There is no universal winner among Supermicro, Dell, HPE, and Lenovo AI servers. Compare complete, like-for-like configurations against one representative workload and one facility plan. Start with accelerator generation and memory, then verify interconnects, host resources, storage, networking, chassis space, cooling, power, management, service, availability, and configured price. The model names in vendor literature describe materially different systems, so a GPU-count comparison alone can produce the wrong purchase decision.

What a fair comparison must include

An enterprise AI server is a system, not a collection of GPUs. Two eight-accelerator servers can behave very differently because their accelerator architectures, memory capacities, scale-up fabrics, CPUs, network adapters, cooling methods, and software ecosystems differ. Build a comparison around the workload you will run: distributed training, large-model inference, fine-tuning, simulation, data preparation, or a mixed platform.

Use the same assumptions for every quote. Specify the model generation, accelerator SKU and count, CPU model, system memory, boot and data storage, network fabric, rack position, power redundancy, cooling method, integration scope, warranty, support response, delivery region, and required date. If a vendor cannot quote one of those items, mark it as unknown instead of treating an unspecified configuration as equivalent.

Decision axis Questions to ask Why it changes the decision
Accelerator platform Which vendor, generation, memory size, accelerator count, and exact SKU? NVIDIA B200, H100, H200, H20, AMD MI300X, and Intel Gaudi 3 are not interchangeable by count.
GPU topology What scale-up interconnect, GPU complex, and scale-out network are included? Communication-heavy training can be limited by topology or fabric before raw accelerator capacity is used.
Host resources Which CPU generation, socket count, core count, DIMM population, and memory speed? Preprocessing, orchestration, storage pipelines, and CPU-bound applications may need substantial host capacity.
Storage and networking Which NVMe bays, drives, adapters, speeds, and fabric options are in the bill of materials? Data-heavy inference and distributed training depend on sustained input and checkpoint bandwidth.
Chassis and rack fit How many rack units, how deep and heavy is the system, and what service clearance is required? A 4U, 6U, 8U, or 10U system changes rack density, floor loading, cable routing, and maintenance access.
Cooling and power Is it air or liquid cooled? What are configured draw, heat rejection, redundancy, and facility requirements? Electrical capacity and cooling readiness can determine whether a system can be installed at all.
Operations What BMC, telemetry, provisioning, firmware, and monitoring integrations are supported? Operational labor and fleet consistency matter after the hardware is commissioned.
Service and procurement What warranty, onsite response, deployment, lead time, and regional support are written into the quote? Published specifications do not establish price, availability, or equivalent service.

How the documented platforms differ

Supermicro SYS-A21GE-NBRT: 10U air-cooled-style deployment choice

Supermicro’s SYS-A21GE-NBRT is documented as a 10U, dual-socket system with eight NVIDIA B200 SXM GPUs and 1.4 TB of GPU memory space. The product information lists support for dual 4th- or 5th-generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors, 32 DDR5 DIMM slots, front hot-swap NVMe bays, two 10GbE RJ-45 ports, and a dedicated BMC/IPMI management controller. It also lists six redundant 5,250 W power supplies.

The 1.4 TB figure is the system’s stated GPU memory space, not a performance rating. Confirm the exact B200 module configuration, host-memory population, storage devices, network adapters, and cooling assumptions in a regional quote. Ten rack units also means that a nominally large accelerator system consumes more vertical space than the 4U, 6U, or 8U examples below; include service clearance and cable paths in the rack drawing.

Supermicro SYS-421GE-NBRT-LCC: 4U liquid-cooled B200 option

The SYS-421GE-NBRT-LCC is a separate 4U, liquid-cooled eight-GPU B200 design. Its product page explicitly ties purchase to complete liquid-cooled rack integration and onsite service. That requirement is a deployment constraint, not an optional accessory. Before comparing its price with an air-cooled server, confirm whether the quote includes coolant distribution, rack manifolds, facility-water interfaces, commissioning, leak testing, and onsite acceptance.

Do not treat the 4U and 10U Supermicro systems as the same server with different sheet-metal dimensions. They represent different rack-density and facility strategies, and their integration work can be materially different.

Dell PowerEdge XE9680: several accelerator ecosystems in one 6U family

Dell’s PowerEdge XE9680 specification sheet describes a 6U rack server with eight-accelerator choices that include NVIDIA HGX H100 with 80 GB per GPU, NVIDIA H200 with 141 GB, NVIDIA H20 with 96 GB, AMD Instinct MI300X with 192 GB, and Intel Gaudi 3 with 128 GB. The sheet also lists 4th- and 5th-generation Intel Xeon Scalable processor options, with CPU and memory details dependent on the selected processor generation.

This breadth is useful when an organization wants to evaluate different accelerator software ecosystems within one vendor family. It does not demonstrate equal performance, equal software maturity, equal availability, or equal price among the choices. Request a separate bill of materials for each accelerator variant. The network adapters, firmware, host-memory configuration, and supported operating environment may differ with the accelerator platform.

HPE Cray XD675 and XD685 Gen11: keep the product lines distinct

The HPE Cray XD675 user guide documents AMD MI300X accelerators with 192 GB of HBM3 per GPU and states system consumption of 12.15 kW, subject to configuration. Treat that power figure as an HPE-published configuration value, not a universal draw for every XD675 build. Ask for idle, typical, and maximum values for the exact orderable system and for the rack-level heat-rejection requirement.

A separate NVIDIA certified-systems listing includes the HPE Cray XD685 Gen11 with an eight-GPU HGX H200 configuration. XD675 with MI300X and XD685 Gen11 with HGX H200 are distinct HPE platforms. Do not merge their specifications into one generic “HPE AI server” row, and do not infer a complete XD685 specification from the XD675 guide.

Lenovo ThinkSystem SR680a V3 and V4

Lenovo’s ThinkSystem SR680a V3 is documented as an 8U, air-cooled system supporting eight HGX H100, H200, or B200 GPUs. Lenovo lists up to 4 TB of system memory and XClarity Controller 2 for systems management. Verify the DIMM count, supported speeds, storage options, network adapters, and actual memory population for the chosen GPU configuration rather than assuming that the maximum headline capacity is included.

Lenovo’s V4 product guide describes an eight-GPU HGX B300 NVL8 configuration. V3 and V4 are generation-specific products; the V4 guide should be checked for current orderability and regional configuration before it is used in a purchase comparison. A V4 B300 design should not be scored as if it were the V3 B200 option.

Accelerator memory and interconnect: compare capability, not just count

Memory capacity affects whether a model fits on one device, across a scale-up domain, or only through sharding and offload. The documented examples range from 80 GB H100 GPUs to 192 GB MI300X GPUs and 141 GB H200 GPUs. Those capacities are not direct throughput measurements. Memory bandwidth, software support, precision, kernel availability, model parallelism, and interconnect behavior all influence usable performance.

For each quote, record:

  • Accelerator model and memory per device.
  • Total accelerator memory and how it is divided into GPU complexes.
  • The scale-up interconnect and topology used by the eight-device group.
  • Scale-out adapters, port speeds, cables, switches, and fabric compatibility.
  • Supported frameworks, drivers, runtime versions, and container images required by your applications.

There is no controlled cross-vendor benchmark in the published material for these systems. Avoid statements such as “eight GPUs is faster” or “more memory means better value” unless your own representative test demonstrates it under documented conditions.

Match the server to the workload

Distributed training

Training workloads usually place the greatest demand on scale-up communication, scale-out networking, checkpoint storage, and accelerator memory. Confirm that the proposed topology matches the framework’s collective-communication requirements. Price the complete network fabric, not only the server, and specify checkpoint bandwidth and failure-recovery behavior in the acceptance test.

Large-model inference

Inference decisions often depend on model fit, concurrency, latency targets, and memory headroom. A higher-memory accelerator may reduce partitioning or offload, but the benefit depends on the model and serving software. Ask vendors to run the same model, quantization, batch or concurrency level, and latency target on each shortlisted configuration.

Fine-tuning and mixed workloads

Fine-tuning, retrieval pipelines, and data preparation can make host CPU, system memory, NVMe, and network bandwidth bottlenecks. A configuration optimized only for accelerator count may leave preprocessing queues starved. Include data-loader throughput, storage latency, and CPU utilization in your test plan.

Simulation and non-AI workloads

Some technical-computing applications depend more on CPU cores, memory bandwidth, or specialized accelerator support than on nominal GPU memory. Confirm application certification and numerical requirements for the selected accelerator ecosystem before treating an AI-oriented chassis as a general-purpose replacement.

Facility planning: resolve power, cooling, and rack constraints first

Rack space and service access

The documented systems occupy 4U, 6U, 8U, and 10U. Draw the full rack, including top-of-rack switches, power distribution units, cable bend radius, blanking panels, and technician clearance. Check static and dynamic floor loading, elevator and doorway dimensions, and whether the rack can be rolled into its final position with the system installed.

Electrical capacity

Request configured input power, maximum draw, power-factor assumptions, plug type, voltage, phase, and redundancy mode. The Supermicro A21 page lists six redundant 5,250 W supplies; that is a power-supply design specification, not a statement that the server continuously consumes 31,500 W. HPE’s XD675 guide lists 12.15 kW system consumption subject to configuration. Keep supply capacity and measured operating draw in separate columns.

Cooling and heat rejection

Air-cooled systems require sufficient airflow, supply-air temperature, and hot-aisle management. Liquid-cooled systems additionally require a compatible coolant loop, distribution hardware, water quality controls, leak detection, and qualified commissioning. Supermicro’s SYS-421GE-NBRT-LCC explicitly requires complete liquid-cooled rack integration and onsite service, so a facility without that capability should not compare it as a drop-in alternative to an air-cooled chassis.

Build an apples-to-apples request for quotation

  1. Write the workload brief. State model names, parameter sizes, precision, training or inference mode, target throughput, latency, concurrency, dataset size, and expected growth.
  2. Freeze the accelerator target. Name the exact generation and memory capacity. If alternatives are acceptable, create a separate configuration for each rather than one blended row.
  3. Specify host resources. Require CPU generation and count, core count, system-memory capacity and speed, DIMM population, boot devices, data NVMe, and RAID or erasure requirements.
  4. Specify the fabric. List accelerator topology, network adapter model, port speed, switch model, cables, optics, and software or firmware dependencies.
  5. Specify the facility. Include rack units, depth, weight, input voltage, circuit count, redundancy, cooling type, water-loop requirements, and integration responsibilities.
  6. Specify operations and service. Request BMC features, telemetry, firmware lifecycle, provisioning integration, warranty term, onsite response target, spare strategy, and escalation path.
  7. Require commercial assumptions. Ask for region-specific price, currency, taxes or shipping treatment, lead time, quote validity, installation scope, and acceptance criteria.
  8. Test before acceptance. Use the same software, data, model, precision, batch or concurrency, and network topology for every finalist.

Management and lifecycle questions

Lenovo identifies XClarity Controller 2 for the SR680a V3. For every other shortlisted configuration, obtain equivalent details rather than assuming that a BMC feature set is interchangeable. Ask whether the management controller supports your directory integration, role-based access, Redfish or equivalent APIs, remote media, sensor telemetry, firmware inventory, and fleet update workflows.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Confirm how accelerator firmware, system BIOS, network firmware, drivers, and container runtimes are qualified together. A server that performs well in a one-time test can become an operational burden if updates require manual intervention or if the vendor’s supported matrix does not match your platform images.

Price, availability, and service: what the specifications do not tell you

The published material does not establish current prices, delivery lead times, regional availability, total cost of ownership, cross-vendor performance, or equivalent service response. Those variables must come from written, region-specific quotations. Compare the complete installed cost, including switches, cabling, racks, liquid-cooling equipment, commissioning, software support, shipping, and facility work.

Ask each vendor or reseller to identify assumptions that are often omitted from a headline price:

  • Whether GPUs, CPUs, DIMMs, drives, adapters, optics, and rails are included.
  • Whether rack integration, liquid-loop work, onsite installation, and acceptance testing are included.
  • Whether support covers the full accelerator stack or only the base server.
  • What happens when an accelerator, power supply, pump, fan, cable, or switch fails.

Validate finalists with a controlled proof of concept

Use a test plan that reflects production rather than a vendor-selected microbenchmark. Record model, software versions, dataset, precision, batch or concurrency, sequence length, power mode, network topology, storage path, and temperature conditions. Measure the outcome your organization pays for: training time to a target loss, inference tokens per second at a specified latency, jobs completed per day, or cost per accepted result.

Collect operational measurements as well as throughput:

  • Accelerator utilization and memory headroom.
  • Host CPU and system-memory utilization.
  • Input, checkpoint, and restore bandwidth.
  • Network throughput, collective-operation time, and retransmits.
  • Idle, typical, and peak electrical draw.
  • Noise, inlet and outlet temperatures, and cooling-loop readings where applicable.
  • Recovery time after an accelerator, node, or network fault.

Document any tuning required to reach the result. A configuration that needs custom kernels, undocumented firmware, or manual recovery should carry that operational cost into the decision.

Common comparison mistakes

Ranking by GPU count

Eight devices can mean different memory capacities, interconnects, and software ecosystems. Count is a starting point, not a ranking.

Mixing generations and model lines

Keep Supermicro’s 4U liquid-cooled and 10U systems separate. Keep HPE XD675 MI300X and XD685 Gen11 HGX H200 separate. Keep Lenovo SR680a V3 and V4 separate. Record the exact generation in every table and quote.

Using power-supply capacity as operating consumption

Redundant supply ratings describe available electrical capacity and resilience. They do not replace a configured power and heat-rejection estimate.

Assuming air cooling is always simpler

Air cooling can require substantial airflow and heat-aisle planning. Liquid cooling can improve rack density but adds loop, integration, commissioning, and service dependencies.

Comparing list prices without deployment scope

A server-only price is not comparable with a quote that includes rack integration, switches, cabling, installation, or onsite acceptance.

A practical scoring worksheet

Use a weighted worksheet that reflects your environment. For example, assign separate scores for workload performance, accelerator memory, interconnect, host resources, storage and networking, rack fit, cooling readiness, operational integration, service, and commercial certainty. Define the evidence required for a full score before vendors respond.

Category Evidence required for a comparable score
Workload result Same model, software, data, target metric, and test conditions.
Accelerator fit Exact accelerator SKU, memory, topology, availability, and supported software.
Facility fit Rack drawing, configured power, cooling method, heat rejection, and integration scope.
Operations BMC/API features, monitoring, firmware process, provisioning, and spare strategy.
Commercial certainty Regional price, lead time, warranty, service response, and quote assumptions in writing.

Reject a high score based only on an unverified maximum specification. Mark missing evidence as “not established” and make the vendor close the gap before contract award.

Bottom-line selection logic

Choose the system that satisfies your workload and facility constraints with the fewest unpriced assumptions. Supermicro offers documented B200 choices spanning a dense 4U liquid-cooled design and a 10U system with large GPU memory space. Dell’s XE9680 provides several accelerator ecosystems in a 6U family. HPE requires careful separation of the MI300X-based XD675 and H200-based XD685 Gen11 examples. Lenovo’s SR680a V3 and V4 represent different generations and configurations. None can be named the universal winner from specifications alone.

The defensible decision is the one supported by a matched bill of materials, a facility-ready power and cooling plan, written regional service terms, and a workload test using the exact configuration you intend to buy.
