Short answer: choose the UGREEN DXP4800 Plus if built-in 10GbE, higher published memory capacity and more immediate hardware headroom are central to your workload. Choose the Synology DS923+ if your work depends on Synology’s DSM operating system, its package ecosystem, or its established business features. Both are four-bay, diskless NAS enclosures with two M.2 slots, so the sensible comparison includes drives, networking and software—not just the enclosure.

There is no synchronized, independent head-to-head benchmark or same-market price comparison for these exact models. The specifications below are manufacturer claims; the performance figures are from an IT Pro review of the DXP4800 Plus in one test configuration. Use the decision process to match the NAS to your actual files, applications and network.

At a glance: the differences that affect a buying decision

RAID choices listed by the manufacturer JBOD, Basic, RAID 0, 1, 5, 6 and 10 Conventional RAID levels plus Synology Hybrid RAID (SHR)
Drives in the box No; purchased separately No; purchased separately

The biggest practical split is straightforward: UGREEN gives you faster networking without an add-on, while Synology gives you DSM and the platform built around it. Processor cores and memory ceilings are useful clues, but they do not prove that one enclosure is faster for every file-serving, container, virtual-machine or media workload.

What both NAS enclosures provide

Four bays and two M.2 slots

Each model accepts four SATA drives and has two M.2 slots. You therefore start with the same broad storage shape: a main pool made from hard drives or SATA SSDs, with the possibility of using NVMe modules for cache or another supported storage role. The exact behavior, supported drive list and storage-manager workflow depend on the operating system, so check current documentation before buying a particular NVMe model.

Diskless purchase means a system price, not a box price

Neither enclosure includes storage drives. Budget for four compatible HDDs or SSDs, and include a replacement-drive plan if the NAS will hold important data. NAS-oriented hard drives are designed for this type of always-on, multi-drive use; Seagate describes its IronWolf Pro line as purpose-built for NAS. UGREEN also references compatibility with third-party drive makers. Confirm the exact drive model, capacity and regional availability for your chosen NAS before ordering.

RAID protects availability, not your backup

RAID can keep a pool operating after certain drive failures, but it does not protect against accidental deletion, malware, theft, fire or a damaged NAS. Keep an independent backup on another device or location. A four-drive RAID 5 or SHR arrangement may provide a useful balance of capacity and fault tolerance, while RAID 6 sacrifices more capacity for protection against two drive failures. RAID 0 and JBOD improve neither data protection nor backup safety.

Where the DXP4800 Plus is the stronger hardware fit

Built-in 10GbE and an additional 2.5GbE port

The DXP4800 Plus includes 10GbE rather than requiring a network-card purchase. That matters if your workstation, switch, cabling and storage can move data faster than 1GbE. It also has a 2.5GbE port, which can be useful for a second network path or a client network that has not yet moved to 10GbE.

Do not treat the port label as a guaranteed transfer rate. A 10GbE link helps only when the client has a suitable adapter, the switch and cabling support the link, the disks or SSDs can supply data, and the workload is large or parallel enough to use it. On a 1GbE network, the headline networking advantage will usually be constrained by the network before the NAS hardware is.

More installed and expandable memory

UGREEN specifies 8 GB of DDR5 memory, expandable to 64 GB. That gives more room for concurrent file-service users, containers, virtual machines and memory-intensive services than the DS923+’s stated 4 GB starting point and 32 GB ceiling. It is still a specification, not a promise that every application will scale linearly with additional RAM. Check the memory type, module requirements and supported upgrade configuration before purchasing.

CPU specification and extra physical interfaces

The Pentium Gold 8505 is specified as a five-core/six-thread, 12th-generation processor. The enclosure also provides HDMI and an SD card reader. Those interfaces may suit a creator who moves camera media locally or wants a direct display connection, but their value depends on the software functions available in the current UGOS Pro release. They should not be counted as a substitute for a tested application workflow.

What independent testing actually shows

IT Pro tested the DXP4800 Plus with a PC using a 5GbE adapter connected to a 10GbE switch. In ATTO testing, the review reported at least 64 MB/s for 4KB operations and at least 580 MB/s for larger operations across the tested disk, SSD and cached volumes. In a separate 11.1GB Windows copy test, the fastest reported write was 58.37 MB/s and the read result was 75.84 MB/s.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Those results describe one NAS configuration, network path, drive set, cache state and test method. The contrast between the ATTO and Windows-copy figures is a useful warning: synthetic or highly sequential tests can look very different from a real file copy. IT Pro also could not run its usual Plex transcoding test. No equivalent independent test of the DS923+ was established, so these figures are not a performance ranking between the two models.

Where the DS923+ is the stronger platform fit

DSM’s package and administration ecosystem

Synology’s DS923+ datasheet documents DSM support for SHR as well as conventional RAID, Btrfs and ext4 file systems, multiple network protocols, directory-service integration, security controls, virtualization integrations and first-party packages. These features matter when the NAS must join an existing identity system, provide a defined backup workflow, host business services or integrate with other infrastructure.

UGREEN’s own comparison FAQ states: “Where Synology pulls ahead is in the maturity of its DSM software, its larger first-party app ecosystem, and its longer track record with enterprise features such as Active Backup for Business.” That is a vendor-authored comparison, not an independent benchmark, but it identifies the central reason many buyers choose the DS923+: the software workflow may be more important than the raw enclosure specification.

ECC memory and a documented, conventional office feature set

The DS923+ starts with 4 GB of DDR4 ECC memory and can be expanded to 32 GB. ECC is intended to detect and correct certain single-bit memory errors, which can be relevant to buyers prioritizing data-integrity features. The DS923+ also offers two 1GbE ports out of the box and accepts the E10G22-T1-Mini module for 10GbE. If 10GbE is a requirement, include that module—and any switch or cabling—in the system budget.

UGOS Pro is usable but should be checked against your application list

In its review-period assessment, IT Pro found UGOS Pro approachable but less deep than DSM. The reviewer counted 29 applications in the App Center at that time and noted missing network services and selected software. Docker and a virtual-machine application were identified as options that technically confident users could use to fill some gaps.

That app count and those omissions are review-period observations, not a current catalog. Applications, permissions and integrations can change with firmware releases. Before choosing the DXP4800 Plus for a business workflow, list every required package—backup, surveillance, directory, synchronization, container, virtual-machine and media tools—and verify support for the exact current model and software version.

Compare the network before comparing the NAS

If you already have 10GbE

The DXP4800 Plus is simpler to deploy because its 10GbE port is included. The DS923+ can reach 10GbE, but you must buy and install the optional E10G22-T1-Mini module. Check whether the client computer has a 10GbE adapter, whether the switch has the right ports, and whether the cable category and length meet the link requirements.

If your network is 1GbE or 2.5GbE

The DXP4800 Plus still has a 2.5GbE port, but the DS923+’s two 1GbE ports may be adequate for ordinary office shares, backups and a small number of users. Link aggregation does not turn two 1GbE ports into one 2Gbps connection for a single transfer; it can distribute separate sessions when the switch and configuration support it. Do not pay for 10GbE unless your current or planned workload can use it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Workload, not link speed, determines the result

Large sequential video files and multiple simultaneous clients can benefit from faster networking and SSDs. Small documents, metadata-heavy operations and a single client may be limited by latency, application behavior or the hard drives. Measure the path you actually intend to use rather than assuming the fastest port will produce the fastest copy.

Match the storage layout to the data

Choose drives before calculating usable capacity

Usable capacity depends on the number, size and layout of the drives, filesystem overhead and the selected protection scheme. Mixed-capacity drive efficiency also depends on the system and layout. Use the current capacity calculator for the chosen platform before quoting a final figure, and leave free space for snapshots, metadata, growth and replacement operations.

SHR versus listed conventional RAID

Synology documents SHR alongside RAID 0, 1, 5, 6 and 10-style options. SHR can simplify expansion with drives of different sizes in some configurations. UGREEN lists JBOD, Basic, RAID 0, 1, 5, 6 and 10. The names are not enough to predict every migration or expansion outcome: read the current storage-manager documentation and decide whether future drive replacement, mixed capacities or maximum usable space matters more than a familiar RAID level.

NVMe cache is conditional

Two M.2 slots do not automatically mean that adding two NVMe drives will accelerate every workload. Cache helps only when the access pattern, cache policy and software support benefit from it; it also introduces another component to monitor and replace. For a media library dominated by sequential reads, more RAM or faster client networking may matter more. Treat NVMe as an evaluated option, not a mandatory accessory.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use a complete-cost comparison

Prices vary by region and date, and no synchronized price for both diskless enclosures was established. A UK UGREEN product page displayed £545.49 when accessed, but that is a volatile regional snapshot and should not be compared with an older or differently localized Synology price.

Build a same-day, same-region worksheet with these line items:

  • The diskless NAS enclosure.
  • Four compatible NAS-rated HDDs or SSDs, plus a spare-drive plan.
  • For the DS923+, the optional 10GbE module if your network requires it.
  • A 10GbE or 2.5GbE switch, client adapters and suitable cabling when they are not already installed.
  • Any M.2 NVMe modules, UPS, backup storage and licensing required by your chosen workflow.

Comparing only the enclosure prices can reverse the apparent value. A DS923+ with a 10GbE module may cost more initially, while the DXP4800 Plus may require more time or third-party components if a needed business application is unavailable in UGOS Pro.

A practical decision process

  1. Write the workload list. Separate ordinary file shares and backups from containers, virtual machines, media serving, surveillance, directory integration and business backup. Mark each function as essential, desirable or optional.
  2. Identify software dependencies. For every essential function, verify current package availability and model support in DSM or UGOS Pro. Do not assume a similarly named package has the same features or permissions.
  3. Map the network. Record the client adapters, switch ports, cable runs and expected concurrent users. If the path stops at 1GbE, the DXP4800 Plus’s 10GbE advantage may not affect current transfers.
  4. Design the storage pool. Select drive models and capacities, then calculate usable space for the exact RAID or SHR layout. Add an independent backup target; RAID alone is not a backup.
  5. Price the complete system. Use current prices from the same region and date, adding the DS923+ 10GbE module or any networking equipment needed to make either system useful.
  6. Allow for growth and support. Consider memory expansion, drive replacement, firmware updates and the support horizon for applications you cannot easily replace.
  7. Choose based on the constraint. If networking and hardware headroom are the constraint, favor the DXP4800 Plus. If a DSM package, directory workflow or established business feature is the constraint, favor the DS923+.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Declaring a winner from core counts: the Pentium’s five cores/six threads and the Ryzen’s dual-core/four-thread specification are not a universal benchmark. Application support, storage media and network limits can dominate.
  • Assuming 10GbE guarantees 10Gbps file copies: every link in the path and the workload must sustain it. The IT Pro copy results demonstrate why real transfers can trail synthetic tests.
  • Treating RAID as backup: keep a separate, tested copy and periodically perform a restore test.
  • Buying drives solely by capacity: check compatibility, workload rating, vibration behavior, warranty and regional availability.
  • Assuming current app parity: DSM and UGOS Pro change over time. Verify the exact package and version before committing business data.
  • Comparing unmatched prices: align region, currency, date, drive count and network upgrades.
  • Buying NVMe cache automatically: establish that your access pattern and software benefit from it first.

Which one should you buy?

Choose the UGREEN DXP4800 Plus when

  • You can use built-in 10GbE now or expect to build a 10GbE network soon.
  • Your workload benefits from the specified 8 GB starting memory or a memory ceiling up to 64 GB.
  • HDMI, an SD card reader or the Pentium platform fits your workflow.
  • You have verified that UGOS Pro provides every application and protocol your work requires, or you are comfortable operating containers and virtual machines to fill selected gaps.

Choose the Synology DS923+ when

  • Your workflow is built around DSM packages, SHR, directory integration, documented security controls or Synology’s business backup and virtualization integrations.
  • You value ECC memory and the longer enterprise-feature track record described in UGREEN’s comparison.
  • Your current network is 1GbE and you do not need to purchase 10GbE immediately.
  • You prefer a mature platform ecosystem and have confirmed that the required packages support the DS923+.

Neither choice is automatically better for every buyer. The DXP4800 Plus offers the more ambitious out-of-box hardware and network specification; the DS923+ offers the more established software-centered experience. Make the final decision only after checking the applications, drives, network and complete system cost that apply to your installation.
