Compare semiconductor companies in two stages: first classify how each one makes money, then normalize its financial and market data. A fabless chip designer, an integrated device manufacturer (IDM), a foundry, a memory producer, an outsourced assembly and test provider, and a chip-equipment maker can report very different revenue, margins, capital needs, and customer risks. Ranking them on one unqualified margin or valuation multiple produces misleading conclusions.

The practical method is to align fiscal periods and currencies; separate revenue scale from growth quality; interpret gross and operating margins alongside utilization, yields, product mix, research spending, and capital intensity; measure customer and end-market concentration from comparable disclosures; and calculate valuation on one stated date using metrics suited to each business model.

Start by identifying what kind of semiconductor company you are comparing

“Semiconductor company” covers several businesses with different economics. Before opening a spreadsheet, write down the company’s primary role and any material secondary roles. Segment reporting is more reliable than a broad corporate label because some companies combine design, manufacturing, packaging, and equipment activities.

Fabless chip designers

Fabless companies design and sell integrated circuits but contract wafer fabrication to foundries and usually outsource packaging and testing as well. Their assets are concentrated in intellectual property, engineering talent, software, product qualification, and sales channels rather than owned wafer plants. Revenue can scale quickly when a design wins a high-volume platform, while supply availability, foundry pricing, and a few large customers can become constraints.

Integrated device manufacturers (IDMs)

An IDM designs products and operates at least some of its own wafer-fabrication capacity. It may also use outside foundries for selected products or process nodes. Owned factories add depreciation, maintenance, labor, utilities, and inventory exposure, but can provide process control, supply assurance, and differentiated manufacturing know-how. Compare an IDM’s manufacturing utilization and product mix before interpreting a margin change.

Foundries

A foundry sells manufacturing capacity and process technology to customers that generally own the chip designs. Its economics depend on wafer pricing, utilization, yields, technology transitions, capacity additions, and the mix of advanced and mature processes. A foundry can serve hundreds of customers while still carrying enormous fixed costs, so a small utilization change can affect operating profit disproportionately.

Memory producers

Memory makers sell standardized or semi-standardized products such as dynamic random-access memory and NAND. Prices are strongly cyclical: industry supply, inventory, and customer demand can move revenue and margins faster than a company’s design-win pipeline. Compare a memory producer’s bit shipments, average selling prices, inventory, and capital spending rather than treating one year of earnings as a normal run rate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Outsourced semiconductor assembly and test (OSAT) providers

OSAT companies package and test chips after wafer fabrication. Revenue is tied to package type, test complexity, units processed, customer volumes, and capacity utilization. Advanced packaging can carry different economics from mature assembly, so segment mix matters even when total units are similar.

Semiconductor-equipment companies

Equipment makers sell the systems, service, and consumables used to manufacture chips. Their customers are manufacturers, not end consumers, and orders can be lumpy because a single fab project may span several years. Evaluate backlog, service revenue, installed base, geographic controls, and customer concentration in addition to reported sales and margins.

Hybrid models need a segment-level view

A company can combine several roles. Microchip Technology’s fiscal 2026 filing illustrates why a binary label can fail: 65% of net sales came from products manufactured at outside wafer foundries, compared with 64% in fiscal 2025. That disclosure shows meaningful external-foundry exposure, but it is not a universal rule for classifying every mixed manufacturer. Record the actual manufacturing split and product segments disclosed by each company.

Align fiscal periods

Record each fiscal year-end date and compare periods that cover similar economic conditions. A company with a September year-end may report a different demand cycle from one with a December year-end. Label every figure as a fiscal year, quarter, or trailing period; do not silently mix calendar-year revenue with fiscal-year margins.

Use one currency and state the conversion

Choose a reporting currency, usually U.S. dollars for a multinational peer set, and document whether you use the company’s translated figures, period-average exchange rates, or period-end rates. Reported growth in U.S. dollars can differ from growth in local currency. Keep a separate column for organic or constant-currency growth when management discloses it.

Separate GAAP, IFRS, and adjusted measures

Gross margin and operating margin should normally be compared on the same accounting basis. If one company removes stock compensation, acquisition costs, or restructuring from an adjusted operating margin, show the reported measure beside it rather than blending the two. Note changes in accounting, segment definitions, or discontinued operations that break a time series.

Capture the observation date

Valuation is a point-in-time measurement. Put the market-data date, share count convention, net debt date, and earnings period beside every multiple. A price-to-earnings ratio from one date cannot be compared with an enterprise-value-to-EBITDA ratio calculated from another date without an explicit adjustment.

Compare revenue scale, growth, and the reasons behind it

Revenue answers “how large?” but not “how durable?” Start with reported sales, then explain what produced the change.

Use a revenue bridge

  1. Scale: record total revenue for the same length of period and currency.
  2. Growth: calculate year-over-year and, where possible, a three- to five-year compound annual growth rate.
  3. Mix: split sales by product, process, package, geography, and end market using the company’s own segments.
  4. Drivers: identify unit volume, average selling price, capacity, utilization, acquisitions, and foreign-exchange effects.
  5. Quality: distinguish recurring service or software-like revenue from one-time project, licensing, or inventory-rebuild revenue.

Growth has different meaning by model. A foundry growing because advanced-node capacity is sold out faces a different constraint from a fabless designer growing after a new platform win. A memory producer can show a sharp rebound when prices recover even if long-term unit demand is unchanged. An equipment supplier can report a surge from a few large fab starts that later normalizes.

Current foundry illustration: TSMC

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company reported 2025 consolidated revenue of US$122.42 billion, up 35.9% year over year in U.S.-dollar terms, in its 2026 annual report covering 2025. The same report says it served 534 customers and manufactured 12,682 products using 305 technologies during 2025. Those figures indicate broad customer and product activity, but they do not by themselves prove that every customer or technology contributed equally to revenue.

Metric TSMC reported figure How to use it in a comparison
Period Fiscal year 2025, reported in the 2026 annual report Match other companies’ fiscal coverage before ranking.
Consolidated revenue US$122.42 billion Use as scale; pair with segment and end-market mix.
Year-over-year growth 35.9% in U.S.-dollar terms Check currency basis and whether peers report local-currency growth.
Customers 534 Useful breadth indicator; not a revenue-concentration percentage.
Products and technologies 12,682 products using 305 technologies Shows manufacturing and product breadth, not profitability by technology.

Do not treat revenue concentration as a growth forecast

Revenue concentration can amplify both upside and downside. A large customer’s product launch may accelerate sales, while a delayed platform or inventory correction can reverse them. Look for backlog, purchase commitments, channel inventories, and end-market demand rather than extending one growth rate indefinitely.

Interpret gross and operating margins with the cost structure visible

Gross margin is revenue minus cost of goods sold divided by revenue. Operating margin subtracts operating expenses such as research and development, selling and administration from operating income. Both are useful, but neither is a standalone measure of business quality.

What can move gross margin

  • Product mix: advanced products, mature products, services, and consumables carry different prices and costs.
  • Utilization: a fab running below practical capacity spreads fixed costs over fewer wafers.
  • Yield: more good dies per wafer lower the cost per saleable unit.
  • Manufacturing costs: materials, energy, labor, depreciation, and outsourced wafer or packaging prices can change.
  • Inventory reserves: write-downs for obsolete or excess inventory raise reported cost of sales.
  • Launch and ramp costs: a new process or product may incur expense before volume economics improve.

What can move operating margin

Operating margin adds the company’s R&D and commercial spending to the analysis. A fabless designer may report a high gross margin but reinvest heavily in engineering. An equipment maker may have strong service margins but incur large sales and support costs to maintain a global installed base. Compare R&D as a percentage of revenue, stock-based compensation, restructuring, and acquisition amortization before attributing a margin gap to pricing power.

TSMC’s 2025 margins

TSMC reported a 59.9% gross margin and a 50.8% operating margin for 2025 in the 2026 annual report covering that year. These are company-specific results for a foundry with its own mix, utilization, technology portfolio, and accounting period. They are not a target margin for fabless, memory, IDM, OSAT, or equipment peers.

Historical cross-model context from BIS

A 2023 U.S. Bureau of Industry and Security report found that fabless companies had a 32% group net margin versus 20% for IDMs in 2022. The report also found that an average 44% of fabless companies reported a net loss in a year during 2017–2022, compared with 17% of IDMs. These are historical, cross-company findings, not current forecasts or a ranking of any particular issuer. They illustrate why averages can hide a wide distribution of outcomes: a profitable, asset-light leader and a loss-making start-up can both be counted as fabless.

Normalize before drawing a margin conclusion

  1. Use the same period and accounting basis.
  2. Show gross margin, operating margin, and net margin separately.
  3. Read the inventory, utilization, and depreciation disclosures.
  4. Mark one-time charges and benefits.
  5. Compare margins only within similar business models before making a cross-model observation.

Measure capital intensity and manufacturing exposure

Capital expenditure is a strategic variable, not just a cash-flow line. The BIS report estimated semiconductor-industry capital expenditures at $182 billion in 2022 and described the industry as highly capital intensive, with material differences among segments and companies.

Track the right capital measures

  • Capital expenditures: cash spent on property, plant, and equipment during the period.
  • Depreciation: the accounting cost of previously installed equipment; compare it with capex to understand whether the asset base is expanding.
  • Capex intensity: capex divided by revenue, preferably over several years.
  • Free cash flow: operating cash flow minus capex; inspect working-capital swings before calling it recurring.
  • Committed capacity: announced fabs, long-lead equipment, and construction obligations that may not yet appear in current depreciation.

Foundries and IDMs generally require more physical investment than fabless designers. Memory producers can have especially volatile capex as they respond to pricing cycles. Equipment companies invest in factories and R&D but do not fund the customer’s entire fab. A lower capex-to-revenue ratio can mean an asset-light model, or simply an underinvestment period; interpret it with capacity and competitive context.

Examine customers, concentration, and end markets

Customer count is not the same as customer diversification. A company can serve many accounts while one customer contributes a large share of sales, or it can have a few customers with similar economic exposure spread across end markets.

Build a concentration table

For each filing period, record named customers, each customer’s percentage of revenue when disclosed, the disclosure threshold, and whether the figure covers consolidated sales or a segment. Do not treat an undisclosed percentage as zero concentration. Different companies may use different thresholds and periods, making direct percentages imperfectly comparable.

Equipment-company example: KLA

KLA reported that Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company exceeded 10% of KLA revenue in each fiscal year ended June 30, 2024, 2025, and 2026, according to KLA’s 2026 Form 10-K. This is a clear example of disclosed customer concentration. It does not mean TSMC was KLA’s only important customer, nor does it establish the exact percentage above the 10% threshold.

Foundry breadth example: TSMC

TSMC’s report of 534 customers in 2025 provides a breadth measure. Pair that count with geographic, end-market, and customer-revenue disclosures if available. A large count can coexist with substantial dependence on a small number of high-volume accounts.

End-market exposure

Map revenue to data center, communications, automotive, industrial, consumer, mobile, and other disclosed markets. End markets have different replacement cycles, qualification requirements, and sensitivity to economic conditions. Also record where products are manufactured and sold, because geopolitical restrictions, export controls, and regional incentives can affect demand and supply.

Choose valuation metrics that fit the business model

Valuation is meaningful only with a date, a consistent denominator, and a peer group whose economics are comparable. No current, fully comparable peer-multiple dataset is established here, so do not insert live multiples without recalculating them from same-date prices and filings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Market capitalization and enterprise value

Market capitalization equals the share price multiplied by the diluted or basic share count you specify. Enterprise value generally starts with market capitalization, adds debt and other claims, and subtracts cash and cash equivalents. State whether you include leases, preferred stock, non-controlling interests, or restricted cash. Use market capitalization for equity-value comparisons and enterprise value when comparing operating assets financed with different debt levels.

Price-to-earnings (P/E)

P/E is share price divided by earnings per share, or market capitalization divided by net income. It becomes difficult to interpret when earnings are negative, temporarily depressed by a memory downturn, or inflated by a cyclical peak. Use normalized or forward earnings only when the normalization method and forecast date are explicit.

Enterprise-value-to-EBITDA (EV/EBITDA)

EV/EBITDA reduces differences caused by capital structure and some non-cash charges, but EBITDA excludes depreciation. That omission matters for fabs and other businesses that must continually replace expensive equipment. Compare EV/EBITDA within groups with similar reinvestment requirements and use maintenance-capex information to test the result.

Price-to-sales (P/S)

P/S can be used when earnings are negative, but it ignores gross margin, operating expense, capital intensity, and the cash needed to convert sales into profit. A high-margin fabless designer and a low-margin manufacturing business should not receive the same sales multiple simply because revenue is comparable.

Valuation workflow

  1. Choose a single market-data date and record the closing price or other stated price convention.
  2. Use the same share-count definition for every company.
  3. Calculate market capitalization and enterprise value from filings for a common balance-sheet date.
  4. Select P/E, EV/EBITDA, P/S, or another metric that matches the model and earnings condition.
  5. Use trailing, forward, or normalized earnings consistently and label the choice.
  6. Compare only with peers exposed to similar cycles, capital needs, and accounting definitions.
  7. Run a sensitivity table for revenue, margin, and multiple assumptions instead of presenting one precise target.

Common comparison mistakes and how to correct them

Ranking all companies by revenue

Problem: scale is mistaken for superior economics. Correction: separate revenue by business model, then analyze growth, margin, and capital intensity within each group.

Using gross margin as a proxy for pricing power

Problem: utilization, yields, depreciation, and product mix are ignored. Correction: read manufacturing and inventory disclosures and compare operating margin and cash flow as well.

Mixing fiscal years

Problem: one company’s peak quarter is compared with another’s trough. Correction: align coverage dates or explain the economic-period difference directly in the table.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Treating customer counts as diversification

Problem: a long customer list hides a dominant account. Correction: capture disclosed revenue percentages and thresholds; mark missing disclosure as unknown.

Comparing stale or mismatched multiples

Problem: prices and earnings dates differ, or one company uses adjusted EBITDA. Correction: recalculate all multiples on one date with consistent definitions.

Assuming historical industry averages are forecasts

Problem: a 2017–2022 profitability study is treated as a current expectation. Correction: label the historical window and use company-specific current filings for present conditions.

How to reach a defensible conclusion

After completing the worksheet, write the conclusion as a set of conditional judgments rather than a single leaderboard. For example: a foundry may have strong margins because of technology mix and utilization but require heavy ongoing capex; a fabless designer may convert sales to cash with less physical investment but face customer and outsourced-supply concentration; an equipment maker may benefit from a large installed base while remaining exposed to customers’ timing of fab projects.

Use a dated scorecard with separate ratings for revenue momentum, margin quality, customer breadth, end-market balance, balance-sheet and capex burden, and valuation. Explain which evidence supports each rating and which disclosures are missing. The result is more useful than declaring one semiconductor company “best” across incompatible models.
