The right choice depends on the jobs your account must do. For a UK consumer, compare Revolut with a specific current account—not with an undefined “traditional bank”—using seven checks: your legal account type and protection, monthly and usage fees, cash access, foreign-currency costs, overdraft terms, support and payment features, and the practicalities of switching.
Revolut’s UK migration is phased. Some customers still have an e-money account, while others have a personal current account with Revolut Bank UK Ltd. Check the account name and terms shown in your app before you compare protection or decide to move your salary and regular payments.
What you are actually comparing
This guide is for personal everyday banking in the United Kingdom. “Traditional bank” is not one product: a branch-based bank, a digital bank and a fee-free basic account can have very different fees, cash arrangements, overdraft rules and support. Select the exact current account you are considering and use its current fee and service documents alongside the Revolut plan you would use.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

There is no single feature that makes one option universally better. Revolut can be attractive when most spending is card-based and you value app controls or foreign-currency use. A named bank account may be more suitable if you deposit notes and coins, need an arranged overdraft, rely on branch service or want a particular set of payment facilities. Those are decision points to verify, not assumptions about either category.

Start with Revolut’s legal account status and protection
Do not begin with the word “bank.” Revolut says existing UK customers are moved in stages. On the day a customer’s account is moved, “it will automatically change from an e-money account to a personal current account.” Until that move occurs, the legal arrangement and protection are different.
Identify the account in your app
- Open the Revolut app and go to the account or profile area where your legal entity and terms are displayed.
- Look for wording that identifies a personal current account with Revolut Bank UK Ltd, or wording that identifies an e-money account.
- Open the latest terms and protection information for that account. Record the date and any product-specific exclusions.
- Check every balance separately. A current-account balance, an investment product and a crypto or commodities balance are not automatically covered by the same regime.
Understand the two protection arrangements
| What you hold | Protection described by Revolut | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Eligible deposits in a Revolut Bank UK Ltd personal current account | Revolut says eligible deposits are protected by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS) up to £120,000. | Confirm that your account has moved to the bank, that the money is an eligible deposit and that no exclusion applies. |
| Earlier Revolut e-money account | Funds are described as safeguarded. Safeguarding is a different arrangement from FSCS deposit protection. | Read the e-money terms and do not describe safeguarding as FSCS cover. |
| Crypto, commodities, stocks and other products supplied by other entities | Revolut says these do not receive Revolut Bank UK Ltd current-account FSCS protection. | Identify the legal provider and product-specific risk and protection information. |
The £120,000 figure is Revolut’s stated limit for eligible deposits in its UK bank account, not a promise that every Revolut balance qualifies. The account type, legal entity and product matter. A named bank account must be checked in the same way: read its protection information rather than inferring it from the provider’s brand.
Compare the exact fees, not a category average
Revolut’s price depends on plan and use. The figures below are the published Standard-plan terms shown on Revolut’s fee information, updated 11 December 2025. They are not a guarantee for another plan or a later date.

| Comparison point | Revolut Standard | Named UK bank current account |
|---|---|---|
| Subscription | Free, according to the Standard-plan page. | Check the account’s monthly fee, fee waiver conditions and any packaged benefits. |
| Cash withdrawals | Five withdrawals or £200 in a rolling month, whichever comes first, are free. Revolut lists a 2% fee after the allowance. | Check the provider’s free allowance, charges, network restrictions and whether an operator can add a separate fee. |
| Foreign-currency exchange | £1,000 per month on the Standard plan, with a 1% fair-usage fee above the limit, as stated on the fee page. | Check the account’s exchange-rate basis, markup, fixed fees, limits and overseas card charges. |
| Physical card | Delivery, replacement and optional-card charges are plan- and circumstance-specific; no single amount is established here. | Check first-card, replacement, expedited-delivery and additional-card charges. |
| Overdraft and failed payments | Use the account’s current terms; do not assume an overdraft or a particular charge structure. | Check arranged and unarranged overdraft interest, buffers, refused-payment charges and daily or monthly caps. |
| Cash deposits | Not available, according to Revolut’s cash-deposit help information. | Check whether deposits are accepted in branches, through a post-office arrangement or by another route, and check limits and fees. |
When you make the comparison, write the plan name, fee-page date, allowance and excess charge in the same row. This prevents a free allowance from being mistaken for unlimited use. Repeat the check if your spending pattern changes or the provider updates its terms.
Cash is a separate everyday-banking requirement
ATM withdrawals and cash deposits are different needs. Revolut says it does not accept cash deposits. It says you can still add money by bank transfer, debit card, Apple Pay or Google Pay. Those methods help if your income and existing money are already electronic; they do not solve the problem of receiving banknotes or coins.
If you regularly receive cash
- Ask the named bank exactly where cash can be deposited: a branch, a partner counter or another specified service.
- Confirm opening hours, deposit limits, identification requirements and any charge.
- Check how quickly deposited cash becomes available for card payments and transfers.
- Decide whether you need a second account solely for cash handling.
If you mainly withdraw cash
Measure your actual withdrawals over a rolling month. Under the Standard terms cited above, the first limit is whichever arrives sooner: five withdrawals or £200. A person who makes six small withdrawals can pay a fee even without reaching £200; someone who withdraws £200 in fewer transactions can also reach the limit. Compare that pattern with the named bank’s allowance and the availability of suitable ATMs.

Foreign currency: compare the whole transaction
Revolut describes its own exchange rate and a Standard-plan monthly exchange limit of £1,000, with a 1% fair-usage fee above that limit. The limit applies cumulatively to the exchange activity described on the fee page. Do not compare only a headline exchange rate: include the plan limit, any excess fee, the card charge for overseas spending and the rate used when the payment is processed.
- Estimate your normal monthly exchanges, including transfers and travel spending that the provider counts toward its limit.
- Check whether your selected Revolut plan is Standard or another plan; do not carry Standard figures into a different plan.
- Read the named bank’s foreign-currency and overseas-card schedule for the exact account.
- Compare a realistic month under your own usage, including one-off large purchases and cash withdrawals abroad.
Terms can change. Recheck the provider’s fee information and the in-app price shown immediately before a large exchange or trip.
Overdrafts, failed payments and basic accounts
An overdraft can matter more than a low monthly fee. Compare the actual interest rate, arranged-limit eligibility, fees for attempted payments, treatment of an unarranged overdraft and any grace period. Revolut’s published Standard figures above do not establish that every customer has an overdraft or what its cost would be, so obtain the terms for your account if borrowing is important.

The Financial Conduct Authority requires current-account providers to publish comparable information about their services and overdraft charges for each product. Use those provider pages to compare like with like, then read the account’s full terms before applying.
Basic bank accounts are another option for customers who do not need overdraft borrowing. HM Treasury’s collection, last updated 5 November 2025, identifies nine designated large personal-current-account providers: Barclays UK, Co-operative Bank, HSBC UK, Lloyds Banking Group, Nationwide Building Society, NatWest Group, Santander UK, TSB and Virgin Money. The collection describes fee-free standard operations for those designated basic accounts, but that does not establish the terms of every account from those providers or of any other bank. Check the specific account’s eligibility, cash facilities and payment limits.
Everyday access and support
List the functions you use in a normal month instead of rating “app” or “branch” in the abstract:
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- Receiving salary, benefits and bank transfers.
- Direct debits and standing orders.
- Debit-card payments, cash withdrawals and cash deposits.
- Apple Pay or Google Pay and other wallet support.
- International transfers and foreign-currency spending.
- Dispute, fraud and card-replacement support.
- Telephone, secure-message, in-app and in-person assistance.
For each function, verify the provider’s current help page or account terms. The available evidence does not establish a universal service-quality ranking, branch coverage or response time for either Revolut or traditional banks. Choose based on the support channel you will actually use and the consequences if it is unavailable at the wrong moment.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to make a defensible side-by-side comparison
- Name the two products. Write “Revolut Standard,” “Revolut personal current account” or the exact plan shown in your app. Name the specific bank account, not just the banking group.
- Capture the legal status. Record whether the Revolut account is e-money or with Revolut Bank UK Ltd, then record each product’s protection arrangement and exclusions.
- Build a 30-day usage profile. Count card purchases, ATM withdrawals, cash deposits, foreign exchanges, transfers, direct debits and occasions when you need support.
- Price that profile. Apply subscription fees, card charges, ATM allowances, exchange limits, excess fees and any overseas charges. Keep one-off and recurring costs separate.
- Stress-test difficult months. Include a holiday, a large exchange, several cash withdrawals, a replacement card and an unexpected shortfall. Check which fee or limitation appears first.
- Check payment resilience. Confirm salary and benefit receipt, direct-debit handling, standing orders, failed-payment rules and access while a card is frozen or replaced.
- Document the source date. Save the fee and protection pages or note their update dates. Revolut’s Standard figures cited here were updated 11 December 2025; your terms may differ later.
- Choose one account or a deliberate combination. A second account can be rational when one provider handles cash and another handles app-based or foreign-currency spending, but include the effort of monitoring both.
Switching to Revolut—or keeping both accounts
Revolut describes a Switch Service that uses the UK Current Account Switching Service (CASS). Eligibility and the practical process depend on your circumstances and the account involved, so verify them with Revolut before starting. Do not assume that every e-money customer, joint account or unusual payment arrangement can be switched in the same way.
Pre-switch checklist
- Confirm that the destination Revolut account is the legal account type you intend to use.
- List your salary, benefits, direct debits, standing orders and recurring card subscriptions.
- Ask how each regular payment will be treated and what you must update yourself.
- Check whether you need cash deposits or an overdraft that Revolut does not provide on your chosen terms.
- Download statements and keep enough money available for payments due during the changeover.
- Decide whether closing the old account removes a useful cash or emergency route.
Keeping both accounts can be sensible when the comparison reveals complementary strengths. Treat it as an intentional arrangement: set alerts, know which account pays each direct debit and review both fee schedules. Switching is a tool, not proof that one provider is better for every task.

- Calling every Revolut customer a bank customer. The UK move is phased; check your own account status.
- Calling safeguarding FSCS protection. They are different arrangements with different implications.
- Assuming every Revolut product shares current-account protection. Crypto, commodities, stocks and products supplied by other entities may be outside it.
- Treating “free” as unlimited. Standard-plan ATM and exchange allowances have stated limits and excess fees.
- Confusing ATM access with cash deposits. Revolut’s stated inability to accept cash deposits remains a separate practical limitation.
- Comparing with an imaginary traditional bank. Use the fee and service documents for one named account.
- Relying on old screenshots or remembered prices. Recheck the current page and in-app terms before a decision.
- Assuming switching is automatic for every customer. Verify CASS eligibility, regular-payment treatment and any account-specific conditions.
Which option fits which everyday pattern?
| Your priority | What to investigate first | Likely decision direction |
|---|---|---|
| Frequent cash deposits | Where and how the named account accepts cash, including limits and availability. | Favor the account with a workable deposit route; Revolut alone may not meet the need because it says cash deposits are unavailable. |
| Mostly card spending and app management | Plan fee, card terms, payment functions and support channels. | Revolut may fit, provided the legal status and protection meet your requirements. |
| Regular foreign-currency use | Exchange limit, excess fee, rate basis, overseas card charges and ATM terms. | Choose the product whose complete cost matches your volume, not the one with the most attractive headline rate. |
| Need an overdraft | Arranged-limit eligibility, interest and failed-payment charges for the exact account. | Use the provider’s published overdraft information; do not infer availability from the Revolut Standard subscription. |
| Want a fee-free basic account | Eligibility, standard-operation fees, cash access and payment limits. | Compare a designated provider’s specific basic account with Revolut’s actual terms. |
| Want maximum clarity about deposit protection | Legal entity, account type, eligible balances and exclusions. | Choose only after confirming which protection applies to the money you will actually hold. |
Bottom line
Compare Revolut with a named UK current account using your real transactions and the account’s legal terms. Revolut’s phased move means the first question is whether you have an e-money account or a Revolut Bank UK Ltd personal current account. Then price the plan, test cash and foreign-currency needs, inspect overdraft and payment rules, and verify support. A traditional bank is not automatically safer or more useful, and Revolut is not automatically a complete replacement; the better everyday account is the one whose documented protections, functions and costs match how you bank.
