Short answer: Compare restaurant stocks in three linked passes: first normalize each company’s same-store-sales definition and split the result into traffic and average check; next compare margins with the same accounting scope while showing franchise and company-operated mix; finally match valuation multiples by price date, earnings period, and GAAP or adjusted basis. A higher comp, margin, or lower P/E is not automatically better until those definitions and business-model differences line up.

What a sound restaurant-stock comparison measures

Restaurant companies report several numbers that look comparable but answer different questions. Same-store sales (also called comparable sales) describe performance at an established restaurant population. A restaurant-level margin describes the economics of stores, while a consolidated operating margin includes corporate costs and the way a company records franchise revenue. A valuation multiple relates the market price to an earnings, sales, or cash-flow measure at a particular date.

The practical sequence is:

  1. Normalize comparable sales. Record the eligibility period, included restaurants, geography, channels, currency treatment, and whether the figure is company-owned or systemwide. Then separate traffic or transactions from average check.
  2. Normalize profitability. Match the numerator and denominator of each margin, identify food, labor, occupancy, and other cost pressures, and show the share of franchised versus company-operated stores.
  3. Normalize valuation. Use the same share-price date, trailing or forward earnings period, and GAAP or adjusted earnings convention across companies. Interpret the multiple beside growth, margins, leverage, leases, and risk.

The examples below use fiscal-year 2025 results filed or released in 2026. They explain a method, not a live ranking or a buy-or-sell recommendation.

Start with the exact same-store-sales definition

Why the label is not standardized

“Same-store sales,” “comparable sales,” and “comparable restaurant sales” are issuer-defined measures rather than a single industry standard. Before comparing two percentages, read the footnote in each company’s annual report and write down:

  • The minimum time a restaurant must have been open.
  • Whether temporarily closed restaurants remain in the population.
  • Which countries, regions, brands, channels, and ownership types are included.
  • Whether the number is reported in local currency, constant currency, or after currency translation.
  • Whether sales are from company-operated restaurants only or from the entire system, including franchisees.
  • The comparison period and whether acquisitions, remodels, relocations, or permanent closures are treated specially.

A one-percentage-point difference can reflect different populations rather than different consumer demand. Quote each issuer’s definition instead of treating the percentages as perfectly interchangeable.

McDonald’s and Chipotle illustrate the difference

Company Reported definition in fiscal 2025 filings What to watch when comparing
McDonald’s Comparable sales compare with the same prior-year period and include restaurants operating for at least 13 months, including temporarily closed restaurants. The measure excludes currency translation and sales from hyperinflationary markets. Systemwide sales include franchised and company-operated restaurants. The population can include both ownership models, and the currency and hyperinflation exclusions affect international comparisons. See the McDonald’s 2025 Form 10-K.
Chipotle Comparable restaurant sales are the period-over-period change in total revenue for company-owned restaurants open for at least 13 full calendar months. The measure is based on company-owned restaurants and total revenue, so it is not the same population as a systemwide franchise-inclusive measure. See the Chipotle 2025 Form 10-K.

Both definitions use a roughly 13-month eligibility threshold, but the stated population and exclusions differ. A comparison should preserve those qualifications in the table or chart rather than presenting two bare percentages.

Break the comp into traffic and average check

A comparable-sales result combines customer counts (traffic or transactions) and the average amount spent per transaction. McDonald’s 2025 Form 10-K states: “Comparable sales are driven by changes in guest counts and average check, the latter of which is affected by changes in pricing and product mix.” The sentence is attributed to McDonald’s Corporation’s filing, not to a named individual.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That distinction changes the interpretation:

  • Traffic-led growth usually indicates more visits or transactions and can support stronger operating leverage if stores have spare capacity.
  • Check-led growth can come from menu-price increases, customers choosing higher-priced items, or product mix. It may coexist with fewer transactions.
  • Negative traffic with positive comps is not unqualified demand growth. Higher prices or mix can more than offset fewer visits, but value perception and future traffic still need monitoring.
  • Positive traffic with a falling check may reflect discounting, a shift toward lower-priced items, or a value strategy that trades near-term revenue per visit for frequency.

When a filing gives both components, show them beside the comp. If it does not, label the missing component as not disclosed rather than inferring it from the total.

A dated example: Chipotle’s 2025 result

Chipotle reported that comparable restaurant sales decreased 1.7% in 2025. Transactions decreased 2.9%, while average check increased 1.2%. Digital sales represented 36.7% of total food and beverage revenue. These are Chipotle-reported fiscal-2025 figures released in 2026, not an industry benchmark; the company’s results release is at Chipotle’s fourth-quarter and full-year 2025 results.

The example shows why the three figures belong together. The headline comp was negative, and the decline was driven primarily by fewer transactions; the higher check partly offset that decline. Digital mix adds channel context, but it does not by itself prove higher profitability because fulfillment, delivery, technology, and promotional costs can differ by channel.

Compare margins only when scope and business model match

Restaurant-level versus consolidated operating margin

A restaurant-level operating margin generally isolates store revenue and direct store expenses. A consolidated operating margin is operating income divided by total reported revenue and includes corporate overhead and other company-level effects. The labels can sound similar while measuring different economic layers.

McDonald’s describes company-operated restaurant margin as sales less food and paper, payroll and benefits, occupancy, and other restaurant operating expenses. Certain non-restaurant support costs included in selling, general and administrative expense are excluded from that restaurant-level measure. Its franchised restaurant margin is franchised-restaurant revenue less franchised occupancy costs. Review the definitions and reconciliations in the McDonald’s 2025 Annual Report.

Do not put a restaurant-level margin for one company beside a consolidated operating margin for another and call the larger percentage “more profitable.” First match:

  • Numerator: restaurant contribution, segment operating income, operating income, EBITDA, or an adjusted variant.
  • Denominator: restaurant sales, segment revenue, total revenue, or systemwide sales.
  • Included costs: food and packaging, labor, occupancy, delivery, advertising, technology, corporate support, depreciation, and restructuring or impairment charges.
  • Period: quarter, fiscal year, trailing twelve months, or a normalized period.

Franchise mix changes the economics

Franchised and company-operated restaurants produce different revenue and cost patterns. A company-operated store records the customer sale and most store-level costs. A franchisor typically records royalties, rent, and fees rather than the franchisee’s entire food and labor bill. That can produce a higher consolidated margin percentage while shifting capital spending, labor risk, and operating responsibility to franchisees.

McDonald’s reported that franchised restaurant margins represented approximately 90% of restaurant margin dollars in 2025. That figure makes its consolidated margin structure unusual compared with a predominantly company-operated chain. Compare franchise share, royalty and rent streams, lease obligations, maintenance capital, and corporate overhead before concluding that one margin percentage represents better unit economics.

Use consolidated margin as a separate layer

McDonald’s reported a consolidated operating margin of 46.1% in 2025, versus 45.2% in 2024. The filing defines operating margin as operating income as a percentage of total revenues. It is a consolidated measure and should not be compared directly with a competitor’s restaurant-level operating margin.

After matching restaurant-level measures, place consolidated operating margin in a second table. Investigate changes through the income statement and management’s explanation. Relevant drivers include:

  • Sales leverage when established restaurants generate more revenue over largely fixed occupancy and support costs.
  • Food and packaging inflation.
  • Wage and benefits inflation, including local minimum-wage changes.
  • Rent, lease, and occupancy costs.
  • Promotional discounts and loyalty rewards.
  • Delivery commissions and other channel costs.
  • Temporary closures, remodels, impairments, or restructuring charges.
  • Corporate technology, advertising, and general administrative spending.

Management’s explanation is evidence of what the company attributes to a change, not proof that the same cost or trend will persist. Test whether the driver appears in several periods and whether guidance, commodity data, wage schedules, or store-level disclosures support a recurring effect.

Build a valuation comparison on aligned inputs

P/E is a ratio, not a verdict

The price-to-earnings ratio is current share price divided by earnings per share. The SEC’s Investor.gov glossary explains that P/E can help gauge whether a price is high or low relative to the company’s past or to other companies; see Investor.gov’s P/E Ratio explanation.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

For every P/E in a comparison, state:

  • The exact share-price date and closing-price source.
  • Whether earnings are trailing twelve months, the latest fiscal year, or a forward estimate.
  • Whether EPS is GAAP or adjusted, and which unusual items were removed.
  • The diluted share count and treatment of options, buybacks, or convertibles.
  • The currency and whether a fiscal year has ended for every company.

A lower P/E alone does not establish that a stock is undervalued. Earnings may be temporarily depressed by a weak traffic year, or temporarily inflated by a tax benefit, refranchising gain, impairment reversal, or other unusual item. Growth, margin durability, leverage, lease commitments, and financial risk can justify different multiples.

Use additional multiples carefully

Enterprise value to EBITDA can help when debt and cash differ, but define enterprise value consistently and decide whether EBITDA is reported or adjusted. Price-to-sales can provide a revenue lens, yet franchise-heavy companies may record much less end-customer sales as revenue than company-operated chains. That makes revenue-based comparisons especially sensitive to business model.

Other useful cross-checks include free-cash-flow yield, enterprise value to operating income, or a unit-level valuation framework. These are analytical choices, not universal standards. Whatever multiple you select, keep the numerator, denominator, period, currency, and adjustment policy consistent.

Align the date and earnings period

Valuation moves daily while filings arrive quarterly or annually. A valid table might use each company’s closing share price on the same date and the latest reported fiscal-year EPS available on that date. A forward P/E table must use estimates from the same date and methodology. Do not combine a current price for one stock with an old price for another, or a trailing GAAP EPS for one company with a forward adjusted EPS for another.

A practical comparison worksheet

Comparison block Fields to record for every company Interpretation question
Comparable sales Reported percentage; eligibility threshold; company-owned or systemwide population; geography; currency and hyperinflation exclusions; treatment of temporary closures. Are the two percentages calculated from materially similar restaurants and periods?
Demand components Transactions or traffic; average check; pricing; product mix; digital or delivery share when disclosed. Did customers visit more often, spend more per visit, or merely pay higher prices?
Restaurant economics Restaurant revenue; food and packaging; labor; occupancy; other store costs; restaurant-level margin definition and trend. Are the numerator and denominator the same, and are cost pressures recurring?
Business model Franchise versus company-operated share; royalty and rent streams; lease obligations; maintenance and growth capital. Does reported margin reflect store operations or a franchisor’s fee economics?
Corporate profitability Consolidated revenue; operating income; operating margin; depreciation; corporate overhead; unusual or adjusted items. What remains after store-level economics and support costs?
Valuation Price date; trailing or forward period; GAAP or adjusted EPS; P/E; chosen secondary multiple; debt, cash, leases, and share count. Is the price being compared with the same kind of earnings and risk?

Step-by-step process for comparing two restaurant stocks

  1. Choose a common cutoff date. Write down the market-price date and the latest fiscal period available for every company. Do not mix fiscal years without labeling the mismatch.
  2. Download each annual report and results release. Start with the company’s filing, then use the earnings release for traffic, check, digital, or unit details. Public-company filings and financial statements are available through SEC resources described at Investor.gov’s Stocks FAQs.
  3. Copy the comparable-sales definition verbatim into notes. Record the store-age threshold, ownership population, geography, currency treatment, and closure policy before copying the percentage.
  4. Decompose the comp. Enter traffic or transactions and average check in separate columns. Mark a component “not stated” when the issuer does not disclose it; do not estimate it from the headline comp.
  5. Choose one margin scope first. Compare restaurant-level margins with restaurant-level margins where both companies disclose them. Put consolidated operating margin in a separate row and label every numerator and denominator.
  6. Map the business model. Record franchised and company-operated unit counts or percentages, royalty and rent exposure, lease liabilities, and capital spending. Explain how those items affect reported revenue and margin.
  7. Calculate valuation consistently. For P/E, divide the same-date share price by the same type of EPS for each company. Repeat with a clearly defined secondary multiple only if its numerator and denominator are available on a comparable basis.
  8. Stress-test the conclusion. Ask how the result changes if traffic is flat, prices normalize, wages rise, a temporary closure ends, or an adjusted item is restored to GAAP earnings. A conclusion that changes under a small assumption should be presented as sensitive, not certain.

How to interpret a completed comparison

When one company has the higher comp

Check whether the advantage comes from transactions or price and mix. A traffic-led result is generally a different signal from a check-led result. Then verify that the higher comp covers a similar store population and does not reflect a more favorable currency or closure convention.

When one company has the higher margin

Identify whether the figure is restaurant-level or consolidated and compare franchise mix. A franchisor may show a high consolidated margin because franchise revenue carries relatively low direct store costs. A company-operated chain may report lower consolidated margins while retaining more of the sales and cost base. Neither result alone settles which business has better returns on invested capital.

When one company has the lower P/E

Check earnings quality and risk before calling it inexpensive. Determine whether the denominator is depressed, whether estimates assume a rapid traffic recovery, and whether debt, leases, buybacks, or a more cyclical market explain the discount. A lower multiple can be rational when growth, margins, balance-sheet flexibility, or unit economics are weaker.

Common mistakes and how to fix them

Using the headline comp as a demand score

Mistake: Treating positive comparable sales as proof that more customers visited. Fix: Report transactions and average check beside the comp, and identify pricing or product-mix effects.

Mixing company-owned and systemwide sales

Mistake: Comparing a company-owned metric with a franchise-inclusive system metric. Fix: Label the population in the column heading and compare like with like, or explain why the difference prevents a direct comparison.

Putting unlike margins in one ranking

Mistake: Ranking a restaurant-level margin against a consolidated operating margin. Fix: Match scope, numerator, denominator, and included costs; show consolidated margin separately.

Ignoring franchise mix and leases

Mistake: Assuming the higher margin percentage means superior store economics. Fix: Show franchise share, royalty and rent streams, lease obligations, and capital intensity.

Mixing GAAP and adjusted EPS

Mistake: Calling a P/E comparison fair when one denominator excludes impairments or restructuring and the other does not. Fix: Use GAAP for both or provide a transparent, consistently defined adjusted series with a reconciliation.

Turning one year into a permanent trend

Mistake: Assuming a single year of inflation, wage pressure, or traffic decline will continue unchanged. Fix: Examine several periods, management’s explanations, unit openings and closures, and the sensitivity of margins to the stated driver.

How to keep the comparison current

Restaurant metrics change with menu pricing, promotions, commodity costs, wages, closures, franchise transfers, and acquisitions. Recheck each issuer’s latest filing for definition changes before updating a chart. Preserve the original definition beside the new number so a restatement or population change is not mistaken for operating improvement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a current valuation view, update the share-price date, diluted share count, debt and cash, lease information, and the earnings period for every company at the same time. If forward estimates are used, record the estimate date and whether the estimates are GAAP or adjusted. If a figure is unavailable or not comparable, say “not stated” and explain the limitation rather than filling the cell with an estimate.

The SEC’s Investor.gov materials describe company filings as a public source for financial statements, definitions, and management explanations. Use those primary documents to verify every percentage and multiple before relying on a comparison.

The decision framework

A disciplined comparison produces three separate judgments rather than one score:

  • Demand quality: Are established-store sales rising because of transactions, sustainable pricing, or a temporary mix effect?
  • Economic quality: After matching margin scope and business model, are store economics improving, and are food, labor, occupancy, and support costs under control?
  • Price paid: Given growth, margins, leverage, leases, and earnings quality, is the valuation multiple reasonable relative to genuinely comparable businesses?

Only after those judgments are explicit should an investor form a view. Same-store sales provide the starting signal, margins explain how sales convert into profit, and valuation tests how much of that operating performance is already reflected in the stock price.
