Compare a spot Ether ETF and a spot Solana ETF as separate, single-asset products—not as interchangeable funds or diversified crypto portfolios. First verify that each fund actually holds spot tokens, then examine its benchmark, total sponsor fee, staking policy, custody, creation and redemption process, trading liquidity, premium or discount to net asset value (NAV), and tax disclosures.
ETF shares trade in a brokerage account, while the fund and its service providers control the underlying tokens. That structure can simplify access, but it adds layers of fees, operational dependence, market-price deviations and tax questions. Use the current prospectus and your tax adviser’s guidance before placing an order.
What you are comparing: two different single-asset exposures
An Ether ETF seeks to track Ether (ETH), while a Solana ETF seeks to track Solana (SOL). Owning one does not diversify you across cryptoassets, and a lower-priced share or lower stated fee does not make one asset a substitute for the other. Their networks, market behavior, staking systems, custody arrangements and regulatory disclosures can differ materially.

Confirm that description in the latest prospectus rather than relying on a ticker, exchange listing or marketing headline.

How do I compare Ethereum and Solana ETFs?
Use the following order. It prevents a temporary fee promotion or an attractive staking headline from deciding the purchase before you understand what the fund owns.
- Verify the exposure. Confirm spot ETH or spot SOL holdings and identify any cash, futures, lending or other permitted assets.
- Read the benchmark definition. Record the reference-rate name, calculation time and valuation methodology used for NAV.
- Calculate the ongoing cost. Separate the current sponsor fee from waivers, caps, expiry dates and brokerage trading costs.
- Evaluate staking. Determine whether staking is allowed, how much may be staked, who performs it, how rewards are credited and what happens during lockups or interruptions.
- Check custody and fund mechanics. Identify the custodian, authorized participants and the creation/redemption process.
- Inspect trading conditions. Review spread, volume, exchange hours and the share price’s premium or discount to NAV on the date you plan to trade.
- Read tax and risk disclosures. Pay particular attention to staking rewards, taxable income without a cash payment and jurisdiction-specific rules.
Step 1: Confirm that the fund is genuinely spot
Read the investment objective
The objective should state that the trust seeks to provide exposure to the price of Ether or Solana by holding the token, less expenses. A futures-based product can have different roll costs, collateral income and tracking behavior even when its name contains “Ether” or “Solana.” If the objective permits several instruments, note the circumstances in which the manager can use them.
Check the holdings and creation process
Look for a description of the assets delivered when authorized participants create shares and receive when they redeem them. The prospectus should explain how the trust obtains and stores ETH or SOL and whether creations and redemptions are conducted in cash, in kind or through a combination. These details affect trading efficiency and the fund’s ability to keep its market price near NAV.
Representative products
| Fund | Asset and structure described by the issuer or filing | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| ETHA (iShares Ethereum Trust ETF) | Exposure to Ether’s price; listed on Nasdaq | Confirm the current prospectus and holdings before trading. |
| ETHB (iShares Staked Ethereum Trust ETF) | Ether price exposure plus staking rewards | Staking changes the strategy and risk profile; review the latest terms. |
| Bitwise Solana Staking ETF (BSOL) | Spot SOL exposure; staking is a secondary objective | The August 13, 2026 preliminary SEC-filed prospectus may be amended. |
| TSOL (21shares Solana ETF) | Spot SOL exposure and the ability to stake a portion of holdings | Verify current fee and distribution terms in the live prospectus. |
An exchange listing or SEC filing does not endorse an investment’s quality or suitability. It only describes the legal and trading framework under which the product is offered.
Step 2: Understand the benchmark and NAV
Why the reference rate matters
Spot crypto trades continuously across many venues. An ETF needs a repeatable method to calculate its NAV, so it uses a specified reference rate rather than whichever exchange price happens to appear on your screen. Differences in venue coverage, timing, weighting and market-disruption rules can produce a NAV that does not exactly match a particular exchange’s spot quote.
Rank #2
Examples of named benchmarks
- ETHA identifies the CME CF Ether Dollar Reference Rate – New York Variant.
- BSOL’s August 13, 2026 preliminary prospectus identifies the CME CF Solana – Dollar Reference Rate – New York Variant.
Record the benchmark’s calculation time and methodology from the current prospectus. A fund can hold the correct asset and still show tracking differences because its NAV is calculated at a defined time while ETH and SOL prices continue moving.
NAV is not the intraday share price
NAV is the per-share value calculated by the trust. The exchange price is set by buyers and sellers throughout the trading session. Strong demand can push shares above NAV (a premium); weak demand can push them below NAV (a discount). Creation and redemption mechanisms are intended to help arbitrage these differences, but they do not guarantee that your execution price equals NAV.

Step 3: Compare fees without being fooled by a waiver
Separate the sponsor fee from trading costs
The sponsor fee is deducted from fund assets and reduces returns over time. Your brokerage may also charge a spread or other transaction cost, and the bid-ask spread itself is a real cost even when a commission is zero. A headline fee does not include every cost of owning and trading the shares.
| Product | Stated fee information | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| ETHA | 0.25% sponsor fee | Treat this as the stated ongoing rate unless the latest prospectus says otherwise. |
| ETHB | 0.12% for the first $2.5 billion of assets during the first 12 months beginning March 12, 2026; assets above that threshold during the period pay 0.25%; stated fee after the waiver period is 0.25% | The 0.12% rate is temporary and capped by both time and assets. Do not project it beyond those terms. |
| BSOL | 0.20% annual sponsor fee in the August 13, 2026 preliminary prospectus | Confirm the latest filing because a preliminary filing can be amended. |
| TSOL | Current fee not established in the cited listing description | Use the live prospectus and statutory fee table rather than infer a rate from another Solana fund. |
Calculate the effect in dollars
For a simple estimate, multiply the average amount invested by the annual sponsor fee: $10,000 at 0.25% is approximately $25 for a full year before market movement and other expenses. Actual amounts vary with the fund’s daily assets, fee accrual and any waiver. A 0.12% promotional rate on the same amount would be approximately $12 during the period in which that waiver applies, not necessarily for the life of the investment.
Ask four fee questions
- When does the fee waiver begin and end?
- Is there an asset cap, and does the higher rate apply immediately to assets above it?
- Can the sponsor terminate or change the waiver?
- What other expenses appear in the prospectus, including custody, administration or extraordinary expenses?
Step 4: Treat staking as a separate risk decision
What staking does
Staking commits tokens to help validate a proof-of-stake network. The fund may receive protocol rewards, but it can also face validator failures, slashing, software problems, delays in unstaking, service-provider dependence and regulatory uncertainty. Rewards fluctuate and are not guaranteed yield.
Questions to ask before buying a staking fund
- Is staking permitted or required? A fund may stake all, some or none of its holdings.
- What proportion can be staked? A stated maximum is not the same as the percentage currently staked.
- Who operates the validators? Identify the validator, staking provider, custodian and any subcontractors.
- How long can assets be unavailable? Consider activation queues, unbonding periods and restrictions during a network event.
- How are rewards reflected? Rewards may increase the trust’s assets, offset expenses or be distributed as cash, depending on the product.
- Who bears losses? Read provisions for slashing, penalties, outages and provider default.
Ether staking example: ETHB
ETHB is described as providing Ether price exposure plus staking rewards. Its fee waiver is separate from its staking policy: the temporary 0.12% rate applies only to the first $2.5 billion of assets for the first 12 months beginning March 12, 2026, while the stated post-waiver fee is 0.25%. Compare those terms with the expected operational and tax consequences rather than assuming the lower temporary fee compensates for every additional risk.

BSOL’s August 13, 2026 preliminary prospectus names staking as a secondary objective, identifies Coinbase Custody and warns that staking can have tax consequences. Because the filing is preliminary, confirm any amended filing and the current prospectus before relying on its limits or procedures.
Cboe’s listing description for TSOL says the fund maintains spot SOL exposure and may stake a portion of its holdings. It specifically identifies operational, technological, regulatory and counterparty risks. 21shares describes quarterly cash rewards as variable, net of fund expenses and not guaranteed. Verify the live distribution policy, eligibility requirements and fee schedule; a quarterly payment is not the same as a fixed interest rate.
Are Ether ETF staking rewards worth the extra risk?
There is no universal answer. Staking may improve gross asset exposure when rewards exceed the incremental costs and risks, but rewards can fall, be consumed by expenses, be delayed, or create taxable income without a corresponding cash distribution. Investors who prioritize the simplest price exposure may prefer a non-staking structure; investors seeking rewards must be willing to evaluate validator, liquidity, legal and tax risks continuously.
Step 5: Examine custody and shareholder rights
ETF shareholders own shares in a trust, not individually controlled ETH or SOL. You cannot normally withdraw the fund’s tokens to a personal wallet, choose a validator, or sign blockchain transactions. The custodian holds the assets under the trust’s procedures, while authorized participants create and redeem large blocks of shares.

Custody checklist
- Name of the digital-asset custodian and any sub-custodian.
- Cold-storage or other safeguarding practices described in the prospectus.
- Insurance language and exclusions; do not assume custody insurance covers market losses.
- Procedures for forks, airdrops, network halts, key loss and cyber incidents.
- Responsibilities of the sponsor, custodian, administrator and authorized participants.
The Bitwise Solana prospectus states that shares are not FDIC insured and are not guaranteed by a government agency. That is a useful reminder that an exchange-listed wrapper is not a bank deposit or a government-backed security.
Step 6: Check liquidity, spreads and premium or discount
Use current, dated trading data
Assets and volume change every day. When reviewing an issuer page or market-data screen, record the date and time, average volume, quoted bid-ask spread and the share price relative to NAV. A product with large assets can still have a wide spread at a particular moment, while a smaller fund can trade efficiently during active hours.
Execution practices
- Prefer a limit order when the spread is wide or the crypto market is moving quickly.
- Check the quote immediately before submitting and again after execution.
- Avoid assuming that a zero-commission trade is cost-free; the spread and premium or discount still matter.
- Consider exchange hours. Crypto trades around the clock, but ETF shares trade only while their listing exchange is open.
- For a large order, consider splitting it or using a time when displayed liquidity is deeper.
Intraday NAV estimates can be imperfect because the underlying market is continuous and the trust’s official NAV is calculated on a schedule. A temporary premium or discount can therefore persist even when the underlying token price is unchanged during the exchange session.
Step 7: Read tax and regulatory disclosures
Tax treatment depends on the fund structure, distributions, your account type and your jurisdiction. Do not generalize from one issuer to another. The prospectus and annual tax reporting are the controlling documents for the product, while a tax professional can address your circumstances.
Staking-specific tax questions
- Can rewards be treated as taxable income when earned, even if the fund does not distribute cash?
- How are expenses deducted from rewards?
- Are distributions reported as income, capital gains or another category?
- What happens if rewards are delayed, forfeited, slashed or received in another asset?
- How are sales of ETF shares reported compared with direct token transactions?
BSOL’s cited filing warns that staking may have tax consequences. That warning is not a calculation of your liability; it is a reason to read the current tax section and obtain individualized advice.

Decision framework: which differences matter most?
If you want straightforward price exposure
Prioritize a clearly defined spot mandate, transparent benchmark, dependable custody and tight trading conditions. A non-staking fund may be easier to understand because it avoids validator and reward-accounting questions, but it still carries the full volatility of the underlying token.
If you want potential staking rewards
Compare net rewards, not advertised gross rates. Investigate validator operations, unbonding, slashing, reward timing, expenses and tax treatment. A fund that stakes a larger portion may have greater reward potential and greater operational exposure.
If costs are your main concern
Compare the fee after any waiver expires, then add realistic spread and premium/discount costs. ETHB’s 0.12% introductory rate, for example, is limited to the first $2.5 billion of assets for 12 months beginning March 12, 2026; it should not be compared with a permanent fee as though both rates lasted indefinitely.
If you trade frequently
Liquidity, spread, execution quality and exchange hours may matter more than a small annual-fee difference. Use dated quotes and limit orders, and avoid buying a large premium to NAV.
If you hold in a taxable account
Read the tax section before buying a staking product. Potential income without a cash distribution can create a liquidity problem at tax time, and product-specific reporting may differ from direct ownership of ETH or SOL.
Risks every buyer should accept before investing
- Asset volatility: ETH and SOL can lose substantial or all of their value.
- Tracking risk: Fees, benchmark timing, trading costs and custody events can make fund returns differ from token returns.
- Market-price risk: Shares can trade above or below NAV.
- Operational risk: Custodians, administrators, validators and authorized participants can experience outages or failures.
- Regulatory risk: Rules affecting cryptoassets, staking and fund operations can change.
- Tax risk: Your tax result may differ from the fund’s stated objective and may arise before cash is distributed.
- Concentration risk: A single-asset ETF does not provide a diversified crypto portfolio.
Neither an exchange listing nor a registration statement is a recommendation that the product is suitable for you. Review the latest prospectus, consider your time horizon and risk capacity, and seek professional tax or investment advice for a personal decision.
