Before buying a sale item, check the policy for that exact product and seller—not just the store’s general returns page. Compare the deadline, whether you can get a refund or only store credit, return costs and fees, final-sale exclusions, and how to cancel before shipment. A markdown is only a good deal if you understand what happens when the item is wrong, late, or no longer wanted.
What to check in a sale-item policy
Retailers may set different rules for sale or clearance merchandise, so do not assume a markdown has the same return terms as a full-price item. The FTC advises shoppers to check sale-item policies, deadlines, shipping responsibility, and restocking fees. FTC guidance on online shopping

- Return deadline: Record how many days you have and when the clock starts, such as delivery or purchase.
- Sale-specific exclusions: Look for terms such as “final sale,” “clearance,” “outlet,” or “refurbished.” Check the exact listing as well as the general policy.
- Available remedy: Determine whether the seller offers a refund to your original payment method, an exchange, store credit, or no return. These options are not equivalent.
- Return costs: Check who pays postage or a return label, whether pickup costs extra, and whether a restocking fee applies.
- Condition and proof: Note requirements for tags, packaging, unused condition, receipts, or an order number, along with any product-specific exclusions.
- How to start: Find out whether you must use an online portal, contact the seller, or return the item in a store.
- Price adjustments: Check whether the seller will credit the difference if the price drops after you buy.
Calculate the possible return cost before checkout. A return label, restocking fee, or store-credit-only remedy can reduce the value of a discount, particularly if you are unsure about fit or compatibility.

Compare sellers on the same terms
When two listings offer similar products, compare their policies side by side. A lower price may still be worth choosing, but only if you know what flexibility or costs you are trading away.

For each seller, keep the policy and listing as shown at checkout. If an important term is unclear, ask the seller in writing before paying and save the response.
Check marketplace listings separately
A product shown on a marketplace may be sold and shipped under terms that differ from the platform’s own policy. Identify the seller on the listing, read that seller’s return terms, and check whether the marketplace offers protection for this particular item and seller. Confirm who handles a claim and note any platform deadline. FTC guidance on buying from an online marketplace

Cancellation before shipment is not the same as a return
Retailer order cancellation
A seller may let you cancel an order before it ships, but the process and cutoff depend on its terms. Find the cancellation instructions and act promptly. Once an item has shipped or arrived, you may need to use the return policy instead.
Delayed or unshipped orders
The FTC’s Mail, Internet, or Telephone Order Merchandise Rule addresses shipment promises—not ordinary buyer’s remorse after delivery. In general, when a seller gives no shipping time, the rule requires shipment within 30 days; delays trigger notice and cancellation or refund requirements in specified circumstances. The details depend on the rule and the order. FTC business guide to the shipment rule

Cooling-Off Rule
The FTC Cooling-Off Rule covers certain sales made at a home or other covered location. It generally gives a buyer until midnight of the third business day to cancel an eligible sale, subject to exceptions. It does not cover sales made entirely online, by mail, or by telephone, and it is not a general three-day return right. Check the rule’s exceptions and applicable state law before relying on it. FTC explanation of the Cooling-Off Rule
State and transaction-specific protections
Consumer protections vary by state and transaction. For example, California’s Attorney General describes a disclosure requirement for certain limited- or no-return policies, along with exceptions that include items marked final sale. That California example should not be treated as a rule for other states. California DOJ refund-policy guidance

- Open the policy from the exact product listing or seller page; do not rely only on a generic FAQ.
- Confirm whether the retailer or a marketplace seller is responsible for the sale.
- Search the terms for “sale,” “clearance,” “final sale,” “exchange,” “store credit,” “return shipping,” and “restocking.”
- Write down the return deadline, available remedy, and likely return costs. Check cancellation instructions separately.
- Save a copy or screenshot of the listing and policy, plus the order confirmation and receipt. Keep messages with the seller; for marketplace orders, note the platform’s claim process and deadlines too.
If a dispute arises, gather your purchase records and review the company’s policy before contacting it. Explain the problem and the remedy you are seeking, and keep copies of the correspondence. The FTC outlines this approach in its guidance on resolving problems with a business.
