The reliable way to compare semiconductor stocks is to compare like with like. First identify where each company sits in the chip value chain and how it manufactures. Then test the source and durability of growth, measure margins and cash generation through a cycle, and only afterward compare valuation using a peer group with similar economics. A foundry-dependent designer, an integrated chip manufacturer, and a wafer-fabrication equipment supplier can all be called semiconductor companies, but their revenue drivers, capital needs, risks, and appropriate multiples are different.

Start by defining what you are comparing

A stock comparison is meaningful only after you define the business model, product economics, end markets, and measurement period. Decide whether you are comparing companies that sell similar products to similar customers or deliberately comparing different value-chain roles. The second approach can be useful for portfolio construction, but it is not a fair basis for declaring one stock cheaper, safer, or higher quality than another.

Use the latest annual report and quarterly filing for every company. Record the reporting period, accounting currency, share class, fiscal-year end, and whether figures are consolidated or segment-specific. Labels such as “fabless” or “integrated device manufacturer” are shorthand, not substitutes for reading the filing: a company may own some production, outsource other steps, or report segments that cross categories.

Classify the business model and manufacturing footprint

Business model How revenue is earned Main economic exposures Questions to ask
Integrated manufacturer Designs products and owns substantial wafer, assembly, or test capacity. Product demand, factory utilization, process technology, capacity timing, and large capital programs. How much production is internal? What utilization is needed for target margins? Is new capacity justified by committed demand or a forecast?
Fabless designer Designs and sells chips while relying on outside foundries and manufacturing contractors. Design wins, product differentiation, foundry allocation, wafer pricing, packaging availability, and supplier concentration. Which foundries and assembly partners are critical? Can the company secure capacity in a shortage? How much capital is avoided, and what dependence is added?
Component supplier Sells standard, specialized, or mixed semiconductor products, sometimes with a hybrid owned-and-outsourced footprint. Catalog breadth, pricing, distributor inventory, replacement cycles, and exposure to industrial, automotive, consumer, or communications demand. Is growth coming from share gains, new products, pricing, acquisitions, or inventory normalization?
Equipment, test, or materials supplier Sells tools, services, test systems, chemicals, wafers, or other inputs to chip manufacturers. Customer capital expenditure, factory construction, utilization, order timing, cancellations, and concentrated purchasing. How visible are orders and service revenue? Which customers or process nodes drive demand? How quickly could a customer defer a purchase?

Texas Instruments is an example of an integrated semiconductor business. Its filings describe designing and manufacturing semiconductors and emphasize analog and embedded processing as a source of long-term cash generation. Rambus describes a fabless model that uses third parties for fabrication, assembly, and test. Diodes Incorporated describes standard semiconductor products and a hybrid manufacturing model. These examples illustrate the categories; they are not a complete list of listed companies or a claim that every company fits one category perfectly.

Manufacturing ownership is a trade-off rather than a quality score. Internal production can provide control over process technology, capacity, supply, and product qualification, but it requires investment and exposes results to utilization and factory execution. Outsourcing can reduce direct capital requirements and preserve flexibility, while increasing dependence on foundry allocation, supplier pricing, packaging, and external execution.

Map products, customers, and end markets

After classifying the operating model, break revenue into products and end markets. A company with 50% automotive sales has a different demand pattern from one selling mainly to smartphones, even if both report the same quarterly growth rate. Automotive qualification cycles can be long and design wins can last for years, while consumer programs may turn faster and be more promotion- or inventory-sensitive. Industrial demand can be project-driven, and data-center demand can be tied to infrastructure investment and rapidly changing architectures.

onsemi’s 2025 filing reports the following company-specific revenue mix:

onsemi 2025 end-market category Share of 2025 revenue Scope and qualification
Automotive 51% Share reported by onsemi for its 2025 revenue.
Industrial 28% Share reported by onsemi for its 2025 revenue.
Other 21% Includes AI data center, computing, consumer, networking, communications, and other markets in the company’s definition.

Do not turn those percentages into sector-wide assumptions. They describe onsemi’s mix for 2025. The same filing identifies development priorities in power management for AI data centers, vehicle electrification, energy systems, and sensing. Those priorities explain where management is directing effort; they are not independent confirmation that the markets will meet a forecast.

For each candidate, record the largest customers or customer groups, direct versus distributor sales, geographic exposure, and the proportion of revenue tied to a small number of programs. A high share of one end market is not automatically bad: it can reflect a durable specialization, but it increases the importance of that market’s cycle and the company’s competitive position within it.

Separate reported growth from durable growth

Headline revenue growth is a starting observation, not an explanation. Build a bridge showing how much change came from unit volume, pricing, mix, acquisitions, divestitures, currency, and a recovery from an unusually weak comparison period. A small company can post a high percentage increase from a low base, while a large company may grow more slowly despite adding more absolute revenue.

Questions that expose the source of growth

  • Is growth organic, or did an acquisition add most of the increase?
  • Did pricing rise because of sustainable value or temporary shortages?
  • Is the comparison against a supply-constrained peak, an inventory correction, or a depressed trough?
  • Are new design wins converting into production revenue, or are they still engineering announcements?
  • Are distributors and customers carrying more inventory than they can sell?
  • Did currency translation, a fiscal-calendar change, or a very small prior-year base distort the percentage?
  • Does management disclose backlog, bookings, cancellations, or customer commitments, and how reliable have those measures been?

Use segment disclosures and management discussion to connect growth to actual products and customers. Management descriptions of high-growth applications communicate strategy and expectations; they do not independently validate the forecast. Look for corroboration in orders, production revenue, customer concentration, gross-margin movement, and cash collection.

Market growth statistics also require scope checks. STMicroelectronics reported WSTS figures in a 2025 company filing showing semiconductor industry revenue up approximately 26% year over year to approximately $792 billion for the total addressable market, and approximately 15% to approximately $279 billion for the serviceable addressable market. These are differently scoped market measures attributed to WSTS; they are not a particular company’s growth rate and are not a forward forecast. Preserve the attribution and definitions when using them.

Measure financial quality through a cycle

Collect at least several years of revenue, gross margin, operating margin, research and development, capital expenditure, depreciation, working capital, operating cash flow, debt, cash, and free cash flow. For cyclical companies, include a strong period, a downturn, and the latest period rather than relying on one unusually favorable year.

Metric What it helps answer Common distortion to check
Revenue growth How quickly the business is expanding. Acquisitions, currency, pricing, inventory recovery, or a small comparison base.
Gross margin How much product economics remain after manufacturing costs. Utilization, product mix, wafer and packaging costs, and temporary pricing.
Operating margin How efficiently gross profit funds R&D, sales, and administration. Restructuring, stock compensation, acquisition costs, or unusually low R&D.
R&D spending Whether the company is funding future process, architecture, and product improvements. Cutting R&D can lift near-term profit while weakening the product pipeline.
Capital expenditure How much cash is required for fabs, tooling, laboratories, and capacity. A capacity build can depress current free cash flow before revenue arrives; underinvestment can make future supply unreliable.
Working capital How much cash is tied up in inventory and receivables as sales change. Inventory builds can temporarily reduce cash, while inventory liquidation can temporarily boost it.
Operating cash flow Whether reported earnings convert into cash from operations. Receivables, payables, inventory movements, and tax timing.
Free cash flow Cash left after operating needs and capital expenditure. It can be unusually low during a factory program or unusually high after working-capital release.
Debt and cash How resilient the balance sheet is during a downturn. Net cash can hide lease, pension, customer-financing, or other obligations if you look only at headline debt.

Texas Instruments reported 2025 revenue of $17.68 billion, cash flow from operations of $7.15 billion, free cash flow of $2.94 billion, and capital expenditures of $4.55 billion. These are reported company results for 2025. The high capital-spending level matters when interpreting contemporaneous free cash flow: a lower current cash yield may reflect deliberate capacity investment rather than a permanent deterioration, but the investment still has to earn an acceptable return.

The company says its preferred long-term progress measure is free-cash-flow-per-share growth. Its 2025 Form 10-K states: “Technology is the foundation of our company, but ultimately, our objective and the best metric for owners to measure our progress is through the growth of free cash flow per share over the long term.” Treat that as the company’s stated objective, then test it against multiple years of cash flow, share count, investment, and returns rather than accepting the objective as proof.

Normalize cash generation

For a cyclical manufacturer, calculate free cash flow in several ways: reported trailing free cash flow, a multi-year average, and a scenario that assumes normal utilization and maintenance capital expenditure. Identify which capital spending is maintenance, which is expansion, and when each project is expected to contribute. Do not replace disclosed figures with a single “normalized” number without documenting the assumptions.

Compare manufacturing ownership and reinvestment needs

Capital intensity changes both risk and valuation. Texas Instruments reported approximately $24 billion of capital expenditure over 2016–2025. That is a company-specific figure over a stated period, not a universal requirement for analog manufacturers. Rambus describes outsourcing manufacturing to reduce capital requirements and retain flexibility. The comparison is therefore not “high capex versus low capex equals better versus worse”; it is control and potential operating leverage versus flexibility and supplier dependence.

For companies that own factories

  • Track planned capacity by site, process, and timing.
  • Compare utilization with gross margin and operating margin during both strong and weak demand.
  • Assess whether construction commitments can be reduced if demand changes.
  • Estimate the return required from new capacity and the time before it reaches meaningful utilization.
  • Review depreciation, equipment lead times, subsidies, joint ventures, and customer qualification requirements.

For fabless companies

  • Identify primary and backup foundries, assembly houses, and test providers.
  • Check wafer, packaging, and test commitments, including minimum-volume or take-or-pay obligations where disclosed.
  • Measure gross-margin sensitivity to foundry pricing, expedited capacity, and product mix.
  • Evaluate whether leading-edge access, advanced packaging, or specialized analog and power processes could constrain growth.

Use a separate lens for equipment, test, and materials suppliers

Suppliers to semiconductor manufacturers sell into customers’ investment budgets, so their revenue does not move in lockstep with chip vendors’ revenue. A chipmaker may report stable product sales while delaying a fab project, or an equipment supplier may benefit from a construction wave before the resulting chips generate revenue. Conversely, customer cancellations can hit equipment orders quickly even when installed fabs remain busy.

Examine order timing, backlog and cancellations when disclosed, service and consumables revenue, customer concentration, geographic exposure, and customers’ fab-investment plans. Separate repeat service revenue from tool shipments, and distinguish bookings from recognized revenue. Industry purchasing can be concentrated, and available filing evidence documents equipment-market cyclicality, but comparable current order or backlog figures are not established for every supplier. Do not fill that gap with an assumption.

Compare valuation only within a suitable peer group

Valuation ratios are prompts for explanation, not a league table. Before calculating a multiple, write down the date, currency, share class, equity value, debt, cash, earnings period, and data source. Label earnings as trailing, forward, or normalized. Refresh share prices, enterprise values, consensus assumptions, and company filings close to publication; no current share prices or trading multiples are established here.

Measure Useful for Why it can mislead semiconductor investors
Price-to-earnings Comparing equity value with accounting earnings among companies with similar capital structures. Earnings can be temporarily inflated at a cyclical peak or depressed at a trough; one-time charges and differing tax rates also matter.
Enterprise value to EBITDA Comparing businesses with different debt and cash positions. EBITDA does not include the capital expenditure required to build or maintain fabs, tools, and capacity.
Price-to-sales Early-stage or low-profit companies where earnings are not yet meaningful. It ignores margin, product mix, reinvestment, working capital, and balance-sheet risk.
Free-cash-flow yield Assessing cash returned relative to equity value when cash flow is reasonably normalized. Factory investment, inventory swings, customer prepayments, and cycle timing can make the latest cash flow unrepresentative.

Build the peer set before looking for a verdict

Match companies on product economics, end-market mix, growth durability, gross and operating margins, R&D intensity, capital intensity, customer concentration, supplier dependence, and balance-sheet risk. A fabless processor designer should not automatically be valued against an analog manufacturer with owned fabs; an equipment supplier should not be ranked against either solely on price-to-earnings.

For every premium or discount, state the operating explanation. A premium may reflect durable design wins, higher returns on invested capital, recurring service revenue, stronger balance-sheet resilience, or a longer growth runway. A discount may reflect peak earnings, customer concentration, foundry dependence, heavy expansion spending, or an end market in correction. If you cannot connect the multiple to a measurable difference, the comparison is incomplete.

Analyze the semiconductor cycle and company-specific risks

Demand and inventory swings

Semiconductor demand can change faster than production plans. Customers and distributors may order ahead of need, then reduce purchases while working through inventory. Compare sell-in revenue with end demand where disclosed, days of inventory, channel commentary, utilization, lead times, and order cancellations. A recovery from destocking can produce strong year-over-year growth without proving a new structural growth rate.

Technology and product replacement

Rapid product change can create opportunity and obsolescence simultaneously. Review process-node transitions, qualification periods, software or ecosystem requirements, patent dependence, and the expected replacement cycle. A design win is valuable only if it reaches production at acceptable volume and margin.

Customer concentration

Read concentration disclosures and identify whether a major customer is a direct buyer, distributor, foundry partner, or strategic program. Concentration can support scale and visibility, but losing one program can affect utilization, pricing, and working capital at the same time.

Supply, geopolitical, and trade exposure

Map dependence on particular foundries, substrates, packaging providers, equipment makers, minerals, and shipping routes. Review export controls, tariffs, licensing requirements, regional incentives, and the location of critical facilities. A company’s risk disclosure identifies scenarios management considers material; it does not predict whether or when those scenarios will occur.

Balance-sheet resilience

Stress the company under lower utilization, slower collections, excess inventory, delayed capacity, and weaker pricing. Check maturity dates, variable-rate debt, leases, pension obligations, minimum purchase commitments, and the cash needed to complete announced projects. Strong gross margins do not eliminate liquidity risk if fixed investment and commitments are large.

A repeatable step-by-step comparison process

  1. Define the universe. List the companies, fiscal periods, share classes, currencies, and value-chain roles you will compare.
  2. Read the latest filings. Verify manufacturing ownership, outsourcing, segment definitions, end markets, customer concentration, risk factors, and accounting changes.
  3. Build a business-model card. Record products, manufacturing footprint, foundry and supplier dependence, principal customers, geographic exposure, and recurring versus shipment-based revenue.
  4. Construct a growth bridge. Separate organic volume, price, mix, acquisitions, currency, and cyclical recovery. Reconcile segment growth to consolidated growth.
  5. Calculate operating quality. Compare several years of gross margin, operating margin, R&D, capital expenditure, working capital, operating cash flow, free cash flow, debt, and cash.
  6. Normalize the cycle. Include peak, trough, and current conditions. Identify whether utilization, inventory, or unusually low investment is distorting the latest result.
  7. Evaluate reinvestment returns. For owned capacity, assess utilization and project returns. For fabless firms, assess foundry access, packaging commitments, and supplier pricing. For equipment suppliers, assess orders, service revenue, and customer investment plans.
  8. Choose genuinely comparable peers. Match product economics, end markets, margins, capital intensity, concentration, and balance-sheet risk before selecting a multiple.
  9. Refresh market data. On the same date, collect share price, diluted shares, debt, cash, enterprise value, trailing or forward earnings, and free cash flow. State the source and currency for every input.
  10. Write the investment case and failure case. Explain which operating assumptions justify the valuation and what evidence would invalidate them. Include a downside involving the cycle, a customer, a supplier, or a capital project.

Common comparison mistakes

  • Ranking all chip stocks by one growth rate. This ignores base effects, acquisitions, product mix, and cycle timing.
  • Comparing a fabless company with an integrated manufacturer on free-cash-flow margin alone. Their direct capital requirements and supplier risks differ.
  • Using EBITDA as if fabs were free. Depreciation may approximate real economic consumption of manufacturing assets; examine capital expenditure separately.
  • Calling a stock cheap on a peak-year P/E. Test earnings at normal utilization and pricing.
  • Calling a stock expensive on trough earnings. Determine whether the downturn is temporary, structural, or caused by a product failure.
  • Treating management’s target market as realized revenue. Track design-win conversion, production volume, margin, and customer adoption.
  • Ignoring working capital. Inventory liquidation can inflate cash flow during a downturn, while prudent inventory investment can suppress it before demand arrives.
  • Mixing dates and definitions. A trailing multiple from one date and a forward estimate from another can create a false comparison.
  • Assuming diversification without reading the definition. “Other” or “industrial” categories can contain very different products and demand drivers.

How to turn the comparison into a decision

Use a scorecard only after the evidence is normalized. Give each company a written assessment for business-model clarity, growth quality, margin durability, reinvestment returns, through-cycle cash generation, customer and supplier concentration, balance-sheet resilience, and valuation assumptions. A numerical score can organize judgment, but it should not hide uncertainty or compensate for incomparable peers.

The strongest candidate is not necessarily the fastest grower or the lowest multiple. It is the company whose product economics, end-market demand, manufacturing or supplier model, cash reinvestment, and balance sheet support the assumptions embedded in its valuation. The final test is consistency: can the same explanation account for revenue, margins, capital expenditure, cash flow, and the risks disclosed in the filing?

Refresh the analysis whenever a company files new results, changes its capacity plan, loses or gains a major customer, faces a material supply or trade restriction, or experiences a meaningful shift in the semiconductor cycle. A comparison is a dated analytical model, not a permanent ranking.
