The most reliable way to compare semiconductor stocks is to analyze revenue, gross margin, and inventory together across several reporting periods, then adjust for each company’s products, manufacturing model, end markets, and position in the semiconductor cycle. No single percentage identifies the best company.

Start with genuinely comparable businesses. Trace revenue growth to prices, volumes, mix, acquisitions, customer inventory, and seasonality. Explain every gross-margin change using operating and accounting drivers. Then test inventory against sales and management’s disclosures about excess or obsolete products. The result is a business comparison, not a mechanical buy-or-sell signal.

What revenue, gross margin, and inventory each tell you

These metrics answer different questions. Revenue shows the scale of demand captured by a company. Gross margin shows how much of that revenue remains after the direct cost of products and production. Inventory shows resources committed to products that have not yet been sold and can reveal whether supply and demand are moving into or out of balance.

Metric Useful question Why the number can mislead
Revenue Is the business growing, shrinking, or changing mix over several periods? A total can hide weakness in a product line, a price change, an acquisition, customer destocking, or seasonal timing.
Gross margin How much gross profit is produced by each dollar of revenue, and is that rate improving? Mix, prices, yields, utilization, costs, reserves, and revenue with unusual cost structures can move the percentage.
Inventory Is production and purchasing aligned with sales and expected demand? A higher balance may reflect deliberate stock-building, longer production stages, customer requirements, or a different manufacturing model rather than a problem.

Read the three metrics as a connected operating story. Revenue growth with sharply rising inventory may mean preparation for stronger demand, or it may mean products are not moving. Falling inventory with falling revenue can indicate healthy destocking after an excess-supply period, or it can signal production cuts that will constrain future sales. The filings and management explanations determine which interpretation is credible.

1. Build a comparable semiconductor peer group

Before calculating growth rates, define what is being compared. A memory producer, an analog-chip supplier, a fabless designer, and an integrated manufacturer can have very different economics even when all are called semiconductor companies.

Match products and end markets

List the principal products and the markets that purchase them. Consumer electronics, automobiles, industrial equipment, communications infrastructure, data centers, and other applications can have different demand cycles and pricing behavior. A company exposed to one market may grow while another semiconductor business contracts, so a sector-wide label is not enough.

Identify the manufacturing model

Record whether production is primarily internal, outsourced, or a combination. Internal fabrication brings fixed costs, capacity-utilization effects, and long lead times for equipment and facilities. Outsourcing changes the cost structure and may shift inventory ownership or timing. Companies can therefore report different margins and inventory balances while serving similar customers.

Check customers and geography

Note customer concentration, geographic exposure, and any disclosed distribution structure. Texas Instruments says it sells to more than 100,000 customers, a company-reported figure that illustrates broad reach rather than an industry statistic. A peer with a handful of very large customers will have a different order pattern and negotiating dynamic.

Mark seasonality and fiscal calendars

Record each company’s fiscal year, quarter-end dates, and recurring seasonal patterns. Compare the same fiscal periods where possible. Texas Instruments has described historically weaker sequential revenue growth in its first and fourth quarters; that pattern is specific to its business and should not be applied automatically to every issuer.

2. Compare revenue over several periods

One quarter is a poor basis for a semiconductor comparison. Use at least several annual periods and a sequence of quarterly periods, while keeping reported results separate from management outlook.

  1. Collect reported revenue. Enter annual revenue and quarterly revenue from each company’s filings. Keep currency, fiscal-year labels, and consolidated versus segment scope consistent.
  2. Calculate direction and pace. Measure year-over-year annual growth and sequential quarterly movement. Also compare the latest quarter with the same quarter in the prior year to reduce seasonal distortion.
  3. Decompose the change. Read management discussion for average selling prices, unit volume, product mix, acquisitions, divestitures, and customer inventory adjustments.
  4. Separate demand from timing. Identify whether orders reflect end-market consumption, distributor replenishment, customer destocking, or a temporary shipment schedule.
  5. Label outlook separately. A forecast or target is management’s expectation, not a reported result. Keep it in a different column from historical revenue.
Revenue question Evidence to look for Interpretation risk
Is growth broad? Segment, product, and end-market revenue disclosures A strong total can be driven by one product or acquisition while another line weakens.
Are prices or volumes driving growth? Average selling price, unit, and mix commentary Price-led growth may not imply more units or durable demand.
Is the change cyclical? Customer inventory, order trends, supply conditions, and prior-cycle comparisons A rebound from a low base can look spectacular without returning to a normal run rate.
Is the quarter seasonal? Company-specific historical quarter patterns and fiscal calendar Sequential comparisons can exaggerate normal seasonal changes.

A revenue increase can coexist with weaker performance in a specific product line. Conversely, a decline may reflect industry destocking or an unfavorable mix rather than permanent loss of competitiveness. The explanation in the filing is more informative than the headline growth rate alone.

3. Explain gross-margin changes instead of ranking percentages

Gross margin is calculated as gross profit divided by revenue. Compare both the level and the direction, then identify the operating reasons for the movement. The company with the highest percentage is not automatically the strongest investment or business.

Separate the main margin drivers

  • Average selling prices: Higher or lower prices change gross profit per unit, but pricing can also alter demand and product mix.
  • Product mix: Different chips, package types, markets, and licensing or other revenue can carry very different cost structures.
  • Manufacturing yields: More usable chips from each wafer spread production costs over more units; yield problems do the opposite.
  • Materials and production costs: Wafer, packaging, labor, energy, freight, and other inputs affect the cost of revenue.
  • Capacity utilization and fixed-cost absorption: A factory running below practical capacity can leave fixed costs allocated over fewer units.
  • Inventory reserves and write-downs: Excess, slow-moving, or obsolete products can create charges that reduce gross profit.
  • Manufacturing operations: Internal fabrication and outsourced production expose companies to different cost timing and utilization effects.

Silicon Laboratories identifies average selling prices, product mix, material costs, yields, inventory write-downs, and manufacturing-operations costs among the factors that can affect its margin. That disclosure is a useful checklist, not a universal formula for every semiconductor issuer.

Use margin bridges when companies provide them

If a filing explains that margin moved because of mix, pricing, utilization, or a reserve, record the driver and its direction. A two-point decline caused by a temporary inventory write-down has a different implication from a two-point decline caused by sustained price pressure or permanently higher production costs.

Do not turn management targets into sector benchmarks

Company targets are goals, not independent standards. Diodes’ 2025 filing describes its own gross-profit and margin targets; those figures apply to Diodes’ business and should not be generalized to the semiconductor industry. Compare a company with its own history and stated model before comparing it with a peer.

4. Read inventory with sales and demand

Inventory is a cycle indicator, but a rising balance does not prove that a semiconductor stock is in trouble. Start with the balance and its trend, then investigate what the inventory represents.

Make the basic comparisons

  1. Record inventory at each quarter-end and year-end.
  2. Compare the percentage change in inventory with the percentage change in revenue over the same period.
  3. Calculate inventory as a percentage of the relevant sales base, using consistent consolidated or segment figures.
  4. Where cost-of-revenue data is available, calculate days inventory using average inventory divided by cost of revenue, multiplied by the number of days in the period. Treat the result as a trend measure, not a universal pass-fail cutoff.
  5. Read the notes and management discussion for excess, slow-moving, obsolete, or otherwise reserved inventory.

Ask what the balance contains

Inventory can include raw materials, work in process, and finished goods. A company with long manufacturing stages may carry more work in process than an outsourced or fabless peer. Stock may also be positioned to meet customer qualification requirements, protect against supply interruptions, or support a planned product launch.

Use the company’s accounting explanation

Check how management values inventory and reviews obsolescence. Diodes explains its company-specific inventory valuation and obsolescence review in its filing. That policy and the resulting reserves matter when comparing balances because two companies can classify and reserve for risk differently.

Observed combination Questions to investigate
Revenue rising, inventory rising faster Is the company building stock for expected demand, or are finished goods accumulating because customers are delaying orders?
Revenue falling, inventory still rising Are purchases and production being reduced? Has management disclosed excess or obsolete items and possible write-downs?
Revenue falling, inventory falling Is this disciplined destocking after a supply build, or a cutback that could limit future shipments?
Inventory stable while revenue changes Does the company use a different manufacturing model, or are prices and mix changing without equivalent unit movement?

Texas Instruments describes the semiconductor cycle as “the ebb and flow of supply and demand and the building and depleting of inventories.” Inventory therefore needs a cycle explanation, not a mechanical threshold.

5. Place the numbers in the semiconductor cycle

Semiconductor upturns and downturns involve changing supply, demand, and inventory. During tight supply, customers may build precautionary stock and manufacturers may expand capacity. When supply catches up or demand weakens, customers can reduce orders while channel inventories are worked down. Capacity decisions require time and capital, so reported results can reflect decisions made many quarters earlier.

Distinguish company execution from cycle exposure

Compare a company’s end markets, product differentiation, manufacturing capacity, and customer exposure with its peers. A broad industry correction should affect companies differently depending on the products they sell and the markets they serve. Use filing language to separate observed conditions from management outlook.

Keep seasonality separate from the cycle

A normal first-quarter slowdown is not necessarily an industry downturn, and a strong seasonal quarter is not proof of a structural recovery. Compare the same fiscal quarter across years and examine the company’s own historical pattern before drawing a cycle conclusion.

Fiscal year Revenue Reported gross margin Change from prior reported year
2024 $25.111 billion 22% Base year in this three-year series
2025 $37.378 billion 40% Revenue up approximately 48.8%; margin up 18 percentage points
2026 $133.188 billion 81% Revenue up approximately 256.3%; margin up 41 percentage points

This series demonstrates why both level and direction matter. Revenue expanded dramatically and the reported margin rose with it, but the figures describe one company’s consolidated results in those fiscal years, not a semiconductor-sector benchmark. A proper comparison would read Micron’s explanations of prices, volumes, mix, costs, capacity, and inventory alongside the numbers, then compare companies with similar products and cycle exposure.

How to interpret conflicting signals

Revenue is strong but margin is falling

Investigate whether growth comes from lower-priced products, an unfavorable mix, pricing pressure, poor yields, higher material costs, underutilized factories, or inventory charges. High revenue growth can be economically weak if each dollar produces less gross profit.

Margin is rising but revenue is flat

Possible explanations include favorable mix, price increases, improved yields, better utilization, lower input costs, or the absence of an earlier write-down. Determine whether the improvement is operational and repeatable or simply a comparison with an unusually weak prior period.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Inventory is rising while management reports strong demand

Check the production stage, customer commitments, lead times, and whether finished goods or work in process is increasing. A deliberate supply build can be rational, but the balance should eventually convert into shipments and revenue.

Inventory is falling while revenue is falling

Read whether management calls the movement customer destocking, planned production discipline, or a response to obsolete stock. Falling inventory can reduce near-term risk while also signaling weaker demand; the filing’s explanation determines the balance.

Two companies show similar margins

Do not assume their economics are identical. One may own fabs and carry substantial fixed costs, while another outsources production. Product mix, licensing revenue, customer concentration, and geographic exposure can produce the same percentage through different business models.

Common comparison errors

  • Using one quarter as a verdict: Semiconductor revenue is seasonal and cyclical; use multiple annual and quarterly periods.
  • Ranking the highest gross margin: Margin levels reflect product mix and manufacturing structure as well as execution.
  • Treating inventory growth as automatic bad news: Determine whether the balance is raw material, work in process, or finished goods and compare it with sales.
  • Mixing reported results with guidance: Label forecasts and targets separately from historical figures.
  • Ignoring write-downs: Inventory reserves can depress gross margin and may explain an abrupt change.
  • Comparing unlike peers: A memory company, analog supplier, and fabless designer may not share the same cycle or cost base.
  • Applying one industry cutoff: The available company filings do not establish a universal “good” growth rate, gross margin, or inventory-days limit.
  • Confusing a cycle with management skill: Separate industry supply-demand movements from product, cost, and capacity decisions the company controls.

Turn the worksheet into a disciplined conclusion

  1. State the peer boundary. Explain why the selected companies have sufficiently similar products, markets, and manufacturing arrangements.
  2. Describe the revenue trend. Include annual and quarterly direction and the disclosed causes of change.
  3. Explain margin movement. Identify mix, pricing, yields, costs, utilization, and inventory charges rather than citing the percentage alone.
  4. Assess inventory risk. Compare inventory with sales, identify the production stage, and quote the company’s excess or obsolescence disclosures in your notes.
  5. Place results in the cycle. Distinguish seasonal patterns, customer destocking, supply tightness, and management outlook.
  6. List what remains unknown. If a filing does not disclose units, customer inventory, or a margin bridge, mark that limitation instead of filling it with an assumption.
  7. Keep valuation separate. Revenue, margin, and inventory describe operating conditions; they do not by themselves establish a fair stock price or a buy-or-sell decision.

How often to update the comparison

Refresh the worksheet when each company files a quarterly or annual report, and preserve prior versions so that changes can be traced. Use the latest filing for any named-company snapshot because reported results, accounting estimates, and outlook change over time. Recheck fiscal calendars and segment definitions before calculating growth, and record whether a figure is consolidated, segment-specific, reported, or forecast.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Read the financial statements, management discussion, inventory footnotes, and any disclosed market or customer commentary together. The most useful comparison is the one that can explain not only which company’s number is higher, but why it is higher and whether the reason is likely to persist.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
