants. A family name such as a manufacturer’s 4K smart-TV series is not enough for a fair comparison. Record the full model code shown on each listing and match the screen size character for character. UK energy-information guidance identifies the model number as part of the product information buyers should be given: GOV.UK energy-labelling guidance.

Build a product identity record

  • Copy the complete model number, including letters, numbers and suffixes.
  • Record the diagonal screen size and, where shown, the regional or tuner variant.
  • Note included equipment that could alter value, such as a stand, remote, wall-mount hardware or a bundled accessory.
  • Save the product-page URL and the date and time you checked it.

If one listing omits the model code, treat it as unverified rather than assuming that a similar photograph or series name represents the same television. A different size can have a different panel, processor, energy label and price even when the family branding looks identical.

Also check whether a retailer has created a special bundle or an exclusive suffix. Two pages can use the same marketing name while one includes an accessory or a different regional configuration. Such an offer may still be good value, but it is not a clean price comparison until you account for what is included.

Calculate the price you will actually pay

Use the final mandatory checkout cost, not the large number displayed beside the product photograph. The Competition and Markets Authority’s price-transparency summary says: “Prices must be clear, complete and accurate.” Its guidance explains that unavoidable charges should not be hidden until late in the purchase process: CMA price-transparency summary.

Separate unavoidable charges from optional extras

Write down the television price, mandatory delivery, required installation or recycling charge, and any other fee that must be paid to complete the order. Keep optional services—such as premium delivery times, wall mounting or an extended protection plan—in a separate line. This prevents an attractive base price from being compared with another retailer’s price that already includes a service.

Where tax treatment or membership pricing differs, compare the amount available to you without assuming that a promotional membership will continue indefinitely. If a code, voucher or payment condition is required, record the condition beside the price rather than treating the reduction as unconditional. A price available only after joining a paid programme should be shown as a conditional price, alongside the ordinary price you would pay without that programme.

Use a simple comparison sheet

  • Exact product: model code and screen size.
  • Advertised price: the figure shown before checkout.
  • Mandatory charges: delivery and other unavoidable fees.
  • Total payable: the amount due for the base purchase.
  • Optional extras: services or accessories you may choose separately.
  • Conditions: membership, voucher, payment or collection requirements.
  • Timing: the date and time the figures were captured.

Do not rank an offer until every retailer is represented by the same set of figures. A cheaper headline can become more expensive after delivery, while a slightly higher price may include a service you would otherwise buy. If delivery depends on postcode, enter your destination before recording the total. If collection is the only free option, note the travel or timing implication rather than silently treating collection and home delivery as equivalent.

Check whether the discount is real

“Was/now” labels and percentage-off badges describe a reference price chosen by the seller; they do not prove that the television recently sold at that amount or that the current offer is unusual. The useful comparison is the present total against a recent sequence of prices for the same model and size.

Look at recent history, not only the previous price

  1. Confirm that the history belongs to the exact model code and screen size.
  2. Identify the dates covered and note whether the record includes promotions, short-lived price changes or periods when the item was unavailable.
  3. Compare today’s total payable price with several recent points, not just the highest displayed reference price.
  4. Check at least a few independent retailers to see whether the same price movement appears elsewhere.

Price-history records can be incomplete, especially when a retailer changes a product URL or sells a variant under a new listing. Treat a gap as a limitation of the record, not as proof that the missing period had a particular price. A brief spike can also make a percentage reduction look dramatic even though the television spent most of the period near today’s price.

What the 87% finding does—and does not—show

Which? reported that 87% of the televisions it examined at Very used a “was” price that was not the most recent price. The analysis covered televisions promoted with “was/now” pricing at Amazon, AO, Argos, Currys and Very between February 2024 and February 2025: Which? investigation. That percentage applies to the televisions and retailer sample studied; it is not an estimate for every retailer or television. Use it as a reason to verify the reference price, not as a claim about any particular offer you are considering.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Interpret percentage-off claims cautiously

A discount percentage can be calculated from a previous price that was brief, old or not the most recent selling price. Ask three questions: Was the exact model actually sold at the reference price? When was it last offered at that price? How does the current total compare with ordinary recent prices? If the listing does not answer those questions, describe the offer as a current price rather than assuming the advertised percentage represents a saving.

Do not mix a manufacturer’s suggested price with a retailer’s own previous selling price without labelling the distinction. Those are different reference points. Likewise, a “from” price for a range does not establish the former price of the particular size in your basket.

Compare several retailers without trusting a ranking blindly

The CMA’s consumer guide recommends checking several retailers because prices can vary significantly, even during major sales: “Shop smart, bag a bargain – a consumer expert’s guide to online shopping”, published 13 November 2025.

Verify comparison-site results at the source

Comparison services can save time, but the CMA warns that businesses may pay to improve their rankings. A result near the top is therefore not automatically the cheapest or most suitable offer. Open the retailer’s own page, confirm the model code, and recalculate the total including delivery before recording the result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The same rule applies to an AI-generated recommendation. Ask the system for the model code, price date and retailer link, then check those details yourself. Prices, stock and terms can change after a recommendation was generated, and an AI summary may combine different sizes or variants. Treat an automated result as a lead for checking, not as evidence that a deal is available or suitable.

Compare like-for-like retailer conditions

For each candidate, record whether the set is in stock, the promised dispatch or delivery window, and whether collection is required. Read the return instructions and warranty information on the retailer’s current page. Two identical prices can have different practical value if one has a delivery date you cannot meet or materially different return conditions.

Check whether the displayed offer is for a new television, a clearance unit or another condition stated on the page. If the listing does not make the condition clear, ask the retailer before paying. Keep any accessory or service valuation separate: a bundled cable or installation appointment should not be used to disguise a higher television price.

No retailer’s current prices or terms are fixed by this guide. Recheck the pages immediately before ordering, especially during a sale when stock and delivery estimates can move quickly.

Use energy information as part of value

Purchase price is only one cost of owning a television. Where the product is in scope, the UK energy label and accompanying product information provide model and energy-use data. The government guidance explains requirements and notes differences between Great Britain and Northern Ireland: Regulations: energy information, updated 8 April 2026.

Compare the same information for every model

  • Check the energy class shown for the exact model and size.
  • Read the stated energy-use figure and the conditions or mode to which it applies.
  • Make sure the label belongs to the model you are pricing; do not transfer data from a larger or smaller sibling.
  • When comparing regions, confirm that the label format and product-information rules apply to your location.

Energy data does not by itself reveal your bill because usage depends on viewing hours, brightness, settings and local electricity rates. It does provide another consistent axis for comparing otherwise similar offers. A lower purchase price may not be the lowest overall ownership cost if the alternative has materially different energy use over the period you expect to keep it.

Use the label as a comparison aid rather than a promise of a particular annual bill. Record the figure and the test or operating condition shown with it, then apply the same information consistently to every candidate. Great Britain and Northern Ireland may present product information differently, so do not infer that a label from one market automatically satisfies the requirements of the other.

Understand the UK scope of the pricing guidance

The price-transparency and shopping guidance cited here is UK-focused. The CMA’s statements describe UK consumer-price requirements and shopping advice. Energy-information presentation and obligations can differ between Great Britain and Northern Ireland, as the GOV.UK guidance explains. If you are buying elsewhere, check the rules and labels that apply in your jurisdiction rather than assuming the UK framework is universal.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Clear, complete and accurate” pricing means the mandatory total should be visible before you commit to the purchase. It does not mean every retailer must charge the same amount or offer identical delivery and return terms. Those commercial terms still need to be read on the individual product page. The guidance is about how prices are presented, not a guarantee that a seller’s offer will remain available while you compare it.

A repeatable TV-deal checking process

  1. Choose the product identity. Copy the exact model number and screen size from the listing you want.
  2. Collect alternatives. Search several retailers for that same code and size, not merely the same brand family or resolution.
  3. Record headline prices. Capture the displayed “now” price and any stated “was” price with the date checked.
  4. Add mandatory costs. Include delivery and every unavoidable charge; keep optional services separate.
  5. Check history. Use an available price-history record and compare the current total with multiple recent prices.
  6. Inspect the offer conditions. Verify stock, dispatch, delivery, returns and warranty information on the retailer’s page.
  7. Check energy information. Compare the label and product-information data for the exact model where available.
  8. Validate automated suggestions. If a comparison site or AI tool supplied the lead, verify the model and total directly with the retailer.
  9. Save your evidence. Keep screenshots or notes of the model code, total, conditions and date so you can identify a changed listing before ordering.

If a retailer changes the page while you are comparing, start a fresh record rather than editing the old one without a note. This avoids carrying a former delivery charge, stock status or model suffix into a new calculation. On a fast-moving sale, a timestamped note can be as important as the percentage shown in the product card.

Common traps and how to correct them

Trap: comparing a family name

Correction: Require an exact model code and size match. If one page does not provide both, remove it from the like-for-like comparison.

Trap: ignoring delivery until checkout

Correction: Enter your destination early enough to reveal mandatory delivery charges, then compare totals rather than product-card prices.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Trap: treating “was” as a verified normal price

Correction: Check the last recorded selling price and the wider recent range. The reference figure is context, not proof of a bargain.

Trap: accepting a comparison ranking as a verdict

Correction: Open the retailer page, because paid placement can affect order. Recheck availability and the final payable amount.

Trap: assuming the cheapest set costs least to own

Correction: Compare energy information and consider your expected viewing pattern alongside the purchase price.

Trap: relying on an old saved page

Correction: Recheck the live listing immediately before payment. Prices, stock, delivery windows and terms are volatile.

Trap: comparing conditional prices as if they were universal

Correction: Label membership, voucher and payment requirements clearly, and show the ordinary payable price beside the conditional one.

Trap: treating a missing history entry as evidence

Correction: Mark the period as unknown. Use other retailers and available records, but do not fill the gap with an assumption about the former price.

How to weigh two otherwise similar offers

After removing mismatched models and calculating total prices, decide which differences matter to you. A practical order is:

  • Product certainty: reject any offer whose exact model or size cannot be confirmed.
  • Financial evidence: prefer a current total supported by recent history over a dramatic but unverified percentage.
  • Availability: value stock and a usable delivery window if you need the television by a specific date.
  • After-sale terms: read the current return and warranty details before treating two prices as equivalent.
  • Running cost: use the applicable energy information when expected usage makes it relevant.

This framework does not produce one universal “best deal.” It identifies the offer whose product identity, total cost and conditions fit your priorities with the fewest unverified assumptions. If two offers remain close, choose the one with clearer information and terms you can verify, rather than awarding the win to the largest advertised percentage.

Questions shoppers commonly ask

What is the best way to compare the same TV from its standard price to its sale price?

First confirm that “standard” and “sale” refer to the same model code and screen size. Then record the current total, the stated former price, the date of the check and several recent prices. A sale is more credible when today’s total is below ordinary recent prices, not merely below a high reference figure.

How many retailers should I check?

There is no fixed number that guarantees a deal. Check several independent retailers, as the CMA notes that prices can vary significantly even during major sales. Stop when you have enough like-for-like listings to see whether the current price is unusual and whether delivery or terms alter the result.

Should delivery be included in a price comparison?

Yes. Include every unavoidable delivery or other purchase charge in the total payable price. Record optional timed delivery, installation or protection separately so a service you do not need does not distort the television-to-television comparison.

Can a comparison website tell me which TV deal is best?

It can help locate candidates, but not make the final decision. The CMA warns that businesses may pay to improve rankings. Open the retailer listing, verify the exact model and size, check stock and recalculate the delivered total yourself.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How should I use an AI shopping recommendation?

Ask for the exact model code, the price date and a direct retailer link. Verify all three on the live retailer page, because prices, stock and terms can change and an automated summary can combine variants.

Does a lower purchase price always mean lower cost?

No. Compare the applicable energy label and product information for the exact model, and consider how long and how often you expect to use the television. Energy figures support a consistent comparison but do not predict your personal bill without your usage and electricity rate.

What if the listing does not show a model number?

Do not include it in a like-for-like comparison. Ask the retailer for the full model identity or choose a listing that supplies it. A shared family name or photograph is not enough to establish that two televisions are the same.

When a deal is worth accepting

A television offer is credible when the exact model and size match, the mandatory total is clear, the current price compares well with recent history, and the retailer’s stock and terms are acceptable. A large displayed saving without those checks is simply an advertised reference. Revisit the comparison if the model code changes, delivery fees appear late, the item goes out of stock or the retailer alters the conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a “was/now” TV price proof of a genuine saving?

No. Verify the exact model, the latest recorded selling price and a wider recent history. Which? found that 87% of the TVs it examined at Very used a “was” price that was not the most recent price, but that sample does not represent every retailer or television.

What should be included in the TV price?

Include the television price and every unavoidable charge, such as mandatory delivery. List optional installation, premium delivery and protection services separately. The CMA says prices should be clear, complete and accurate.

Why match the full model number?

A product family can contain different sizes, regional variants and retailer-specific versions. The full model code and screen size establish that you are comparing the same television.

Are comparison-site rankings reliable?

Use them to find candidates, not as a verdict. The CMA warns that businesses may pay to improve rankings. Confirm the model, stock, terms and final total on the retailer’s own page.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How can energy information help compare TVs?

Where applicable, compare the energy class and stated energy-use data for the same model and size. Energy labels do not predict your exact bill, but they add an ownership-cost comparison alongside the purchase price.

Does UK pricing guidance apply everywhere?

The CMA pricing guidance is UK-focused, and energy-information presentation can differ between Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Buyers elsewhere should check the rules and labels for their own jurisdiction.

The Bottom Line

Match the exact model, compare the complete delivered total, check recent prices at several retailers and verify energy and after-sale information. Treat “was/now” claims and rankings as leads to investigate, not proof of a bargain.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
