Compare subscription charges over the same period, then add a streaming device only if your household actually needs new hardware. In the United States, Apple lists its Apple TV service at $14.99 per month after a seven-day trial, or $179.88 for 12 full-price months before tax and eligible offers. Apple’s newly announced Apple TV 4K (4th generation) is a separate $299 purchase, with store availability scheduled for November 13, 2026. If you already own a compatible smart TV, streaming player, game console, computer, phone, or web browser, the box is optional.
What you are comparing
“Apple TV” can mean two different purchases. The Apple TV service is a recurring subscription for shows and films in the Apple TV app. Apple TV 4K is a physical streaming device. Treating them as one product is the most common reason a cost comparison goes wrong.
| Item | What it is | How it is charged | Cost established for this comparison |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apple TV service | Subscription accessed through the Apple TV app | Recurring billing | $14.99 per month after a seven-day trial in the U.S.; $179.88 for 12 full-price months |
| Apple TV 4K (4th generation) | Physical streaming box | One-time hardware purchase | $299 in the U.S.; announced October 13, 2026, with store availability scheduled for November 13, 2026 |
| Other streaming subscriptions | Separate services chosen by your household | Monthly, annual, or another billing cadence | Use each service’s current price and your actual plan |
| Internet service | Connectivity used to stream | Usually recurring | Include only when it is an incremental cost of the decision |
The service subscription does not automatically include other companies’ subscriptions, and it does not make rentals or purchases in the Apple TV app free. Those are separate decisions in your household budget.

Monthly and 12-month subscription cost
Apple’s U.S. service page, checked October 13, 2026, lists Apple TV at $14.99 per month after a seven-day free trial. Multiplying the listed monthly rate by 12 gives $179.88 for 12 full-price months (14.99 × 12). That arithmetic excludes sales tax and any offer for which you are eligible.
#1 Best Overall
- 4K High Dynamic Range (Dolby Vision and HDR10) for stunning picture quality
- Dolby Digital Plus 7.1 surround sound
- A10X Fusion chip for ultra-fast graphics and performance
- Voice search by asking the Siri Remote
The seven-day trial is a one-time introductory period, not a permanent reduction in the monthly price. Write down the date the trial ends and check the renewal terms so your comparison uses the price that will actually be billed.
What the subscription includes—and what it does not
Apple states that an Apple TV subscription does not include third-party subscription services or content available to rent or purchase in the Apple TV app. If you add another service, rent a film, or buy a title, record that charge in its own line rather than treating it as part of the $14.99 subscription.
This distinction matters when two households both say they “pay for Apple TV” but one also pays for several add-on services or frequent rentals. Their Apple TV subscription cost is the same; their total entertainment cost is not.
Apple TV 4K hardware cost
Price and timing of the announced model
Apple announced Apple TV 4K (4th generation) at $299 in the U.S. on October 13, 2026. Preorders began that day, while Apple says store availability is scheduled to begin November 13, 2026. The date is important: availability and listing details can change, so verify them when you are ready to buy.
The $299 figure is a one-time hardware price, not a monthly plan and not a bundled price for Apple TV service. The announcement does not establish a discount on the subscription for buying the box.
Do you need an Apple TV 4K to watch Apple TV?
No. Apple lists the Apple TV app on supported Apple devices, smart TVs, streaming devices, game consoles, Android and Windows devices, select cable boxes, and the web. If a device you already own supports the app in your country and model, you can watch without buying an Apple streaming box.
Compatibility is model-specific. A television brand or device family being supported does not guarantee that every model is supported. Check the exact model, operating-system version, and country before counting an existing device as a no-purchase solution.

For example, Roku’s support information says the Apple TV channel works on select Roku players and Roku TV models and warns that compatibility depends on model and country. Use that exact-device check rather than assuming every Roku product will work.
The basic calculation
Step 1: Choose one comparison period
Twelve months is usually easiest because it exposes annual subscription spending and makes a one-time device purchase visible. You can also calculate 24 or 36 months when deciding whether new hardware is worthwhile over its expected use.
Step 2: Add recurring subscriptions
For each service, record the plan name, price, billing frequency, renewal date, taxes if shown separately, and any offer’s end date. Convert annual plans to their billed annual amount; convert monthly plans to the number of paid months in your chosen period. Do not treat a free trial as a recurring discount.
| Subscription line | Billing cadence | Price to enter | 12-month calculation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apple TV | Monthly | $14.99 after trial | $14.99 × 12 = $179.88 |
| Service 2 | Use your plan | Current billed price | Monthly price × paid months, or annual price |
| Service 3 | Use your plan | Current billed price | Monthly price × paid months, or annual price |
| Rentals and purchases | Transaction-based | Expected spending | Add only if your household plans to make them |
Step 3: Add hardware only when it is incremental
If your current television or player already runs the required apps, enter $0 for new hardware. If you need a new player, add its one-time price in the first period. Keep that amount separate from subscriptions so a later comparison does not accidentally count the box as a recurring fee.
Step 4: State exclusions and assumptions
Write whether your total includes sales tax, promotional pricing, internet service, rental or purchase transactions, and hardware you already own. A transparent total is more useful than a lower number built on hidden assumptions.
Worked Apple TV totals
Existing compatible device
Suppose your household already has a supported smart TV and wants only Apple TV for 12 full-price months. The incremental total is $179.88 before tax or eligible offers: $179.88 for the service and $0 for new hardware.

| Component | Amount |
|---|---|
| Apple TV 4K (4th generation), one time | $299.00 |
| Apple TV service, 12 full-price months | $179.88 |
| Illustrated first-year total | $478.88 |
$478.88 is arithmetic using the announced hardware price and 12 months of the listed service price. It is not a quoted bundle, does not include tax, and does not prove that the device will be available at that price on your purchase date.
Looking beyond the first year
Hardware changes the first period more than later periods. Using the same prices and assuming the service remains $14.99 per month, the two-year arithmetic is $299 + ($179.88 × 2) = $658.76, or about $27.45 per month averaged across 24 months. Three years would be $299 + ($179.88 × 3) = $838.64, or about $23.30 per month averaged across 36 months. These are planning illustrations, not forecasts of future pricing, taxes, repairs, resale value, or new offers.
Compare the realistic household options
| Option | Recurring cost | Hardware cost in the first period | When it makes sense | Checks required |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Keep current compatible device | Chosen subscriptions only | $0 incremental | Your TV, player, console, computer, phone, or browser supports the needed apps | Exact model, country, app availability, and operating-system support |
| Buy a new streaming player | Chosen subscriptions only | Add the device’s one-time price | Your existing equipment lacks the app or cannot meet your viewing setup | Price, availability date, ports, network requirements, and app support |
| Apple TV 4K plus Apple TV service | $179.88 for 12 full-price months at the listed rate | $299 announced U.S. price | You want the announced box and do not already have suitable hardware | Availability on or after November 13, 2026 and current pricing |
| Subscriptions without Apple TV | Add each service’s current billed price | Usually $0 if current hardware works | Your viewing needs do not include Apple TV programming | Catalog needs, plan limits, billing dates, and cancellations |
Buying a box does not lower the service prices unless a specific, documented offer says it does. Compare the viewing value and device requirements separately from the subscription decision.
How to audit your current streaming bill
- Collect 12 months of statements. Search card, bank, app-store, and mobile-provider records for every recurring streaming charge. A subscription billed through a different account is easy to miss.
- Identify the exact plan. Record whether each charge is monthly, annual, ad-supported, premium, or a temporary promotion. Note the renewal date and the date any introductory price ends.
- Mark actual usage. For each service, list the people who use it and the programs they watched during the last billing period. A service no one used should be evaluated before another subscription is added.
- Separate transactions. Put rentals, purchases, pay-per-view events, and channel add-ons in a transaction column. They are not evidence that the base subscription price is higher or lower.
- Check existing hardware first. Open the app store or app list on each television, player, console, computer, and phone. Confirm support for the exact model and country before budgeting for a new device.
- Build a before-and-after total. Sum the subscriptions you keep, add planned transactions, and add hardware only in the scenario that requires it. Show tax and internet as separate lines when they are unknown.
Costs people commonly leave out
Taxes and billing-region differences
The $14.99 and $299 figures are U.S. amounts. Sales tax is not included in the stated subscription arithmetic, and tax treatment varies by location. Do not transfer these prices to another country without checking that market’s Apple page and currency.
Promotions and eligibility
A trial or promotional rate can change the first invoice without changing the standard renewal price. Put the promotional end date beside the amount, then calculate the period after the offer expires. If you cannot verify eligibility, use the standard listed price rather than assuming a discount.

Internet service
Do not add a new broadband charge when the household already pays for internet and the question is the incremental cost of streaming choices. Add internet only if streaming requires a new plan, speed tier, data allowance, or installation. Keep that decision separate from Apple TV service and hardware.
Multiple screens and replacement hardware
One compatible device may cover the main television while another room needs a separate player. Count only the additional equipment the household will purchase. If a device is replacing broken hardware, label the full price as a replacement cost rather than implying that Apple TV service requires it.

Decision rules for common situations
You already have a supported smart TV
Start with the service-only figure. Install or open the Apple TV app, sign in, and verify playback before shopping. Your incremental first-year cost at the listed U.S. price is $179.88 before tax and offers, not $478.88.
Your television has no compatible app
Compare the one-time price of a compatible player with the cost of replacing the television. Include only the hardware path you would actually choose, then add the same subscription total to both scenarios. A device is justified by compatibility or features you need, not by a reduction in Apple TV’s monthly charge.
You are deciding whether to keep several services
Use one 12-month worksheet for every service, then create a second version that removes the least-used service. The difference is the recurring saving. Do not count a device purchase as a saving; it is an additional cost unless a verified offer changes the calculation.
You are buying after the announced availability date
Recheck the Apple TV 4K (4th generation) listing, price, and stock when you buy. The October 13, 2026 announcement and scheduled November 13, 2026 store date describe the product at that time; they do not guarantee a later price or availability.
A reusable worksheet
Copy this structure into a spreadsheet and make one row per service or purchase:
| Line | Amount | Billing type | Include? | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Apple TV service | $14.99 × paid months | Recurring | Yes if selected | Seven-day trial; U.S. listed rate checked October 13, 2026 |
| Other service | Your current billed amount | Recurring | Yes if retained | Record promotion end date |
| Apple TV 4K hardware | $299 if purchased | One time | Only if needed | 4th generation announced October 13, 2026; store availability scheduled November 13, 2026 |
| Rentals or purchases | Your planned amount | Transaction | Only if planned | Not included with the service subscription |
| Internet change | Incremental amount | Recurring or one time | Only if required | Exclude an existing bill when calculating incremental streaming cost |
| Total | Sum included lines | State tax and offer assumptions |
For a fair comparison, duplicate the worksheet for 12, 24, and 36 months. Keep the subscription assumptions identical across scenarios and change only the hardware or services under consideration.

Apple TV service and Apple TV 4K are separate costs. At the U.S. price listed October 13, 2026, 12 full-price months of the service are $179.88 after the seven-day trial. The announced Apple TV 4K (4th generation) adds $299 once, producing a $478.88 first-year illustration before tax when new hardware is genuinely needed. If you already have a supported device, leave that $299 out; if you add other services or rentals, count those separately and use your household’s actual billing amounts.
