Compare rubber manufacturers by aligning their business models, reporting periods and accounting definitions before ranking their margins, capacity or debt. A natural-rubber processor, a glove producer and a tire maker face different cost structures; their headline percentages and tonnage are not directly comparable without that context. Use margins to understand profitability, capacity and utilization to examine operating scale, and debt alongside cash generation to assess financial resilience—not as three interchangeable scores.
Why a fair comparison starts with the business model
“Rubber manufacturer” covers companies at different points in the value chain. A natural-rubber processor buys or collects raw rubber and sells processed grades; a glove producer converts latex into finished medical or industrial products; a tire maker combines rubber with other materials and sells a more complex engineered product. The companies may be exposed to some common input-price movements, but their products, customers, selling prices, operating costs and capital needs differ.
That matters because a higher gross margin does not automatically mean a better business, and greater installed capacity does not automatically mean greater output or stronger cash generation. Before comparing figures, decide whether you are comparing like with like. If the businesses differ, use the comparison to understand their respective economics rather than presenting a single winner based on one metric.

Build a focused peer set
Group companies by their main activity where possible: natural-rubber processors with processors, latex and glove producers with similar producers, and tire makers with tire makers. If a company spans more than one activity, find out whether the figures are consolidated or segment-level. Consolidated results combine all included businesses; segment results can better isolate a particular operation, but may not include the same costs or allocations as another company’s segment.

Use the same fiscal period and identify each year-end. A company’s FY2025 may not cover the same calendar months as another company’s FY2025. Record the reporting currency and units as well. Do not compare Thai-baht revenue or debt directly with a dollar-denominated figure as though the amounts were equivalent. Currency conversion can help put figures on a common scale, but it does not remove differences in reporting period, business scope, accounting treatment or purchasing power.
Track changes in business scope
Acquisitions, divestitures, plant closures and other footprint changes can make year-over-year trends misleading. Goodyear’s FY2025 Form 10-K describes portfolio divestitures and operating-footprint measures. A comparison that treats its earlier and later results as the same business without considering those actions may mistake a change in scope for an underlying change in performance. Check the relevant filing’s discussion of discontinued or divested operations and other changes before interpreting a trend.
How to compare gross, operating and EBITDA margins
Margins put earnings in relation to revenue, but each margin measures a different layer of the business. For a consistent period, calculate or record each measure using the company’s disclosed definition and label it clearly. If a company does not disclose a measure, do not silently substitute a different one.

| Measure | What it helps show | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Gross margin | How much revenue remains after the costs included in cost of sales. | Which costs the company includes in cost of sales and whether the calculation is reported or adjusted. |
| Operating margin | Operating profit relative to revenue, after operating expenses included in the company’s definition. | How operating profit is defined and whether restructuring, impairment or other items are included or excluded. |
| EBITDA margin | EBITDA relative to revenue; useful as an operating-performance measure before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization. | The company’s EBITDA definition, any adjustments and the items excluded. EBITDA is not cash flow and does not account for capital expenditure or debt payments. |
A basic calculation is margin = the chosen profit measure ÷ revenue × 100. Use the same period and revenue basis for numerator and denominator. If you use an issuer’s reported percentage, retain its label and definition rather than implying that you independently calculated a standardized measure.
Keep reported and adjusted figures separate
Reported results include the items recognized under the company’s reporting basis. An adjusted measure excludes selected items according to the issuer’s stated definition. To compare adjusted margins, confirm that both companies exclude comparable items; even then, disclose the exclusions rather than treating the result as a universally standardized figure. Do not compare one company’s reported EBITDA margin with another company’s adjusted EBITDA margin as if they were the same measure.
Sri Trang Gloves (STGT), in its FY2025 management discussion available in 2026, reported a gross margin of 9.1%, compared with 8.7% in 2024. It also reported an EBITDA margin excluding one-time items of 14.3%, compared with 13.7% in 2024. The EBITDA figures carry the exclusion explicitly: they are not interchangeable with an unadjusted EBITDA margin. The same discussion identified THB 634.0 million in one-time Q4 2025 expenses, including flooding-related expenses and impairments. That context matters when interpreting reported SG&A and comparing reported with adjusted performance.

STGT said its 2025 gross margin improved as costs fell faster than sales. That explanation illustrates why a margin change needs a driver, not just a percentage comparison. Raw-material prices, selling prices, product and customer mix, currency, energy costs, utilization and one-off expenses can all affect results. The same factor can help one producer while hurting another, depending on how quickly it passes costs through to customers, its contracts or hedges, and what it sells.
Use company examples as context, not a league table
North East Rubber (NER) reported a FY2025 gross profit margin of 9.63% in its 2026 factsheet. The same factsheet gives FY2025 revenue of THB 30,510 million, sales volume of 475,430 tons, EBITDA of THB 2,728 million and net profit of THB 1,885 million. Those figures describe one company’s disclosed period and business; the gross-margin series should not be assumed to use an identical definition to another producer’s series.
NER’s investor-relations materials describe a product mix that includes RSS, STR, mixed rubber and rubber flooring. This business context helps explain why its margin should not be read as a direct benchmark for a glove company or tire maker. A percentage comparison is informative only after you have considered what each company sells and how its reported measure is defined.
How to interpret capacity, production and utilization
Capacity is a measure of potential output under a stated definition and time period. It is not the same thing as production, sales volume or the percentage of capacity actually used. A plant may be installed but not fully ramped up; output may also be affected by maintenance, demand, feedstock supply, labor, product mix or operational constraints. Establish which measure the company has disclosed before using it.
- Installed capacity: stated production capability. Check the products covered, units, facilities included and whether the figure is current or a future target.
- Production: output actually made during a period. It may differ from sales because of inventory changes, timing and other factors.
- Sales volume: quantity sold during the period. It is not automatically a proxy for production or installed capacity.
- Capacity utilization: a percentage indicating how much of a defined capacity base was used. Confirm the denominator and period; the percentage is meaningful only in relation to that definition.
Keep units and product types consistent. Tons of processed natural rubber are not equivalent to tons of gloves or tires in terms of product value, processing steps or economics. Do not add unlike products into a single capacity total or infer comparable sales from capacity alone.

The 2026 SET company snapshot for Sri Trang Agro-Industry (STA) describes intended installed natural-rubber capacity of 3.86 million tons by 2026. It also describes approximate planned investment of THB 9,000 million for TSR plant expansion and THB 950 million for LTX expansion. These are stated plans and targets, not evidence that the expansion was completed or that the capacity was operating at full utilization. Check for subsequent company disclosures before treating a target as achieved capacity.

The same caution applies to any announced expansion. Record whether the company has announced a target, started construction, commissioned a facility or reported operating capacity. Those are different milestones, and each changes what can reasonably be inferred about output, investment and future returns.
Read utilization alongside volume and margins
STGT reported 2025 capacity utilization of 77.7%, down from 82.8% in 2024, in its FY2025 management discussion available in 2026. Consider this alongside its period, product mix, sales and margin disclosures. A utilization rate by itself cannot tell you whether lower utilization was caused by weaker demand, a change in available capacity, maintenance or another factor; use management’s explanation and the underlying period data rather than assigning a cause without evidence.
For NER, the FY2025 sales-volume figure is a volume actually sold, not an installed-capacity figure. For STA, the cited capacity is a forward target. These measures answer different questions. A comparison table should label them as such rather than placing the numbers in one undifferentiated “capacity” column.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteHow to assess debt without overlooking cash needs
A debt balance alone cannot show whether a manufacturer can service its obligations. Pull the same period’s gross debt, cash and cash equivalents, net debt, interest expense, operating cash flow, capital expenditure and debt maturities from audited statements or equivalent official filings. Add disclosed currency exposure and fixed-versus-variable interest-rate information where available. The surfaced company examples do not establish a harmonized debt ranking across the businesses, so do not infer one from the margin and capacity figures alone.
Calculate net debt consistently
A common calculation is net debt = gross debt − cash and cash equivalents. State what you include in gross debt and cash, and use the same definition for every company. Some companies disclose their own net-debt measure, which may include or exclude items differently; preserve the company’s label if you use it, or recalculate consistently from disclosed components and explain the method.
Debt-to-EBITDA is commonly calculated as net debt ÷ EBITDA, but the result depends on which debt and EBITDA definitions you choose. Use the same period, currency and reported-or-adjusted basis across peers. A ratio based on adjusted EBITDA should be clearly marked, and a ratio based on period-end debt should not be presented as if it captures the full year’s borrowing or repayment pattern.

Connect borrowing to repayment capacity
Compare debt with the cash the business generates after it pays for operating needs and necessary investment. Operating cash flow can move differently from accounting earnings because of working-capital changes, including inventory and receivables. Capital expenditure also matters: a manufacturer expanding or maintaining plants may need substantial cash even when EBITDA is positive. Examine cash available after capital needs, debt repayments and interest, rather than treating EBITDA as spendable cash.

Review scheduled maturities as well: a company may have manageable total debt but face a concentrated refinancing requirement. Currency and rate exposure can also change the burden. Borrowings denominated in a different currency from the company’s revenue or cash flow may create exchange-rate risk, while variable-rate debt can make interest costs more sensitive to rate changes.
A practical workflow for building a comparison
A comparison is easiest to audit when each figure has a source, period, unit and definition. Keep those details with the metric in your spreadsheet or notes so they do not disappear when the numbers are copied into a chart.
- Define the question and peer group. Decide whether you are evaluating natural-rubber processing, gloves, tires or a mixed set. If the companies operate in different categories, mark the comparison as cross-business and explain the limitation.
- Set a common reporting window. Record fiscal year-end and the exact period covered. Note any different year-end, acquisition, divestiture or material footprint change that affects comparability.
- Capture the source and basis for each number. Record whether a figure comes from a consolidated statement, segment disclosure, factsheet or management discussion. Keep the stated currency, units and reported or adjusted label.
- Build the margin view. Record gross, operating and EBITDA margins separately. Verify definitions and excluded items before calculating ratios or comparing across companies.
- Build the operating view. Separate installed capacity, production, sales volume and utilization. Label future targets as targets and identify the product and time period covered.
- Build the debt and cash view. Collect gross debt, cash, net debt, interest expense, operating cash flow, capital expenditure and maturities for the same period. Calculate ratios only after checking that the components use compatible definitions.
- Explain the movement. Look for disclosed drivers such as input costs, selling prices, mix, currency, energy, utilization, hedging, restructuring, impairments, expansion and divestitures. Distinguish an issuer’s reported explanation from your own inference.
- Write the conclusion conditionally. State which company looks stronger on each chosen dimension and why. Name the limitations—business mix, accounting basis, scope changes or missing data—instead of collapsing them into an unsupported overall ranking.
A comparison table that preserves context
Use a table whose columns distinguish the business, period, measure and definition. For example, label a capacity-related column “reported operating measure” and specify whether the cell contains installed capacity, sales volume or utilization. Do not put a future target next to actual sales volume without making that distinction explicit. Where a comparable item has not been established in the filings you are using, write “not stated” and identify the source or period you checked; do not fill the gap with a guess.
Keep the table focused on comparable values. The company’s explanation for a change, one-off items, and material business-scope shifts can sit in a nearby notes column or in concise commentary below the table. This makes the numbers scannable without stripping away the qualifications needed to interpret them.

Common comparison mistakes and how to avoid them
Ranking different businesses by one margin
A processor, glove producer and tire maker do not have the same product mix or cost structure. Treating the highest disclosed gross margin as the best business can confuse business-model differences with operating strength. Compare companies within relevant peer groups, then explain what a cross-sector comparison can and cannot establish.

Mixing adjusted and reported results
An adjusted margin is not automatically more comparable or more accurate. Read the issuer’s definition and exclusions, and either compare reported measures with reported measures or show adjusted measures separately with each adjustment disclosed. If the adjustments differ materially, avoid a single combined ranking.
Treating capacity as output
Installed capacity indicates potential, while production and sales describe activity over a period. Utilization relates output to a defined capacity base. Confirm the specific measure and whether an announced expansion is completed; otherwise a target can be mistaken for a current operating asset.
Using EBITDA as cash available for debt service
EBITDA excludes interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization; it also does not deduct capital expenditure, working-capital needs or scheduled debt repayment. Pair it with cash flow, capital needs, interest expense and maturities before assessing debt risk.
Ignoring one-offs or a changing portfolio
Flooding-related expenses, impairments, restructuring and divestitures can affect reported results or comparability. Identify the item and period, and do not silently remove it from one company’s results while leaving similar items in another’s. For Goodyear’s FY2025 trend, account for the portfolio and footprint actions described in its Form 10-K rather than assuming unchanged business scope.
Turning a forecast into an actual result
Analyst estimates and company targets are not realized results. A May 2024 Beyond Securities report on NER discusses margin hedging and historical utilization, but its forward figures were estimates at publication. Attribute forecasts to their publisher and date if you use them, and keep them distinct from later reported outcomes. For a current ranking, refresh financial balances and operating measures from the latest audited statements and current company disclosures.
What a sound conclusion should say
A useful comparison does not need to declare one manufacturer universally superior. It can say which company reported stronger margins on a like-for-like basis, which has higher or lower utilization under its disclosed definition, and which appears to have more or less debt-service capacity after considering cash generation and capital needs. Each conclusion should name the period, metric definition and business scope that support it.
Where data are not comparable or not disclosed, say so plainly. A mixed group of processors, glove makers and tire manufacturers can still be compared meaningfully, but the result is a set of distinct operating and financial observations—not a clean ranking unless the differences have been addressed.
