The best soybean offer is the one that leaves you with the highest reliable net return for the same delivery obligation—not necessarily the bid with the highest cash price or strongest basis. Compare each buyer’s cash bid, the matching Chicago soybean futures contract, delivery terms, quality requirements, and all costs to deliver. Then verify the written bid with the buyer before you commit.
Start with the two numbers in every soybean bid
A soybean cash bid is the price a buyer offers for physical soybeans at a stated location, quality, quantity, and delivery period. The bid usually reflects two components:
- Futures component: the relevant Chicago Board of Trade soybean futures price within CME Group.
- Basis: the local cash price minus that futures price.
USDA Agricultural Marketing Service (USDA-AMS) states the calculation directly: “Basis is calculated as the difference between the Bid field and the Futures Price field.” In formula form:
Basis = local cash bid − relevant soybean futures price

For example, if a buyer’s illustrative cash bid is $10.80 per bushel and the matching futures price is $11.00, the basis is −$0.20 per bushel. A bid of $10.95 against futures at $11.05 has a basis of −$0.10. The second example has a stronger basis, but you still must check delivery costs, timing, grade, and contract terms before deciding which sale is better.
Basis is not an additional payment added to futures. It is the difference between the two prices. A negative basis means the local cash bid is below futures; a positive basis means it is above futures.
Use the futures contract that matches delivery
The basis is meaningful only when the cash bid and futures reference use the same delivery timeframe. USDA-AMS describes the closest contract month as the basis reference, while Iowa State Extension describes using the nearest-to-maturity futures contract. In practice, identify the delivery window on the buyer’s bid and then confirm which soybean futures month applies.

| Cash-bid detail | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Delivery period | Exact date, date range, or “current”/spot delivery language | A harvest bid and a winter delivery bid may use different futures months. |
| Futures reference | Contract month and quote timestamp | Using the wrong month can make the calculated basis appear stronger or weaker than it really is. |
| Bid type | Origin elevator, destination, arrival, or forward-delivery bid | Different freight responsibility and timing make the prices non-equivalent. |
| Pricing status | Unpriced contract, fixed cash price, or futures-plus-basis contract | The amount of price risk you retain depends on what has already been fixed. |
Do not calculate basis from a futures quote taken hours or days away from the cash bid unless you clearly label the result as an approximation. Ideally, record the cash bid and futures price at the same time and use the futures month named by the buyer or report.
Gather equivalent information before comparing elevators
Write down the details for every offer in one worksheet. A cash price without its conditions is not a complete bid.
- Buyer and facility: name, physical location, and contact person.
- Bid date and time: include the time zone if you are comparing distant markets.
- Delivery location: the point where title and risk transfer, not simply the buyer’s headquarters.
- Delivery window: specific dates, month, or arrival requirement.
- Commodity: soybeans, with any specification for conventional, food-grade, identity-preserved, or other contract type.
- Grade and quality: moisture, test weight, damage, foreign material, splits, odor, and discount or premium schedules.
- Quantity: minimum or maximum load, contract total, and whether the bid applies to all bushels or only a limited amount.
- Price basis: flat cash, futures plus basis, or another pricing formula.
- Futures month: the contract used to establish the basis.
- Deductions and additions: drying, storage, handling, checkoff, testing, dockage, quality discounts, premiums, and other stated charges.
- Freight responsibility: who pays hauling and whether the quoted price is at the farm, elevator, processor, river terminal, or another destination.
- Payment terms: payment timing, delayed-payment provisions, and any conditions attached to settlement.
Keep origin and destination bids separate. USDA-AMS distinguishes origin elevator bids from destination 30-day-to-arrive bids. A destination bid may look higher because the buyer is assuming freight or because the delivery obligation is different. It is not an apples-to-apples comparison until you put both offers on the same delivery basis.
Calculate basis step by step
- Copy the buyer’s exact cash bid. Use the quoted unit, usually dollars per bushel, and note whether the price is before or after stated deductions.
- Identify the futures month. Ask the buyer which soybean contract month underlies the quote if it is not shown.
- Record the matching futures price. Use a quote for that contract at approximately the same time as the cash bid.
- Subtract futures from cash. Cash bid minus futures price equals basis. Preserve the sign: $10.80 − $11.00 = −$0.20.
- Repeat for every buyer. Do not use one market’s futures quote for another market’s bid if the quotes were made at materially different times.
- Record the result with its conditions. A basis number without location, delivery period, quality, and timestamp cannot be used safely as a stand-alone comparison.
USDA-AMS’s Grain Basis dataset includes bid, futures price, nearby futures month, basis, market type, and location fields. Those fields are useful for checking how a published quotation is constructed, but a published value may not be the buyer’s live offer when you are ready to sell.

| Offer | Cash bid | Matching futures | Calculated basis | Delivery condition |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Elevator A | $10.80/bu | $11.00/bu | −$0.20/bu | Delivered to the elevator during the stated harvest window |
| Elevator B | $10.95/bu | $11.05/bu | −$0.10/bu | Delivered to a farther destination during a later window |
Elevator B has both a higher flat cash bid and a stronger basis in this illustration. That still does not prove it is the better sale. If the destination requires substantially more hauling, imposes stricter quality discounts, or requires delivery when your storage and labor costs are high, Elevator A could leave more money per bushel after costs. Conversely, if the second destination is close to your farm and its later delivery fits your equipment and storage plan, B may be preferable.
Comparing the two components is still valuable. The cash price tells you what the contract pays under its stated conditions. The basis helps you see the local differential after removing the futures market level. A cash-price difference can result from different futures months, not just from a buyer offering a stronger local basis.
Convert every bid to a net return
After calculating basis, adjust each offer for the costs and benefits that apply to your farm. Use the same bushel basis and time period for every line item.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →| Net-return item | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Hauling | What is the cost per bushel or load to reach the delivery point, including fuel, labor, permits, and waiting time? |
| Storage | Will the buyer charge storage, or will on-farm storage tie up capacity and capital until delivery? |
| Interest or carrying cost | How long will grain or a priced contract be held, and what financing cost applies? |
| Handling and drying | Are drying, aeration, receiving, testing, or elevation charges deducted from the quoted price? |
| Quality adjustments | What are the moisture, damage, foreign-material, test-weight, and other discount or premium rules? |
| Contract premiums | Does a specialty or identity-preserved contract add value, and what segregation or testing cost does it require? |
| Timing and risk | Could a missed delivery appointment, capacity limit, or quality change alter the amount received? |
A simple comparison is:
Estimated net return = quoted cash bid + premiums − discounts − hauling − storage − drying − handling − carrying costs
Use the buyer’s written schedule for each deduction. There is no universal charge schedule: costs vary by facility, distance, moisture, contract, and season. If a charge is not stated, ask whether it exists rather than assuming it is zero.
Check whether the bid is current and comparable
Public quotations are useful benchmarks, not guaranteed executable offers. USDA-AMS market reports have different daily or weekly frequencies, and the national Grain Basis dataset is published weekly. Its dataset page shows temporal coverage beginning in 2007 and displayed a last-update date of July 23, 2026 when consulted. A displayed or downloaded value can therefore differ from the buyer’s live price.
USDA-AMS State Grain Reports provide a directory of state-level reports, with a mix of daily and weekly products. Select the state and market report that actually covers your delivery area. Check the report’s metadata for collection frequency, market type, delivery language, and the date of the quotation.
The North Carolina Cash Grain Bids report on USDA-AMS My Market News describes daily price collection, periodic verification by reporters, and reporter recertification every two years. Those statements apply to that report page; do not assume every state report uses identical procedures.

Use historical basis as context, not a forecast
A current basis becomes more informative when you compare it with observations from the same location or reporting district and a similar point in the marketing year. Iowa State Extension’s soybean-basis material presents regional and historical information for Iowa and selected nearby markets, including average, maximum, and minimum basis across recent marketing years. Its analysis compares cash prices and futures on a specified weekday, uses the closest delivery-month contract, and notes that quotations can span several cents; its tables use the midpoint of the quoted range.
That methodology creates two important limits:
- A regional midpoint is not the offer available at your particular elevator.
- A historical average or range describes what happened in earlier marketing years; it does not guarantee where basis will move next.
For a useful comparison, place today’s basis beside the same market’s observations for a comparable harvest, winter, spring, or summer period. Keep the delivery month, quality assumptions, and market definition consistent. If the historical source covers a reporting district rather than your facility, label it as a regional reference.

Basis is local and changes over time because local cash-market conditions do not move in lockstep with futures. USDA-AMS identifies several influences:
Local supply
When harvest delivers a large volume into elevators, processors, or terminals, available nearby soybeans can increase faster than local demand. Cash prices may fall relative to futures, producing a weaker basis. This is a tendency, not a rule for every location or day.
Demand
A processor, exporter, feed buyer, or other user needing soybeans promptly may raise its cash bid. Immediate demand can lift cash prices relative to futures and strengthen basis.
Storage availability
Limited space can pressure bids when facilities need to move grain quickly. Ample available storage can change the value of delivery timing and the basis offered for later windows.

Market location and delivery terms
Two facilities in the same broad region can quote different bases because their freight routes, buyers, storage positions, and delivery requirements differ. A destination bid may incorporate transportation that an origin bid leaves to the grower.
Because these forces interact, a stronger or weaker historical pattern should guide questions, not serve as a promise of the next price move.
Compare nearby markets without ignoring freight
Calling several local elevators can reveal whether a bid is competitive, but distance alone does not identify the best alternative. Put each market on a delivered-to-you or delivered-to-buyer basis that reflects your actual costs.
Recommended Free Tools
- List facilities that can accept your crop during the required period.
- Record each facility’s cash bid, futures month, delivery window, quality rules, and contract quantity.
- Estimate the cost and time of hauling from your farm to each location.
- Subtract storage, drying, handling, and other documented charges.
- Compare the resulting net return and the operational risk of meeting the contract.
Extension guidance identifies local elevators as relevant comparison points and notes that differences between delivery-month futures contracts reflect storage and interest between contract months. Therefore, a later-delivery bid should be evaluated with its carrying costs rather than judged solely by its displayed cash price.

Comparing an origin bid with a destination bid
Problem: Freight and delivery responsibility differ, so the prices are not equivalent.
Correction: Identify where title transfers and who pays transportation before ranking the bids.
Ignoring quote timing
Problem: Futures and cash markets can move between the times you record them.
Correction: Timestamp both figures and ask the buyer to confirm the live basis.
Treating a regional average as a firm offer
Problem: Published ranges and midpoints may not reflect your facility, grade, or available space.
Correction: Use public data for context, then obtain a facility-specific written quote.
Assuming a stronger basis guarantees a better sale
Problem: Basis is only one component of the cash price and says nothing by itself about hauling, storage, or quality deductions.
Correction: Compare the complete net-return worksheet and the futures component together.
A printable soybean-bid checklist
- Have I recorded the buyer, facility, date, and exact quote time?
- Are the commodity, grade, quality, and quantity requirements equivalent?
- Is each offer origin, destination, arrival, spot, or forward delivery?
- What are the exact delivery dates and receiving conditions?
- Which soybean futures month underlies each bid?
- Did I calculate basis as cash bid minus the matching futures price?
- Were cash and futures values observed at comparable times?
- What hauling, drying, storage, handling, testing, and quality charges apply?
- What premiums, deductions, payment terms, and contract risks apply?
- How does the current basis compare with the same market and season historically?
- Has the buyer confirmed that the bid is still available for my required bushels?
How to decide whether to sell now or store
Basis comparison helps explain a bid, but basis alone cannot determine whether to sell immediately, store, or use a later delivery contract. Make that decision by comparing:
- the current flat cash price;
- the futures component and delivery-month spread;
- the current and expected delivery basis, without assuming the expectation will occur;
- on-farm or commercial storage charges;
- interest or other carrying costs;
- handling, drying, shrink, quality, and transportation costs;
- your cash-flow needs, available space, labor, and ability to meet the later contract.
A later bid must improve enough to cover the costs and risks of waiting. A historical basis pattern can provide context for that calculation, but it cannot remove price, quality, transportation, or contract risk.
Where to obtain public comparison data
- USDA-AMS Grain Basis dataset: soybean bid, relevant futures price, nearby futures month, basis, market type, and location fields; weekly schedule and temporal coverage beginning in 2007.
- USDA-AMS State Grain Reports: state-specific daily and weekly grain-bid products. Select the report that covers your market and read its metadata.
- USDA-AMS My Market News: individual report pages such as the North Carolina Cash Grain Bids report, which describes its own collection and verification practices.
- Iowa State Extension July Soybean Basis: regional and historical soybean-basis information for Iowa and selected nearby markets, useful for illustrating seasonal and location comparisons.
These sources can organize and contextualize quotes, but they cannot identify the best bid for an individual farm without the farm’s location, delivery timing, grade, quantity, hauling and storage costs, and written contract terms.
