To judge whether a Steam discount is genuinely good, compare the current price with the game’s own recorded price history—not just the discount percentage. Steam’s Wishlist can alert you when a wishlisted game goes on sale; for price history and more flexible tracking, SteamDB and IsThereAnyDeal offer third-party tools.
What makes a Steam discount worth buying?
A sale percentage tells you how the displayed sale price compares with a reference price. It does not tell you whether the sale price is unusually low for that particular game. A game marked down by a large percentage may still cost more than it has during earlier sales, while a smaller reduction may match or beat its recorded low.
Use the game’s price-history chart to put the current offer in context. Check the actual price, how it compares with recorded lows, when those lows occurred, and how often the price has changed. This is more useful than treating the discount badge as a verdict. SteamDB’s game, bundle, and package pages include price tables and graphs; its Steam price-history service says it records price changes within minutes.

When asking, “How do I know if a discount is good?”, separate two questions: whether the current price is low compared with the game’s own past prices, and whether it is a price you are willing to pay. A chart can help with the first; only you can decide the second. An offer does not have to equal the historical low to be worthwhile to you, but knowing the difference can make the decision more informed.
Compare the current offer with its history
- Open the correct Steam store page. Confirm the game and the version or edition you intend to buy. A base game, deluxe edition, package, or bundle may have different prices and histories.
- Record the offer details. Note the displayed price and currency, discount, edition, and sale end date if Steam shows one. The price to assess is the amount for the product you actually want, not a different edition’s deal.
- Open a price-history chart. Look up the game on SteamDB or IsThereAnyDeal and inspect its history. SteamDB provides history for game, bundle, and package pages. IsThereAnyDeal also offers game price history.
- Compare amounts, not just percentages. Ask whether today’s price matches or beats the recorded low. If it does not, consider how far it is from that low and whether the difference matters to you.
- Check the timing and pattern. See how recent the low was and how frequently the chart shows price changes. A chart can show past behavior, but it cannot establish when the next discount will happen.
- Inspect bundles or packages when relevant. If you are considering a bundle, check its own history as well as the base game’s. SteamDB’s FAQ notes that a bundle can explain why a game’s apparent lowest price differs from the lowest price shown in its data.
- Decide whether to buy or wait. If the current price is acceptable for the edition you want, the history helps you understand the deal. If you are willing to wait, add the game to a notification service rather than assuming the next sale will beat today’s offer.
For a consistent comparison, write down the product, displayed price, currency, sale date or end date, and the relevant recorded low. Then make sure both prices refer to the same edition and the same kind of purchase. If one chart is for a bundle and another figure is for the base game, the numbers do not describe an identical offer. SteamDB’s pages provide history for games, bundles, and packages, so use the page that corresponds to the item under consideration.
SteamDB describes its price-history coverage as including all 41 Steam currencies, with data going back to 2012. This can provide a long reference window, but it is a description of the service’s coverage—not a promise that every game, package, currency, or historical price has identical data. Check the chart and product definition rather than assuming the broad coverage figure guarantees a complete record for every item.
Choose a price-tracking and alert method
Steam’s Wishlist is the straightforward option for native sale notifications. Steam Support says users can receive a notification when a wishlisted game goes on sale. It is distinct from price-history services: the Steam Support guidance reviewed documents sale alerts, not historical charts or custom price thresholds.
For a record of past prices or more alert controls, SteamDB and IsThereAnyDeal are third-party services, not Steam features. Their tools overlap, but they emphasize different workflows.

When choosing between them, compare the parts of the workflow that matter to you: how much price history is available, whether you want Steam-only tracking or deals across more stores, whether you want to import a Steam Wishlist, what alert controls are offered, and how the service handles regions and currencies. Also check that the alert or chart refers to the right edition, package, or bundle. The features listed above describe the services’ documented tools; they do not establish that any one tool is best for every buyer.
Use Steam Wishlist for a simple sale alert
Add a game you may want to your Steam Wishlist from its store page. Steam Support says the Wishlist can notify you when that game goes on sale. This is a useful low-effort option if a sale notification is enough and you do not need a chart or a custom alert rule.

The alert is most useful when you have not yet bought the game and want to know when its sale period starts.
The Wishlist alert answers a practical question—whether a game you want has gone on sale—without providing the historical comparison described above. If you want to know whether the sale price is near the game’s recorded low, pair the alert with a price-history chart. If you only need notification of a sale and prefer to keep the process within Steam, the built-in Wishlist may be enough.

Use SteamDB for Steam price history and a watchlist
SteamDB’s price-history pages provide tables and graphs for games, bundles, and packages. Its service says price changes are recorded within minutes, that users can create a watchlist, and that a Steam Wishlist can be imported manually. Its price-history coverage spans all 41 Steam currencies, with data going back to 2012. Those are SteamDB’s descriptions of its own service, not an independent measure of how much users save.
To track a title, find its SteamDB page and review the price chart and recorded-low information. For ongoing monitoring, use SteamDB’s watchlist; if you want to start from games already on Steam, its service says you can import your Wishlist manually. Check the page itself for the current controls and requirements, since service features may change.

SteamDB also provides sale filters and labels new historical lows and prices that match the lowest it has recorded on its live sales page. Those labels can help you spot candidates for closer inspection, but the live page changes as offers change. Read the underlying price and product details instead of treating a label as a guarantee about future pricing or a recommendation to buy.
SteamDB says it is not affiliated with Valve or Steam. Use it as an independent third-party reference for price history and tracking, and check Steam’s store page for the current offer that applies to your account. The distinction matters: SteamDB’s tracking features and recorded history are not the same thing as a Steam sale or a promise from Valve about upcoming discounts.
Use IsThereAnyDeal for configurable notifications
IsThereAnyDeal offers price history, a waitlist, customizable deal-notification rules, and Steam Wishlist import. That makes it an option if you want to organize games to watch and tailor notifications rather than rely only on Steam’s native sale alert. Its published onboarding information establishes these features, but it does not guarantee that every listed offer or retailer will be suitable in every region.
Before acting on an alert, open the offer and confirm it is for the game edition and store you intend to use. An alert means a tracked offer may meet the service’s criteria; it does not replace checking the final price and purchase conditions.

How to compare offers across stores safely
Price-history and notification services can help identify offers beyond Steam, but a lower displayed number is not automatically the better purchase. Make sure you are comparing the same game edition and that the offer is from a legitimate store. Then check the final checkout price, regional restrictions, and activation conditions before buying.
- Match the product. Confirm base game versus deluxe edition, package, or bundle. A lower price for a different product is not a like-for-like saving.
- Check the region. Verify that the offer applies to your location and that the game can be activated in your region.
- Check the complete price. Compare the final checkout amount in the relevant currency, rather than relying on a price shown before any checkout adjustments.
- Read the offer conditions. Make sure you understand activation requirements and any restrictions before purchasing.
The available feature descriptions establish that these services track prices and deals; they do not establish that every listing is appropriate for every buyer. Treat a listing as a lead to verify, not as a substitute for checking the seller and terms.

Cross-store price comparison adds another check beyond the chart: the cheapest listed price may not be usable for your account or may refer to a different version of the game. Confirm the store selling the offer, whether the key or purchase can be activated in your region, and the amount shown at checkout. If any of those details are unclear, do not treat the headline price as directly comparable with the Steam store price.

There is no single price number that settles every comparison. Keep the storefront region and currency consistent where possible, and compare the same product. A Steam historical low helps explain the history of a Steam price; it is not automatically the same thing as a price from another retailer with different availability or purchase conditions.
Read regional prices in context
Compare the price shown for your own Steam storefront region and account currency. Regional prices are not a simple, reliable instruction to switch an account’s country, and a price shown for another currency may not be available to you on the same terms.
In an article published March 31, 2026, SteamDB reported that Valve had published updated recommended pricing-conversion data covering 37 currencies and four region groups. SteamDB described three methods: multi-variable conversion, purchasing-power parity, and exchange-rate conversion. It also said developers can combine methods or set prices themselves rather than follow the recommendations, and that how often Valve would update the exchange-rate data was unclear.
These details describe SteamDB’s account of Valve’s recommendations; they do not show that every developer follows one method or that one country always has the lowest price. Regional price tables are useful context, but compare the storefront and currency that actually apply to your account.
The number of currencies and region groups in the March 2026 update describes the scope SteamDB reported for Valve’s recommended conversion data, not a ranking of which region has the best deal. Valve’s methods are recommendations, and developers can mix them or set their own prices. A price difference across currencies therefore does not by itself show what a particular developer will charge, or whether the price displayed elsewhere is available to you.
SteamDB linked to Steam’s official regional-pricing information in its 2026 article. For a buying decision, the practical point remains to use the Steam storefront region and account currency that apply to you. Treat regional comparisons as descriptive context, not as a reason to try to change the country associated with an account.
What a historical low can—and cannot—tell you
A recorded low tells you the lowest price a particular service has recorded under its data and product definitions. It can help answer whether today’s offer is unusually low relative to that record. It cannot guarantee that the same price will return, predict when another sale will begin, or prove that a future discount will be better.
SteamDB says publishers choose discounts and that it does not know in advance which games will be discounted or at what prices. A past sale pattern may help you understand how a game has been priced, but it is not a forecast. Pay attention to what the chart is measuring. A game page, package, and bundle can have different price histories, and SteamDB notes that a bundle can account for a difference between an apparent game low and the lowest price in its data. Check the relevant product page rather than assuming every “lowest price” label refers to an identical purchase.
That distinction is especially important when a sale page marks a new low or a price matching the lowest recorded amount. The label describes the service’s record for the product it is tracking at that time. Check whether the record refers to the base game, a package, or a bundle, and remember that the live list can change as offers come and go. A label is useful evidence about recorded history, not a forecast or a guarantee that another store has an equivalent offer.
Historical patterns can support a patient buying strategy, but they cannot answer exactly when a game will be discounted again.
