To compare smartphone battery life, match measured runtime to the way you use a phone. Treat the printed mAh figure as battery-size context, not an endurance score. Compare the same activity—calls, cellular data, web browsing, video, gaming or standby—under similar brightness, network, refresh-rate and software conditions. Record the test method and date, because a newer composite score may not be comparable with an older one.
A larger battery can help, but display efficiency, modem behavior, processor and GPU load, sensors, drivers, signal strength, temperature and background software determine how quickly that stored energy is consumed.
Why mAh does not tell you how long a phone lasts
mAh means milliampere-hours: the amount of electrical charge a battery can theoretically deliver at a specified test condition. Runtime depends on both stored energy and the phone’s power draw. Qualcomm describes the relationship as battery life being energy capacity in watt-hours divided by power consumption in watts.
Two phones with the same mAh rating can therefore run for different lengths of time. Battery voltage also differs, so comparing current capacity alone can mislead. A 5,000 mAh battery rated at 3.85 volts stores about 19.25 watt-hours (5,000 × 3.85 ÷ 1,000), while the voltage and usable energy of another 5,000 mAh pack may not be identical. Manufacturer ratings can also use different conventions, such as typical and rated capacity.
Use watt-hours when a manufacturer provides them, but still prioritize measured runtime. Watt-hours describe the energy reservoir; runtime tests show how the complete phone converts that energy into useful work.
The phone is a complete power system
Battery endurance is the combined result of the display, application processor, graphics processor, cellular modem, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth radios, cameras, location sensors, storage, drivers and operating-system scheduling. A newer chipset name or a larger battery cannot predict the result by itself. An efficient display at a lower refresh rate may offset a smaller battery, while a bright high-refresh panel or weak cellular signal can erase a capacity advantage.
Start with your own usage pattern
There is no single “best battery-life phone” for every person. A commuter who makes cellular calls, a traveler watching downloaded video and a player running a demanding game stress different components. Choose the test that resembles your day before looking at a blended score.

Calls and cellular coverage
Voice calls keep the modem and audio system active. Cellular conditions matter more than they do in a Wi-Fi-only browsing test: a phone working at the edge of coverage may use substantially more power while maintaining a connection. Look for a cellular-call result or a test that clearly states its network conditions. Do not substitute a Wi-Fi web score when your concern is all-day calling on mobile networks.
Web, messaging and social apps
Web testing usually combines display use, scrolling, radio activity and short processor bursts. It is a useful proxy for reading, messaging and social feeds, but check whether the test uses Wi-Fi or cellular data, what brightness and refresh rate were selected, and whether pages are scripted or cached.
Streaming and local video
Video playback stresses the display and hardware decoder, while streaming adds network activity. A continuous video-loop result is not equivalent to a mixed-use daily estimate. For a video-heavy day, compare video results made with the same resolution, brightness, network and playback source.

Gaming
Gaming loads the GPU and CPU, often holds a high refresh rate and can raise the phone’s temperature. Compare a gaming result only when the game or workload, frame-rate target, graphics settings, refresh rate and thermal conditions are known. A phone that wins a web test can lose badly in sustained gaming.

Standby and light use
Standby measures background drain while the screen is mostly off. It reflects modem reception, push notifications, account synchronization, location services and software behavior. Standby can dominate the experience of a light user, but it should not be blended with active screen-on results without disclosure.
Understand the test method before comparing numbers
A test number is meaningful only with its controls. At minimum, record the activity, brightness, network, refresh rate, content, workload, temperature and background settings.
Brightness must be expressed in nits
“50% brightness” is not a universal setting: displays have different maximum outputs and nonlinear sliders. Prefer tests that report measured brightness in nits. GSMArena’s Battery Life Test 2.0 uses 200 nits for its screen-on scenarios, providing a repeatable reference level. Qualcomm has likewise used 200 nits as an example of a standardized, usable brightness. A result taken at maximum brightness should not be compared directly with one taken at 200 nits.
Network conditions change modem power
Wi-Fi strength, cellular band, signal quality, data traffic and handoffs all affect consumption. Note whether the phone is in airplane mode, on Wi-Fi, or connected to a cellular network, and whether the test location and signal were controlled. A laboratory result can rank phones consistently without predicting the same hours in a basement, train or rural area.

High refresh rates draw more power when the display is updating continuously, while adaptive modes may lower the rate during static content. Resolution, screen technology, dark-mode behavior and the proportion of white content also affect draw. “Standard” or “high” refresh labels are not enough; record the actual setting used.

Workload and background activity
Scripted pages, a fixed video loop and a repeatable game scene improve comparisons. Background downloads, notifications, cloud backups and account sync can distort a run. A credible test states what was disabled or left running.
Temperature and ambient light
Heat increases leakage and can trigger performance throttling; cold can temporarily reduce available capacity. Ambient light sensors may raise display brightness in a changing room. GSMArena notes that network environment, background processes, ambient temperature and available light can affect results. Treat small differences as uncertain when conditions are not tightly matched.
Keep test generations separate
Test publishers change formulas. GSMArena’s older endurance rating combined standby with a mix of calls, web browsing and video. Its 2023 Battery Life Test 2.0 uses four active scenarios and excludes standby from the new score. GSMArena explicitly says the new and old ratings are measured in hours but are incomparable because the new score assumes only active use.

How to compare two phones fairly
- Define the dominant task. Choose calls, web, video, gaming, standby or a realistic mixture based on your routine.
- Collect matching measurements. Use results from the same publisher and test generation where possible. A continuous video loop and a mixed-use estimate answer different questions.
- Normalize the controls. Check measured brightness in nits, network type and signal, refresh rate, resolution, content, workload, temperature and background activity.
- Compare the task result first. If you game for two hours daily, give the gaming result more weight than a standby figure.
- Use a blended score as a summary. Confirm what activities it includes and whether its mix resembles your day. GSMArena allows readers to adjust the mix in its 2023 Active Use Score; its stated mix gives slightly more emphasis to web and video.
- Use battery capacity only as context. Check watt-hours or voltage-qualified capacity when available, but do not let mAh decide the ranking.
- Record the date and software version. Updates can change modem, display and background behavior, and test pages can be revised.
A practical comparison worksheet
| Axis | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Primary task | Calls, cellular data, web, video, gaming or standby | Different components dominate each workload. |
| Runtime | Hours and minutes for the matching scenario | Directly answers the activity you perform. |
| Brightness | Measured nits, not only a slider percentage | Normalizes display power more reliably. |
| Network | Wi-Fi or cellular, band and signal conditions | Radio power can change sharply with reception. |
| Refresh rate | Fixed or adaptive setting and actual rate | Higher updates can increase display draw. |
| Test version | Publisher, methodology name, version and date | Prevents mixing incompatible scores. |
| Standby treatment | Included, excluded or reported separately | Idle drain is not the same as active use. |
| Battery energy | Wh, or mAh with rated voltage | Provides capacity context without pretending to be runtime. |
Reading composite scores without being misled
A composite score is useful for shortlisting when its activity mix resembles your day. It is not a universal battery-life grade. A score with substantial web and video time may overstate the relevance for a gamer, while one that includes long standby periods may suit a light user better than an active commuter.
Check whether the score is an average, a weighted model or a fixed sequence. Ask whether the phone stayed connected to a network, whether the screen was on throughout, and whether the score includes idle intervals. If those details are absent, use the number as a rough signal rather than a precise prediction.

Worked example: reading a published phone result
GSMArena’s buyer’s guide, last updated May 3, 2026, lists these results for the OnePlus 15. They are measurements from GSMArena’s test, not independent reproductions:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

| Scenario | Reported runtime |
|---|---|
| Active Use Score | 23 hours 7 minutes |
| Calls | 39 hours 12 minutes |
| Web | 21 hours 48 minutes |
| Video | 32 hours 57 minutes |
| Game | 13 hours 5 minutes |
The figures answer different questions. The 39-hour call result should not be read as a promise of 39 hours for a normal day, and the 13-hour game result is the relevant comparison for sustained gaming. The 23-hour-7-minute Active Use Score is useful only alongside its active-use methodology and activity mix. It should not be compared with an older GSMArena endurance rating that included standby.
Official battery labels and independent tests
European Union rules specify a battery-life test sequence involving calls, web browsing and video playback. A regulatory result can provide a consistent reference point for products covered by that rule, but it is not automatically interchangeable with an independent reviewer’s test. State the region, edition and method whenever you quote an official label, and check the current legal text before relying on detailed regulatory clauses.
Industry measurement documents such as GSMA TS.09 describe representative battery-life and current-consumption measurements under specified technology and test parameters. Such documents are useful for understanding controlled measurement, but a standard document does not turn a capacity figure into a real-world guarantee.
Separate endurance from charging convenience
Fast charging reduces the time needed to recover a charge; it does not prove that the phone lasts longer between charges. Compare autonomy and charging as separate decisions. For endurance, use matched runtime tests. For convenience, check charging time, charger availability, charging limits and whether the phone can sustain your schedule with short top-ups. A phone with lower runtime but very fast, reliable charging may suit one person, while another may prefer longer unplugged use.
Run a useful test at home
Your own repeatable test can complement published results, especially when your network, apps or brightness differ from laboratory conditions. It will not be as controlled as a professional bench test, so use it to compare phones under identical conditions rather than to claim an absolute industry rating.
- Update and reset conditions. Install the same operating-system update level where possible, charge both phones fully, and allow indexing or initial setup to finish.
- Choose one workload. For example, loop the same downloaded video, browse the same scripted pages, or play the same game at the same graphics and frame-rate settings.
- Fix the display. Set the same refresh-rate mode and, if you can measure it, the same brightness in nits. Disable adaptive brightness for the run.
- Fix connectivity. Use the same Wi-Fi access point or the same cellular location. Keep Bluetooth, location and notifications identical.
- Control temperature. Start at the same room temperature, remove cases that create unequal heat retention, and avoid charging during the test.
- Measure consistently. Record start and end battery percentages, elapsed time, screen-on time and any interruption. Repeat the run if a notification, update or thermal event changes the workload.
- Report the conditions. Include the phone software, brightness, refresh rate, network, content, temperature and test date with the result.
Common comparison mistakes and fixes
- Mistake: ranking by mAh. Fix: compare watt-hours for capacity context and measured runtime for the chosen task.
- Mistake: treating a blended score as a personal guarantee. Fix: inspect the activity mix and prioritize the scenario that dominates your day.
- Mistake: comparing slider percentages. Fix: look for measured nits.
- Mistake: mixing Wi-Fi and cellular results. Fix: compare the same network type and note signal conditions.
- Mistake: ignoring refresh rate. Fix: match fixed or adaptive settings and record the actual rate.
- Mistake: mixing test generations. Fix: keep methodology versions and dates together; do not combine GSMArena’s old endurance rating with Battery Life Test 2.0.
- Mistake: assuming fast charging equals long battery life. Fix: evaluate charge time separately from unplugged runtime.
- Mistake: treating a lab result as a guarantee. Fix: qualify expectations for signal, temperature, ambient light, background processes, software and personal settings.
A decision rule for “which phone has the best battery life?”
Call a phone the best choice only after it wins on the task you actually perform, under a comparable test setup. If two phones are close, prefer the one with the clearer methodology, stronger result in your dominant workload and a test version you can compare consistently. Use the balanced score as a tie-breaker, then consider capacity, charging convenience, software support and network behavior. This approach produces a useful answer for your day instead of a ranking based on one number printed on a box.
